Abstract:STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Color matching in restorative and prosthetic dentistry is important for the success of dental treatments, although communication with the dental laboratory remains subjective, and studies of the performance of objective communication methods are lacking.PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate color differences (ΔE) and compare color luminosity (L*) values among different types of digital photography equipment used to document tooth color, with and without a gray reference card, and to determine whether the gray card could be used to standardize color assessment in dental photography.MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixty photographs were made (n=10) using different equipment: a D7000 digital camera (Nikon Corp) with an 85-mm lens and wireless close-up flash (DC+WCF); close-up flash surrounded by 80 grams per square meter (gsm; specification of paper thickness) white printing paper (DC+WPP); ring flash (DC+RF); close-up flash attached to a dual-point rigid flash bracket (DC+DPRF); cross-polarizing filter attached to a close-up flash (DC+CPF); and iPhone 7 (I7). For all photographs, a gray reference card with known color values was positioned at the patients' mandibular teeth, acting as a parameter for the analysis of white-balanced digital photographs. Each photograph underwent white balance with the reference card and software. ΔE were obtained from each piece of equipment by comparing images with and without white balance (original photo) with software and the smallest ΔE achieved was used as the gold standard for comparisons of luminosity. Values of luminosity were subsequently obtained for the different equipment with and without white balancing the photographs; these values were compared using a general estimating equation with Huber-White standard error (α=.05).RESULTS: The use of a cross-polarizing filter was used as the gold standard for luminosity evaluation, as the smallest ΔE (3.4) among photographs were observed when those with and without white balance were compared. Luminosity results from the cross-polarizing filter method (DC+CPF) were not significantly different from those of the DC+DPRF (P=.73), DC+WPP (P=.106), and DC+WCF (P=.551) groups but were statistically different from DC+RF (P=.028) and I7 groups (P<.001). Use of a gray card was significant when a ring flash (P=.008) or the iPhone (P=.023) were used but not statistically significant for the other groups (P>.05).CONCLUSIONS: The use of a cross-polarizing filter results in more color-standardized photographs, while the ring flash system and the iPhone 7 result in less standardized photographs. The gray reference card had a significant effect when a ring flash system or iPhone 7 was used.

Abstract:Accurate and reproducible color capture is vital in medical photography. Camera distance and angle are particularly important as they are highly variable in a clinical setting. To account for variability in illumination, camera technology, and geometric effects, color standards are often used for color correction. To explore how geometry affects color, we quantified the change in CIELAB color value of a color standard for diverse skin tones at varying smartphone camera distances and angles. Whereas both chromaticity (a* and b*) and lightness (L*) were affected by angle, distance only affected L* (standard error of measurement, SEM > 1 CIELAB unit). Flash usage did not generally reduce distance and angle associated variability. Compared to compressed (JPG) format, raw (DNG) images had decreased median variability across different distances and angles. These findings suggest that in medical photography, inconsistent camera distance and angle can increase variability in photographed skin appearance over time. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To develop a new color matching method in dentistry by application of digital photography.METHODS:Digital photographs were obtained of Vitapan 3D-Master shade guide and natural teeth under the same condition, the L*a*b* values of each digital photography were assessed and analyzed by Photoshop CS4.RESULTS:The Vitapan 3D-Master shade guide was divided into 5 groups, the L* values were similar in each group, but decreased from group 1 to 5. The a* values of L1.5 and L2.5 were minimum, R1.5 and R2.5 were maximum and M1-M3 were intermediate. Compared with Vitapan 3D-Master shade guide, the L*a*b* values of natural teeth were higher.CONCLUSION:Digital photography can basically reflect the color of Vitapan 3D-Master shade guide, and provides a reference for color matching in dentistry.

Abstract:Abstract Background The rapidly increasing modalities and mediums of clinical photography, use of 3-dimensional (3D) and 4-dimensional (4D) patient modeling, and widening implementation of cloud-based storage and artificial intelligence (AI) call for an overview of various methods currently in use as well as future considerations in the field. Objectives Through a close look at the methods used in aesthetic surgery photography, clinicians will be able to select the modality best suited to their practice and goals. Methods Review and discussion of current data pertaining to: 2-dimensional (2D) and 3D clinical photography, current photography software, augmented reality reconstruction, AI photography, and cloud-based storage. Results Important considerations for current image capture include a device with a gridded viewing screen and high megapixel resolution, a tripod with leveling base, studio lighting with dual-sourced light, standardized matte finish background, and consistency in patient orientation. Currently, 3D and 4D photography devices offer advantages such as improved communication to the patient on outcome expectation and better quality of patient service and safety. AI may contribute to post-capture processing and 3D printing of postoperative outcomes. Current smartphones distort patient perceptions about their appearance and should be used cautiously in an aesthetic surgery setting. Cloud-based storage provides flexibility, cost, and ease of service while remaining vulnerable to data breaches. Conclusions While there are advancements to be made in the physical equipment and preparation for the photograph, the future of clinical photography will be heavily influenced by innovations in software and 3D and 4D modeling of outcomes.
Quantification of faults resulting from disregard of standardised facial photography

Abstract:Medical photography is an important part of documentary procedures in plastic surgery both for quality assurance and for protecting surgeons from possible medico-legal claims filed by patients. Photo documentary standards were established to make photos reliable and to enable comparisons between pre- and post-operative views of a patient, different operative procedures and between results achieved by different surgeons. Despite their obvious importance, especially in the documentation of subtle surgical procedures on the face such as rhinoplasty, photo documentary standards continue to be disregarded. In this article, we analyse and quantify faults caused by even small deviations from photo documentary standards. Photos of 10 healthy, young adults (n = 10) taken in accordance with established standards were compared to photos with the similar types of faults in positioning of the head (±10° deviation from the standard), camera angles (±10° deviation from standard) or mimic expression (slight smile). A computer-assisted facial analysis was performed and the effects of faulty photo documentation on the final result were calculated. The analysis showed, for instance, that a +10° fault in positioning of the head causes a mean shortening of the nasal dorsum by 32.34% (p<0.001) and of the front by 15.33% (p = 0.001), whereas the chin is elongated by 6.82% (p = 0.004). A -10° fault elongates the nasal dorsum by 11.93% (p<0.001) and shortens the upper lip by 22.50% (p = 0.007) and the chin by 13.67% (p = 0.001). Deviations from standardised camera angles lead to similar mistakes, but to a lesser extent. A mistake in mimic expression leads to a shortening of the upper lip by 23.20% (p = 0.006) and also to a clear cheek lift. We show that slight deviations from photo documentary standards result in dramatic faults in the final outcome.
Comparison of the colour accuracy of a single-lens reflex camera and a smartphone camera in a clinical context

Abstract:Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the colour accuracy of digital photographs captured by a single-lens reflex (SLR) camera and a smartphone camera in a clinical setting. Methods: Dentate subjects were recruited, and their maxillary anterior teeth were photographed along with a colour target and a dental shade guide. There were eight groups: Group 1: SLR camera with a 100 mm macro-lens and a ring-flash (SLRC); Group 2: SLRC with a polarizer; Group 3: SLRC with white-balance calibration; Group 4: SLRC with a polarizer and white-balance calibration. Groups 5 to 8 were similar to Groups 1 to 4, except a smartphone camera and an external light source (SC) were used. The CIE LAB coordinates of the colour target, shade guide, and centre of the maxillary right central incisor (tooth 11) in the digital photographs were retrieved. The colour difference ΔE=[(ΔL*)2+(Δa*)2+(Δb*)2]1/2 to the reference colour coordinates or the reading of the dental spectrophotometer was calculated. The results were analysed by the Kruskal-Wallis test at α=0.05 with Bonferroni correction. Results: Thirty-nine subjects were photographed. SLRC with a polarizer showed the largest ΔE in this study (P<0.001). When capturing tooth 11, SLRC with calibrated white-balance resulted in the smallest ΔE in this study (P<0.001), and the use of a polarizer and/or calibrated white-balance did not result in a smaller ΔE than that of SC alone (P>0.001). Conclusion: Calibration for white-balance is recommended for the SLRC. The use of a polarizer does not show an improvement in colour accuracy. SC alone may be sufficient for intraoral photography. Clinical significance: When capturing intraoral photography using a single-lens reflex camera, it is recommended to calibrate the white-balance. The use of a polarizer does not significantly improve colour accuracy. However, a smartphone camera with an external light source can serve as a viable alternative.

Abstract:Telemedicine and the medical "big data" era in ophthalmology highlight the use of non-mydriatic ocular fundus photography, which has given rise to indispensable applications of portable fundus cameras. However, in the case of portable fundus photography, non-mydriatic image quality is more vulnerable to distortions, such as uneven illumination, color distortion, blur, and low contrast. Such distortions are called generic quality distortions. This paper proposes an algorithm capable of selecting images of fair generic quality that would be especially useful to assist inexperienced individuals in collecting meaningful and interpretable data with consistency. The algorithm is based on three characteristics of the human visual system-multi-channel sensation, just noticeable blur, and the contrast sensitivity function to detect illumination and color distortion, blur, and low contrast distortion, respectively. A total of 536 retinal images, 280 from proprietary databases and 256 from public databases, were graded independently by one senior and two junior ophthalmologists, such that three partial measures of quality and generic overall quality were classified into two categories. Binary classification was implemented by the support vector machine and the decision tree, and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were obtained and plotted to analyze the performance of the proposed algorithm. The experimental results revealed that the generic overall quality classification achieved a sensitivity of 87.45% at a specificity of 91.66%, with an area under the ROC curve of 0.9452, indicating the value of applying the algorithm, which is based on the human vision system, to assess the image quality of non-mydriatic photography, especially for low-cost ophthalmological telemedicine applications.

Abstract:Abstract Dermatology, being a visual specialty, lends itself well to the advent of telemedicine. Utilization of teledermatology has been greatly expanded since the COVID-19 pandemic. Patients are increasingly making use of their own personal devices to capture images of their skin conditions to show the clinician. Advances in cameras of mobile phone devices have also encouraged good-quality image capturing. However, mobile phone cameras have inbuilt software that is often calibrated to deliver appealing consumer photography. Each company has their own software and marketing regarding this. The present pilot study aims to compare the colour accuracy of DSLR and mobile phone cameras used in dermoscopy images. Dermoscopic images allow for consistent lighting to standardize comparison. We used a DSLR camera (Nikon D7200 body with the DermLite Foto II Pro dermoscopy lens) as the standard for comparison, which is likely to produce a better image. Four mobile phones were used (Apple iPhone 12 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Note 8, Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, and Google Pixel 7A) and dermoscopy images were captured through a Heine DELTAone. Three photos of a melanocytic naevus each from five participants were taken. All raw images were transferred to a computer and analysed with FIJI, ImageJ freeware. RGB images were converted to the CIELAB colour space. The CIELAB colour space was used as a device-independent model to compare colour difference, which was determined by the computation of total colour difference (ΔE). ΔE values in all participants were calculated, with the lowest mean difference for Pixel 7A (12.9), followed by iPhone 12 Pro (18.6), Note 8 (20.0) and S21 Ultra (26.1). Of note, there was a greater mean difference across all devices in our participants of Afro-Caribbean ethnicity (25.7) compared with other participants. There is variation in colour accuracy between mobile phone devices in comparison with DSLR photography for our dermoscopic images of melanocytic naevi. This difference appears more pronounced in Black individuals. It is important for dermatologists to be aware of the devices used in capturing these images when they are used as part of any telemedicine service. Careful consideration is required for assessing rashes in patients with darker skin tones, especially as those clinical photographs would not have consistent lighting and exposure factors, which can influence the final image. The study can be expanded to include more participants and images to further investigate these differences.

Abstract:This article on digital radiography image acquisition is the first of two articles written as part of an intersociety effort to establish image quality standards for digital and computed radiography. The topic of the other paper is digital radiography image processing and display. The articles were developed collaboratively by the ACR, the American Association of Physicists in Medicine, and the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine. Increasingly, medical imaging and patient information are being managed using digital data during acquisition, transmission, storage, display, interpretation, and consultation. Data management during each of these operations has a direct impact on the quality of patient care. These articles describe what is known to improve image quality for digital and computed radiography and make recommendations on optimal acquisition, processing, and display. The practice of digital radiography is a rapidly evolving technology that will require the timely revision of any guidelines and standards. This document provides a basis for the technologies available today in clinical practice and may be useful in guiding the future clinical practice of digital radiography.

Abstract:Government, media and public focus on waiting times in the National Health Service in the United Kingdom has forced the organization to look closely at the process by which a patient progresses through an increasingly complex and ever changing system. In an effort to streamline the patient journey or care pathway, modernizers have turned to business and manufacturing for solutions. Whilst medical photographers need to recognize their role in this context, they are also facing major technological modernization through the development of digital photography. Part 1 of this paper looks at the origins of some of the techniques presently being used to modernize the patient journey. Part 2 shows how these tools of modernization can be utilized to harness the advantages of digital technology to provide a modern and appropriate medical photography service in a large, disparate teaching hospital.
How Camera-to-Subject Distance and Height Affect Breast Measurement and Follow-Up Assessment in Plastic Surgery

Abstract:Background: Due to several factors that affect photograph quality, bias is inevitably present in two-dimensional (2D) breast photography. The principal variables affecting image performance at a fixed focus length are the distance between the camera and the subjects and the photography angles. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of camera-to-subject distances and camera height on breast measurement parameters to understand the trend of breast deformation and provide guidance for the accurate evaluation of planar follow-up. Methods: We enlisted 16 volunteers with various breast cup sizes (A-D). Frontal and lateral photos were obtained with a steady focus of 50 mm at distances between 1.10 m and 2.20 m and at heights between 30 cm above the nipple and 30 cm below the nipple at intervals of 10 cm. Two researchers independently evaluated each volunteer's breast aesthetic parameters, including 11 linear parameters, 3 area parameters, and 3 ratio parameters, using Vernier calipers and Photoshop. Results: The correlation coefficient of the two investigators ranged from 0.922 to 0.999. The results measured by Photoshop were 29.67 ± 5.23% greater than those of the Vernier caliper (p < 0.01). In contrast to ratio parameters, which showed no significant changes in each distance group (p = 1.00), linear parameters and area parameters significantly increased as object distance decreased (p < 0.05). The lower pole of the breast grew wider and flatter and occupied a larger proportion of the breast as height declined. Conclusion: Camera-to-subject distances of 1.5-1.7 m are recommended for stabilized and uniform breast photography. Varying shooting height affects breast distortion. Quantifying the relationship between photographic conditions and breast morphology enables plastic surgeons to conduct more comprehensive and accurate assessments. Lack of depth of field is one of the most possible problems for new learners. In dental photography, the control of depth of field depends on aperture only, deep depth of field can be achieved by decreasing the aperture. The parameters of exposure include aperture, shutter speed, flash intensity and ISO, which control the exposure together. The area of pictures is controlled by proportion, with manual exposure for getting right exposure. Manual focusing is suggested instead of auto focusing. The appropriate technology, method and right area are the most important factors for dental photography, and later treatment has to be avoided.

Abstract:Objective: Orthognathic surgery is a viable and reproducible treatment for facial deformities. Despite the precision of the skeletal planning of surgical procedures, there is little information about the relations between hard and soft tissues in three-dimensional (3D) analysis, resulting in unpredictable soft tissue outcomes. Three-dimensional photography is a viable tool for soft tissue analysis because it is easy to use, has wide availability, low cost, and is harmless. This review aims to establish parameters for acquiring consistent and reproducible 3D facial images. Methods: A scoping review was conducted across PubMed, SCOPUS, Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), and Web of Science databases, adhering to "Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews" guidelines. Articles presenting 3D facial photographs in the diagnostic phase were considered. Results: A total of 79 articles were identified, of which 29 were selected for analysis. Conclusion: The predominant use of automated systems like 3dMD and VECTRA M3 was noted. User positioning has highest agreement among authors. Noteworthy aspects include the importance of proper lighting, facial expression, and dental positioning, with observed discrepancies and inconsistencies among authors. Finally, the authors proposed a 3D image acquisition protocol based on this research findings.

Abstract:Over the last several decades, medical imaging technologies have proven so anatomically insightful that they have all but taken over management in many clinical situations. MRI, CT, and PET scanning technologies employ stringently controlled rotational data-harvest protocols. By contrast, standardization of visible-light imaging of human anatomy has lagged dramatically. Computational image analysis of distortion, sharpness, and depth of field in a next-generation hybrid exoscopic and microsurgical operative platform

Abstract:Objective: The development of surgical microscope-associated cameras has given rise to a new operating style embodied by hybrid microsurgical and exoscopic operative systems. These platforms utilize specialized camera systems to visualize cranial neuroanatomy at various depths. Our study aims to understand how different camera settings in a novel hybrid exoscope system influence image quality in the context of neurosurgical procedures. Methods: We built an image database using captured cadaveric dissection images obtained with a prototype version of a hybrid (microsurgical/exoscopic) operative platform. We performed comprehensive 4K-resolution image capture using 76 camera settings across three magnification levels and two working distances. Computer algorithms such as structural similarity (SSIM) and mean squared error (MSE) were used to measure image distortion across different camera settings. We utilized a Laplacian filter to compute the overall sharpness of the acquired images. Additionally, a monocular depth estimation deep learning model was used to examine the image's capability to visualize the depth of deeper structures accurately. Results: A total of 1,368 high-resolution pictures were captured. The SSIM index ranged from 0.63 to 0.85. The MSE was nearly zero for all image batches. It was determined that the exoscope could accurately detect both the sharpness and depth based on the Laplacian filter and depth maps, respectively. Our findings demonstrate that users can utilize the full range of camera settings available on the exoscope, including adjustments to aperture, color saturation, contrast, sharpness, and brilliance, without introducing significant image distortions relative to the standard mode. Conclusion: The evolution of the camera incorporated into a surgical microscope enables exoscopic visualization during cranial base surgery. Our result should encourage surgeons to take full advantage of the exoscope's extensive range of camera settings to match their personal preferences or specific clinical requirements of the surgical scenario. This places the exoscope as an invaluable asset in contemporary surgical practice, merging high-definition imaging with ergonomic design and adaptable operability.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to standardize clinical photogrammetric techniques, and to compare anthropometry with photogrammetry.MATERIAL AND METHODS: To standardize clinical photography, we have developed a photographic cephalostat and chair. We investigated the repeatability of the standardized clinical photogrammetric technique. Then, with 40 landmarks, a total of 96 anthropometric measurement items was obtained from 100 Koreans. Ninety six photogrammetric measurements from the same subjects were also obtained from standardized clinical photographs using Adobe Photoshop version 7.0 (Adobe Systems Corporation, San Jose, CA, USA). The photogrammetric and anthropometric measurement data (mm, degree) were then compared. A coefficient was obtained by dividing the anthropometric measurements by the photogrammetric measurements.RESULTS: The repeatability of the standardized photography was statistically significantly high (p=0.463). Among the 96 measurement items, 44 items were reliable; for these items the photogrammetric measurements were not different to the anthropometric measurements. The remaining 52 items must be classified as unreliable.CONCLUSIONS: By developing a photographic cephalostat and chair, we have standardized clinical photogrammetric techniques. The reliable set of measurement items can be used as anthropometric measurements. For unreliable measurement items, applying a suitable coefficient to the photogrammetric measurement allows the anthropometric measurement to be obtained indirectly.
