Abstract:Systematic and stable biases in the visual appearance of locomotor space may reflect functional coding strategies for the sake of more precisely guiding motor actions. Perceptual matching tasks and verbal estimates suggest that there is a systematic underestimation of egocentric distance along the ground plane in extended environments. Whereas underestimation has previously been understood as a mere failure of proper verbal calibration, such an interpretation cannot account for perceptual matching results. Moreover, we have observed that the subjective geometry of distance perception on the ground plane is quantitatively consistent with the explicit overestimation of angular gaze declination which we have measured independently of perceived distance. We suggest that there is a locally-consistent expansion of specific angular variables in visual experience that is useful for action, and that this stable expansion may aid action by retaining more precise angular information, despite the information being mis-scaled approximately linearly. Actions are effective in this distorted perceived space by being calibrated to their perceived consequences (but notice that this means that measuring spatial action parameters, such as walked distance, are not directly informative about perceived distance). We distinguish our view from reports of small judgmental biases moderated by semantic, social and emotional factors on the one hand (which might or might not involve changes in visual appearance) and also from the prevailing implicit assumption that the perceptual variables guiding action must be accurate. The perceptual variables guiding action must be stable in order to support action calibration and precise to support precise action. We suggest that the systematic biases evident in the visual (and haptic) phenomenology of locomotor space may reflect a functional coding strategy that can render actions that are coded in the same perceived space more effective than if space were perceived veridically. Shifts in the Eye-Centered Frame of Reference May Underlie Saccades, Visual Perception, and Eye-Hand Coordination

Abstract:Conventional, computational theories limit the understanding of how action and perception are controlled. In an alternative scheme, the nervous system controls the values of physical and neurophysiological parameters that predetermine the choice of the spatial frames of reference (FRs) for action and perception. For example, all possible eye positions, Q, can be considered as comprising a spatial FR in which extraocular muscles (EOMs) stabilize gaze directions. The origin or referent point of this FR is a specific, threshold eye position, R, at which EOMs can be quiescent but activated depending on the difference between Q and R. Starting before eye motion, shifts in R cause displacement of the FR and resetting of the stable equilibrium position to which the eyes are forced to move. Rather than corollary discharge, the depiction of visual images integrated across the entire retina in the shifted spatial FR is responsible for remapping visual receptive fields and visual constancy. These suggestions are illustrated in computer models of saccades in the referent control framework in humans and monkeys. The existence of three types of visual RF remapping during saccades is suggested. Properly scaled, shifts in the R underlying a saccade are transmitted to motoneurons of arm muscles to guide reach-to-grasp motion in the same, eye-centered FR. Some predictions of the proposed control scheme have been verified and new tests are suggested. The scheme is applicable to several eye-hand coordination deficits including micrography in Parkinson's disease and explains why vision helps deafferented subjects diminish movement deficits.
Transsaccadic integration of visual information is predictive, attention-based, and spatially precise

Abstract:Eye movements produce shifts in the positions of objects in the retinal image, but observers are able to integrate these shifting retinal images into a coherent representation of visual space. This ability is thought to be mediated by attention-dependent saccade-related neural activity that is used by the visual system to anticipate the retinal consequences of impending eye movements. Previous investigations of the perceptual consequences of this predictive activity typically infer attentional allocation using indirect measures such as accuracy or reaction time. Here, we investigated the perceptual consequences of saccades using an objective measure of attentional allocation, reverse correlation. Human observers executed a saccade while monitoring a flickering target object flanked by flickering distractors and reported whether the average luminance of the target was lighter or darker than the background. Successful task performance required subjects to integrate visual information across the saccade. A reverse correlation analysis yielded a spatiotemporal "psychophysical kernel" characterizing how different parts of the stimulus contributed to the luminance decision throughout each trial. Just before the saccade, observers integrated luminance information from a distractor located at the post-saccadic retinal position of the target, indicating a predictive perceptual updating of the target. Observers did not integrate information from distractors placed in alternative locations, even when they were nearer to the target object. We also observed simultaneous predictive perceptual updating for two spatially distinct targets. These findings suggest both that shifting neural representations mediate the coherent representation of visual space, and that these shifts have significant consequences for transsaccadic perception.
Saccades to partially occluded objects: Perceptual completion mediates oculomotor control

Abstract:Oculomotor behavior typically consists of directing gaze to objects in complex scenes for the purpose of extracting detailed perceptual information. Here, we probed the nature of the visual representations over which saccades to objects are computed. We contrasted an image-based oculomotor control hypothesis, holding that saccades are computed solely over information explicit in the retinal image, and an object-based oculomotor control hypothesis, holding that saccades are computed over object representations reflecting the three-dimensional structure of the scene. We recorded saccade landing positions to partially occluded objects in a naturalistic search task. In Experiment 1, saccade landing positions were biased toward the center of the perceptually completed object. Experiment 2 demonstrated that the bias held even when it would have been strategically advantageous to avoid it. Experiment 3 demonstrated that the bias was not due to image-level differences generated by the presence of occluders. The results indicate that saccade motor programs are computed, at least in part, over object-level representations reflecting the completion of occluded surfaces.

Abstract:Abstract One of the most intriguing and controversial observations in oculomotor research in recent years is the phenomenon of express saccades in monkeys and man. These are saccades with such short reaction times (100 msec in man, 70 msec in monkeys) that some experts on eye movements still regard them as artifacts or as anticipatory reactions that do not need any further explanation. On the other hand, some research groups consider them not only authentic but also a valuable means of investigating the mechanisms of saccade generation, the coordination of vision and eye movements, and the mechanisms of visual attention. This target article puts together pieces of experimental evidence in oculomotor and related research – with special emphasis on the express saccade – to enhance our present understanding of the coordination of vision, visual attention, and the eye movements subserving visual perception and cognition. We hypothesize that an optomotor reflex is responsible for the occurrence of express saccades, one that is controlled by higher brain functions involved in disengaged visual attention and decision making. We propose a neural network as the basis for more elaborate mathematical models or computer simulations of the optomotor system in primates.

Abstract:The ability to accurately perceive and track moving objects is crucial for many everyday activities. In this study, we use a "double-drift stimulus" to explore the processing of visual motion signals that underlie perception, pursuit, and saccade responses to a moving object. Participants were presented with peripheral moving apertures filled with noise that either drifted orthogonally to the aperture's direction or had no net motion. Participants were asked to saccade to and track these targets with their gaze as soon as they appeared and then to report their direction. In the trials with internal motion, the target disappeared at saccade onset so that the first 100 ms of the postsaccadic pursuit response was driven uniquely by peripheral information gathered before saccade onset. This provided independent measures of perceptual, pursuit, and saccadic responses to the double-drift stimulus on a trial-by-trial basis. Our analysis revealed systematic differences between saccadic responses, on one hand, and perceptual and pursuit responses, on the other. These differences are unlikely to be caused by differences in the processing of motion signals because both saccades and pursuits seem to rely on shared target position and velocity information. We conclude that our results are instead due to a difference in how the processing mechanisms underlying perception, pursuit, and saccades combine motor signals with target position. These findings advance our understanding of the mechanisms underlying dissociation in visual processing between perception and eye movements.

Abstract:Human vision is stable and continuous in spite of the incessant interruptions produced by saccadic eye movements. These rapid eye movements serve vision by directing the high resolution fovea rapidly from one part of the visual scene to another. They should detract from vision because they generate two major problems: displacement of the retinal image with each saccade and blurring of the image during the saccade. This review considers the substantial advances in understanding the neuronal mechanisms underlying this visual stability derived primarily from neuronal recording and inactivation studies in the monkey, an excellent model for systems in the human brain. For the first problem, saccadic displacement, two neuronal candidates are salient. First are the neurons in frontal and parietal cortex with shifting receptive fields that provide anticipatory activity with each saccade and are driven by a corollary discharge. These could provide the mechanism for a retinotopic hypothesis of visual stability and possibly for a transsaccadic memory hypothesis, The second neuronal mechanism is provided by neurons whose visual response is modulated by eye position (gain field neurons) or are largely independent of eye position (real position neurons), and these neurons could provide the basis for a spatiotopic hypothesis. For the second problem, saccadic suppression, visual masking and corollary discharge are well established mechanisms, and possible neuronal correlates have been identified for each.

Abstract:When we view the world, our eyes saccade quickly between points of interest. Even when fixating a target our eyes are not completely at rest but execute small fixational eye movements (FEMs). That vision is not blurred despite this ever-present jitter has seemingly motivated an increasingly popular theory denying the reliance of the visual system on pure spatial processing in favor of a space-to-time mechanism generated by the eye drifting across the image. Accordingly, FEMs are not detrimental but rather essential to good visibility. However, the space-to-time theory is incompatible with physiological data showing that all information is conveyed by the short neural volleys generated when the eyes land on a target, and with our faithful perception of briefly displayed objects, during which time FEMs have no effect. Another difficulty in rejecting the idea of image representation by the locations and nature of responding cells in favor of a timecode, is that somewhere, somehow, this code must be decoded into a parallel spatial one when reaching perception. Thus, in addition to the implausibility of generating meaningful responses during retinal drift, the space-to-time hypothesis calls for replacing efficient point-to-point parallel transmission with a cumbersome, delayed, space-to-time-to-space process. A novel physiological framework is presented here wherein the ability of the visual system to quickly process information is mediated by the short, powerful neural volleys generated by the landing saccades. These volleys are necessary and sufficient for normal perception without FEMs contribution. This mechanism enables our excellent perception of brief stimuli and explains that visibility is not blurred by FEMs because they do not generate useful information.

Abstract:Perceiving and grasping an object present an animal with different sets of computational problems. The solution in primates entails the specialization of separate neural networks for visual processing with different object representations. This explains why the Ebbinghaus illusion minimally affects the grasping hand's in-flight aperture, which normally scales with target size, even though the size of the target disc remains misperceived. An attractive alternative account, however, posits that grasps are refractory to the illusion because participants fixate on the target and fail to attend to the surrounding context. To test this account, we tracked both limb and gaze while participants made forced-choice judgments of relative disc size in the Ebbinghaus illusion or did so in combination with grasping or manually estimating the size of one of the discs. We replicated the classic dissociation: grasp aperture was refractory to the measured illusory effect on perceived size, while judgments and manual estimates of disc size were not. Importantly, the number of display-wide saccades per second and the percentage of total fixation time or fixations directed at the selected disc failed to explain the dissociation. Our findings support the contention that object perception and goal-directed action rely on distinct visual representations.

Visual Motion Integration for Perception and Pursuit

Abstract:To examine the relationship between visual motion processing for perception and pursuit, we measured the pursuit eye-movement and perceptual responses to the same complex-motion stimuli. We show that humans can both perceive and pursue the motion of line-figure objects, even when partial occlusion makes the resulting image motion vastly different from the underlying object motion. Our results show that both perception and pursuit can perform largely accurate motion integration, ie the selective combination of local motion signals across the visual field to derive global object motion. Furthermore, because we manipulated perceived motion while keeping image motion identical, the observed parallel changes in perception and pursuit show that the motion signals driving steady-state pursuit and perception are linked. These findings disprove current pursuit models whose control strategy is to minimize retinal image motion, and suggest a new framework for the interplay between visual cortex and cerebellum in visuomotor control.

Physiological correlates of a simple saccadic-decision task to extended objects in superior colliculus

Abstract:Our vision is best only in the center of our gaze, and we use saccadic eye movements to direct gaze to objects and features of interest. We make more than 180,000 saccades per day, and accurate and efficient saccades are crucial for most visuo-motor tasks. Saccades are typically studied using small point stimuli, despite the fact that most real-world visual scenes are composed of extended objects. Recent studies in humans have shown that the initiation latency of saccades is strongly dependent on the size of the target (the “size-latency effect”), perhaps reflecting a tradeoff between the cost of making a saccade to a target and the expected information gain that would result. Here, we investigate the neuronal correlates of the size-latency effect in the macaque superior colliculus. We analyzed the latency variations of saccades to different size targets within a stochastic accumulator model framework. The model predicted a steeper increase in activity for smaller targets compared to larger ones. Surprisingly, the model also predicted an increase in saccade initiation threshold for larger targets. We found that the activity of intermediate-layer SC visuomotor neurons is in close agreement with the model predictions. We also found evidence that these effects may be a consequence of the visual responses of SC neurons to targets of different sizes. These results shed new light on the sources of delay within the saccadic system, a system that we heavily depend upon in the performance of most visuo-motor tasks.

The representation of stimulus features during stable fixation and active vision

Abstract:Predictive updating of object spatial coordinates from retinotopic pre-saccadic to post-saccadic positions contributes to stable visual perception. However, whether object features are predictively represented at the remapped location remains contested. Many previous studies showing evidence of feature remapping neglect the spatially invariant representation of features in the visual system. For example, feature-based attention boosts attended features across the entire visual field, potentially contributing to the maintenance of stimulus features across saccades. We set out to characterise the spatiotemporal dynamics of feature processing during stable fixation and active vision. To do so, we applied multivariate decoding methods to electroencephalography (EEG) data collected while participants viewed brief visual stimuli. Stimuli appeared at different locations across the visual field at either high or low spatial frequency (SF). During fixation, classifiers were trained to decode SF presented at one parafoveal location and cross-tested on SF from either the same, adjacent or more peripheral locations. When training and testing on the same location, SF was classified shortly after stimulus onset (~80 ms). Decoding of SF at locations farther from the trained location emerged later (~150-300 ms), with decoding latency modulated by eccentricity. This analysis provides a detailed time course for the spread of feature information across the visual field. Next, we investigated how active vision impacts the emergence of SF information. In the presence of a saccade, the decoding time of peripheral SF at parafoveal locations was accelerated, indicating predictive anticipation of SF due to the saccade. Crucially however, this predictive effect was not limited to the specific remapped location. Rather, peripheral SF was correctly classified, at an accelerated time course, at all parafoveal positions. This indicates a spatially coarse remapping of stimulus features during active vision, likely enabling a smooth transition on saccade landing.

Abstract:Eye-hand coordination is complicated by the fact that the eyes are constantly in motion relative to the head. This poses problems in interpreting the spatial information gathered from the retinas and using this to guide hand motion. In particular, eye-centered visual information must somehow be spatially updated across eye movements to be useful for future actions, and these representations must then be transformed into commands appropriate for arm motion. In this review, we present evidence that early visuomotor representations for arm movement are remapped relative to the gaze direction during each saccade. We find that this mechanism holds for targets in both far and near visual space. We then show how the brain incorporates the three-dimensional, rotary geometry of the eyes when interpreting retinal images and transforming these into commands for arm movement. Next, we explore the possibility that hand-eye alignment is optimized for the eye with the best field of view. Finally, we describe how head orientation influences the linkage between oculocentric visual frames and bodycentric motor frames. These findings are framed in terms of our 'conversion-on-demand' model, in which only those representations selected for action are put through the complex visuomotor transformations required for interaction with objects in personal space, thus providing a virtual on-line map of visuomotor space.
Separate timescales for spatial and anatomical information processing during action observation

Abstract:Abstract Introduction: Observing actions primes us to perform similar movements. Prior work indicates this effect is influenced by factors such as spatial congruence, perspective, and presenting biological/non-biological stimuli. We hypothesized that the influence of these factors would vary depending on the amount of time that participants had to process visual stimuli. Method: Experiment 1 was a reaction time task (n=29) with stimuli varying in spatial congruence (congruent, incongruent, neutral), perspective (first- or third-person) and stimulus type (biological or non-biological). Experiment 2 (n=50) used the same stimuli in a Forced Response paradigm, which controlled the time participants had to prepare a response. This allowed us to assess responses as a function of preparation time. Results: Experiment 1 showed effects of spatial congruence, with longer reaction times and more errors for spatially incongruent stimuli. This effect was greater for biological stimuli. Experiment 2 showed that spatial information was processed faster than anatomical information, inducing incorrect responses at short preparation times for spatially incongruent biological stimuli. There was little-to-no corresponding effect for non-biological stimuli. Both experiments also showed weak-to-no effects of perspective, which appear to have been driven by spatial congruence. Discussion: Our results indicate that spatial information is processed faster than anatomical information during action observation. These data are consistent with the dual visual streams hypothesis, whereby spatial information would be processed rapidly via the dorsal stream, while anatomical processing would occur later via the ventral stream. These data also indicate differences in processing between biological and non-biological stimuli.

Eye Movement Evidence for the V1 Saliency Hypothesis and the Central-peripheral Dichotomy Theory in an Anomalous Visual Search Task.

Abstract:Typically, searching for a target among uniformly tilted non-targets is easier when this target is perpendicular, rather than parallel, to the non-targets. The V1 Saliency Hypothesis (V1SH) - that V1 creates a saliency map to guide attention exogenously - predicts exactly the opposite in a special case: each target or non-target is a pair of equally-sized disks, a homo-pair of two disks of the same color, black or white, or a hetero-pair of two disks of the opposite color; the inter-disk displacement defines its orientation. This prediction - parallel advantage - was supported by the finding that parallel targets require shorter reaction times (RTs) to report targets' locations. Furthermore, it is stronger for targets further from the center of search images, as predicted by the Centralperipheral Dichotomy (CPD) theory entailing that saliency effects are stronger in peripheral than in central vision. However, the parallel advantage could arise from a shorter time required to recognize - rather than to shift attention to - the parallel target. By gaze tracking, the present study confirms that the parallel advantage is solely due to the RTs for the gaze to reach the target. Furthermore, when the gaze is sufficiently far from the target during search, saccade to a parallel, rather than perpendicular, target is more likely, demonstrating the Central-peripheral Dichotomy more directly. Parallel advantage is stronger among observers encouraged to let their search be guided by spontaneous gaze shifts, which are presumably guided by bottom-up saliency rather than top-down factors.
Perisaccadic perceptual mislocalization strength depends on the visual appearance of saccade targets

Abstract:We normally perceive a stable visual environment despite repetitive eye movements. To achieve such stability, visual processing integrates information across saccades, and laboratory hallmarks of such integration are robustly observed by presenting brief perimovement visual probes. In one classic phenomenon, perceived probe locations are grossly erroneous. This phenomenon is believed to depend, at least in part, on corollary discharge associated with saccade-related neuronal movement commands. However, we recently found that superior colliculus motor bursts, a known source of corollary discharge, can be different for different image appearances of the saccade target. Therefore, here we investigated whether perisaccadic perceptual mislocalization also depends on saccade-target appearance. We asked human participants to generate saccades to either low (0.5 cycles/deg) or high (5 cycles/deg) spatial frequency gratings. We always placed a high contrast target spot at grating center, to ensure matched saccades across image types. We presented brief perisaccadic probes, which were high in contrast to avoid saccadic suppression, and the subjects pointed (via mouse cursor) at their perceived locations. We observed stronger perisaccadic mislocalization for low spatial frequency saccade targets, and for upper visual field probe locations. This was despite matched saccade metrics and kinematics across conditions, and it was also despite matched probe visibility for the different saccade target images (low versus high spatial frequency gratings). To the extent that perisaccadic perceptual mislocalization depends on corollary discharge, our results suggest that such discharge might relay more than just spatial saccade vectors to the visual system; saccade-target visual features can also be transmitted.

Abstract:We make fast, "saccadic" eye movements to capture finely resolved foveal snapshots of the world but these saccades cause motion artefacts. The artefacts go unnoticed, perhaps because the brain suppresses them through subcortical oculomotor signals feeding back into visual cortex. Opposing views, however, claim that passive mechanisms suffice: saccadic shearing forces might render the retina insensitive to the artefacts or post-saccadic snapshots might mask them before they enter consciousness. Crucially, only active suppression could explain perceptual changes that precede saccades but existing evidence for presaccadic misperception are ill-suited for addressing this issue: Previous studies have found misperceptions of space for objects briefly flashed before saccades, but perhaps only because observers confused the timing of flashes and saccades before they could be tested ("postdiction"), and presaccadic motion perception might have appeared to decline because motion stimuli persisted past eye movement onset. Here we addressed these concerns using briefly flashed two-frame animations (50 ms) to probe people's motion sensitivity during and around saccades. We found that sensitivity declined before saccade onset, even when the probe appeared entirely outside the saccade, and this sensitivity decline was present for motion in every direction relative to saccade, ruling out problems with postdiction. Intriguingly, brief periods during the saccade produced negative sensitivity as if motion was reversed, arguably due to postsaccadic enhancement. These data suggest that motion perception is minimized during saccades through active suppression, complementing neurophysiological findings of colliculo-pulvinar projections that suppress the cortical middle temporal area around the time of the saccade.

Abstract:Coordination of goal-directed behavior depends on the brain's ability to recover the locations of relevant objects in the world. In humans, the visual system encodes the spatial organization of sensory inputs, but neurons in early visual areas map objects according to their retinal positions, rather than where they are in the world. How the brain computes world-referenced spatial information across eye movements has been widely researched and debated. Here, we tested whether shifts of covert attention are sufficiently precise in space and time to track an object's real-world location across eye movements. We found that observers' attentional selectivity is remarkably precise and is barely perturbed by the execution of saccades. Inspired by recent neurophysiological discoveries, we developed an observer model that rapidly estimates the real-world locations of objects and allocates attention within this reference frame. The model recapitulates the human data and provides a parsimonious explanation for previously reported phenomena in which observers allocate attention to task-irrelevant locations across eye movements. Our findings reveal that visual attention operates in real-world coordinates, which can be computed rapidly at the earliest stages of cortical processing.

Abstract:There are two main anatomically and physiologically defined visual pathways connecting the primary visual cortex with higher visual areas: the ventral and the dorsal pathway. The influential two-visual-systems hypothesis postulates that visual attributes are analyzed differently for different functions: in the dorsal pathway visual information is analyzed to guide actions, whereas in the ventral pathway visual information is analyzed for perceptual judgments. We here show that a person who cannot identify objects due to an extensive bilateral ventral brain lesion is able to judge the velocity at which an object moves. Moreover, both his velocity judgements and his interceptive actions are as susceptible to a motion illusion as those of people without brain lesions. These findings speak in favor of the idea that dorsal structures process information about attributes such as velocity, irrespective of whether such information is used for perceptual judgments or to guide actions.

Abstract:Introduction: Asymmetries in processing by the healthy brain demonstrate regularities that facilitate the modeling of brain operations. The goal of the present study was to determine asymmetries in saccadic metrics during visual exploration, devoid of confounding clutter in the visual field. Methods: Twenty healthy adults searched for a small, low-contrast gaze-contingent target on a blank computer screen. The target was visible, only if eye fixation was within a 5 deg. by 5 deg. area of the target's location. Results: Replicating previously-reported asymmetries, repeated measures contrast analyses indicated that up-directed saccades were executed earlier, were smaller in amplitude, and had greater probability than down-directed saccades. Given that saccade velocities are confounded by saccade amplitudes, it was also useful to investigate saccade kinematics of visual exploration, as a function of vertical saccade direction. Saccade kinematics were modeled for each participant, as a square root relationship between average saccade velocity (i.e., average velocity between launching and landing of a saccade) and corresponding saccade amplitude (Velocity = S*[Saccade Amplitude]0.5). A comparison of the vertical scaling parameter (S) for up- and down-directed saccades showed that up-directed saccades tended to be slower than down-directed ones. Discussion: To motivate future research, an ecological theory of asymmetric pre-saccadic inhibition was presented to explain the collection of vertical saccadic regularities. For example, given that the theory proposes strong inhibition for the releasing of reflexive down-directed prosaccades (cued by an attracting peripheral target below eye fixation), and weak inhibition for the releasing of up-directed prosaccades (cued by an attracting peripheral target above eye fixation), a prediction for future studies is longer reaction times for vertical anti-saccade cues above eye fixation. Finally, the present study with healthy individuals demonstrates a rationale for further study of vertical saccades in psychiatric disorders, as bio-markers for brain pathology.
