Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the notions of map-germs of pedal unfolding type and normalized Legendrian map-germs; and then we show that the fundamental theorem of calculus provides a natural one to one correspondence between Whitney umbrellas of pedal unfolding type and normalized swallowtails.

Abstract:We study geometry on curves passing through a Whitney umbrella by using a Darboux frame along it. We define three invariants by using Frenet-Serre type formula relating to the geodesic curvature, the normal curvature, and the geodesic torsion. We investigate the degrees of divergence and the top-terms of these invariants and their geometric meanings. We also consider a developable surface along the curve.

Abstract:This is a continuation of the authors' earlier work on deformations of cuspidal edges. We give a representation formula for swallowtails in the Euclidean 3-space. Using this, we investigate map germs of generic swallowtails in 3-dimensional space from, and show some important properties of them. In particular, we give a representation formula giving all map germs of swallowtails in the Euclidean 3-space whose Gaussian curvatures are bounded from below by a positive constant or by a negative constant from above. Using this, we show that any swallowtails are deformed into a swallowtail of constant Gaussian curvature preserving the sign of their Gaussian curvatures.

Abstract:We study the singularities of the members of the family of height functions on Whitney umbrellas, which is also known as cross-caps, and show that the family of the height functions is a versal unfolding. Moreover, we study local intersections of a Whitney umbrella with a hyperplane through its singular point.

Abstract:Let $M$ be a smooth surface in $\mathbb R^3$ (or a complex surface in $\mathbb C^3$) and $k\geq 2$ be an integer. At any point on $M$ and for any plane in $\mathbb R^3$, we construct a holomorphic map-germ $(\mathbb C^2,0)\to(\mathbb C^3,0)$ of the form $F_k(x,y)= (x,y^k,f(x,y))$, called a $k$-folding map-germ. We study in this paper the local singularities of $k$-folding map-germs and relate them to the extrinsic differential geometry of $M$. More precisely, we (1) stratify the jet space of $k$-folding map-germs so that the strata of codimension $\le 4$ correspond to topologically equivalent $\mathcal A$-finitely determined germs; (2) obtain the topological classification of $k$-folding map-germs on generic surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$ (or $\mathbb C^3$); (3) generalise the work of Bruce-Wilkinson on folding maps ($k=2$); (4) recover, in a unified way, results obtained by considering the contact of surfaces with lines, planes and spheres; and (5) discover new robust features on smooth surfaces in $\mathbb R^3$.

Abstract:We consider equivalence relations among smooth map germs with respect to geometry of G-structures on the target space germ. These equivalence relations are natural generalization of right-left equivalence (i.e., A-equivalence) in the sense of Thom-Mather depending on geometric structures on the target space germ. Unfortunately, these equivalence relations are not necessarily geometric subgroups in the sense of Damon (1984). However, we have interesting applications of these equivalence relations.

Abstract:In this work, we consider a finitely determined map germ $f$ from $(\mathbb{C}^2,0)$ to $(\mathbb{C}^3,0)$. We characterize the Whitney equisingularity of an unfolding $F=(f_t,t)$ of $f$ through the constancy of a single invariant in the source. Namely, the Milnor number of the curve $W_t(f)=D(f_t)\cup f_t^{-1}(\gamma)$, where $D(f)$ denotes the double point curve of $f_t$. This gives an answer to a question by Ruas in 1994.

Abstract:We produce new examples supporting the Mond conjecture which can be stated as follows. The number of parameters needed for a miniversal unfolding of a finitely determined map-germ from $n$-space to $(n+1)$-space is less than (or equal to if the map-germ is weighted homogeneous) the rank of the $n$th homology group of the image of a stable perturbation of the map-germ. We give examples of finitely determined map-germs of corank 2 from 3-space to 4-space satisfying the conjecture. We introduce a new type of augmentations to generate series of finitely determined map-germs in dimensions $(n,n+1)$ from a given one in dimensions $(n-1,n)$. We present more examples in dimensions $(4,5)$ and $(5,6)$ based on our examples, and verify the conjecture for them.

Abstract:In 1980s, Thurston established a topological characterization theorem for postcritically finite rational maps. In this paper, a decomposition theorem for a class of postcritically infinite branched covering termed Herman map is developed. It's shown that every Herman map can be decomposed along a stable multicurve into finitely many Siegel maps and Thurston maps, such that the combinations and rational realizations of these resulting maps essentially dominate the original one. This result is motivated by a non-expanding version of McMullen's problem, and Thurston's theory on characterization of rational maps. It enables us to prove a Thurston-type theorem for rational maps with Herman rings.
On invariants of a map germ from n-space to 2n-space

Abstract:We consider $\mathcal{A}$-finite map germs $f$ from $(\mathbb{C}^n,0)$ to $(\mathbb{C}^{2n},0)$. First, we show that the number of double points that appears in a stabilization of $f$, denoted by $d(f)$, can be calculated as the length of the local ring of the double point set $D^2(f)$ of $f$, given by the Mond's ideal. In the case where $n\leq 3$ and $f$ is quasihomogeneous, we also present a formula to calculate $d(f)$ in terms of the weights and degrees of $f$. Finally, we consider an unfolding $F(x,t) = (f_t(x),t)$ of $f$ and we find a set of invariants whose constancy in the family $f_t$ is equivalent to the Whitney equisingularity of $F$. As an application, we present a formula to calculate the Euler obstruction of the image of $f$.

Abstract:We study germs of analytic maps $f:(X,S)\rightarrow(\mathbb{C}^p,0)$, when $X$ is an ICIS of dimension $n<p$. We define an image Milnor number, generalizing Mond's definition, $\mu_I(X,f)$ and give results known for the smooth case such as the conservation of this quantity by deformations. We also use this to characterise the Whitney equisingularity of families of corank one map germs $f_t\colon(\mathbb{C}^n,S)\to(\mathbb{C}^{n+1},0)$ with isolated instabilities in terms of the constancy of the $\mu_I^*$-sequences of $f_t$ and the projections $\pi\colon D^2(f_t)\to\mathbb{C}^n$, where $D^2(f_t)$ is the ICIS given by double point space of $f_t$ in $\mathbb{C}^n\times\mathbb{C}^n$. The $\mu_I^*$-sequence of a map germ consist of the image Milnor number of the map germ and all its successive transverse slices.

Abstract:In this paper, we apply classical energy principles to Euler elasticae, i.e., closed C^2 curves in the plane supplied with the Euler functional U (the integral of the square of the curvature along the curve). We study the critical points of U, find the shapes of the curves corresponding to these critical points and show which of the critical points are stable equilibrium points of the energy given by U, and which are unstable. It turns out that the set of stable equilibrium points coincides with the set of minima of U, so that the corresponding shapes of the curves obtained may be regarded as normal forms of Euler elasticae. In this way, we find the solution of the Euler problem (set in 1744) for plane closed elasticae. As a by-product, we obtain a "mechanical" proof of the Whitney--Graustein theorem on the classification of regular curves in the plane up to regular homotopy (in the particular case of C^2 curves). Besides mathematical theorems, our work includes a computer graphics software which shows, as an animation, how any plane curve evolves to its normal form under a discretized version of gradient descent along the (discretized) Euler functional.

Abstract:We give two characterisations of when a map-germ admits a 1-parameter stable unfolding, one related to the $\mathscr K_e$-codimension and another related to the normal form of a versal unfolding. We then prove that there are infinitely many finitely determined map-germs of multiplicity 4 from $\mathbb K^3$ to $\mathbb K^3$ which do not admit a 1-parameter stable unfolding.

Abstract:Generic smooth plane-to-plane map germs are topologically equivalent to cones of mappings of the circle. We carry out a complete topological classification of smooth stable mappings of the circle and show how this classification leads, via the result mentioned above, to a topological classification of finitely determined real analytic plane-to-plane map germs.

Abstract:We study a class of homotopies between maps from 4‐manifolds to surfaces which we call cusp merges. These homotopies naturally appear in the uniqueness problems for certain pictorial descriptions of 4‐manifolds derived from maps to the 2‐sphere (for example, broken Lefschetz fibrations, wrinkled fibrations, or Morse 2‐functions). Our main results provide a classification of cusp merge homotopies in terms of suitably framed curves in the source manifold, as well as a fairly explicit description of a parallel transport diffeomorphism associated to a cusp merge homotopy. The latter is the key ingredient in understanding how the aforementioned pictorial descriptions change under homotopies involving cusp merges. We apply our methods to the uniqueness problem of surface diagrams of 4‐manifolds and describe algorithms to obtain surface diagrams for total spaces of (achiral) Lefschetz fibrations and 4‐manifolds of the form M×S1, where M is a 3‐manifold. Along the way we provide extensive background material about maps to surfaces and homotopies thereof and develop a theory of parallel transport that generalizes the use of gradient flows in Morse theory.

Abstract:Let $S$ and $S'$ be orientable finite-type surfaces of genus $g\geq 4$ and $g'$, respectively. We prove that every multitwist-preserving map between pure mapping class groups $\text{PMap}(S)\to \text{PMap}(S')$ is induced by a multi-embedding. As an application, we classify all homomorphisms $\text{PMap}(S)\to \text{PMap}(S')$ for $g\geq 4$ and $g' \leq 6\cdot 2^{g-4}$.

Abstract:We consider combinatorial maps with fixed combinatorial knot numbered with augmenting numeration called normalized knot. We show that knot's normalization doesn't affect combinatorial map what concerns its generality. Knot's normalization leads to more concise numeration of corners in maps, e.g., odd or even corners allow easy to follow distinguished cycles in map caused by the fixation of the knot. Knot's normalization may be applied to edge structuring knot too. If both are normalized then one is fully and other partially normalized mutually.
