Abstract:Glass is a microscopically disordered, solid form of matter that results when a fluid is cooled or compressed in such a manner that it does not crystallize. Almost all types of materials are capable of glass formation, including polymers, metal alloys and molten salts. Given such diversity, general principles by which different glass-forming materials can be systematically classified are invaluable. One such principle is the classification of glass-formers according to their fragility. Fragility measures the rapidity with which a liquid's properties (such as viscosity) change as the glassy state is approached. Although the relationship between the fragility, configurational entropy and features of the energy landscape (the complicated dependence of energy on configuration) of a glass-former have been analysed previously, a detailed understanding of the origins of fragility is lacking. Here I use simulations to analyse the relationship between fragility and quantitative measures of the energy landscape for a model liquid whose fragility depends on its bulk density. The results reveal that fragility depends on changes in the vibrational properties of individual energy minima in addition to their total number and spread in energy. A thermodynamic expression for fragility is derived, which is in quantitative agreement with kinetic fragilities obtained from the liquid's diffusivity.

Abstract:We present a detailed analysis of correlations between fragility and other parameters of glass-forming systems. The analysis shows the importance of the ratio between the instantaneous bulk and shear modulus of glass-forming systems, or their Poisson ratio, for structural alpha relaxation and fast dynamics. In particular, for simple glass formers, the bulk to shear modulus ratio in the glassy state correlates with fragility in the liquid state and is inversely proportional to the intensity of the boson peak. A simple relationship between the temperature dependence of the viscosity of liquids at high temperatures and near the glass transition is used to rationalize these correlations. We argue that the ratio of the moduli controls the high-temperature activation energy of the structural relaxation and in this way affects the fragility. The ratio also defines the amplitude of the structural relaxation (i.e., the nonergodicity parameter) and the latter influences the strength of the boson peak. These observations might explain the puzzling correlation observed between the fragility and fast dynamics in glass-forming systems.

Abstract:The rapid rise of viscosity or relaxation time upon supercooling is a universal hallmark of glassy liquids. The temperature dependence of viscosity, however, is quite nonuniversal for glassy liquids and is characterized by the system's "fragility," with liquids with nearly Arrhenius temperature-dependent relaxation times referred to as strong liquids and those with super-Arrhenius behavior referred to as fragile liquids. What makes some liquids strong and others fragile is still not well understood. Here, we explore this question in a family of harmonic spheres that range from extremely strong to extremely fragile, using "softness," a structural order parameter identified by machine learning to be highly correlated with dynamical rearrangements. We use a support vector machine to identify softness as the same linear combination of structural quantities across the entire family of liquids studied. We then use softness to identify the factors controlling fragility.

Disentangling interatomic repulsion and anharmonicity in the viscosity and fragility of glasses

Abstract:Within the shoving model of the glass transition, the relaxation time and the viscosity are related to the local cage rigidity. This approach can be extended down to the atomic-level in terms of the interatomic interaction, or potential of mean-force. We applied this approach to both real metallic glass-formers and model Lennard-Jones glasses. The main outcome of this analysis is that in metallic glasses the thermal expansion contribution is mostly independent of composition and is uncorrelated with the interatomic repulsion: as a consequence, the fragility increases upon increasing the interatomic repulsion steepness. In the Lennard-Jones glasses, the scenario is opposite: thermal expansion and interatomic repulsion contributions are strongly correlated, and the fragility decreases upon increasing the repulsion steepness. This framework allows one to tell apart systems where "soft atoms make strong glasses" from those where, instead, "soft atoms make fragile glasses". Hence, it opens up the way for the rational, atomistic tuning of the fragility and viscosity of widely different glass-forming materials all the way from strong to fragile.

Why Is the Range of Timescale So Wide in Glass-Forming Liquid?

Abstract:The viscosity and the relaxation time of a glass-forming liquid vary over 15 orders of magnitude before the liquid freezes into a glass. The rate of the change with temperature is characterized by liquid fragility. The mechanism of such a spectacular behavior and the origin of fragility have long been discussed, but it remains unresolved because of the difficulty of carrying out experiments and constructing theories that bridge over a wide timescale from atomic (ps) to bulk (minutes). Through the x-ray diffraction measurement and molecular dynamics simulation for metallic liquids we suggest that large changes in viscosity can be caused by relatively small changes in the structural coherence which characterizes the medium-range order. Here the structural coherence does not imply that of atomic-scale structure, but it relates to the coarse-grained density fluctuations represented by the peaks in the pair-distribution function (PDF) beyond the nearest neighbors. The coherence length is related to fragility and increases with decreasing temperature, and it diverges only at a negative temperature. This analysis is compared with several current theories which predict a phase transition near the glass transition temperature.

Abstract:Experimental determinations of the glass transition and related properties in alloys are reviewed. Several recent measurements of viscosity, specific volume and heat capacity in the undercooling regime have become possible after the discovery of bulk glass forming alloys. The data allow verification of models on the kinetics and thermodynamics of such melts. The notion of melt fragility, borrowed from the description of inorganic and molecular glasses, has become popular also for metallic alloys: the kinetic fragility is described by the viscous behavior of the liquid and the thermodynamic fragility by the entropy loss on undercooling. The experimental viscosity data for metallic glass formers presently available can be reasonably framed within the strong–fragile classification. On the other hand, there are major discrepancies for the thermodynamic fragility of metallic glass formers with respect to conventional ones. The reason for such disagreement is twofold: on the experimental ground there are difficulties in obtaining fully reliable thermodynamic data in sufficiently wide temperature ranges; on the conceptual side the definition of the configurational entropy of the liquid with a suitable reference state is controversial. Among fragility indexes, the reduced width of the transition range proves most useful. The trend of the glass transition as a function of composition is also discussed in relation to the progressive ordering of the liquid on undercooling.

Abstract:Understanding the microscopic mechanism of the transition of glass remains one of the most challenging topics in Condensed Matter Physics. What controls the sharp slowing down of molecular motion upon approaching the glass transition temperature Tg, whether there is an underlying thermodynamic transition at some finite temperature below Tg, what the role of cooperativity and heterogeneity are, and many other questions continue to be topics of active discussions. This review focuses on the mechanisms that control the steepness of the temperature dependence of structural relaxation (fragility) in glass-forming liquids. We present a brief overview of the basic theoretical models and their experimental tests, analyzing their predictions for fragility and emphasizing the successes and failures of the models. Special attention is focused on the connection of fast dynamics on picosecond time scales to the behavior of structural relaxation on much longer time scales. A separate section discusses the specific case of polymeric glass-forming liquids, which usually have extremely high fragility. We emphasize the apparent difference between the glass transitions in polymers and small molecules. We also discuss the possible role of quantum effects in the glass transition of light molecules and highlight the recent discovery of the unusually low fragility of water. At the end, we formulate the major challenges and questions remaining in this field.

Abstract:We perform kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of a distinguishable-particle lattice model of structural glasses with random particle interactions. By varying the interaction distribution and the average particle hopping energy barrier, we obtain an extraordinarily wide range of kinetic fragility. A stretching exponent, characterizing structural relaxation, is found to decrease with the kinetic fragility in agreement with experiments. The most fragile glasses are those exhibiting low hopping barriers and, more importantly, dramatic drops of entropies upon cooling toward the glass transition temperatures. The entropy drops reduce possible kinetic pathways and lead to dramatic slowdowns in the dynamics. In addition, the kinetic fragility is shown to correlate with a thermodynamic fragility.

Abstract:Strong changes in bulk properties, such as modulus and viscosity, are observed near the glass transition temperature, Tg, of amorphous materials. For more than a century, intense efforts have been made to define a microscopic origin for these macroscopic changes in properties. Using transition state theory (TST), we delve into the atomic/molecular level picture of how microscopic localized unit relaxations, or "cage rattles," evolve to macroscopic structural relaxations above Tg. Unit motion is broken down into two populations: (1) simultaneous rearrangement occurs among a critical number of units, nα, which ranges from 1 to 4, allowing a systematic classification of glass formers, GFs, that is compared to fragility; and (2) near Tg, adjacent units provide additional free volume for rearrangement, not simultaneously, but within the "primitive" lifetime, τ1, of one unit rattling in its cage. Relaxation maps illustrate how Johari-Goldstein β-relaxations stem from the rattle of nα units. We analyzed a wide variety of glassy materials and materials with a glassy response using literature data. Our four-parameter equation fits "strong" and "weak" GFs over the entire range of temperatures and also extends to other glassy systems, such as ion-transporting polymers and ferroelectric relaxors. The role of activation entropy in boosting preexponential factors to high "unphysical" apparent frequencies is discussed. Enthalpy-entropy compensation is clearly illustrated using the TST approach.
Insights into glass formation and glass transition in supercooled liquids, by study of related phenomena in crystals

Abstract:We divide glass and viscous liquid sciences into two major research areas, the first dealing with how to avoid crystals and so access the viscous liquid state, and the second dealing with how liquids behave when no crystals form. We review some current efforts to elucidate each area, looking at strategies for vitrification of monatomic metals in the first, and the origin of the property fragility in the second. Essential here is the non- trivial behavior of the glassformer thermodynamics. We explore the findings on nonexponential relaxationand dynamic heterogeneities in viscous liquids, emphasizing the way in which direct excitation of the configurational modes has helped differentiate configurational from nonconfigurational contributions to the excess heat capacity. We then propose a scheme for understanding the relation between inorganic network and non-network glassformers which includes the anomalous case of water as an intermediate. In a final section we examine the additional insights to be gained by study of the ergodicity-breaking, glass-like, transitions that occur in disordering crystals. Here we highlight systems in which the background thermodynamics is understood because the ergodic behavior is a lambda transition. Water and the classical network glassformers appear to be attenuated versions of these.

Glass Transitions and Critical Points in Orientationally Disordered Crystals and Structural Glassformers: "Strong" Liquids are More Interesting Than We Thought

Abstract:When liquids are classified using Tg -scaled Arrhenius plots of relaxation times (or relative rates of entropy increase above Tg) across a "strong-fragile" spectrum of behaviors, the "strong" liquids have always appeared rather uninteresting [1, 2]. Here we use updated plots of the same type for crystal phases of the "rotator" variety [3] to confirm that the same pattern of behavior exists for these simpler (center of mass ordered) systems. However, in this case we can show that the "strong" systems owe their behavior to the existence of lambda-type order-disorder transitions at higher temperatures (directly observable in the cases where observations are not interrupted by prior melting). Furthermore, the same observation can be made for other systems in which the glass transition, at which the ordering is arrested, occurs in the thermodynamic ground state of the system. This prompts an enquiry into the behavior of strong liquids at high temperatures. Using the case of silica itself, we again find strong evidence from extended ion dynamics simulations, for a lambda transition at high temperatures, but only if pressure is adjusted to a critical value. In this case the lambda point is identifiable as a liquid-liquid critical point of the type suggested for supercooled water. We recognize the possibility of exploring, a postiori, the consequences of rapid cooling of laboratory liquid SiO2 from >5000K and multi-GPa pressures, using the phenomenology of damage-induced plasmas in optical fibers. The ramifications of these considerations will be explored to establish a "big picture"2 of the relation of thermodynamic transitions to supercooled liquid phenomenology [4, 5].

Abstract:Abstract Fragility, quantifying the rapidity of variation of relaxation times, is analysed for a series of model glass formers, which differ in the softness of their interparticle interactions. In an attempt to rationalize experimental observations in colloidal suspensions that softer interactions lead to stronger (less fragile) glass formers, we study the variation of relaxation dynamics with density, rather than temperature, as a control parameter. We employ density-temperature scaling, analyzed in recent studies, to address the question. We find that while employing inverse density in place of temperature leads to the conclusion that softer interactions lead to stronger behaviour, the use of scaled variables involving temperature and density lead to the opposite conclusion, similarly to earlier investigations where temperature variation of relaxation dynamics was analysed for the same systems. We rationalize our results by considering the Adam-Gibbs (AG) fragility, which incorporates the density dependence of the configurational entropy and an activation energy that may arise from other properties of a glass former. Within the framework of the Adam-Gibbs relation, by employing density temperature scaling for the analysis, we find that softer particles make more fragile glasses, as deduced from dynamical quantities, which is found to be consistent with the Adam-Gibbs fragility.Graphical abstract We analyse fragility, which quantifies the rapidity of variation of relaxation times, using density as the control variable, for model glass formers with varying softness of interactions. Using scaled variables, we find – and rationalise thermodynamically by computing configurational entropy – that fragility increases with softness, contrary to previous work.

Abstract:This review deals with the kinetic and thermodynamic fragility of bulk metallic glass forming liquids. The experimental methods to determine the kinetic fragility, relaxation behavior and thermodynamic functions of undercooled metallic liquids are introduced. Existing data are assessed and discussed using the Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann equation and in the frameworks of the Adam-Gibbs as well as the Cohen-Turnbull free volume approach. In contrast to pure metals and most non glass forming alloys, bulk glass formers are moderately strong liquids. In general the fragility parameter $D^{*} $ increases with the complexity of the alloy with differences between the alloy families, e.g. noble-metal based alloys being more fragile than Zr-based alloys. At least some bulk metallic glass forming liquids, such as Vitreloy 1, undergo transitions from a fragile state at high temperatures to a strong state at low temperatures with indications that in Zr-based alloys this behavior is a common phenomenon.
A real-space description of the glass transition based on heterogeneities and entropy barriers

Abstract:An alternative scenario for the glass transition based on the cooperative nature of nucleation processes and the role of entropic effects is presented. The new ingredient is to relate the dissipation during the relaxation process to the release of strain energy driven by the nucleation of progressively larger cooperative spatial regions. Using an equiprobability hypothesis for the transition between different metastable configurations, we obtain a relation between the free energy dissipation rate and the size of the largest cooperative regions. Th is leads to a new phenomenological relation between the largest relaxation time in the supercooled liquid phase and the effective temperature. This differs from the classical Adam-Gibbs relation in that predicts no divergence of the primary relaxation time at the Kauzmann temperature but a crossover from fragile to strong behavior.

Abstract:An undercooled liquid is unstable. The driving force of the glass transition at Tg is a change of the undercooled-liquid Gibbs free energy. The classical Gibbs free energy change for a crystal formation is completed including an enthalpy saving. The crystal growth critical nucleus is used as a probe to observe the Laplace pressure change Dp accompanying the enthalpy change -Vm *Dp at Tg where Vm is the molar volume. A stable glass-liquid transition model predicts the specific heat jump of fragile liquids at temperatures smaller than Tg, the Kauzmann temperature TK where the liquid entropy excess with regard to crystal goes to zero, the equilibrium enthalpy between TK and Tg, the maximum nucleation rate at TK of superclusters containing magic atom numbers, and the equilibrium latent heats at Tg and TK. Strong-to-fragile and strong-to-strong liquid transitions at Tg are also described and all their thermodynamic parameters are determined from their specific heat jumps. The existence of fragile liquids quenched in the amorphous state, which do not undergo liquid-liquid transition during heating preceding their crystallization, is predicted. Long ageing times leading to the formation at TK of a stable glass composed of superclusters containing up to 147 atoms, touching and interpenetrating, are evaluated from nucleation rates. A fragile-to-fragile liquid transition occurs at Tg without stable-glass formation while a strong glass is stable after transition.

Abstract:We propose a scenario for the glass transition based on the cooperative nature of nucleation processes and entropic effects. Does the repulsive interatomic potential determine fragility in metallic liquids?

Abstract:The dynamical behavior of liquids is frequently characterized by the fragility, which can be defined from the temperature dependence of the shear viscosity, {\eta}. For a strong liquid, the activation energy for {\eta} changes little with cooling towards the glass transition temperature, Tg. The change is much greater in fragile liquids, with the activation energy becoming very large near Tg. While fragility is widely recognized as an important concept, for example believed to play an important role in glass formation, the microscopic origin of fragility is poorly understood. Here, we present new experimental evidence showing that fragility reflects the strength of the repulsive part of the interatomic potential, which can be determined from the steepness of the pair distribution function near the hard-sphere cutoff. Based on an analysis of scattering data from ten different metallic alloy liquids, we show that stronger liquids have steeper repulsive potentials.

Abstract:The thermal expansion coefficients, structure factors, and viscosities of twenty-five equilibrium and supercooled metallic liquids have been measured using an electrostatic levitation (ESL) facility. The structure factor was measured at the Advanced Photon Source, Argonne, using the ESL. A clear connection between liquid fragility and structural and volumetric changes at high temperatures is established; the observed changes are larger for the more fragile liquids. It is also demonstrated that the fragility of metallic liquids is determined to a large extent by the cohesive energy and is, therefore, predictable. These results are expected to provide useful guidance in the future design of metallic glasses.

Abstract:AbstractDespite decades of studies on the grand problem of the glass transition the question of well-defined universal patterns, including the key problem of the previtreous behavior of the primary (structural) relaxation time, remains elusive. This report shows the universal previtreous behavior of the apparent fragility, i.e. the steepness index mP (T > Tg) = d log10τ(T)/d( Tg/T). It is evidenced that mP(T) = 1(T − T*), for T → Tg and T*= Tg − Δ T*. Basing on this finding, the new 3-parameter dependence for portraying the previtreous behavior of the primary relaxation time has been derived: τ(T) = CΩ((T − T*)/T)−Ω × [exp((T − T*)/T)]Ω. The universality of obtained relations is evidenced for glass formers belonging to low molecular weight liquids, polymers (melt and solid), plastic crystals, liquid crystals, resins and relaxors. They exhibit clear preferences either for the VFT or for the critical-like descriptions, if recalled already used modeling. The novel relation can obey even above the dynamic crossover temperature, with the power exponent Ω ranging between ~17 (liquid crystals) to ~57 (glycerol), what may indicate the impact of symmetry on the previtreous effect. Finally, the emerging similarity to the behavior in the isotropic phase of nematic liquid crystals is recalled.
