Abstract:We present a quantum theory of Casimir forces between perfect electrical conductors, based on quantum electrodynamics and quantum statistical physics. This theory utilizes Kapusta's finite-temperature quantum field theory, combined with the Faddeev-Popov ghost formalism. This approach allows us to calculate Casimir forces at finite temperatures, providing both previously known and new physical insights from a unified perspective. Furthermore, our method enables us to compute the stress tensor associated with Casimir forces, in accordance with the Helmholtz free energy of an equilibrium quantum electromagnetic field. Using this methodology, we calculate the excess surface tension on the walls of slit-like pores due to the Casimir effect.

The Casimir Forces in a Single Conducting Cylindrical Cavity

Abstract:We want to study the Casimir effect for a single conducting microscopic cylindrical cavity. The mathematical technique is based on the Green function of the geometry of the inside of the cavity, and the integral regularization is based on the plasma frequency cutoff for real conductors. Using the symmetric electromagnetic energy-momentum tensor, in terms of four potential, the total Casimir energy for the inside of the Cavity is calculated. Neglecting the contribution of the external (outside of the cavity) Casimir energy based on the reason recently presented in [1], the forces experienced by the lateral surface of the cavity and its circular bases are calculated. The resulting expressions show that these forces are repulsive. The numerical computation is done for the real problem of a cavity with a basis of a radius in the same order of its height at the scale of 100 nanometers made of the best conducting materials already known.

Multiple scattering methods in Casimir calculations

Abstract:Multiple scattering formulations have been employed for more than 30 years as a method of studying the quantum vacuum or Casimir interactions between distinct bodies. Here we review the method in the simple context of δ-function potentials, so-called semitransparent bodies. (In the limit of strong coupling, a semitransparent boundary becomes a Dirichlet one.) After applying the method to rederive the Casimir force between two semitransparent plates and the Casimir self-stress on a semitransparent sphere, we obtain expressions for the Casimir energies between disjoint parallel semitransparent cylinders and between disjoint semitransparent spheres. Simplifications occur for weak and strong coupling. In particular, after performing a power series expansion in the ratio of the radii of the objects to the separations between their centers, we are able to sum the weak-coupling expansions exactly to obtain explicit closed forms for the Casimir interaction energy. The same can be done for the interaction of a weak-coupling sphere or cylinder with a Dirichlet plane. We show that the proximity force approximation (PFA), which becomes the proximity force theorem when the objects are nearly touching each other, is very poor for finite separations.

Abstract:The canonical quantization of macroscopic electromagnetism was recently presented in New J. Phys. 12 (2010) 123008. This theory is here used to derive the Casimir effect, by considering the special case of thermal and zero-point fields. The stress-energy-momentum tensor of the canonical theory follows from Noether's theorem, and its electromagnetic part in thermal equilibrium gives the Casimir energy density and stress tensor. The results hold for arbitrary inhomogeneous magnetodielectrics and are obtained from a rigorous quantization of electromagnetism in dispersive, dissipative media. Continuing doubts about the status of the standard Lifshitz theory as a proper quantum treatment of Casimir forces do not apply to the derivation given here. Moreover, the correct expressions for the Casimir energy density and stress tensor inside media follow automatically from the simple restriction to thermal equilibrium, without the need for complicated thermodynamical or mechanical arguments.

Casimir force in discrete scalar fields I: 1D and 2D cases

Abstract:We calculate the Casimir force between parallel plates for a massless scalar field. When adding the energy of normal modes, we avoid infinities by using a discrete spacetime lattice; however, this approach proves ineffective as long as both space and time are kept discrete. Yet, when time is treated as continuous while the scalar field forms a spatial periodic lattice, our method succeeds, and we refer to this approach as Hamiltonian lattice theory. The dispersion relation for both square and triangular lattices accurately reproduces the subtle Casimir effect, providing evidence that the Casimir force is independent of the type of lattice used. At low frequencies, both lattices exhibit a high level of rotational symmetry. However, at high frequencies, they lose this symmetry, even though the propagation of high-frequency waves becomes limited as their group velocity approaches zero.

Abstract:Based on a perturbative approach, a series expansion in susceptibility function of the medium is obtained for the Casimir force between arbitrary shaped objects immersed in a scalar or vector fluctuating field in arbitrary dimensions. Finite-temperature corrections are derived and the results are compared in first order with weak coupling regime in scattering method. The generalization to a massive vector field is also investigated.

Abstract:In this work, we investigate the violation of Lorentz symmetry through the Casimir effect, one of the most intriguing phenomena in modern physics. The Casimir effect, which represents a macroscopic quantum force between two neutral conducting surfaces, is widely regarded as a triumph of Quantum Field Theory. In this study, we present new results for the Casimir effect, focusing on the contribution of mass associated with fermionic quantum fields confined between two large parallel plates, in the context of Lorentz symmetry violation within the Horava–Lifshitz formalism. To calculate the Casimir energy and pressure, we impose a MIT bag boundary condition on the two plates, compatible with the higher-order derivative term in the modified Dirac equation. Our results reveal a strong influence of Lorentz violation on the Casimir effect. We observe that the Casimir energy is significantly affected, both in intensity and sign, potentially resulting in a repulsive or attractive force between the plates, depending on the critical exponent associated with the Horava–Lifshitz formalism.

Abstract:We study Casimir effect in equilibrium and non-equilibrium photon gas in the frame of quantum kinetic theory for U(1) gauge field. We derive first the transport, constraint and gauge fixing equations for the photon number distribution from Maxwell's equations, and then calculate the energy variation and Casimir force for a finite system by considering boundary condition on the surface of the system. The Casimir force in vacuum is suppressed by the thermal motion of photons in equilibrium state, when considering two adiabatic plates. In non-equilibrium state, the photon induced Casimir force oscillates and decays with time and finally disappears.

Abstract:Casimir effects manifests that, the two closely paralleled plates, generally produce a macroscopic attractive force due to the quantum vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic fields. The derivation of the force requires an {\it artificial} regulator by removing the divergent summation. By including naturally a spectrum density factor, based on the observation that an incomplete eigenvectors of observable, such as the eigenstates for the photons in the free field, can form a complete set of eigenvectors by introducing a unique spectrum transformation, an alternative way is presented to rederive the force, without using a regulator. As a result, the Casimir forces are obtained with the first term $-\pi^2 \hbar c/(240 a^4)$ attractive, and the second one, $-\pi^4 \hbar c^3 \sigma^2/(1008 a^6)$, also attractive but smaller, with $a$ the plate separation, and $\sigma$ a to-be-determined small constant number in the spectrum density factor.

Abstract:The mapping between a classical length and inverse temperature as imaginary time provides a direct equivalence between the Casimir force of a classical system in $D$ dimensions and internal energy of a quantum system in $d$$=$$D$$-$$1$ dimensions. The scaling functions of the critical Casimir force of the classical system with periodic boundaries thus emerge from the analysis of the symmetry related quantum critical point. We show that both non-perturbative renormalization group and quantum Monte Carlo analysis of quantum critical points provide quantitative estimates for the critical Casimir force in the corresponding classical model, giving access to widely different aspect ratios for the geometry of confined systems. In the light of these results we propose protocols for the experimental realization of critical Casimir forces for periodic boundaries through state-of-the-art cold-atom and solid-state experiments.

Numerical aspects of Casimir energy computation in acoustic scattering

Abstract:Computing the Casimir force and energy between objects is a classical problem of quantum theory going back to the 1940s. Several different approaches have been developed in the literature often based on different physical principles. Most notably a representation of the Casimir energy in terms of determinants of boundary layer operators makes it accessible to a numerical approach. In this paper, we first give an overview of the various methods and discuss the connection to the Krein-spectral shift function and computational aspects. We propose variants of Krylov subspace methods for the computation of the Casimir energy for large-scale problems and demonstrate Casimir computations for several complex configurations. This allows for Casimir energy calculation for large-scale practical problems and significantly speeds up the computations in that case.

Abstract:We investigate the Casimir effect between two-dimensional electron systems driven to the quantum Hall regime by a strong perpendicular magnetic field. In the large separation (d) limit where retardation effects are essential we find i) that the Casimir force is quantized in units of 3\hbar c \alpha^2/(8\pi^2 d^4), and ii) that the force is repulsive for mirrors with same type of carrier, and attractive for mirrors with opposite types of carrier. The sign of the Casimir force is therefore electrically tunable in ambipolar materials like graphene. The Casimir force is suppressed when one mirror is a charge-neutral graphene system in a filling factor \nu=0 quantum Hall state.

Casimir Force Between Dielectric Media with Free Charges

Abstract:The statistical mechanical approach to Casimir problems for dielectrics separated by a vacuum gap turns out to be compact and effective. A central ingredient of this method is the effect of interacting fluctuating dipole moments of the polarizable particles. At arbitrary temperature the path integral formulation of quantized particles, developed by Høye-Stell and others, is needed. At high temperature - the limit considered in the present paper - the classical theory is however sufficient. Our present theory is related to an idea put forward earlier by Jancovici and {Š}amaj (2004), namely to evaluate the Casimir force between parallel plates invoking an electronic plasma model and the Debye-Hückel theory for electrolytes. Their result was recently recovered by Høye (2008), using a related statistical mechanical method. In the present paper we generalize this by including a constant permittivity in the description. The present paper generalizes our earlier theory for parallel plates (1998), as well as for spherical dielectrics (2001). We also consider the Casimir force between a polarizable particle and a conductor with a small density of charges, finding agreement with the result recently derived by Pitaevskii (2008).

Precision measurement of the Casimir-Lifshitz force in a fluid

Abstract:The Casimir force, which results from the confinement of the quantum mechanical zero-point fluctuations of the electromagnetic fields, has received significant attention in recent years for its effect on micro- and nano-scale mechanical systems. With few exceptions, experimental observations have been limited to conductive bodies interacting separated by vacuum or air. However, interesting phenomena including repulsive forces are expected to exist in certain circumstances between metals and dielectrics when the intervening medium is not vacuum. In order to better understand the effect of the Casimir force in such situations and to test the robustness of the generalized Casimir-Lifshitz theory, we have performed the first precision measurements of the Casimir force between two metals immersed in a fluid. For this situation, the measured force is attractive and is approximately 80% smaller than the force predicted by Casimir for ideal metals in vacuum. We present experimental results and find them to be consistent with Lifshitz's theory.

Casimir Physics beyond the Proximity Force Approximation: The Derivative Expansion

Abstract:We review the derivative expansion (DE) method in Casimir physics, an approach which extends the proximity force approximation (PFA). After introducing and motivating the DE in contexts other than the Casimir effect, we present different examples which correspond to that realm. We focus on different particular geometries, boundary conditions, types of fields, and quantum and thermal fluctuations. Besides providing various examples where the method can be applied, we discuss a concrete example for which the DE cannot be applied; namely, the case of perfect Neumann conditions in 2 + 1 dimensions. By the same example, we show how a more realistic type of boundary condition circumvents the problem. We also comment on the application of the DE to the Casimir-Polder interaction which provides a broader perspective on particle-surface interactions.

On the Direction of Casimir Forces

Abstract:The Casimir force due to a massless scalar field satisfying Dirichlet boundary conditions may attract or repel a piston in the neck of a flask-like container. Using the world-line formalism this behavior is related to the competing contribution to the interaction energy of two types of Brownian bridges. It qualitatively is also expected from attractive long-range two-body forces between constituents of the boundary. A geometric subtraction scheme is presented that avoids divergent contributions to the interaction energy and classifies the Brownian bridges that contribute to the force. These are all of finite length and the Casimir force can be analyzed and in principle accurately computed without resorting to regularization or analytic continuation. The world-line analysis is robust with respect to variations in the shape of the piston and the flask and the analogy with long-range forces suggests that neutral atoms and particles are also drawn into open-ended pipes (or nano-tubes) by Casimir forces of electromagnetic origin.
