Abstract:In this paper I present a counter-example to the conjecture: The Fiedler vector for the graph Laplacian of a tree has its most extreme values at the verticies which are the farthest apart. This counter-example looks roughly like a flower and so I have named it the "Fiedler rose".

Abstract:In this paper we investigate some properties of the Fiedler vector, the so-called first non-trivial eigenvector of the Laplacian matrix of a graph. There are important results about the Fiedler vector to identify spectral cuts in graphs but far less is known about its extreme values and points. We propose a few results and conjectures in this direction. We also bring two concrete contributions, i) by defining a new measure for graphs that can be interpreted in terms of extremality (inverse of centrality), ii) by applying a small perturbation to the Fiedler vector of cerebral shapes such as the corpus callosum to robustify their parameterization.

Abstract:Given a graph and one of its weighted Laplacian matrix, a Fiedler vector is an eigenvector with respect to the second smallest eigenvalue. The Fiedler vectors have been used widely for graph partitioning, graph drawing, spectral clustering, and finding the characteristic set. This paper studies how the graph structure can control the possible Fiedler vectors for different weighted Laplacian matrices. For a given tree, we characterize all possible Fiedler vectors among its weighted Laplacian matrix. As an application, the characteristic set can be anywhere on a tree, except for the set containing a single leaf. For a given cycle, we characterize all possible eigenvectors corresponding to the second or the third smallest eigenvalue.

Abstract:In spectral bisection, a Fielder vector is used for partitioning a graph into two connected subgraphs according to its sign pattern. In this article, we investigate graphs having Fiedler vectors with unbalanced sign patterns such that a partition can result in two connected subgraphs that are distinctly different in size. We present a characterization of graphs having a Fiedler vector with exactly one negative component, and discuss some classes of such graphs. We also establish an analogous result for regular graphs with a Fiedler vector with exactly two negative components. In particular, we examine the circumstances under which any Fiedler vector has unbalanced sign pattern according to the number of vertices with minimum degree.

Abstract:Let F=∪i=1kSdi be the union of pairwise vertex-disjoint k stars of order d1+1,…,dk+1, respectively, where k≥2 and d1≥⋯≥dk≥1. In this paper, we present two sharp upper bounds for the spectral radius of F-free (bipartite) graphs and characterize all corresponding extremal graphs. Moreover, the minimum least eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of an F-free graph and all extremal graphs are obtained.
On the $f$-vectors of flow polytopes for the complete graph

Abstract:The Chan-Robbins-Yuen polytope ($CRY_n$) of order $n$ is a face of the Birkhoff polytope of doubly stochastic matrices that is also a flow polytope of the directed complete graph $K_{n+1}$ with netflow $(1,0,0, \ldots , 0, -1)$. The volume and lattice points of this polytope have been actively studied, however its face structure has received less attention. We give generating functions and explicit formulas for computing the $f$-vector by using Hille's (2003) result bijecting faces of a flow polytope to certain graphs, as well as Andresen-Kjeldsen's (1976) result that enumerates certain subgraphs of the directed complete graph. We extend our results to flow polytopes of the complete graph having arbitrary (non-negative) netflow vectors and recover the $f$-vector of the Tesler polytope of Mészáros--Morales--Rhoades (2017).

Abstract:Fiedler value, as the minimal real part of (or the minimal) nonzero Laplacian eigenvalue, garners significant attention as a metric for evaluating network topology and its dynamics. In this paper, we address the quantification relation between Fiedler value and each edge in a directed complex network, considering undirected networks as a special case. We propose an approach to measure the dynamical contribution value of each edge. Interestingly, these contribution values can be both positive and negative, which are determined by the left and right Fiedler vectors. Further, we show that the cumulated dynamical contribution value of all edges is exactly the Fiedler value. This provides a promising angle on the Fiedler value in terms of dynamics and network structure. Therefore, the percentage of contribution of each edge to the Fiedler value is quantified. Numerical results reveal that network dynamics is significantly influenced by a small fraction of edges, say, one single directed edge contributes to over 90% of the Fiedler value in the Cat Cerebral Cortex network. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.109.054301 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:For a graph G, let f_{ij} be the number of spanning rooted forests in which vertex j belongs to a tree rooted at i. In this paper, we show that for a path, the f_{ij}'s can be expressed as the products of Fibonacci numbers; for a cycle, they are products of Fibonacci and Lucas numbers. The {\em doubly stochastic graph matrix} is the matrix F=(f_{ij})/f, where f is the total number of spanning rooted forests of G and n is the number of vertices in G. F provides a proximity measure for graph vertices. By the matrix forest theorem, F^{-1}=I+L, where L is the Laplacian matrix of G. We show that for the paths and the so-called T-caterpillars, some diagonal entries of F (which provides a measure of the self-connectivity of vertices) converge to \phi^{-1} or to 1-\phi^{-1}, where \phi is the golden ratio, as the number of vertices goes to infinity. Thereby, in the asymptotic, the corresponding vertices can be metaphorically considered as "golden introverts" and "golden extroverts," respectively. This metaphor is reinforced by a Markov chain interpretation of the doubly stochastic graph matrix, according to which F equals the overall transition matrix of a random walk with a random number of steps on G.

Abstract:We study the maximum number of edges in an $n$ vertex graph with Colin de Verdière parameter no more than $t$. We conjecture that for every integer $t$, if $G$ is a graph with at least $t$ vertices and Colin de Verdière parameter at most $t$, then $|E(G)| \leq t|V(G)|-\binom{t+1}{2}$. We observe a relation to the graph complement conjecture for the Colin de Verdière parameter and prove the conjectured edge upper bound for graphs $G$ such that either $\mu(G) \leq 7$, or $\mu(G) \geq |V(G)|-6$, or the complement of $G$ is chordal, or $G$ is chordal.

Abstract:One perspective on tree decompositions is that they display (low-order) separations of the underlying graph or matroid. The separations displayed by a tree decomposition are necessarily nested. In 2013, Clark and Whittle proved the existence of tree decompositions with flowers added in which, up to a natural equivalence, all low-order separations are displayed. An important step in that proof is to show that flowers can be extended to maximal flowers. In this paper we generalise the notion of a flower to pseudoflowers in graph-like spaces and show for our generalisation, flowers can be extended to maximal flowers.
A characterization of extremal non-transmission-regular graphs by the distance (signless Laplacian) spectral radius

Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple connected graph of order $n$ and $\partial(G)$ is the spectral radius of the distance matrix $D(G)$ of $G$. The transmission $D_i$ of vertex $i$ is the $i$-th row sum of $D(G)$. Denote by $D_{\max}(G)$ the maximum of transmissions over all vertices of $G$, and $\partial^Q(G)$ is the spectral radius of the distance signless Laplacian matrix $D(G)+\mbox{diag}(D_1,D_2,\ldots,D_n)$. In this paper, we present a sharp lower bound of $2D_{\max}(G)-\partial^Q(G)$ among all $n$-vertex connected graphs, and characterize the extremal graphs. Furthermore, we give the minimum values of respective $D_{\max}(G)-\partial(G)$ and $2D_{\max}(G)-\partial^Q(G)$ on trees and characterize the extremal trees.

Spectral extremal results on edge blow-up of graphs

Abstract:Let ${\rm ex}(n,F)$ and ${\rm spex}(n,F)$ be the maximum size and maximum spectral radius of an $F$-free graph of order $n$, respectively. The value ${\rm spex}(n,F)$ is called the spectral extremal value of $F$. Nikiforov [J. Graph Theory 62 (2009) 362--368] gave the spectral Stability Lemma, which implies that for every $\varepsilon>0$, sufficiently large $n$ and a non-bipartite graph $H$ with chromatic number $\chi(H)$, the extremal graph for ${\rm spex}(n,H)$ can be obtained from the Turán graph $T_{\chi(H)-1}(n)$ by adding and deleting at most $\varepsilon n^2$ edges. It is still a challenging problem to determine the exact spectral extremal values of many non-bipartite graphs. Given a graph $F$ and an integer $p\geq 2$, the edge blow-up of $F$, denoted by $F^{p+1}$, is the graph obtained from replacing each edge in $F$ by a $K_{p+1}$ where the new vertices of $K_{p+1}$ are all distinct. In this paper, we determine the exact spectral extremal values of the edge blow-up of all non-bipartite graphs and provide the asymptotic spectral extremal values of the edge blow-up of all bipartite graphs for sufficiently large $n$, which can be seen as a spectral version of the theorem on ${\rm ex}(n,F^{p+1})$ given by Yuan [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 152 (2022) 379--398]. As applications, on the one hand, we generalize several previous results on ${\rm spex}(n,F^{p+1})$ for $F$ being a matching and a star for $p\geq 3$. On the other hand, we obtain the exact values of ${\rm spex}(n,F^{p+1})$ for $F$ being a path, a cycle and a complete graph.

Extremal Trees with Respect to Functions on Adjacent Vertex Degrees

Abstract:The question of finding extremal structures with respect to various graph indices has received much attention in recent years. Among these graph indices, many are defined on adjacent vertex degrees and maximized or minimized by the same extremal structure. We consider a function defined on adjacent degrees of a tree, T, to be f(x,y) and the connectivity function associated with f, R-f(T) = Sigma(uv is an element of E(T)) f(deg(u), deg(v)). We first introduce the extremal tree structures, with a given degree sequence, that maximize or minimize such functions under certain conditions. When a partial ordering, called "majorization", is defined on the degree sequences of trees on n vertices, we compare the extremal trees of different degree sequences pi and pi'. As a consequence many extremal results follow as immediate corollaries. Our finding provides a uniform way of characterizing the extremal structures with respect to a class of graph invariants. We also briefly discuss the applications to specific indices.

Abstract:A well-known theorem of Mantel states that every $n$-vertex graph with more than $\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor $ edges contains a triangle. An interesting problem in extremal graph theory studies the minimum number of edges contained in triangles among graphs with a prescribed number of vertices and edges. Erdős, Faudree and Rousseau (1992) showed that a graph on $n$ vertices with more than $\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor $ edges contains at least $2\lfloor n/2\rfloor +1$ edges in triangles. Such edges are called triangular edges. In this paper, we present a spectral version of the result of Erdős, Faudree and Rousseau. Using the supersaturation-stability and the spectral technique, we prove that every $n$-vertex graph $G$ with $\lambda (G) \ge \sqrt{\lfloor n^2/4\rfloor}$ contains at least $2 \lfloor {n}/{2} \rfloor -1$ triangular edges, unless $G$ is a balanced complete bipartite graph. The method in our paper has some interesting applications. Firstly, the supersaturation-stability can be used to revisit a conjecture of Erdős concerning with the booksize of a graph, which was initially proved by Edwards (unpublished), and independently by Khadžiivanov and Nikiforov (1979). Secondly, our method can improve the bound on the order $n$ of a graph by dropping the condition on $n$ being sufficiently large, which is obtained from the triangle removal lemma. Thirdly, the supersaturation-stability can be applied to deal with the spectral extremal graph problems on counting triangles, which was recently studied by Ning and Zhai (2023).

Abstract:This paper surveys some recent results and progress on the extremal prob- lems in a given set consisting of all simple connected graphs with the same graphic degree sequence. In particular, we study and characterize the extremal graphs having the maximum (or minimum) values of graph invariants such as (Laplacian, p-Laplacian, signless Laplacian) spectral radius, the first Dirichlet eigenvalue, the Wiener index, the Harary index, the number of subtrees and the chromatic number etc, in given sets with the same tree, unicyclic, graphic degree sequences. Moreover, some conjectures are included.

Abstract:Let $F_k$ be the (friendship) graph obtained from $k$ triangles by sharing a common vertex. The $F_k$-free graphs of order $n$ which attain the maximal spectral radius was firstly characterized by Cioabă, Feng, Tait and Zhang [Electron. J. Combin. 27 (4) (2020)], and later uniquely determined by Zhai, Liu and Xue [Electron. J. Combin. 29 (3) (2022)] under the condition that $n$ is sufficiently large. In this paper, we get rid of the condition on $n$ being sufficiently large if $k=2$. The graph $F_2$ is also known as the bowtie. We show that the unique $n$-vertex $F_2$-free spectral extremal graph is the balanced complete bipartite graph adding an edge in the vertex part with smaller size if $n\ge 7$, and the condition $n\ge 7$ is tight. Our result is a spectral generalization of a theorem of Erdős, Füredi, Gould and Gunderson [J. Combin. Theory Ser. B 64 (1995)], which states that $\mathrm{ex}(n,F_2)=\left\lfloor {n^2}/{4} \right\rfloor +1$. Moreover, we study the spectral extremal problem for $F_k$-free graphs with given number of edges. In particular, we show that the unique $m$-edge $F_2$-free spectral extremal graph is the join of $K_2$ with an independent set of $\frac{m-1}{2}$ vertices if $m\ge 8$, and the condition $m\ge 8$ is tight.

Abstract:We are interested in the clustering problem on graphs: it is known that if there are two underlying clusters, then the signs of the eigenvector corresponding to the second largest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix can reliably reconstruct the two clusters. We argue that the vertices for which the eigenvector has the largest and the smallest entries, respectively, are unusually strongly connected to their own cluster and more reliably classified than the rest. This can be regarded as a discrete version of the Hot Spots conjecture and should be useful in applications. We give a rigorous proof for the stochastic block model and several examples.

Abstract:A $q$-graph $H$ on $n$ vertices is a set of vectors of length $n$ with all entries from $\{0,1,\dots,q\}$ and every vector (that we call a $q$-edge) having exactly two non-zero entries. The support of a $q$-edge $\mathbf{x}$ is the pair $S_{\mathbf{x}}$ of indices of non-zero entries. We say that $H$ is an $s$-copy of an ordinary graph $F$ if $|H|=|E(F)|$, $F$ is isomorphic to the graph with edge set $\{S_{\mathbf{x}}:\mathbf{x}\in H\}$, and whenever $v\in e,e'\in E(F)$, the entries with index corresponding to $v$ in the $q$-edges corresponding to $e$ and $e'$ sum up to at least $s$. E.g., the $q$-edges $(1,3,0,0,0), (0,1,0,0,3)$, and $(3,0,0,0,1)$ form a 4-triangle. The Turán number $\mathrm{ex}(n,F,q,s)$ is the maximum number of $q$-edges that a $q$-graph $H$ on $n$ vertices can have if it does not contain any $s$-copies of $F$. In the present paper, we determine the asymptotics of $\mathrm{ex}(n,F,q,q+1)$ for many graphs $F$.

Flipping Non-Crossing Spanning Trees

Abstract:For a set $P$ of $n$ points in general position in the plane, the flip graph $F(P)$ has a vertex for each non-crossing spanning tree on $P$ and an edge between any two spanning trees that can be transformed into each other by one edge flip. The diameter ${\rm diam}(F(P))$ of this graph is subject of intensive study. For points in general position, it is between $3n/2-5$ and $2n-4$, with no improvement for 25 years. For points in convex position, it lies between $3n/2 - 5$ and $\approx1.95n$, where the lower bound was conjectured to be tight up to an additive constant and the upper bound is a recent breakthrough improvement over several bounds of the form $2n-o(n)$. In this work, we provide new upper and lower bounds on ${\rm diam}(F(P))$, mainly focusing on points in convex position. We show $14n/9 - O(1) \le {\rm diam}(F(P)) \le 5n/3 - 3$, by this disproving the conjectured upper bound of $3n/2$ for convex position, and relevantly improving both the long-standing lower bound for general position and the recent new upper bound for convex position. We complement these by showing that if one of $T,T'$ has at most two boundary edges, then ${\rm dist}(T,T') \le 2d/2 < 3n/2$, where $d = |T-T'|$ is the number of edges in one tree that are not in the other. To prove both the upper and the lower bound, we introduce a new powerful tool. Specifically, we convert the flip distance problem for given $T,T'$ to the problem of a largest acyclic subset in an associated conflict graph $H(T,T')$. In fact, this method is powerful enough to give an equivalent formulation of the diameter of $F(P)$ for points $P$ in convex position up to lower-order terms. As such, conflict graphs are likely the key to a complete resolution of this and possibly also other reconfiguration problems.

Abstract:Introduced in 1947, the Wiener index W(T) = Sigma({u,v}subset of V(T)) d(u, v) is one of the most thoroughly studied chemical indices. The extremal structures ( in particular, trees with various constraints) that maximize or minimize the Wiener index have been extensively investigated. The Harary index H(T) = Sigma({u,v}subset of V(T)) 1/d(u, v), introduced in 1993, can be considered as the "reciprocal analogue" of the Wiener index. From recent studies, it is known that the extremal structures of the Harary index and the Wiener index coincide in many instances, i.e., the graphs that maximize the Wiener index minimize the Harary index and vice versa. In this note we provide some general statements regarding functions of distances of a tree, from which some of the extremal structures with respect to the Harary index (and a generalized version of it) are characterized. Among the results a recent conjecture of Ilic, Yu and Feng is proven. A case when the extremal structures of these two indices differ is also provided. Finally, we derive some previously known extremal results as immediate corollaries.
