Abstract:Freeway congestion in many cases may spill back for several kilometers, blocking a number of on/off-ramps upstream of the congestion origin. As a result, the total off-ramp flow may substantially reduce, and vehicles bound for the blocked off-ramps are trapped in the mainstream congestion, causing the continuing spillback of congestion that blocks more off-ramps at the further upstream with similar effects and so forth. The off-ramp blockage effect is readily understood and its impact is empirically recognized, but there is a lack of analytical results to provide more insights. In this paper some flow conditions on bottleneck activation are first established, and the mechanism of the off-ramp blockage is theoretically explored. Macroscopic and microscopic simulations are conducted to demonstrate the analytical results obtained. To demonstrate the off-ramp blockage effect in particular, general relations between the total demand, total inflow, total off-ramp outflow, and the number of vehicles within the considered freeway system is examined in simulation. This work can shed some light on a side of traffic network dynamics that was not given enough attention before.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a simple temporal-spatial queueing model to quantitatively address some typical congestion patterns that were observed around on/off-ramps. In particular, we examine three prime factors that play important roles in ramping traffic scenarios: the time tau(in) for a vehicle to join a jam queue, the time tau(out) for this vehicle to depart from this jam queue, and the time interval T for the ramping vehicle to merge into the mainline. Based on Newell's simplified car-following model, we show how tau(in) changes with the main road flow rate q(main). Meanwhile, T is the reciprocal of the ramping road flow rate q(ramp). Thus, we analytically derive the macroscopic phase diagram plotted on the q(main)-versus-q(ramp) plane and tau(in)-versus-T plane based on the proposed model. Further study shows that the new queueing model not only reserves the merits of Newell's model on the microscopic level but helps quantify the contributions of these parameters in characterizing macroscopic congestion patterns as well. Previous approaches distinguished phases merely through simulations, but our model could derive analytical boundaries for the phases. The phase transition conditions obtained by this model agree well with simulations and empirical observations. These findings help reveal the origins of some well-known phenomena during traffic congestion.
Integrated Control of Internal Boundary and Ramp Inflows for Lane-free Traffic of Automated Vehicles on Freeways.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with a novel traffic control concept of internal boundary control for bi-directional lane-free traffic of automated vehicles on freeways. The internal boundary control can help exploit the capacity resources of road infrastructure and eliminate traffic jams by sharing the total bidirectional capacity for traffic on freeways when the total demand of the bi-directional traffic (also in consideration of on/off-ramp flows in both directions) does not exceed the total capacity. When this condition is not met, however, applying the internal boundary control alone cannot reach the pursued goal. Thus, one other traffic control measure ramp metering is introduced as well. This paper studies how to prevent freeway congestion using both control measures. A cell transmission model (CTM) based non-holding-back quadratic programming optimal control model is formulated. The investigation results show that the proposed integrated control scheme can maximize the utilization of road infrastructure and remove congestion at overloaded ramp-merging areas. It is the first time to study the combination of the two control measures and its potential.

Abstract:Coordinated ramp metering (CRM) is an efficient measure to mitigate traffic congestion on freeway corridors. One of the key issues of implementing CRM is to decide when to start the control on the ramps. Generally, the control timing for CRM is determined on the basis of the traffic state on a freeway corridor to prevent traffic jams on corridors. In principle, high throughputs and less congestions on corridors are aimed when determining the control timing of CRM. However, it is found that the traffic state at high densities is fairly unstable with high probabilities of traffic breakdown. This paper proposes to determine the control timing, by considering not only high throughputs but also stable flows on freeway corridors. A novel approach is developed by introducing an indicator of production stability (PS) to determine when to start the control of CRM. The indicator is established on the basis of a macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) and the instability of traffic flows. Empirical traffic data from urban freeway networks in the city of Shanghai, China, are utilized to verify the feasibility of using the PS indicator. It is found that the flows at high accumulations are very unstable with high probabilities to breakdown. The developed indicator PS has a clear peak, from which a critical accumulation level could be identified. The critical accumulation level derived according to PS is lower than that simply determined from the MFD, which implies that the control should start earlier to guarantee stable flows.

Abstract:Capacity drop at congested freeway bottlenecks is well known with a lot of field observations. This paper studies coordinated ramp metering (RM) and mainstream traffic flow control (MTFC) as well as their integration (RM+MTFC) for freeway traffic, with particular attention to effects of capacity drop on the performance of traffic control measures. Via mathematical analysis and comprehensive simulation studies under an optimal control framework, the work has revealed a capacity-drop-related mechanism that MTFC and ramp metering are based on to take effects, and obtained a number of important conclusions: (1) applications of any control measure (RM, MTFC, or RM+MTFC) in freeways are justified by the existence of capacity drop in field; (2) an appropriate usage of the control measures can effectively prevent the activation of potential bottlenecks on freeways and hence avoid capacity drop; (3) any control measure is beneficial for a large majority of the driver population in a freeway network if it can manage to increase the accumulated total network exit flow; (4) it is a common misconception that ramp metering would simply transfer traffic loads from the freeway mainstream to on-ramps. The work has also highlighted the strengths, weaknesses, and applicability of ramp metering and MTFC.

Abstract:Understanding the mechanisms of injury might prove useful in assisting the development of methods for the management and mitigation of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Computational head models can provide valuable insight into the multi-length-scale complexity associated with the primary nature of diffuse axonal injury. It involves understanding how the trauma to the head (at the centimeter length scale) translates to the white-matter tissue (at the millimeter length scale), and even further down to the axonal-length scale, where physical injury to axons (e.g., axon separation) may occur. However, to accurately represent the development of TBI, the biofidelity of these computational models is of utmost importance. There has been a focused effort to improve the biofidelity of computational models by including more sophisticated material definitions and implementing physiologically relevant measures of injury. This paper summarizes recent computational studies that have incorporated structural anisotropy in both the material definition of the white matter and the injury criterion as a means to improve the predictive capabilities of computational models for TBI. We discuss the role of structural anisotropy on both the mechanical response of the brain tissue and on the development of injury. We also outline future directions in the computational modeling of TBI.
An Adaptive Control Scheme for Local and Coordinated Ramp Metering

Abstract:This study aims to provide insights and demonstrate the properties and the performance of a nonlinear adaptive control scheme which has been recently developed to address the ramp metering problem arising in freeways. The proposed scheme consists of a nominal feedback law in conjunction with a nonlinear observer which aims to estimate some unknown system variables. A distinguishing novelty of the proposed approach is that it can inherently be applied both at local and coordinated levels. The control scheme is tested for realistic traffic scenarios using a macroscopic traffic flow simulator as a surrogate for potential field application. Comparison tests have been performed with other control strategies proposed in the literature and employed already in the field.

Abstract:This paper studies a control strategy applicable to local ramp metering in the presence of random-location bottlenecks (RLBs) downstream of a metered on-ramp. With the support of the Highway Department of Victoria State, Australia, local ramp metering in the RLB case has recently been investigated, with the aim of designing appropriate and practicable control approaches. A related control strategy has been developed and tested in macroscopic simulation. This paper presents some representative testing results. This strategy has been incorporated into the HERO (heuristic ramp-metering coordination) freeway ramp signal control system and will be applied in Melbourne in the frame of a large-scale freeway upgrade project.

Abstract:Capacity drop at congested freeway bottlenecks is well known with a lot of field observations and accounts for severe performance degradation of road infrastructure. This paper addresses freeway ramp metering and mainstream traffic flow control (MTFC) at active bottlenecks, with an aim of avoiding capacity drop. A special attention was paid to the effects of capacity drop on the performance of control measures. Via mathematical analyses, it was first shown that the significance and usefulness of the control measures are justified by the presence of capacity drop in field. This was then verified via macroscopic simulation studies, with ramp metering, MTFC, and their integration formulated in a framework of coordinated and integrated optimal control. Abstract:We present the analytical results in a simple traffic model describing a single-lane highway with ramps. Both on-ramps and off-ramps are considered. Complete classification of distinct phases is achieved. Exact phase diagrams are derived. In the case of a single ramp (either on-ramp or off-ramp), the bottleneck effect is absent. The traffic conditions of congestion before the ramp and free-flowing after the ramp cannot be realized. In the case of two consecutive ramps, the bottleneck emerges when the on-ramp is placed before the off-ramp and the flow in between the ramps saturates.

Abstract:Highway capacity is often subject to stochastic perturbations due to the combined effects of weather, traffic mixture, driver behavior, etc. This paper is motivated by the need of a systematic approach to traffic control with performance guarantees in the face of such perturbations. We develop a novel control-theoretic method for designing perturbation-resilient ramp metering. We consider a cell-transmission model with 1) Markovian cell capacities and 2) buffers representing on-ramps and upstream mainline. Using this model, we analyze the stability of on-ramp queues by constructing piecewise Lyapunov functions that consider the nature of nonlinear traffic dynamics. Then, we design ramp controllers that guarantee bounds for throughput and queue sizes. We also formulate the problem of coordinated ramp metering as a bi-level optimization with non-convex inner sub-problems. To address the computational issue in solving this problem, we also consider localized and partially coordinated reformulations. A case study of a 18.1-km highway in Los Angeles, USA indicates a 8.3\% (resp. 9.9\%) reduction of vehicle-hours-traveled obtained by the localized (resp. partially coordinated) control, both outperforming the classical ALINEA and METALINE controllers.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the capacity of a highway with two on-ramps by using a cellular automata traffic flow model. We investigate how to improve the system capacity by assigning traffic flow to the two ramps. The system phase diagram is presented and different regions are classified. It is shown that in region I, in which both ramps are in free flow and the main road upstream of the ramps is in congestion, assigning a higher proportion of the demand to the upstream on-ramp could improve the overall flow, which is consistent with previous studies. This is explained through studying the spatiotemporal patterns and analytical investigations. In contrast, optimal assignment has not been observed in other regions. We point out that our result is robust and model independent under certain conditions.

Abstract:Based on the uncertainty characteristic of freeway chaos system,the synthetic method was proposed to control the chaos system of freeway by using delay feedback control method and integrator control.The principle is briefly introduced about the system of on-ramp chaos control in freeway with the open-close function.The feedback ramp controller was designed.The goal of chaos control is to realize periodic orbits from unstable periodic movement and the ramp metering is the control variable.The difference effects were discussed in the stimulation experiment among delayed feedback control and ALINEA.The simulation result shows that the principle and the method are correct and feasible.

Abstract:Chaos control in freeway system is studied by using a fuzzy delayed feedback control method. Based on the nonlinear and uncertain characteristics of freeway chaos system, a synthetic method is proposed to control the freeway chaos by using the theory of delay feedback control and the Takagi-Sugeno(TS) fuzzy control method. The principle on the switching system of on-ramp chaos control in freeway is briefly introduced. The chaos control signal will be used as the input, if the maximal Lyapunov exponent is positive, by using the intelligent real-time recognition method for chaos in traffic flow. The feedback ramp controller is designed. The goal of chaos control is to realize periodic orbits from unstable periodic movements. The error and its variation between the signal of the system state variables and its delayed signals are the input variables for the chaos controller. The ramp metering rate is the output variable. Based on the experiences of the experts, the parameters of the TS fuzzy controller are optimized by using genetic algorithm. The effects are discussed in the stimulation experiment. The results indicate that both the principle and the method are correct and feasible.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the on-ramp system using the cellular automata traffic flow model. Different from previous works, we consider not only the influence of the on-ramp flow on the main road but also the opposite influence. The update rules are given in detail and the concept of priority is introduced. The numerical simulations are carried out and the phase diagram is presented. Two different types of phase diagram are distinguished and the currents of the on-ramp system are discussed.

Abstract:We analyze traffic data from a highway section containing one effective on-ramp. Based on two criteria, local velocity variation patterns and expansion (or nonexpansion) of congested regions, three distinct congested traffic states are identified. These states appear at different levels of the upstream flux and the on-ramp flux, thereby generating a phase digram of the congested traffic flow. Observed traffic states are compared with recent theoretical analyses and both agreeing and disagreeing features are found.

Abstract:We present an empirical phase diagram of the congested traffic flow measured on a highway section with one effective on-ramp. Through the analysis of local density-flow relations and global spatial structure of the congested region, four distinct congested traffic states are identified. These states appear at different levels of the upstream flux and the on-ramp flux, thereby generating a phase digram of the congested traffic flow. Observed traffic states are discussed in connection with recent theoretical analyses.

Abstract:By actively controlling the rotation of its pendulum, a vertical axis pendulum wave energy converter can generate significantly more net electricity from ocean waves than what would otherwise be possible through a passively swinging pendulum. This suggests that such converters can optimize their performance by incorporating active control schemes within their ever‐ changing ocean wave environment. The challenge of implementing such control, however, necessitates that an active controller be developed. Here, we address such challenges by: (i) deriving the equations of motion for a constrained generic vertical axis pendulum wave energy converter; (ii) modeling an irregular ocean wave environment; (iii) developing a model predictive and integral error tracking controller to enforce a desired control strategy; and (iv) simulating the converter within the modeled wave environment both with and without active control for the purpose of comparing their respective net power generation results. Here, we find that by actively controlling the rotation of the converter’s pendulum, both continuous‐mean and peak power generation are increased significantly. Simulation results show that active control is capable of increasing continuous‐mean net power generation by over 200 percent. These results give strong evidence and support for further vertical axis pendulum wave energy converter development and also for the continued investigation of applying such active controllers to real world scenarios and prototypes.
