Abstract:Concentrations of 129I in rain, total deposition of 129I and 129I/127I isotope ratios at five sampling sites distributed over West-Germany were determined in 1994 and 1995 by neutron activation analysis. The different species of 129I in rain water — 129I attached to particulate matter, inorganic and organic forms of 129I — were also determined. The average concentration of 129I in rain ranged between (0.8±0.2)×10-12gl-1 and (2.4±0.7)×10-12gl-1 in the year 1994 and (1.3±0.4)×10-12gl-1 and (3.2±0.9)×10-12gl-1 in the year 1995. The total annual deposition of 129I varied from 7.8×10-10gm-2 to 16.3×10-10gm-2 in the year 1995. The concentrations of the inorganic fractions are the highest at most sampling sites. Values of inorganic 129I were found to range from 43.8% to 79.1%. The average 129I/127I isotope ratios vary between (9.7±3.9)×10-7 and (6.0±2.5)×10-7 during the year 1995. The data point to the North Sea as a huge 129I source, where most of the 129I emissions of the nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities at la Hague (France) and Sellafield (UK) end up.

Abstract:Huge amount of 129I has been emitted to the environment during the last decades from a variety of anthropogenic nuclear activities. Aerosols represent a carrier of iodine in the atmosphere in addition to gaseous forms for which data are lacking in Sweden. In this study the first time series of iodine isotopes (129I and 127I) in aerosols covering the period of 1983 to 2008 from two sites in Sweden are presented. The results show that both 129I and 127I concentrations are considerably higher in southern compared to northern Sweden. Furthermore there is a significant difference in the relative concentrations between the sites being ∼6 times higher for 129I compared to ∼3 times for 127I. The portion of the 129I related to dry deposition, based on aerosol data, represents only a minor amount of the total fallout which is dominated by wet deposition.

Weighted Multipass Methods for Global Illumination

Abstract:In multipass rendering, care has to be taken to include all light transport only once in the final solution. Therefore the different methods in current multipass configurations handle a perfectly disjunct part of the light transport. In this paper a Monte Carlo variance reduction technique is presented that probabilistically weights overlapping transport between different methods. A good heuristic for the weights is derived so that strengths of the respective methods are retained. The technique is applied to a combination of radiosity and bidirectional path tracing and significant improvement is obtained over the non‐weighted combination. This method promises to be a very useful extension to other multipass algorithms as well.

Abstract:Anthropogenic (129)I has been released to the environment in different ways and chemical species by human nuclear activities since the 1940s. These sources provide ideal tools to trace the dispersion of volatile pollutants in the atmosphere. Snow and seawater samples collected in Bellingshausen, Amundsen, and Ross Seas in Antarctica in 2011 were analyzed for (129)I and (127)I, including organic forms; it was observed that (129)I/(127)I atomic ratios in the Antarctic surface seawater ((6.1-13) × 10(-12)) are about 2 orders of magnitude lower than those in the Antarctic snow ((6.8-9.5) × 10(-10)), but 4-6 times higher than the prenuclear level (1.5 × 10(-12)), indicating a predominantly anthropogenic source of (129)I in the Antarctic environment. The (129)I level in snow in Antarctica is 2-4 orders of magnitude lower than that in the Northern Hemisphere, but is not significantly higher than that observed in other sites in the Southern Hemisphere. This feature indicates that (129)I in Antarctic snow mainly originates from atmospheric nuclear weapons testing from 1945 to 1980; resuspension and re-emission of the fallout (129)I in the Southern Hemisphere maintains the (129)I level in the Antarctic atmosphere. (129)I directly released to the atmosphere and re-emitted marine discharged (129)I from reprocessing plants in Europe might not significantly disperse to Antarctica.

Abstract:The concentration of (129)I was measured in 54 river waters discharging into the Baltic Sea from Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland and Germany. Sample collection was performed during a well-bracketed time interval (June-July 1999), thus allowing comparison of the rivers over a wide latitude range without the effect of long temporal spread. Although there is no direct input of anthropogenic (129)I in the watersheds, the concentration of the isotope is about two to three orders of magnitude higher than the expected pre-nuclear era natural values in the rivers of Finland and northern Sweden, and in the rivers of southern Sweden, Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia, Poland and Germany; the (129)I concentration may reach five orders of magnitude higher. Furthermore, there are significant correlations between the (129)I concentration and latitude and/or distance from the North Sea and between (129)I and Cl. These findings suggest seawater as a main source of (129)I to the rivers through atmospheric transport. Of the many chemical parameters investigated, the pH may account for some of the variability in (129)I concentrations of the rivers. The contribution from nuclear weapon tests and the Chernobyl accident to the riverine (129)I is insignificant compared to the releases from the nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities. The total flux of (129)I by rivers to the Baltic Sea and related basins represents minor amounts of the isotope pool in these marine waters. External radioactivity hazards from (129)I are considered to be negligible in the Baltic region. However, as the main (129)I intake to the human body is likely through water, due to the large amount of daily water consumption, more concern should be given to internal radioactivity hazard that may be associated with the isotope's localized elevated concentration in the human organs.
Anthropogenic iodine-129 in the Arctic Ocean and Nordic Seas: numerical modeling and prognoses

Abstract:A numerical model simulation has been used to predict extent and variability in the anthropogenic (129)I pollution in the Arctic Ocean and Nordic Seas region over a period of 100 years. The source function of (129)I used in the model is represented by a well-known history of discharges from the Sellafield and La Hague nuclear reprocessing facilities. The simulations suggest a fast transport and large inventory of the anthropogenic (129)I in the Arctic and North Atlantic Oceans. In a fictitious case of abrupt stop of the discharges, a rapid decline of inventories is observed in all compartments except the North Atlantic Ocean, the deep Nordic Seas and the deep Arctic Ocean. Within 15 years after the stop of releases, the model prediction indicates that near-equilibrium conditions are reached in all compartments.

Abstract:In recent years, particular attention was paid to the long-lived radionuclides discharged with authorized low-level radioactive liquid and gaseous effluents by the nuclear spent fuel reprocessing plants of La Hague and Sellafield. The knowledge of (129)I (half-life=15.7 x 10(6) a) distribution in the environment is required to assess the radiological impact to the environment and population living in the area under the direct influence of La Hague NRP discharges. Measurement difficulties of (129)I in environmental matrices, where it is usually present at trace level, limited data published on (129)I activity levels in the European and more particularly in the French territory. Studies conducted to qualify a new alternative measurement method, direct gamma-X spectrometry with experimental self-absorption correction, led to test samples collected in the La Hague marine and terrestrial environment : seaweeds, lichens, grass, bovine thyroids, etc. All these results, often already published separately for analytical purposes and treated for intercomparison exercises, are presented here together in a radioecological manner. The levels of (129)I activity and (129)I/(127)I ratios in these samples show the spatial and temporal influence of the La Hague NRP in its local near-field environment as well as at the regional scale along the French Channel coast.

Abstract:A large amount of radioiodine isotopes (mainly (131)I, t(1/2) = 8 days) was released from the accident at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP) in April-May 1986. An increase in childhood-thyroid cancer in the contaminated areas in Belarus, Russia and the Ukraine was demonstrated to be caused by radioiodine released at the time of the accident. However, there is a lack of quantitative data on the (131)I levels in the local environment (e.g. air, plant, soil). At this point, a long-lived iodine isotope, (129)I (t(1/2) = 15.7 million years), also released with a certain ratio to (131)I from CNPP, could be used for estimating the (131)I levels in the environment. In this paper we present analytical results of the (129)I concentrations and (129)I/(127)I atom ratios in soil samples collected from the CNPP exclusion zone (30-km zone), with the aim of assessing current contamination levels and distribution patterns. For the analysis of the iodine fraction in the investigated soil samples, the pyrohydrolysis method was utilized for separation of (127)I and (129)I nuclides, and subsequently their concentration was determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), respectively. The concentration of (129)I and the (129)I/(127)I atom ratio in the surface soil samples in the 30 km-zone of CNPP ranged from 4.6 to 170 mBq/kg, and from 1.4 x 10(-6) to 13 x 10(-6), respectively. These values are significantly higher than those from global (129)I fallout, indicating that most of the measured (129)I was due to the deposition of the accident. Stable iodine concentrations in this area were found to be very low (below 1 ppm) for most of the samples, suggesting the environmental iodine levels in this area to be potentially low. The (129)I/(137)Cs activity ratio in surface and sub-surface soils was not so constant, i.e., in the range (7.3-20.2) x 10(-7). This might be due to the different behavior of deposition and/or migration of these nuclides in soil. These results suggest the obtained data of (129)I to be useful for the reconstruction of the (131)I deposition in the contaminated areas.

Abstract:Sediments are an excellent archive for evaluation of time-series environmental contamination of water systems. Measurements of ultra-trace radioactive species, such as 129I, provide information for both chronologic calibration and anthropogenic emissions during the nuclear era. Here data are presented on 129I and other chemical parameters from two sediment cores collected in the Baltic Sea during 1997. The sediment sections have a relatively uniform grain size (clay–mud) and cover a period of about 50a. Distribution of 129I in the sediment strongly relates to the liquid release records from the nuclear reprocessing facilities at Sellafield and La Hague. However, syn- and post-depositional alteration of organic matter at the sediment–water interface and within the sediment column may have contributed to slightly obliterating the anthropogenic 129I signals. Indication of Chernobyl-derived 129I occurs in the sediment profile, but is apparently overridden by the overwhelming flux from the nuclear reprocessing facilities. Although the record did not cover the pre-nuclear era (before 1945) sections, the ultra sensitive 129I profile provides a potential tool for relative dating and monitoring sources of water and sediment to the region.

Abstract:Monitoring temporal variability of (129)I in the North Sea, a relatively large reservoir of radioactive discharges from the nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities, is vital for the environmental situation in the region. New information on concentration levels and distribution of (129)I and (127)I and their species forms (iodide and iodate) are gained here through sampling of surface water in 2010. The results show generally large spatial and temporal (compared to data from 2005) fluctuations of total (129)I and (127)I, and iodide and iodate. In samples south of 53°N, the level of (127)I(-) in 2010 was generally comparable or higher than in 2005. The results also show total (129)I concentrations comparable in the south, but 2-8 times lower in the north, to the analyses made in 2005. Different from total (129)I, the (129)I(-)/(129)IO3(-) values in the northern part were 2 times higher in 2010 than values observed in 2005. These variations in total (129)I and (127)I and their species are related to coastal water offshore propagation and surface currents that are linked to long-term and seasonal climatic changes over the North Atlantic and North Sea. Inventory estimation shows that >90% of (129)I resides in the Southern and German Bights, which also suggests negligible contribution from the Sellafield facility discharges when compared with that from the La Hague. Variability in discharge rate from La Hague may also affect the distribution patterns of (129)I in the North Sea on the monthly scale.

Abstract:The radioactive isotope 129I, with a half-life of 1.57 × 107 years, is widely used as a tracer to assess nuclear safety, to track environmental and geological events and to figure out the details of the stable iodine geochemical cycle. This work investigated the 129I and 127I distribution in water samples collected from the terrestrial (rivers, lakes and springs) and marine water systems (estuary and sea) in China. The measured 129I concentrations of (1-51) × 106 atoms/L and 129I/127I ratios of (0.03-21) × 10-10 shows the variability of 129I level in the water systems. The local permafrost and seasonal frozen environment play a key role in groundwater recharge in the Qinghai-Tibet region, which is reflected in the 129I distribution in surface water. The depth distribution of 129I in the water column of the South China Sea reflects the effluence of different currents. The results also indicate that the hydrosphere of China contains one to three orders of magnitude less 129I compared to those reported in Europe. Despite the large distance, the European nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities represent the major source of 129I in the hydrosphere of China through atmospheric transport. The contribution of the Fukushima nuclear accident to 129I levels in the hydrosphere of China was negligible.

Abstract:Iodine-129 has been used as a powerful tool for environmental tracing of human nuclear activities. In this work, a sediment core collected from Jiaozhou Bay, the east coast of China, in 2002 was analyzed for (129)I to investigate the influence of human nuclear activities in this region. Significantly enhanced (129)I level was observed in upper 70 cm of the sediment core, with peak values in the layer corresponding to 1957, 1964, 1974, 1986, and after 1990. The sources of (129)I and corresponding transport processes in this region are discussed, including nuclear weapons testing at the Pacific Proving Grounds, global fallout from a large numbers of nuclear weapon tests in 1963, the climax of Chinese nuclear weapons testing in the early 1970s, the Chernobyl accident in 1986, and long-distance dispersion of European reprocessing derived (129)I. The very well (129)I records of different human nuclear activities in the sediment core illustrate the potential application of (129)I in constraining ages and sedimentation rates of the recent sediment. The releases of (129)I from the European nuclear fuel reprocessing plants at La Hague (France) and Sellafield (UK) were found to dominate the inventory of (129)I in the Chinese sediments after 1990, not only the directly atmospheric releases of these reprocessing plants, but also re-emission of marine discharged (129)I of these reprocessing plants in the highly contaminated European seas.

Abstract:Anthropogenic 129I as a long-lived radioisotope of iodine has been considered as an ideal oceanographic tracer due to its high residence time and conservative property in the ocean. Surface water samples collected from the East China Sea (ECS) in August 2013 were analyzed for 129I, 127I and their inorganic chemical species in the first time. The measured 129I/127I ratio is 1-3 orders of magnitude higher than the pre-nuclear level, indicating its dominantly anthropogenic sources. Relatively high 129I levels were observed in the Yangtze River and its estuary, as well as in the southern Yellow Sea, and 129I level in seawater declines towards the ECS shelf. In the open sea, 129I and 127I in surface water exists mainly as iodate, while in Yangtze River estuary and some locations, iodide is dominated. The results indicate that the Fukushima nuclear accident has no detectable effects in the ECS until August 2013. The obtained results are used for investigation of interaction of various water masses and water circulation in the ECS, as well as the marine environment in this region. Meanwhile this work provides essential data for evaluation of the possible influence of the increasing NPPs along the coast of the ECS in the future.

Abstract:Abstract129I, the only natural radioactive isotope of iodine (T1/2=15.7×106a), has been artificially produced since the end of the forties by the different nuclear, civil as well as military, activities leading to an increase of the background levels especially in the Northern hemisphere. In the marine environment, seaweed is known to accumulate iodine isotopes at high concentration levels. 16 seaweed species were collected at Goury (France), under the direct influence of discharges of authorised low-level radioactive liquid effluents of La Hague nuclear fuel reprocessing plant, in October 1998 and March 1999. 129I/127I ratios, computed with stable iodine concentration and 129I activities measured on each sample, are significantly higher than the background levels. The heterogeneity of 129I levels with seaweed species is studied as well as temporal variations that are related to the data of the 129I liquid effluents released by the La Hague NRP. Concentration factors, estimated for all seaweed, agree with the recommended values and the 129I activity in seawater was evaluated and shows a variation factor of 1.7 between the two sampling periods.
