Abstract:The τ decay library TAUOLA has been enriched. The present version of the program includes more than twenty decay channels, including: (a) leptonic modes τ- → nνe- → nνμ-(γ), (b) one-meson modes: νπ-, νK-, (c) t wo-meson modes: νπ- π0(ϱ-), νK0π- (K∗-), νK- π0(K∗-), (d) three-meson modes: νπ-2ν 0(a-1), ν2π-π+ (a-1), νK+ K- π-, ν K̄0K0π-, νK- K̄0π0, νK- π0π0, νK- π-π+, νK0π0π-, νηπ-π 0, (e) four-pion modes: νπ-3π0, ν2π-π+π0 (including the ωπ- contribution), (f) multi-pion modes: νnπ±,0 with n > 4, and finally the decay τ- → νπ- π0γ from the ω → πγ.Complete O(α) QED corrections are included in the leptonic decay channels, and for other decay channels an interface is provided to the PHOTOS Monte Carlo generator for approximate simulation of the QED corrections. An interface to the τ pair production generators KORALB and KORALZ is also included. Final-state MC events are coded in the common block proposed by the Particle Data Group.

New hadronic currents in TAUOLA: for confrontation with the experimental data

Abstract:The status of implementation of new hadronic currents into the Monte Carlo system for simulation of tau-lepton production and decay in high-energy accelerator experiments is reviewed. Since the tau-lepton conference in 2010 substantial progress was achieved: (i) For the TAUOLA Monte Carlo generator of tau-lepton decays, automated and simultaneous use of many versions of form factors for the calculation of optional weights for fits was developed and checked to work in the Belle and BaBar software environment. Alternative parameterizations of hadronic currents based on the Resonance Chiral approach are available now. This was achieved for more than 88% of the total tau hadronic width. (ii) the TAUOLA universal interface based on HepMC (the C++ event record) is available. This is the case for C++ users of PHOTOS Monte Carlo for radiative corrections in decays, as well. An algorithm for weighted events to explore spin effects in analysis of hard processes was prepared. (iii) Kernels featuring a complete first-order matrix element are available now for PHOTOS users interested in decays of Z and W bosons. New tests with different options of matrix elements for those and for Kl3 decays are available as well. Presented results illustrate the status of the projects performed in collaboration with Zofia Czyczula, Nadia Davidson, Tomasz Przedzinski, Olga Shekhovtsova, Elzbieta Richter-Was, Pablo Roig, Qingjun Xu and others.

Abstract:The status of Monte Carlo system for the simulation of tau-lepton production and decay in high-energy accelerator experiments is reviewed. Since previous tau-lepton conference in 2008 some practical modifications have been introduced: (i) For the TAUOLA Monte Carlo generator of tau-lepton decays, automated and simultaneous use of many versions of form-factors for the calculation of optional weights for fits was developped and checked to work in Belle and BaBar software environment. Work on alternative paramterizations of hadronic decays is advanced. (ii) the TAUOLA universal interface based on HepMC (the C++ event record) is now public. A similar interface for PHOTOS is now also public. (iii) Extension of PHOTOS Monte Carlo for QED bremsstrahlung in decays featuring kernels based on complete first order matrix element are gradually becoming widely available thanks to properites of the new, HepMC based interface. (iv) Tests of the programs systematized with the help of MC-TESTER are now available for FORTRAN and C++ users. Presented here results illustrate the status of the projects performed in collaboration with Nadia Davidson, Piotr Golonka, Gizo Nanava, Tomasz Przedzinski, Olga Shekhovtsova, El zbieta Richter-Was, Pablo Roig, Qingjun Xu and others.

Tau lepton production and decays: perspective of multi-dimensional distributions and Monte Carlo methods

Abstract:Status of tau lepton decay Monte Carlo generator TAUOLA, its main applications and recent developments are reviewed. It is underlined, that in recent efforts on development of new hadronic currents, the multi-dimensional nature of distributions of the experimental data must be taken with a great care: lesson from comparison and fits to the BaBar and Belle data is recalled. It was found, that as in the past at a time of comparisons with CLEO and ALEPH data, proper fitting, to as detailed as possible representation of the experimental data, is essential for appropriate developments of models of tau decay dynamic. This multi-dimensional nature of distributions is also important for observables where tau leptons are used to constrain experimental data. In later part of the presentation,use of the TAUOLA program for phenomenology of W,Z,H decays at LHC is addressed, in particular in the context of the Higgs boson parity measurements. Some new results, relevant for QED lepton pair emission are mentioned as well.

Abstract:We study the $d^2 \Gamma_d /(d\omega d\cos\theta_d) $, $d\Gamma_d /d\cos\theta_d$ and $ d\Gamma_d /dE_d $ distributions, which are defined in terms of the visible energy and polar angle of the charged particle from the $\tau-$decay in $b\to c \tau\, (\mu \bar \nu_\mu \nu_\tau,\pi \nu_\tau,\rho\nu_\tau) \bar\nu_\tau$ reactions. The first two contain information on the transverse tau-spin, tau-angular and tau-angular-spin asymmetries of the $H_b\to H_c\tau\bar\nu_\tau$ parent decay and, from a dynamical point of view, they are richer than the commonly used one, $d^2 \Gamma_d /(d\omega dE_d) $, since the latter only depends on the tau longitudinal polarization. We pay attention to the deviations with respect to the predictions of the standard model (SM) for these new observables, considering new physics (NP) operators constructed using both right- and left-handed neutrino fields, within an effective field-theory approach. We present results for $\Lambda_b\to\Lambda_c\tau\, (\mu \bar \nu_\mu \nu_\tau,\pi\nu_\tau,\rho\nu_\tau)\bar\nu_\tau$ and $\bar B \to D^{(*)}\tau\, (\mu \bar \nu_\mu \nu_\tau,\pi\nu_\tau,\rho\nu_\tau) \bar\nu_\tau$ sequential decays and discuss their use to disentangle between different NP models. In this respect, we show that $d\Gamma_d /d\cos\theta_d$, which should be measured with sufficiently good statistics, becomes quite useful, especially in the $\tau\to \pi \nu_\tau$ mode. The study carried out in this work could be of special relevance due to the recent LHCb measurement of the lepton flavor universality ratio ${\cal R}_{\Lambda_c}$ in agreement with the SM. The experiment identified the $\tau$ using its hadron decay into $\pi^-\pi^+\pi^-\nu_\tau$, and this result for ${\cal R}_{\Lambda_c}$, which is in conflict with the phenomenology from the $b$-meson sector, needs confirmation from other tau reconstruction channels.

Abstract:Nucleon decays put extremely stringent bounds on baryon-number-violating interactions. However, in case the corresponding operators involve only $\tau$ leptons, the direct two-body decays, e.g., $p\to\pi^0 \tau^+$, are kinematically not allowed and nucleon decay can only proceed via an off-shell $\tau$, leading to $p\to \pi^0\ell^+\nu_\ell\bar\nu_\tau$. To calculate such processes, the momentum dependence of the form factors for nucleon-to-meson transitions, which describe the hadronization of the underlying process at the quark level, is needed. In this work, we point out new isospin and Fierz relations among such proton-kaon matrix elements and calculate the momentum dependence of the nucleon-to-meson form factors from the universal final-state interactions in terms of pion-nucleon or kaon-nucleon scattering phase shifts. We use these results to derive novel limits on the Wilson coefficients of the baryon-number-violating dimension-$6$ operators involving a $\tau$ lepton, which were previously unconstrained.

Abstract:Hadronic decays rates of the $\tau$ lepton into multi meson final states are presented. The structure of the hadronic matrix elements for various decay modes is discussed. The formalism of structure functions allows for a detailed test of these matrix elements. Various correlations are discussed which are sensitive to possible CP violation and new physics effects in the decay modes.

Abstract:The polarimeter vector of the τ represents an optimal observable for the measurement of the τ spin. In this paper we present an algorithm for the computation of the τ polarimeter vector for the decay channels τ − → π − π + π − ν τ and τ − → π − π 0 π 0 ν τ . The algorithm is based on a model for the hadronic current in these decay channels, which was fitted to data recorded by the CLEO experiment [1]. Solution method: In this paper, we present an algorithm for the computation of the τ polarimeter vector h for the decay channels τ − → π − π + π − ν τ and τ − → π − π 0 π 0 ν τ . The algorithm is based on a model for the dynamics of hadronic interactions in these decay channels. The parameters of the model have been determined by a fit to data recorded by the CLEO experiment.

Abstract:The Monte Carlo for lepton pair production and tau decays consist of KKMC for lepton pair production, tauola for tau lepton decays and photos for radiative corrections in decays. An effort for adaptation of the system for precision data to be collected at Belle II experiment lead to extension of phase space generation modules both in photos and tauola to enable decays and/or radiative corrections of additional light lepton pairs. The phase-space and matrix element parts of the programs are separated, that is why extension to processes where lepton pair is produced through narrow resonances, like dark photon, was straight forward. In the present version of tauola, list of tau decay channels is enriched with multitude of exotic ones, useful for searches of new physics. The hadronic currents parametrizations of main decay channels is prepared for basic simulation in the experiment. The basis for future work on precise fits of hadronic currents including Machine Learning is retained, but development of necessary software solutions is left for the forthcoming years. Presented programs versions are available in stand-alone format from gitlab or through the basf2 system of Belle II software. Official distribution web pages, documenting programs tests, are retained but not necessarily up to the date.

Isospin breaking corrections in $2π$ production in tau decays and $e^+e^-$ annihilation: consequences for the muon $g-2$ and CVC tests

Abstract:We revisit the isospin-breaking corrections relating the $e^+e^-$ hadronic cross-section and the tau decay spectral function, focusing on the di-pion channel, that gives the dominant contribution to the hadronic vacuum polarization piece of the muon $g-2$. We test different types of electromagnetic and weak form factors and show that both, the Gounaris-Sakurai and a dispersive-based approach, describe accurately $\tau$ lepton and $e^+e^-$ data (less when KLOE measurements are included in the fits) and comply reasonably well with analyticity constraints. From these results we obtain the isospin-breaking contribution to the conserved vector current (CVC) prediction of the ${\rm BR}(\tau \to \pi\pi\nu_{\tau})$ and to the $2\pi$ hadronic vacuum polarization (HVP) contribution to the muon $g-2$, in agreement with previous determinations and with similar precision. Our results abound in the convenience of using tau data-based results in the updated data-driven prediction of the muon $g-2$ in the Standard Model.

Abstract:The $\tau$ lepton decays $\tau \to [K^- K^0 \pi^0, K^- K^+ \pi^-, K ^0 \bar{K^0} \pi^-] \nu_{\tau}$ are described in the $U(3) \times U(3)$ NJL quark model. The contact channel and intermediate channels with axial-vector, vector and pseudoscalar mesons are taken into account. It is shown that the strange scalar meson $K^*_0$ plays an important role in these processes in addition to the intermediate vector meson $K^*$. The obtained results are in satisfactory agreement with the recent experimental data within the experimental and theoretical uncertainties.

Feasibility of tau g-2 measurements in ultra-peripheral collisions of heavy ions

Abstract:The anomalous magnetic moment of the tau lepton, a_tau = (g_tau - 2)/2, is a sensitive probe of new physics but is extremely difficult to measure precisely in contrast to electron and muon moments. The best experimental limits were set by the DELPHI collaboration more than 15 years ago in studies of the ditau production in the e+e -> e+e+tau+tau process. Ultra-peripheral collisions (UPCs) of heavy ions at the LHC may provide a unique opportunity to improve the a_tau constraints in the studies of Pb+Pb -> Pb+Pb+tau+tau process. We review recent proposals to study ditau production via semi-leptonic tau decays in Pb-Pb UPC with the available ATLAS and CMS data and discuss the feasibility to explore this process down to low transverse momenta of decay leptons with the ALICE and LHCb experiments.

Abstract:The radiative corrections to the τ−→(P1P2)−ντ ( P1,2=π , K ) decays are calculated for the first time including the structure-dependent real photon corrections, which are obtained using resonance chiral theory. Abstract:In this work, we make a study of the τ− → ωπ−ντ decay in the framework of low-energy effective field theory. The J^𝒫G decompositions of the quark currents and the ωπ final state show that, besides the Standard Model vector interaction, only the non-standard tensor interaction can have a non-zero contribution to the decay. To discuss its effect, a reliable calculation of the ωπ tensor form factors is necessary. After constructing the Lagrangian of resonance chiral theory with external tensor sources, we calculate both the vector and tensor form factors with the relevant resonance couplings determined by combining the QCD short-distance constraints, the fit to the spectral function of τ− → ωπ−ντ decay, as well as the matching between the 𝒪(p^4) odd-intrinsic-parity operators after integrating out the vector resonances and the 𝒪(p^6) operators of chiral perturbation theory. The new physics effect is then investigated in the distributions of the spectral function and the forward-backward asymmetry of τ− → ωπ−ντ decay. We find that the spectral function is dominated by the Standard Model, and the non-standard tensor contribution is negligible. However, since the forward-backward asymmetry can be only generated with a non-zero tensor interaction, the observable is quite sensitive to this kind of new physics. A future measurement of the observable at the Belle II experiment as well as at the proposed Tera-Z and STCF facilities is, therefore, strongly called for to check the existence of such a non-standard tensor interaction.
Tau polarization effects in $ν_τ/ \barν_τ$-tungsten interactions at the LHC energies

Abstract:Recent studies have demonstrated that the tau produced in charged current neutrino deeply inelastic interactions at the GeV -- TeV neutrino energy range is not fully polarized. In this paper we investigate the impact of the tau polarization on the pions generated in its decay. In particular, we consider tau neutrino - tungsten interactions at the LHC energies and estimate the associated pion momentum, energy and angular distributions. The contribution of the $F_5$ is also investigated. Our results indicate that the pion properties are sensitive to the tau polarization state as well as to the magnitude of $F_5$.

Abstract:Based on experimental data by the Bell Collaboration, we present a phenomenological analysis of the angular distributions in tau- -->K_S pi-nu_tau decay. Our study shows that the angular analysis could lead to some interesting observables, and the future experimental investigation of these observables might be very helpful in revealing the nature of the scalar components of the decay. New physics contributions from the two-Higgs-doublet model to this decay have also been examined.
