A Carathéodory's Extension Theorem for Families Simpler Than an Algebras of Sets

Abstract:The Carathéodory's Extension Theorem is a powerful tool that allows us to generate a measure, over a sigma-algebra, from a pre-measure defined over an algebra of sets. However, although this result reduces our work to define a measure by only needing to define a pre-measure, it is not always easy to define the latter. The problem occurs when taking the smallest algebra that contains a family of targeted sets, it can be very complicated to consistently define the value of the pre-measure over its finite union of these sets - a union that is an element of the algebra. Thus, our objective in this article is to reproduce an extension theorem, just like the Carathéodory's Extension Theorem, but in the context of probability measures and replacing the need for a probability pre-measure defined over an algebra for now a quasi-measure defined over a refinement. The gain, then, is that the \textit{manual elaboration} of a quasi-measure is simpler than the elaboration of a pre-measure, since a refinement is a simpler structure than an algebra.

Abstract:The notion of $\theta$-FAM-linkedness, introduced in the second author's master thesis, is a formalization of the notion of strong FAM limits for intervals, whose initial form and applications have appeared in the work of Saharon Shelah, Jakob Kellner, and Anda Tănasie, for controlling cardinals characteristics of the continuum in ccc forcing extensions. This generalization was successful in such a thesis to establish a general theory of iterated forcing using finitely additive measures. In this paper, using probability theory tools developed in the same thesis, we refine Saharon Shelah's proof of the fact that random forcing is $\sigma$-FAM-linked and prove that any complete Boolean algebra with a strictly positive probability measure satisfying the $\theta$-density property is $\theta$-FAM-linked. As a consequence, we get a new collection of examples of $\theta$-FAM-linked forcing notions: the measure algebra adding $\theta$-many random reals.

Abstract:We give an alternative proof of a fact that a finite continuous non-decreasing submodular set function on a measurable space can be expressed as a supremum of measures dominated by the function, if there exists a class of sets which is totally ordered with respect to inclusion and generates the sigma-algebra of the space. The proof is elementary in the sense that the measure attaining the supremum in the claim is constructed by a standard extension theorem of measures. As a consequence, a uniquness of the supremum attaining measure also follows. A Polish space is an examples of the measurable space which has a class of totally ordered sets that generates the Borel sigma-algebra.

Abstract:Motivated by ideas from the model theory of metric structures, we introduce a metric set theory, $\mathsf{MSE}$, which takes bounded quantification as primitive and consists of a natural metric extensionality axiom (the distance between two sets is the Hausdorff distance between their extensions) and an approximate, non-deterministic form of full comprehension (for any real-valued formula $\varphi(x,y)$, tuple of parameters $a$, and $r < s$, there is a set containing the class $\{x: \varphi(x,a) \leq r\}$ and contained in the class $\{x:\varphi(x,a) < s\}$). We show that $\mathsf{MSE}$ is sufficient to develop classical mathematics after the addition of an appropriate axiom of infinity. We then construct canonical representatives of well-order types and prove that ultrametric models of $\mathsf{MSE}$ always contain externally ill-founded ordinals, conjecturing that this is true of all models. To establish several independence results and, in particular, consistency, we construct a variety of models, including pseudo-finite models and models containing arbitrarily large standard ordinals. Finally, we discuss how to formalize $\mathsf{MSE}$ in either continuous logic or Łukasiewicz logic.

Abstract:We construct measure which determines a two-variable mean in a very natural way. Using that measure we can extend the mean to infinite sets as well. E.g. we can calculate the geometric mean of any set with positive Lebesgue measure. We also study the properties and behavior of such generalized means that are obtained by a measure, and we provide some applications as well.

Abstract:A new construction of product measures is given for an arbitrary sequence of measure spaces via outer measure techniques giving a coherent extension of the classical theory of finite product measures to countable many. Moreover, the Lebesgue spaces of this measures are simplified in terms of finite product measures. This decomposition simplifies all the considerations regarding infinite dimensional integration and gives to it a computational framework.

Abstract:In this paper we look at the topological type of algebraic sum of achievement sets. We show that there is a Cantorval such that the algebraic sum of its $k$ copies is still a Cantorval for any $k \in \mathbb{N}$. We also prove that for any $m,p \in (\mathbb{N}\setminus \{1\}) \cup \{\infty\}$, $p \geq m$, the algebraic sum of $k$ copies of a Cantor set can transit from a Cantor set to a Cantorval for $k=m$ and then to an interval for $k=p$. These two main results are based on a new characterization of sequences whose achievement sets are Cantorvals. We also define a new family of achievable Cantorvals which are not generated by multigeometric series. In the final section we discuss various decompositions of sequences related to the topological typology of achievement sets.

Abstract:A construction of product measures is given for an arbitrary sequence of measure spaces via outer measure techniques without imposing any condition on the underlying measure spaces. This approach concludes finally the problem of the existence of product measures in an elementary manner. Moreover, the $L_{p}$ spaces of this measures are simplified in terms of finite product measures following the approach of [21]. This decomposition simplifies infinite dimensional integration and gives to this theory a computational framework.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a non-discrete LCA group with the dual group $\Gamma$. We define generalized group algebra, ${\mathcal L}^1(G)$, and generalized measure algebra, ${\mathcal M}(G),$ on $G$ as generalizations of the group algebra $L^1(G)$ and the measure algebra $M(G)$, respectively. Generalized Fourier transforms of elements of ${\mathcal L}^1(G)$ and generalized Fourier-Stieltjes transforms of elements of ${\mathcal M}(G)$ are also defined as generalizations of the Fourier transforms and the Fourier-Stieltjes transforms, respectively. The image ${\mathcal A}(\Gamma)$ of ${\mathcal L}^1(G)$ by the generalized Fourier transform becomes a function algebra on $\Gamma$ with norm inherited from ${\mathcal L}^1(G)$ through this transform. It is shown that ${\mathcal A}(\Gamma)$ is a natural Banach function algebra on\, $\Gamma$\,which is BSE and BED. It turns out that ${\mathcal L}^1(G)$ contains all Rajchman measures. Segal algebras in ${\mathcal L}^1(G)$ are defined and investigated. It is shown that there exists the smallest isometrically character invariant Segal algebra in ${\mathcal L}^1(G)$, which (eventually) coincides with the smallest isometrically character invariant Segal algebra in $L^1(G)$, the Feichtinger algebra of $G$. A notion of locally bounded elements of ${\mathcal M}(G)$ is introduced and investigated. It is shown that for each locally bounded element $\mu$ of ${\mathcal M}(G)$ there corresponds a unique Radon measure $\iota \mu$ on $G$ which characterizes $\mu$. We investigate the multiplier algebra $\mathbb{M}({\mathcal L}^1(G))$ of ${\mathcal L}^1(G)$, and obtain a result that there is a natural continuous isomorphism from $\mathbb{M} ({\mathcal L}^1(G))$ into $A(G)^*$, the algebra of pseudomeasures on $G$. When $G$ is compact, this map becomes surjective and isometric.

Abstract:Given a compact subset $\Sigma \subset \mathbb{R}$ (or $\mathbb{C}$) with logarithmic capacity greater than zero, we construct an explicit family of probability measures supported on $\Sigma$ such that their closure is all the possible weak limit measures of complete sets of conjugate algebraic integers lying inside $\Sigma$. We give an asymptotic formula for the number of algebraic integers with given degree and prescribed distribution. We exploit the algorithmic nature of our approach to give a family of upper bounds that converges to the smallest limiting trace-to-degree ratio of totally positive algebraic integers and improve the best previously known upper bound on the Schur-Siegel-Smyth trace problem to 1.8216.

Abstract:We introduce a real-valued measure ${m_L}$ on non-Archimedean ordered fields $(\mathbb{F},<)$ that extend the field of real numbers $(\mathbb{R},<)$. The definition of ${m_L}$ is inspired by the Loeb measures of hyperreal fields in the framework of Robinson's analysis with infinitesimals. The real-valued measure ${m_L}$ turns out to be general enough to obtain a canonical measurable representative in $\mathbb{F}$ for every Lebesgue measurable subset of $\mathbb{R}$, moreover, the measure of the two sets is equal. In addition, $m_L$ it is more expressive than a class of non-Archimedean uniform measures. We focus on the properties of the real-valued measure in the case where $\mathbb{F}=\mathcal{R}$, the Levi-Civita field. In particular, we compare ${m_L}$ with the uniform non-Archimedean measure over $\mathcal{R}$ developed by Shamseddine and Berz, and we prove that the first is infinitesimally close to the second, whenever the latter is defined. We also define a real-valued integral for functions on the Levi-Civita field, and we prove that every real continuous function has an integrable representative in $\mathcal{R}$. Recall that this result is false for the current non-Archimedean integration over $\mathcal{R}$. The paper concludes with a discussion on the representation of the Dirac distribution by pointwise functions on non-Archimedean domains.

Realization of monoids with countable sum

Abstract:For every infinite cardinal number $\kappa$, $\kappa$-monoids and their realization have recently been introduced and studied by Nazemian and Smertnig. A $\kappa$-monoid $H$ has a realization to a ring $R$ if there exists an element $x \in H$ such that $H$ is $\aleph_1 ^{-}$-braided over $\text{add}(\aleph_0 x)$, and $\text{add}(\aleph_0 x)$, as $\aleph_0$-monoid, has a realization to $R$. Furthermore, $H$ has a realization to hereditary rings if there exists an element $x \in H$ such that $H$ is braided over $\text{add}(x)$. These prompt an investigation into when $\aleph_0$-monoids have realizations. In this paper, we discuss the realization of $\aleph_0$-monoids and provide a complete characterization for the realization of two-generated ones in hereditary Von Neumann regular rings.

Limits of eventual families of sets with application to algorithms for the common fixed point problem

Abstract:We present an abstract framework for asymptotic analysis of convergence based on the notions of eventual families of sets that we define. A family of subsets of a given set is called here an "eventual family" if it is upper hereditary with respect to inclusion. We define accumulation points of eventual families in a Hausdorff Topological space and define the "image family" of an eventual family. Focusing on eventual families in the set of the integers enables us to talk about sequences of points. We expand our work to the notion of a "multiset" which is a modification of the concept of a set that allows for multiple instances of its elements and enable the development of "multifamilies" which are either "increasing" or "decreasing". The abstract structure created here is motivated by, and feeds back to, our look at the convergence analysis of an iterative process for asymptotically finding a common fixed point of a family of operators.

Abstract:We study measures defined on effect algebras. We characterize real-valued measures on effect algebras and find a class of effect algebras, that include the natural effect algebras of sets, on which sigma-additive measures with values in a finite dimensional Banach space are always bounded. We also prove that in effect algebras the Nikodym and the Grothendieck properties together imply the Vitali-Hahn-Saks property, and find an example of an effect algebra verifying the Vitali-Hahn-Saks property but failing to have the Nikodym property. Finally, we define the concept of variation for vector measures on effect algebras proving that in effect algebras verifying the Riesz Decomposition Property, the variation of a finitely additive vector measure is a finitely additive positive measure.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a new notion called the box-counting measure of a metric space. We show that for a doubling metric space, an Ahlfors regular measure is always a box-counting measure; consequently, if E is a self-similar set satisfying the open set condition, then the Hausdorff measure restricted to E is a box-counting measure. We show two classes of self-affine sets, the generalized Lalley-Gatzouras type self-affine sponges and Barański carpets, always admit box-counting measures; this also provides a very simple method to calculate the box-dimension of these fractals. Moreover, among others, we show that if two doubling metric spaces admit box-counting measures, then the multi-fractal spectra of the box-counting measures coincide provided the two spaces are Lipschitz equivalent.

Abstract:This paper is motivated by the study of probability measure-preserving (pmp) actions of free groups using continuous model theory. Such an action is treated as a metric structure that consists of the measure algebra of the probability measure space expanded by a family of its automorphisms. We prove that the existentially closed pmp actions of a given free group form an elementary class, and therefore the theory of pmp $\mathbb{F}_k$-actions has a model companion. We show this model companion is stable and has quantifier elimination. We also prove that the action of $\mathbb{F}_k$ on its profinite completion with the Haar measure is metrically generic and therefore, as we show, it is existentially closed. We deduce our main result from a more general theorem, which gives a set of sufficient conditions for the existence of a model companion for the theory of $\mathbb{F}_k$-actions on a separably categorical, stable metric structure.
