Abstract:Wavy film flow of incompressible Newtonian fluid down an inclined plane is considered. The question is posed as to the parametric conditions under which the description of evolution can be approximately reduced for all time to a single evolution equation for the film thickness. An unconventional perturbation approach yields the most general evolution equation and least restrictive conditions on its validity. The advantages of this equation for analytical and numerical studies of 3D waves in inclined films are pointed out.

Abstract:Integrable standard and nonlocal derivative nonlinear Schrödinger equations are investigated. The direct and inverse scattering are constructed for these equations; included are both the Riemann–Hilbert and Gel’fand–Levitan–Marchenko approaches and soliton solutions. As a typical application, it is shown how these derivative NLS equations can be obtained as asymptotic limits from a nonlinear Klein–Gordon equation.

Abstract:We study the Cauchy problem for the (2+1) integrable nonlinear Schrödinger equation by the inverse scattering transform (IST) method. This Cauchy problem with given initial data and boundary data at infinity is reduced by IST to the Cauchy problem for the linear Schrödinger equation, in which the potential is expressed in terms of boundary data. The results on direct and inverse scattering problems for a two-dimensional Dirac system with special potentials are used and refined. The Cauchy problem admits an explicit solution if the IST of the solution is an integral operator of rank 1. We give one such solution.

Abstract:We prove integrability of a generalised non-commutative fourth order quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equation. The proof is relatively succinct and rooted in the linearisation method pioneered by Ch. Poppe. It is based on solving the corresponding linearised partial differential system to generate an evolutionary Hankel operator for the `scattering data'. The time-evolutionary solution to the non-commutative nonlinear partial differential system is then generated by solving a linear Fredholm equation which corresponds to the Marchenko equation. The integrability of reverse space-time and reverse time nonlocal versions, in the sense of Ablowitz and Musslimani, of the fourth order quintic nonlinear Schrodinger equation are proved contiguously by the approach adopted. Further, we implement a numerical integration scheme based on the analytical approach above which involves solving the linearised partial differential system followed by numerically solving the linear Fredholm equation to generate the solution at any given time.

Abstract:The Quantum Inverse Scattering Method is a scheme for solving integrable models in $1+1$ dimensions, building on an $R$-matrix that satisfies the Yang--Baxter equation and in terms of which one constructs a commuting family of transfer matrices. In the standard formulation, this $R$-matrix acts on a tensor product of vector spaces. Here, we relax this tensorial property and develop a framework for describing and analysing integrable models based on planar algebras, allowing non-separable \textit{$R$-operators} satisfying \textit{generalised} Yang--Baxter equations. We also re-evaluate the notion of integrals of motion and characterise when an (algebraic) \textit{transfer operator} is polynomial in a single integral of motion. We refer to such models as {\em polynomially integrable}. In an eight-vertex model, we demonstrate that the corresponding transfer operator is polynomial in the natural hamiltonian. In the Temperley--Lieb loop model with loop fugacity $\beta\in\mathbb{C}$, we likewise find that, for all but finitely many $\beta$-values, the transfer operator is polynomial in the usual hamiltonian element of the Temperley--Lieb algebra $\mathrm{TL}_n(\beta)$, at least for $n\leq17$. Moreover, we find that this model admits a second canonical hamiltonian, and that this hamiltonian also acts as a polynomial integrability generator for small $n$ and all but finitely many $\beta$-values.

Abstract:Four lectures given at Nankai Institute of Mathematics, Tianjin, China, 5--13 April 1991 present an elementary introduction into the quantum integrable models aimed for mathematical physicists and mathematicians. The stress is made on the algebraic aspects of the theory and the problem of determining the spectrum of quantum integrals of motion. The XXX magnetic chain is used as the basic example. Two lectures are devoted to a detailed exposition of the Functional Bethe Ansatz --- a new technique alternative to the Algebraic Bethe Ansatz --- and its relation to the separation of variable method. A possibility to extend FBA to the $SL(3)$ is discussed.

On the proximity between the wave dynamics of the integrable focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation and its non-integrable generalizations

Abstract:The question of whether features and behaviors that are characteristic to completely integrable systems persist in the transition to non-integrable settings is a central one in the field of nonlinear dispersive equations. In this work, we investigate this topic in the context of focusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations. In particular, we consider non-integrable counterparts of the (integrable) focusing cubic NLS equation, which are distinct generalizations of cubic NLS and involve a broad class of nonlinearities, with the cases of power and saturable nonlinearities serving as illustrative examples. This is a notably different direction from the one explored in other works, where the non-integrable models considered are only small perturbations of the integrable one. We study the Cauchy problem on the real line for both vanishing and non-vanishing boundary conditions at infinity and quantify the proximity of solutions between the integrable and non-integrable models via estimates in appropriate metrics as well as pointwise. These results establish that the distance of solutions grows at most linearly with respect to time, while the growth rate of each solution is chiefly controlled by the size of the initial data and the nonlinearity parameters. A major implication of these closeness estimates is that integrable dynamics emerging from small initial conditions may persist in the non-integrable setting for significantly long times. In the case of zero boundary conditions at infinity, this persistence includes soliton and soliton collision dynamics, while in the case of nonzero boundary conditions at infinity, it establishes the nonlinear behavior of the non-integrable models at the early stages of the ubiquitous phenomenon of modulational instability. Abstract:We argue that the recently discovered bilinear superintegrability <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2206.02045" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2206.02045">arXiv:2206.02045</a> generalizes, in a non-trivial way, to monomial matrix models in pure phase. The structure is much richer: for the trivial core Schur functions required modifications are minor, and the only new ingredient is a certain (contour-dependent) permutation matrix; for non-trivial-core Schur functions, in both bi-linear and tri-linear averages the deformation is more complicated: averages acquire extra N-dependent factors and selection rule is less straightforward to imply.

Abstract:Classical integrable Hamiltonian systems generated by elements of the Poisson commuting ring of spectral invariants on rational coadjoint orbits of the loop algebra$$\widetilde{\mathfrak{g}\mathfrak{l}}^{ + *} (2,\mathbb{R})$$ are integrated by separation of variables in the Hamilton-Jacobi equation in hyperellipsoidal coordinates. The canonically quantized systems are then shown to also be completely integrable and separable within the same coordinates. Pairs of second class constraints defining reduced phase spaces are implemented in the quantized systems by choosing one constraint as an invariant, and interpreting the other as determining a quotient (i.e. by treating one as a first class constraint and the other as a gauge condition). Completely integrable, separable systems on spheres and ellipsoids result, but those on ellipsoids require a further modification of order$$\mathcal{O}(\hbar ^2 )$$ in the commuting invariants in order to assure self-adjointness and to recover the Laplacian for the case of free motion. for each case — in the ambient space ℝn, the sphere and the ellipsoid — the Schrödinger equations are completely separated in hyperellipsoidal coordinates, giving equations of generalized Lamé type.

Integral identities and universal relations for solitons

Abstract:We show that any nonlinear field theory giving rise to static solutions with finite energy like, e.g., topological solitons, allows us to derive a continuous infinity of integral identities which any such solution has to obey. These integral identities can always be understood as being generated by field transformations and their related Noether currents. We also explain why all integral identities generated by coordinate transformations become trivial for Bogomolnyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) solitons, i.e., topological solitons which saturate a topological energy bound. Finally, we consider applications of these identities to a broad class of nonlinear scalar theories, including the Skyrme model. More concretely, we find nontrivial integral identities that can be seen as model-independent relations between certain physical properties of the solitons in such theories, and we comment on the possible connection between these new relations and those already found in the context of astrophysical compact objects. We also demonstrate the usefulness of said identities to estimate the precision of the numerical calculation of soliton observables.

Abstract:A special class of integrable nonlinear differential equations related to <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://A.III" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>-type symmetric spaces and having additional reductions are analyzed via the inverse scattering method (ISM). Using the dressing method we construct two classes of soliton solutions associated with the Lax operator. Next, by using the Wronskian relations, the mapping between the potential and the minimal sets of scattering data is constructed. Furthermore, completeness relations for the 'squared solutions' (generalized exponentials) are derived. Next, expansions of the potential and its variation are obtained. This demonstrates that the interpretation of the inverse scattering method as a generalized Fourier transform holds true. Finally, the Hamiltonian structures of these generalized multi-component Heisenberg ferromagnetic (MHF) type integrable models on <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://A.III" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a>-type symmetric spaces are briefly analyzed.

Abstract:The semiclassical limit of the focusing Nonlinear (cubic) Schr\" odinger Equation (NLS) corresponds to the singularly perturbed Zakharov Shabat (ZS) system that defines the direct and inverse scattering transforms (IST). In this paper, we derive explicit expressions for the leading order terms of these transforms, which are called semiclassical limits of the direct and inverse scattering transforms. Thus, we establish an explicit connection between the decaying initial data of the form $q(x,0)=A(x)e^{iS(x)}$ and the leading order term of its scattering data. This connection is expressed in terms of an integral transform that can be viewed as a complexified version of an Abel type transform. Our technique is not based on the WKB analysys of the ZS system, but on the inversion of the modulation equations that solve the inverse scattering problem in the leading order. The results are illustrated by a number of examples.

Abstract:In this paper, the inverse scattering transform for the integrable discrete nonlocal PT symmetric nonlinear Schrödinger equation with nonzero boundary conditions is presented. According to the two different signs of symmetry reduction and two different values of the phase difference between plus and minus infinity, we discuss four cases with significant differences about analytical regions, symmetry, asymptotic behavior and the presence or absence of discrete eigenvalues, namely, the existence or absence of soliton solutions. Therefore, in all cases, we study the direct scattering and inverse scattering problem, separately. The Riemann-Hilbert problem is constructed and solved as well as the reconstruction formula of potential is derived, respectively. Finally, combining the time evolution, we provide the dark, bright, dark-bright soliton solutions on the nonzero background in difference cases under the reflectionless condition.

Abstract:We apply the (direct and inverse) prolongation method to a couple of nonlinear Schrödinger equations. These are taken as a laboratory field model for analyzing the existence of a connection between the integrability property and loop algebras. Exploiting a realization of the Kac-Moody type of the incomplete prolongation algebra associated with the system under consideration, we develop a procedure which allows us to generate a new class of integrable nonlinear field equations containing the original ones as a special case.

Stability of Schur's iterates and fast solution of the discrete integrable NLS

Abstract:We prove a sharp stability estimate for Schur iterates of contractive analytic functions in the open unit disk. We then apply this result in the setting of the inverse scattering approach and obtain a fast algorithm for solving the discrete integrable nonlinear Schrödinger equation (Ablowitz-Ladik equation) on the integer lattice, $\mathbb{Z}$. We also give a self-contained introduction to the theory of the nonlinear Fourier transform from the perspective of Schur functions and orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle.
