School Psychology Review
Abstract:In recent years, school psychology has increasingly recognized the importance of social-emotional health in achieving youth positive outcomes. Social-emotional skills, such as empathy, self-awareness, and responsible decision-making, are crucial for long-term academic and personal success. To help educators and school psychologists assess and promote students' social-emotional health, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of this topic. This special section focuses on the significance of social-emotional skills and previous research on social-emotional learning (SEL) and their contributions and remaining questions. It includes seven contemporary articles on SEL-related school practices to enhance our understanding and suggest future directions for research and practice. Impact Statement This paper discusses the theoretical and empirical foundations for social-emotional learning (SEL) and its significance on youth positive development. It also summarizes the scholarship included in this special topic section highlighting areas of opportunity to improve SEL research and practice for school-aged children and adolescents.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The paper attempts to address the issue of students' social-emotional learning (SEL) and the necessity and importance of supporting its development. Specifically, the article emphasizes that social-emotional skills, such as empathy, self-awareness, and responsible decision-making, are crucial for students' long-term academic and personal success. To help educators and school psychologists assess and promote students' social-emotional well-being, the article explores the following points: 1. **Importance of SEL**: The article reviews the importance and theoretical foundation of SEL for positive adolescent development, as well as the role of SEL in promoting academic achievement and reducing behavioral problems. 2. **Contributions and shortcomings of existing research**: The article summarizes the contributions of current SEL research while also pointing out existing issues, such as the developmental milestones of SEL skills, the state of SEL assessment and implementation practices under regular school conditions, and factors influencing the success of various SEL interventions. 3. **Directions for future research and practice**: By analyzing seven contemporary articles on SEL-related school practices, the article proposes directions for future SEL research and practice, including how to improve the effectiveness of SEL assessment and intervention through individuals (such as peers or teachers) or tools, which groups can benefit from interventions, the effectiveness of existing SEL interventions on different positive student outcomes, and how SEL frameworks can be translated into state-level practices. In summary, the paper aims to provide guidance and recommendations for further research and practice in SEL through a comprehensive analysis of existing studies, in order to better support students' social-emotional learning and development.
