Abstract:The generalized spectral domain-exponential matrix technique was used to study the reflection and transmission properties of multilayered uniaxial chiral composite that possess bi-chirality structures. Numerical results were presented to demonstrate the influences of the orientation axis, loss, chirality, and non-reciprocity parameters on the reflection and transmission coefficients. Especially, the effect of cross-polarized transformation was considered. The results show that the bianisotropic uniaxial chiral materials have potential applications for the design of novel polarization transformers.
Surface-Doped Quasi-2D Chiral Organic Single Crystals for Chiroptical Sensing

Abstract:Chiral organic optoelectronics using circularly polarized light (CPL) as the key element in the photonic signal has recently emerged as a next-generation photonic technology. However, it remains challenging to simultaneously achieve high polarization selectivity and superior optoelectronic performance. Supramolecular two-dimensional (2D) chiral organic single crystals may be, good candidates for this purpose due to their defect-free nature, molecular diversity, and morphologies. Here, quasi-2D single crystals of chiral perylene diimides with parallelogram and triangle/hexagon morphologies have been selectively fabricated via self-assembly using different cosolvent systems. These materials exhibit amplified circular dichroism (CD) spectral signals, due to their molecular packing modes and supramolecular chirality. Through molecular surface n-doping using hydrazine, chiral single crystals exhibit electron mobility surpassing 1.0 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), which is one of the highest among chiral organic semiconductors, and excellent optoelectronic functions. Theoretical calculations reveal that the radical anions formed by n-doping increase the electron affinity and/or reduce the energy gap, thus facilitating electron transport. More importantly, the doped organic chiral crystals selectively discriminate CPL handedness with a high anisotropy factor of photoresponsivity (similar to 0.12). These results demonstrate that surface-doped quasi-2D chiral organic single crystals are highly promising for chiral optoelectronics.

Abstract:We theoretically investigated a format of two-dimensional dielectric-chiral photonic crystal structure that is composed of a dispersive chiral medium embedded in a dielectric background. The photonic band structure shows distinctive dispersion relationship for circularly polarized electromagnetic waves, leading to a number of intriguing wave properties, namely chirality dependent “node switching,” polarization sensitive transmission and handedness dependent mode localization. All of these effects are attributed to the strong interaction between the local resonant modes around the dispersive chiral rods and the Bloch modes of the bulk waves. The chirality dependent properties can find tremendous applications in polarization based optoelectronics devices and rapid separation of chiral compounds in pharmaceutical industry.
Deciphering the Electronic and Structural Origin of Chiroptical Activity of Chiral 2D Perovskites

Abstract:Understanding the structure-chiroptical activity relationship in chiral perovskites is of great significance as it provides a pathway to control light-matter interactions. Although many reports have shown various chiral structures with distinctive chiroptical responses, a clear structure-property relationship is still missing, partially stemming from the poor understanding of the optical activity mechanism. For instance, it remains unclear if and how the chiroptical activity is related with the exciton spin splitting. Herein, we used magnetic circular dichroism to probe the exciton spin splitting of a series of chiral 2D perovskites. Our results show that the anisotropy factor of circular dichroism is indeed proportional to the exciton spin splitting energy, with larger splitting energy giving larger anisotropy factors. Further structural analysis showed that the splitting energy is closely correlated with both the in-plane and out-of-plane distortion structural parameters of the inorganic lattice. Our work provides an important mechanistic understanding of chiroptical activity and establishes the structure-property relationship for 2D chiral perovskites.

Multidiscipline Modeling in Materials and Structures

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate a novel chiral photonic crystal with thin thickness and small unit cells via numerical calculations. The multi-band circular dichroism is found in a wide frequency range from 400 to 600 THz by studying the transmission properties. Design/methodology/approach To investigate this chiral photonic structure, refection coefficients are analytically computed using finite element method. Numerical results are given, and physical properties are discussed, including the optical rotation, the circular dichroism and the absorption. Findings The results of this modeling and simulation under COMSOL multiphysics environment have led the authors to study the scattered parameters such as the coefficient of transmission (S21) and the coefficient of reflection (S11) for a 2D CPC nanostructure. The authors have also developed script under the Matlab environment which studies absorption and circular dichroism and ensure the existence of optical activity. According to the obtained results, the coefficient of transmission is proportional to the parameter of chirality. Originality/value The authors have designed a novel chiral photonic structure that exhibits larger circular dichroism. The CD spectrum has typically both positive and negative bands. The design principles defined in this work, which combine the concepts of the photonic crystal with the chiral structure (optical activity, circular dichroism and absorption), represent a model for simulation of the properties of a more complex chiral photonic structure. These results led to realization of novel circularly polarized devices in nanotechnologies.

Abstract:Chirality has been considered as one of the key factors in the evolution of life in nature. It is important to uncover how chiral potentials of molecular systems play vital role in fundamental photochemical processes. Here, we investigate the role of chirality in photoinduced energy transfer in a model dimeric system, where the monomers are excitonically coupled. To observe transient chiral dynamics and energy transfer, we employ circularly polarized laser pulses in two-dimensional electronic spectroscopy to construct the two-dimensional circular dichroism (2DCD) spectral maps. Tracking time-resolved peak magnitudes in 2DCD spectra allows one to identify chirality induced population dynamics. The dynamics of energy transfer is revealed by the time-resolved kinetics of cross peaks. However, the differential signal of 2DCD spectra shows the magnitude of cross peaks is dramatically reduced at initial waiting time, which indicates the weak chiral interactions between two monomers. The downhill energy transfer is resolved by presenting a strong magnitude of cross peak in 2DCD spectra after long waiting time. The chiral contribution towards coherent and incoherent energy-transfer pathways in the model dimer system is further examined via control of excitonic couplings between two monomers. Applications are made to study the energy-transfer process in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson complex. Our work uncovers the potential of 2DCD spectroscopy to resolve the chiral-induced interactions and population transfers in excitonically coupled systems.
Optical Properties of Chiral Three-Dimensional Photonic Crystals made from Semiconductors

Abstract:We perform a theoretical and numerical study of the optical properties of both direct and inverse three-dimensional (3D) chiral woodpile structures, and a corresponding chiral Bragg stack. We compute transmission spectra in the helical direction for finite crystals, and photonic band structures, where we ensure the effective index of all structures to be the same. We find that both 3D structures show dual-band circular dichroism, where light with a particular circular polarization state - either left- or right-handed - reveals a broad stop band with major attenuation, whereas the other polarization state is transmitted nearly unimpeded. We observe such gaps in different frequency ranges, with alternating handedness. The appearance of the circular-polarized gaps is successfully interpreted with a physical model wherein the circular polarization either co-rotates or counter-rotates with the chiral structure, thereby effectively leading to a spatially-dependent or a constant refractive index, and thus to the presence or absence of a gap. We find that the presence or absence of circularly polarized gaps is tuned by the transverse periods perpendicular to the chiral axis in both the 3D direct and inverse chiral woodpile crystal structures. The tunability of circular dichroism may find applications as on-chip sensors for circularly polarized light and in the on-chip detection of chiral molecules.

Abstract:Chiral oligomers in optics are photonic metamaterials inspired by the concept of chiral centers in chemistry. In recent years, chiral oligomers have attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their simple construction and unique chiroptical response. To date, research has predominantly focused on the photonic spin angular momentum (SAM)-dependent chiroptical response: circular dichroism (CD). However, for another photonic dimension parallel to the SAM, orbital angular momentum (OAM)-dominated chiroptical response of chiral oligomers still remains elusive. Here, we theoretically and experimentally demonstrate the individual three-dimensional (3D) chiral tetramers can exhibit a gigantic response to the photonic OAM with a maximum helical dichroism (HD) of ∼23%. Meanwhile, we also reveal the origin of the HD via simulation analysis of electric current distribution, reflected electric field, and the discrete OAM spectroscopy. Furthermore, by femtosecond direct laser writing, 3D oligomers with tailoring geometric parameters can be flexibly fabricated in one step for varying HD responses. Our research fills the gap of OAM-related chiroptical response of chiral oligomers, which has great implications for chiroptical spectroscopy and photonic angular momentum engineering.

Abstract:Research into 2D materials has been growing with impressive speed since the discovery of graphene. Such layered materials with ultrathin morphologies and extreme aspect ratios currently display a vast range of properties; however, until recently a conspicuously missing property of 2D materials was global chirality. The situation has changed over the past few years with the implementation of several distinct types of ultrathin chiral 2D crystals. Here we offer a forward-looking perspective on this field to comprehend the fundamentals of global chirality in two dimensions and develop new directions. We specifically discuss the experimental achievements of the emerging chiral 2D materials with a focus on their design strategy, synthesis, structural characterization, fundamental physical properties and possible applications. We will highlight how the molecular-scale local chirality could be significantly transmitted and amplified throughout ultrathin single-crystalline 2D structures, resulting in distinctive global chirality that brings more sophisticated functions.

Abstract:Structural chirality, defined as the lack of mirror symmetry in materials' atomic structure, is only meaningful in three-dimensional space. Yet two-dimensional (2D) materials, despite their small thickness, can show chirality that enables prominent asymmetric optical, electrical and magnetic properties. In this Perspective, we first discuss the possible definition and mathematical description of '2D chiral materials', and the intriguing physics enabled by structural chirality in van der Waals 2D homobilayers and heterostructures, such as circular dichroism, chiral plasmons and the nonlinear Hall effect. We then summarize the recent experimental progress and approaches to induce and control structural chirality in 2D materials from monolayers to superlattices. Finally, we postulate a few unique opportunities offered by 2D chiral materials, the synthesis and new properties of which can potentially lead to chiral optoelectronic devices and possibly materials for enantioselective photochemistry.

Unraveling the amplified chiroptical responses of rylene-bladed quintuple [6]helicenes

Abstract:Unraveling the key structural features to maximize the chiroptical properties is of significance for developing high-performance chiral materials. Here we present our first attempt to elucidate and understand the molecular design of excellent chiroptical properties via the combination of multiplicity and the alignment of subhelicenes. Two stereoisomeric PDI-bladed quintuple [6]helicenes, namely D 5 -CRP and C 2 -CRP , were revealed to show distinct spatial arrangements of subhelicenes. Circular dichroism (CD) spectra showed that the Cotton effects (Δ ε ) are reaching 1,412 mol −1 L cm −1 for D 5 -CRP and 669 mol −1 L cm −1 for C 2 -CRP in the visible spectrum. The greatly amplified Δ ε relative to the smaller analogue NPDH arises from the circular annulation of helicenes and high molecular symmetry that could significantly regulate the transition dipole moments and thereby make them tend to be (anti)parallel, as supported by TDDFT calculations for the rotatory strength ( R ). Consequently, the maximal dissymmetry factors (| g abs | and | g lum |) of this kind of chiral molecular carbon imides were estimated to be up to 0.021 and 0.012, respectively. This study provides a deep insight into the chiroptical properties of complicated chiral systems.
A New Chiral Phenomenon of Orientational Chirality, Its Synthetic Control and Computational Study.

Abstract:A new type of chirality, orientational chirality, consisting of a tetrahedron center and a remotely anchored blocker, has been discovered. The key structural element of this chirality is characterized by multiple orientations directed by a through-space functional group. The multi-step synthesis of orientational chiral targets was conducted by taking advantage of asymmetric nucleophilic addition, Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling and Sonogashira coupling. An unprecedented catalytic species showing a five-membered ring consisting of C (sp2)-Br-Pd-C (sp2) bonds was isolated during performing Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the species structure and absolute configuration of chiral orientation products. Based on X-ray structures, a model was proposed for the new chirality phenomenon to differentiate the present molecular framework from previous others. DFT computational study presented the relative stability of individual orientatiomers. This discovery would be anticipated to result in a new stereochemistry branch and to have a broad impact on chemical, biomedical, and material sciences in the future.
Optical activity of chiral excitons

Abstract:Recent activity in the area of chiroptical phenomena has been focused on the connection between structural asymmetry, electron spin configuration and light matter interactions in chiral semiconductors. In these systems, spin-splitting phenomena emerge due to inversion symmetry breaking and the presence of extended electronic states, yet the connection to chiroptical phenomena is lacking. Here, we develop an analytical effective mass model of chiral excitons, parameterized by density functional theory. The model accounts for parity mixing of the band edge Bloch functions resulting from polar distortions, resulting in magnetic dipole allowed transitions. Through the study of a prototypical chiral 2D hybrid perovskite semiconductor, we show that circular dichroism of the chiral exciton and its interband continuum emerges from spin-splitting via cross coupling of Rashba-like and chiral/helical spin-texture components. As a counterpoint, we apply our model to describe chiroptical properties of excitons in perovskite nanocrystals that occur without chiral lattice distortions.

Abstract:Chirality prevails in nature and is of great value for molecular biology, medicine, and bioscience. Due to the enhancement of chiroptical responses, chiral metasurfaces has attracted enormous attentions. In this paper, some novel polarization-sensitive transmission effects in terahertz chiral metasurfaces are exhibited. In the chiral metasurfaces whose unit cell consists of two basic resonators – a wire and a split ring resonator (SRR), we observe the asymmetrical transmission for circularly polarized state from the circular cross-polarization conversion spectra and the circular conversion dichroism (CCD). More importantly, we verify that the chiroptical activities can be affected by the coupling between the two resonators by simply moving their relative position in the terahertz metasurfaces. From the experimental and simulated results, we observe the distinguished variation in the circular cross-polarization conversion spectra and CCD, and combining with the theoretical analysis using coupled mode theory, we reveal that the chirality of the metasurfaces is strongly correlated to the coupling between the two modes determined by the wire and SRR. Finally, we demonstrate the coupling-enabled chirality by investigating the dependence of CCD on the coupling discrepancy with different relative positions of the two resonators. These findings offer the insights into the relationship between chirality and mode coupling and provide a theoretical method to design chiral metasurfaces and enhance the circular conversion dichroism, which have potential applications in the fields such as optical sensing, polarization imaging, and biological/chemical detection.

Chiroptical Inversion Induced by Rotation of a Carbon-Carbon Single Bond: an Experimental and Theoretical Study.

Abstract:We propose a new strategy to construct chiral molecular switches with highly reversible and sensitive chiroptical responses to variations in the external environment. Its fundamental concept involves a stimuli-triggered exchange of two conformations presenting significantly different chiroptical properties through the rotation of a carbon-carbon single bond, as demonstrated by chiral Schiff bases s-1, s-2, and a salicylamide analogue s-3. Upon addition of base in solution, the circular dichroism (CD) spectra of these molecular switches displayed unique changes featuring an inversion of the Cotton effect's signs, and the original CD profiles can be recoverd by acidification. Various spectroscopic studies as well as the conformational analysis combining with TDDFT computations allowed clear elucidation of the chiroptical inversion mechanism. It is expected that this kind of chiroptical switches is of great interest for molecular recognition, chemosensing, and the construction of molecular-scale devices. Furthermore, the present study indicates that the use of the conformational transition about a single bond may serve as the basis for designing chiroptical inversion systems.
Giant chiroptical effect caused by the electric quadrupole

Abstract:Recently, there is a great interest in studying ultrasensitive detection and characterization of biomolecules using plasmonic particles, because they are of considerable importance in biomedical science and pharmaceutics. So far, all the theories on plasmoninduced circular dichroism (CD) are based on the dipole approximation, the electric quadrupolar contribution is generally considered to be relatively small and neglected. Here we demonstrate that the electric quadrupolar contribution not only cannot be ignored, but also plays a key role in many cases. Particularly, for the chiral medium that possesses preferential molecular orientations and is located at the hotspot of plasmonic nanostructures, the plasmonic CD strength contributed by molecular electric quadrupoles (EQ) can be two orders of magnitude higher than that contributed by molecular electric/magnetic dipoles. Unlike the case of dipole approximation, molecular EQ associated plasmonic CD activity appears mainly at the plasmonic resonance absorptions that facilitate the optically enhanced near-field with steep electric filed gradients, and is correlated with the boosted emission rate of a molecular EQ. Based on such physical understandings, we can design nanostructures to realize giant chiroptical effect using the EQ contribution according to the requirements,2 which provide a new strategy for ultrasensitive detection and quantification of molecular chirality.

Competition of Chiroptical Effect Caused by Nanostructure and Chiral Molecules

Abstract:The theory to calculate circular dichroism (CD) of chiral molecules in a finite cluster with arbitrarily disposed objects has been developed by means of T-matrix method. The interactions between chiral molecules and nanostructures have been investigated. Our studies focus on the case of chiral molecules inserted into plasmonic hot spots of nanostructures. Our results show that the total CD of the system with two chiral molecules is not sum for two cases when two chiral molecules inserted respectively into the hot spots of nanoparticle clusters as the distances among nanoparticles are small, although the relationship is established at the case of large interparticle distances. The plasmonic CD arising from structure chirality of nanocomposites depends strongly on the relative positions and orientations of nanospheroids, and are much greater than that from molecule-induced chirality. However, the molecule-induced plasmonic CD effect from the molecule-NP nanocomposites with special chiral structures can be spectrally distinguishable from the structure chirality-based optical activity. Our results provide a new theoretical framework for understanding the two different aspects of plasmonic CD effect in molecule-NP nanocomposites, which would be helpful for the experimental design of novel biosensors to realize ultrasensitive probe of chiral information of molecules by plasmon-based nanotechnology.

Controllable Double-Helical Microstructures by Photonic Orbital Angular Momentum for Chiroptical Response

Abstract:Three-dimensional helical microstructures are abundant in nature and can be applied as chiral metamaterials for advanced nanophotonics. Here we report a flexible method to fabricate double-helical microstructures with single exposure by recording the chirality of incident optical vortices. Two coaxial optical vortices can interfere to generate a helical optical field, confirmed by the numerical simulation. The diameters of double-helical microstructures can be tailored by the magnitude of topological charges. This fast manufacturing strategy provides the opportunity to efficiently yield helical microstructures. Finally, the chirality of double-helical microstructures can be reversibly read by optical vortices, demonstrating a strong chiroptical response.
Gigantic Vortical Differential Scattering As a Monochromatic Probe for Multiscale Chiral Structures.

Abstract:Significance Optical chirality by light–matter interaction is a powerful strategy for discriminating the chirality of materials in modern physics. Here we present a vortex-dependent approach to yield a direct chiroptical response with monochromatic light. The chiroptical signal of ∼120% is obtained on intrinsically chiral microstructures by optical vortices in the visible range. The chiroptical properties of microstructures can be flexibly controlled by tuning their geometric features. We further demonstrate the strong chiral light–matter interaction by optical vortices for sensitively detecting optical chirality of molecules. Spin angular momentum of light is vital to investigate enantiomers characterized by circular dichroism (CD), widely adopted in biology, chemistry, and material science. However, to discriminate chiral materials with multiscale features, CD spectroscopy normally requires wavelength-swept laser sources as well as wavelength-specific optical accessories. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an orbital-angular-momentum-assisted approach to yield chiroptical signals with monochromatic light. The gigantic vortical differential scattering (VDS) of ∼120% is achieved on intrinsically chiral microstructures fabricated by femtosecond laser. The VDS measurements can robustly generate chiroptical properties on microstructures with varying geometric features (e.g., diameters and helical pitches) and detect chiral molecules with high sensitivity. This VDS scheme lays a paradigm-shift pavement toward efficiently chiroptical discrimination of multiscale chiral structures with photonic orbital angular momentum. It simplifies and complements the conventional CD spectroscopy, opening possibilities for measuring weak optical chirality, especially on mesoscale chiral architectures and macromolecules.
