Abstract:We examine prevailing philosophical and historical views about the origin of infinitesimal mathematics in light of modern infinitesimal theories, and show the works of Fermat, Leibniz, Euler, Cauchy and other giants of infinitesimal mathematics in a new light. We also detail several procedures of the historical infinitesimal calculus that were only clarified and formalized with the advent of modern infinitesimals. These procedures include Fermat's adequality; Leibniz's law of continuity and the transcendental law of homogeneity; Euler's principle of cancellation and infinite integers with the associated infinite products; Cauchy's infinitesimal-based definition of continuity and "Dirac" delta function. Such procedures were interpreted and formalized in Robinson's framework in terms of concepts like microcontinuity (S-continuity), the standard part principle, the transfer principle, and hyperfinite products. We evaluate the critiques of historical and modern infinitesimals by their foes from Berkeley and Cantor to Bishop and Connes. We analyze the issue of the consistency, as distinct from the issue of the rigor, of historical infinitesimals, and contrast the methodologies of Leibniz and Nieuwentijt in this connection.

Abstract:Like his colleagues de Prony, Petit, and Poisson at the Ecole Polytechnique, Cauchy used infinitesimals in the Leibniz-Euler tradition both in his research and teaching. Cauchy applied infinitesimals in an 1826 work in differential geometry where infinitesimals are used neither as variable quantities nor as sequences but rather as numbers. He also applied infinitesimals in an 1832 article on integral geometry, similarly as numbers. We explore these and other applications of Cauchy's infinitesimals as used in his textbooks and research articles. An attentive reading of Cauchy's work challenges received views on Cauchy's role in the history of analysis and geometry. We demonstrate the viability of Cauchy's infinitesimal techniques in fields as diverse as geometric probability, differential geometry, elasticity, Dirac delta functions, continuity and convergence. Abstract:In teaching infinitesimal calculus we sought to present basic concepts like continuity and convergence by comparing and contrasting various definitions, rather than presenting "the definition" to the students as a monolithic absolute. We hope that this could be useful to other instructors wishing to follow this method of instruction. A poll run at the conclusion of the course indicates that students tend to favor infinitesimal definitions over epsilon, delta ones.

Abstract:We re-evaluate the great Leibniz-Newton calculus debate, exactly three hundred years after it culminated, in 1712. We reflect upon the concept of invention, and to what extent there were indeed two independent inventors of this new mathematical method. We are to a considerable extent agreeing with the mathematics historians Tom Whiteside in the 20th century and Augustus de Morgan in the 19th. By way of introduction we recall two apposite quotations: "After two and a half centuries the Newton-Leibniz disputes continue to inflame the passions. Only the very learned (or the very foolish) dare to enter this great killing ground of the history of ideas" from Stephen Shapin and "When de l'Hopital, in 1696, published at Paris a treatise so systematic, and so much resembling one of modern times, that it might be used even now, he could find nothing English to quote, except a slight treatise of Craig on quadratures, published in 1693" from Augustus de Morgan.

Abstract:The goal of this paper consists of developing a new (more physical and numerical in comparison with standard and non-standard analysis approaches) point of view on Calculus with functions assuming infinite and infinitesimal values. It uses recently introduced infinite and infinitesimal numbers being in accordance with the principle 'The part is less than the whole' observed in the physical world around us. These numbers have a strong practical advantage with respect to traditional approaches: they are representable at a new kind of a computer - the Infinity Computer - able to work numerically with all of them. An introduction to the theory of physical and mathematical continuity and differentiation (including subdifferentials) for functions assuming finite, infinite, and infinitesimal values over finite, infinite, and infinitesimal domains is developed in the paper. This theory allows one to work with derivatives that can assume not only finite but infinite and infinitesimal values, as well. It is emphasized that the newly introduced notion of the physical continuity allows one to see the same mathematical object as a continuous or a discrete one, in dependence on the wish of the researcher, i.e., as it happens in the physical world where the same object can be viewed as a continuous or a discrete in dependence on the instrument of the observation used by the researcher. Connections between pure mathematical concepts and their computational realizations are continuously emphasized through the text. Numerous examples are given.

Abstract:Infinitesimals are natural products of the human imagination. Their history goes back to the Greek antiquity. Their role in the calculus and analysis has seen dramatic ups and downs. They have stimulated strong opinions and even vitriol. Edwin Hewitt developed hyperreal fields in the 1940s. Abraham Robinson's infinitesimals date from the 1960s. A noncommutative version of infinitesimals, due to Alain Connes, has been in use since the 1990s. We review some of the hyperreal concepts, and compare them with some of the concepts underlying noncommutative geometry.

A historical analysis of the independent development of calculus by Newton and Leibniz

Abstract:This paper undertakes a historical investigation of the separate and independent development of calculus by Isaac Newton and Gottfried Leibniz in the late 17th century. Through analysis of primary sources and historiographical perspectives, it explores the differences in notation, methods, and applications used by each mathematician to formulate foundational concepts of calculus. The research demonstrates that Newton relied more on geometric intuition, developing calculus concepts like fluxions and fluents rooted in kinematic problems. His 1687 Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica synthesized many calculus innovations. Meanwhile, Leibniz approached calculus from an algebraic mindset, utilizing infinitesimal differentials and comprehensively explaining integral and differential calculus in publications like Nova Methodus pro Maximis et Minimis. Evaluation of letters and documents from the 1670s and 1680s shows no direct collaboration or communication about calculus between Newton and Leibniz. This lack of transmission, coupled with the disparities in their notation and calculus techniques, provides evidence for independent creation. However, Newton and Leibniz shared key insights regarding rates of change, derivatives and integrals, hinting at a broader zeitgeist in early modern mathematics and science. Thus, this dual achievement illustrates how the Scientific Revolution facilitated conceptual convergence despite geographic separation between great thinkers. Investigating this case study offers perspective on the interplay between individual genius and wider social contexts in driving scientific progress. This paper concludes by assessing the legacy of the Newton-Leibniz debate over priority and analyzing work that paved the way for modern unified calculus notation and applications.

Abstract:In this paper we use theoretical frameworks from mathematics education and cognitive psychology to analyse Cauchy's ideas of function, continuity, limit and infinitesimal expressed in his Cours D'Analyse. Our analysis focuses on the development of mathematical thinking from human perception and action into more sophisticated forms of reasoning and proof, offering different insights from those afforded by historical or mathematical analyses. It highlights the conceptual power of Cauchy's vision and the fundamental change involved in passing from the dynamic variability of the calculus to the modern set-theoretic formulation of mathematical analysis. This offers a re-evaluation of the relationship between the natural geometry and algebra of elementary calculus that continues to be used in applied mathematics, and the formal set theory of mathematical analysis that develops in pure mathematics and evolves into the logical development of non-standard analysis using infinitesimal concepts. It suggests that educational theories developed to evaluate student learning are themselves based on the conceptions of the experts who formulate them. It encourages us to reflect on the principles that we use to analyse the developing mathematical thinking of students, and to make an effort to understand the rationale of differing theoretical viewpoints.

The significance and outstanding methods in constructing the independent Kipriyanov fractional calculus theory are convexly stressed, also we represent modern results involving the Kipriyanov operator and corresponding generalization under the semigroup theory point of view.

Riemannian Geometry to Higher Order in the Infinitesimals

Abstract:Differential geometry may be generalized to allow infinitesimals to any order. The purpose of the present contribution is to show that the theory so developed expands received geometrical ideas in an interesting way, rich in potential for future exploration. The first order of business is to furnish the notion of a higher tangent vector, as defined abstractly by means of commutative algebra, with a workable interpretation in terms of spatial intuition. Then we introduce the differential calculus of the so-called jet connection, viz., an extension of the usual affine connection that takes higher tangent vectors as its arguments -- thereby enabling us to give a sense to parallel transport in the direction of a higher tangent, what has (to our knowledge) never been entertained before. After generalizing the Riemannian metric tensor to include a dependence up to any order in the infinitesimals, we arrive at natural analogues of the Levi-Civita connection and the Riemannian curvature tensor which display novel phenomena rooted in interactions among infinitesimals differing in order. Finally on the integral side, an intrinsic theory of integration adapted to integrands possibly of higher than first order in the differentials is developed, with a view towards eventually defining an action functional that will be applicable in the general theory of relativity.

Abstract:Procedures relying on infinitesimals in Leibniz, Euler and Cauchy have been interpreted in both a Weierstrassian and Robinson's frameworks. The latter provides closer proxies for the procedures of the classical masters. Thus, Leibniz's distinction between assignable and inassignable numbers finds a proxy in the distinction between standard and nonstandard numbers in Robinson's framework, while Leibniz's law of homogeneity with the implied notion of equality up to negligible terms finds a mathematical formalisation in terms of standard part. It is hard to provide parallel formalisations in a Weierstrassian framework but scholars since Ishiguro have engaged in a quest for ghosts of departed quantifiers to provide a Weierstrassian account for Leibniz's infinitesimals. Euler similarly had notions of equality up to negligible terms, of which he distinguished two types: geometric and arithmetic. Euler routinely used product decompositions into a specific infinite number of factors, and used the binomial formula with an infinite exponent. Such procedures have immediate hyperfinite analogues in Robinson's framework, while in a Weierstrassian framework they can only be reinterpreted by means of paraphrases departing significantly from Euler's own presentation. Cauchy gives lucid definitions of continuity in terms of infinitesimals that find ready formalisations in Robinson's framework but scholars working in a Weierstrassian framework bend over backwards either to claim that Cauchy was vague or to engage in a quest for ghosts of departed quantifiers in his work. Cauchy's procedures in the context of his 1853 sum theorem (for series of continuous functions) are more readily understood from the viewpoint of Robinson's framework, where one can exploit tools such as the pointwise definition of the concept of uniform convergence. Abstract:We apply Benacerraf's distinction between mathematical ontology and mathematical practice (or the structures mathematicians use in practice) to examine contrasting interpretations of infinitesimal mathematics of the 17th and 18th century, in the work of Bos, Ferraro, Laugwitz, and others. We detect Weierstrass's ghost behind some of the received historiography on Euler's infinitesimal mathematics, as when Ferraro proposes to understand Euler in terms of a Weierstrassian notion of limit and Fraser declares classical analysis to be a "primary point of reference for understanding the eighteenth-century theories." Meanwhile, scholars like Bos and Laugwitz seek to explore Eulerian methodology, practice, and procedures in a way more faithful to Euler's own. Euler's use of infinite integers and the associated infinite products is analyzed in the context of his infinite product decomposition for the sine function. Euler's principle of cancellation is compared to the Leibnizian transcendental law of homogeneity. The Leibnizian law of continuity similarly finds echoes in Euler. We argue that Ferraro's assumption that Euler worked with a classical notion of quantity is symptomatic of a post-Weierstrassian placement of Euler in the Archimedean track for the development of analysis, as well as a blurring of the distinction between the dual tracks noted by Bos. Interpreting Euler in an Archimedean conceptual framework obscures important aspects of Euler's work. Such a framework is profitably replaced by a syntactically more versatile modern infinitesimal framework that provides better proxies for his inferential moves. Abstract:In this article, we explore the notion of infinity by studying Cantor's contribution to this field. A brief history of set theory is given. As an example of infinity, we consider Hilbert's famous hotel. A graphical construction is used to demonstrate the countability of rationals. Cantor's diagonal procedure is explored, demonstrating that the infinity of real numbers is greater than that of integers. There is therefore a hierarchy of infinities, enabling us to elaborate on the continuum hypothesis, which remains an unsolved problem in mathematics.

Abstract:The need to describe abrupt changes or response of nonlinear systems to impulsive stimuli is ubiquitous in applications. Also the informal use of infinitesimal and infinite quantities is still a method used to construct idealized but tractable models within the famous J. von Neumann reasonably wide area of applicability. We review the theory of generalized smooth functions as a candidate to address both these needs: a rigorous but simple language of infinitesimal and infinite quantities, and the possibility to deal with continuous and generalized function as if they were smooth maps: with pointwise values, free composition and hence nonlinear operations, all the classical theorems of calculus, a good integration theory, and new existence results for differential equations. We exemplify the applications of this theory through several models of singular dynamical systems: deduction of the heat and wave equations extended to generalized functions, a singular variable length pendulum wrapping on a parallelepiped, the oscillation of a pendulum damped by different media, a nonlinear stress-strain model of steel, singular Lagrangians as used in optics, and some examples from quantum mechanics.

Kolmogorov's Calculus of Problems and Its Legacy

Abstract:Kolmogorov's Calculus of Problems is an interpretation of Heyting's intuitionistic propositional calculus published by A.N. Kolmogorov in 1932. Unlike Heyting's intended interpretation of this calculus, Kolmogorov's interpretation does not comply with the philosophical principles of Mathematical Intuitionism. This philosophical difference between Kolmogorov and Heyting implies different treatments of problems and propositions: while in Heyting's view the difference between problems and propositions is merely linguistic, Kolmogorov keeps the two concepts apart and does not apply his calculus to propositions. I stress differences between Kolmogorov's and Heyting's interpretations and show how the two interpretations diverged during their development. In this context I reconstruct Kolmogorov's philosophical views on mathematics and analyse his original take on the Hilbert-Brouwer controversy. Finally, I overview some later works motivated by Kolmogorov's Calculus of Problems and propose a justification of Kolmogorov's distinction between problems and propositions in terms of Univalent Mathematics.
