Abstract: The solar wind is found by Parker Solar Probe (PSP) to be abundant with Alfv\'enic velocity spikes and magnetic field kinks. Temperature enhancement is another remarkable feature associated with the Alfv\'enic spikes. How the prototype of these coincident phenomena is generated intermittently in the source region becomes a hot topic of wide concerns. Here we propose a new model introducing guide-field discontinuity into the interchange magnetic reconnection between open funnels and closed loops with different magnetic helicities. The modified interchange reconnection model not only can accelerate jet flows from the newly opening closed loop but also excite and launch Alfv\'enic wave pulses along the newly-reconnected and post-reconnected open flux tubes. We find that the modeling results can reproduce the following observational features: (1) Alfv\'en disturbance is pulsive in time and asymmetric in space; (2) Alfv\'enic pulse is compressible with temperature enhancement and density variation inside the pulse. We point out that three physical processes co-happening with Alfv\'en wave propagation can be responsible for the temperature enhancement: (a) convection of heated jet flow plasmas (decrease in density), (b) propagation of compressed slow-mode waves (increase in density), and (c) conduction of heat flux (weak change in density). We also suggest that the radial nonlinear evolution of the Alfv\'enic pulses should be taken into account to explain the formation of magnetic switchback geometry.
Classification of Enhanced Geoeffectiveness Resulting from High-Speed Solar Wind Streams Compressing Slower Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections

Abstract:High-speed solar wind streams (HSSs) interact with the preceding ambient solar wind to form Stream Interaction Regions (SIRs), which are a primary source of recurrent geomagnetic storms. However, HSSs may also encounter and subsequently interact with Interplanetary Coronal Mass Ejections (ICMEs). In particular, the impact of the interaction between slower ICMEs and faster HSSs, represents an unexplored area that requires further in-depth investigation. This specific interaction can give rise to unexpected geomagnetic storm signatures, diverging from the conventional expectations of individual SIR events sharing similar HSS properties. Our study presents a comprehensive analysis of solar wind data spanning from 1996 to 2020, capturing 23 instances where such encounters led to geomagnetic storms ($SymH$ $< -30$ nT). We determined that interaction events between preceding slower ICMEs and faster HSSs possess the potential to induce substantial storm activity, statistically nearly doubling the geoeffective impact in comparison to SIR storm events. The increase in the amplitude of the $SymH$ index appears to result from heightened dynamic pressure, often coupled with the concurrent amplification of the CMEs rearward $|B|$ and/or $B_z$ components.

Abstract:The near-Earth space environment is greatly affected by transient perturbations in the solar wind. One of the most obvious and important perturbations are solar wind dynamic pressure changes, which are sometimes positive (increasing with time) and sometimes negative (decreasing with time). When they arrive at the Earth, we can see the compression of the magnetosphere after the dynamic pressure increase, and the expansion of the magnetosphere after the dynamic pressure decrease. Previous and recent work have shown that they may produce vortices, ultra-low-frequency (ULF) waves, and aurorae in the magnetosphere and the ionosphere. In this work, we will review the previous and recent studies on these processes and seek to build a global picture of these processes from both observation and simulation.
High‐energy electron flux enhancement pattern in the outer radiation belt in response to the Alfvénic fluctuations within high‐speed solar wind stream: A statistical analysis

Abstract:The coupling response between solar wind structures and the magnetosphere is highly complex, leading to different effects in the outer radiation belt electron fluxes. Most Coronal Mass Ejections cause strong geomagnetic storms with short recovery phases, often 1-2 days. By contrast, High-Speed Solar Wind Streams lead to moderate and weak storms often with much longer recovery phases, from several to ∼10 days. The magnetosphere receives energy for a long time under the influence of the HSSs, considerably changing its dynamics. This in turn has an effect on the charged particles trapped in the outer radiation belt. Although the high-energy electron flux enhancements have received considerable attention, the high-energy electron flux enhancement pattern (L > 4) has not. This paper identifies 37 events with this enhancement pattern in the high-energy electron flux during the Van Allen Probes era. We find the enhancements coincident with HSS occurrence. The interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) exhibits north/south Bz fluctuations of Alfvénic nature with moderate amplitudes. The high-energy electron flux enhancements also correspond to long periods of auroral activity indicating a relationship to magnetotail dynamics. However, the AE index only reaches moderate values. Ultra-Low Frequency waves were present in all of the events and whistler-mode chorus waves were present in 89.1% of the events, providing a convenient scenario for wave-particle interactions. The radial gradient of the ULF wave power related to the L, under the influence of the HSSs, is necessary to trigger the physical processes responsible for this type of high-energy electron flux enhancement pattern. Abstract:<div>According to Parker's theory in the 1950s, the magnetic lines of force extending from the sun to the interplanetary appear to be Archimedean spirals. From 1960 to 1970, it was found that the interplanetary magnetic field not only follows the Archimedes spiral structure, but also has the characteristics of Alfvenic turbulence. How do these Alfvenic turbulence occur? What will be the characteristics when getting close to the Sun? Parker Solar Probe at 0.17au has found that there are often intermittent Alfvenic pulses (or called Alfvenic velocity spikes) in the solar wind. These pulses are high enough that the disturbed magnetic lines may even turn back. What's more interesting is that there is always a compressibility disturbance along with the Alfven pulse: the temperature and density inside and outside the Alfven pulse are different, the internal temperature is often higher than the external temperature, some of the internal density is higher than the external and some is lower than the external. The Alfven pulse often shows asymmetry on both sides: the magnetic field and velocity on one side are "clean" jumps, while on the other side are multiple small-scale disturbances of variables in the transition boundary layer. In view of this new phenomenon of magnetic field line switch back with compressed Alfven pulse, how it is generated is raising a hot debate. It is thought that the exchange magnetic reconnection of the solar atmosphere may be the underlying physical mechanism. But in the traditional exchange magnetic reconnection image, after reconnection, the zigzag magnetic field line can easily become smooth, which can not maintain the distortion of the magnetic field line, and may not be able to explain the observed Alfven pulses. In this work, we propose a new model called "Excitation of Alfven Pulses by Continuous Intermittent Interchange Reconnection with Guide Field Discontinuity" (EAP-CIIR-GFD). By analyzing and comparing the simulation results and observation results, we find that the model can explain the following observation features: (1) Alfven disturbance is pulse type and asymmetric; (2) Alfven pulse is compressible with the enhancement of internal temperature and the increase or decrease of the internal density; (3) Alfven pulse can cause serious distortion of the magnetic field line. Improvements to the model will also be discussed in the report.</div>

Abstract:A sizable total-pressure (magnetic pressure plus kinetic pressure) enhancement was found within the high-speed wind stream observed by Helios 2 in 1976 near 0.3 AU. The proton density and temperature and the magnetic magnitude simultaneously increased for about 6 h. This pressure rise was associated with a comparatively large southward now velocity component (with Vz ≈ − 100 km · s−1) and magnetic-field rotation. The pressure enhancement was associated with unusual features in the electron distribution function. It shows a wide angular distribution of electron counting rates in the low-energy (57.8 eV) channel, while previous to the enhancement it exhibits a wide angular distribution of electron count rate in the high-energy (112, 221 and 309 eV) channels, perhaps indicating the mirroring of electrons in the converging field lines of the background magnetic field. These fluid and kinetic phenomena may be explained as resulting from an interplanetary magnetic flux rope which is not fully convected by the flow but moves against the background wind towards the Sun.

Near subsonic solar wind outflow from an active region

Abstract:During Parker Solar Probe (Parker) Encounter 15 (E15), we observe an 18-hour period of near subsonic ($\mathrm{M_S \sim}$ 1) and sub-Alfvénic (SA), $\mathrm{M_A}$ <<< 1, slow speed solar wind from 22 to 15.6 R$_\odot$. As the most extreme SA interval measured to date and skirting the solar wind sonic point, it is the deepest Parker has probed into the formation and acceleration region of the solar wind in the corona. The stream is also measured by Wind and MMS near 1AU at times consistent with ballistic propagation of this slow stream. We investigate the stream source, properties and potential coronal heating consequences via combining these observations with coronal modeling and turbulence analysis. Through source mapping, in situ evidence and multi-point arrival time considerations of a candidate CME, we determine the stream is a steady (non-transient), long-lived and approximately Parker spiral aligned and arises from overexpanded field lines mapping back to an active region. Turbulence analysis of the Elsässer variables shows the inertial range scaling of the $\mathrm{\mathbf{z}^{+}}$ mode ($\mathrm{f \sim ^{-3/2}}$) to be dominated by the slab component. We discuss the spectral flattening and difficulties associated with measuring the $\mathrm{\mathbf{z}^{-}}$ spectra, cautioning against making definitive conclusions from the $\mathrm{\mathbf{z}^{-}}$ mode. Despite being more extreme than prior sub-Alfvénic intervals, its turbulent nature does not appear to be qualitatively different from previously observed streams. We conclude that this extreme low dynamic pressure solar wind interval (which has the potential for extreme space weather conditions) is a large, steady structure spanning at least to 1AU.

Enhanced Anti-Sunward Flow Near Local Noon During a Period of Horizontal IMF and High Solar Wind Velocity V Y

Abstract:It is believed that a southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is mainly responsible for the energy input from solar wind into the magnetosphere. This paper presents an unusual case of strong anti-sunward plasma flow (up to 2 km/s) in the polar cap ionosphere and large cross-polar cap potential (CPCP) during a period of horizontal IMF (| B Z | < 2 nT) observed by both ACE (at the L1 point) and Geotail (on the dusk flank of the magnetosheath). The CPCP is even higher than that under preceding B Z ≈ −23 nT. Furthermore, GOES8 observed that the magnetosheath field turns northward as the anti-sunward plasma flow and CPCP start to increase, which implies that the magnetosheath field interacting with the Earth’s magnetopause has significantly rotated and differs from the IMF observed by ACE and Geotail. In accordance with previous theoretical work, we suggest that the magnetic field line draping produces a southward magnetosheath field and enhances anti-sunward plasma flow and the CPCP.
Density Enhancement Streams in The Solar Wind

Abstract:This letter describes a new phenomenon on the Parker Solar Probe of recurring plasma density enhancements that have $\Delta$n/n ~10% and that occur at a repetition rate of ~5 Hz. They were observed sporadically for about five hours between 14 and 15 solar radii on Parker Solar Probe orbit 12 and they were also seen in the same radial range on both the inbound and outbound orbits 11. Their apparently steady-state existence suggests that their pressure gradient was balanced by the electric field. The EX electric field component produced from this requirement is in good agreement with that measured. This provides strong evidence for the measurement accuracy of the density fluctuations and the X- and Y-components of the electric field (the Z-component was not measured). The electrostatic density waves were accompanied by an electromagnetic low frequency wave which occurred with the electrostatic harmonics. The amplitudes of these electrostatic and electromagnetic waves at $\ge$ 1 Hz were greater than the amplitude of the Alfvenic turbulence in their vicinity so they can be important for the heating, scattering, and acceleration of the plasma. The existence of this pair of waves is consistent with the observed plasma distributions and is explained by a magneto-acoustic wave theory that produces a low frequency electromagnetic wave and electrostatic harmonics.

Observations of the Field-Aligned Residual Flow Inside Magnetic Cloud Structure

Abstract:In this paper, we report two MC events observed by WIND spacecraft with good examples of field-aligned residual flow inside the MC structure. For both events, the co-moving frames are determined through the deHoffman-Teller (HT) analysis and the axial orientations are inferred by the newly developed minimal residue (MR) method. The nature coordinate system for both events are constructed with velocity of the HT frame and the inferred MC axis, the field and flow remaining in the HT frame are analyzed at this coordinate system. As a result, we find that the residual flows in the co-moving HT frame of the two MC events are almost anti-parallel to the helical magnetic field. We speculate that the field-aligned residual flows are large scale coherent hydrodynamic vortices co-moving with the MCs at the supersonic speed near 1 AU. Data analyses show that the event in slow ambient solar wind is expanding at 1 AU and another one in fast solar wind does not show apparent expansion. Proton behaviors for both events are quasi-isothermal. Accelerated HT analysis shows that both events have no suitable HT frame with constant accelerations, which suggests that both events may be moving at the constant speed near 1 AU under the assumptions of the HT analysis. For both events, the ratio of the dynamic pressure to the magnetic pressure is larger than that of the thermal pressure to magnetic pressure, which suggests that the dynamic effects due to the plasma flows remaining in the co-moving HT frame are more important than the thermal effects in the study of MC evolution and propagation.
A Series of Plasma Flow Vortices in the Tail Plasma Sheet Associated with Solar Wind Pressure Enhancement

Abstract:A series of earthward‐moving (∼140 km/s) plasma flow vortices with anticlockwise (when viewed from above the ecliptic plane) rotation was detected in the dawnside tail plasma sheet between 1255 and 1400 UT on 6 July 2003. These flow vortices were observed under the condition of northward interplanetary magnetic field with an enhanced solar wind dynamic pressure. Analysing the plasma and magnetic field data from the Cluster spacecraft and using the Grad‐Shafranov streamline reconstruction technique, we show that the vortex‐like plasma structures have a very similar shape: a Vx component dominant in the dawnside, while a distinct Vy component appears in the duskside, and each structure has a size of about 1.8 × 0.68 RE, approximately in the xy plane of GSM coordinates. It is found that the vortices contain both magnetosphere‐originated hot (N ∼ 0.1 cm−3, E > 3 keV) and magnetosheath‐originated denser and colder (N > 0.2 cm−3, E < 1 keV) populations on the closed field lines. The vortices involve fast earthward flows (Vx > 200 km/s) of mainly sheath‐originated plasmas. We suggest that these observed plasma flow vortices are generated inside the magnetotail during the prolonged and intensified compression of the magnetosphere by the enhanced solar wind dynamic pressure.
Magnetospheric Response to Solar Wind Forcing -ULF Wave - Particle interaction Perspective

Abstract:Sudden changes in solar wind forcing, e.g., those associated with interplanetary shocks and/or solar wind dynamic pressure pulses, can cause many fundamentally important phenomena in the Earth’s magnetosphere including electromagnetic wave generation, plasma heating and energetic particle acceleration. This presentation summarizes our present understanding of the magnetospheric response to solar wind forcing in the aspects of radiation belt electrons, ring current ions and plasmaspheric plasma based on in situ spacecraft measurements, ground-based magnetometer data, MHD and kinetic simulations. Magnetosphere response to sudden changes in solar wind forcing, is not a “one-kick” scenario. It is found that after the impact of solar wind structures on the Earth’s magnetosphere, plasma heating and energetic particle acceleration started nearly immediately and could last for a few hours. Even a small dynamic pressure change associated with an interplanetary shock or a solar wind pressure pulse can play a non-negligible role in magnetospheric physics. The impact leads to different kinds of waves including poloidal mode ULF waves. The fast acceleration of energetic electrons in the radiation belt and energetic ions in the ring current region usually contains two steps: (1) the initial adiabatic acceleration due to the magnetospheric compression; (2) followed by the wave-particle resonant acceleration dominated by global or localized poloidal ULF waves excited at various L-shells. Generalized theory of drift and drift-bounce resonance with growing or decaying ULF waves (globally distributed or localized) has been developed to explain in situ spacecraft observations. The new wave-related observational features like distorted energy spectrum, boomerang and fishbone pitch angle distributions of radiation belt electrons, ring current ions and plasmaspheric plasma can be explained in the frame work of this generalized theory. The results showed in this presentation can be widely used in the interaction of the solar wind with other planets such as Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, and other astrophysical objects with magnetic fields.

Abstract:Reduced daytime upward E×B drifts and weakened fountain effects in equatorial ionosphere have been frequently observed during the initial stage of solar flares. The cause of this phenomenon, however, remains unresolved. The latest state‐of‐art whole geospace model provides an unprecedented opportunity to explore the origin of this response. We show that both prompt penetration electric fields (PPEFs) and internal changes in the wind dynamo process are responsible for the reduced upward ion drifts. Solar‐flare‐induced PPEFs are caused by a reduced high‐latitude potential as a result of flare‐enhanced ionospheric conductances which are distinct from traditional PPEFs that respond to changes in solar wind conditions or magnetosphere dynamics. The neutral wind dynamo source is mainly a reduction in the background low‐latitude eastward electric field. This reduction occurs to maintain current continuity in response to the flare enhancement of low‐latitude Cowling conductance that is relatively greater than the enhancement of the dynamo current source.
