Abstract:The ALICE Collaboration has measured heavy-flavour production through the reconstruction of hadronic decays of D mesons at mid-rapidity and via semi-electronic (at mid-rapidity) and semi-muonic (at forward rapidity) decays of charm and beauty hadrons in pp, p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions. A summary of the most recent results from p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV and Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 2.76$ TeV is presented in this paper.

Abstract:The ALICE experiment was proposed in 1993, to study strongly-interacting matter at extreme energy densities and temperatures. This proposal entailed a comprehensive investigation of nuclear collisions at the LHC. Its physics programme initially focused on the determination of the properties of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP), a deconfined state of quarks and gluons, created in such collisions. The ALICE physics programme has been extended to cover a broader ensemble of observables related to Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of strong interactions. The experiment has studied Pb-Pb, Xe-Xe, p-Pb and pp collisions in the multi-TeV centre of mass energy range, during the Run 1-2 data-taking periods at the LHC (2009-2018). The aim of this review is to summarise the key ALICE physics results in this endeavor, and to discuss their implications on the current understanding of the macroscopic and microscopic properties of strongly-interacting matter at the highest temperatures reached in the laboratory. It will review the latest findings on the properties of the QGP created by heavy-ion collisions at LHC energies, and describe the surprising QGP-like effects in pp and p-Pb collisions. Measurements of few-body QCD interactions, and their impact in unraveling the structure of hadrons and hadronic interactions, will be discussed. ALICE results relevant for physics topics outside the realm of QCD will also be touched upon. Finally, prospects for future measurements with the ALICE detector in the context of its planned upgrades will also be briefly described.

Abstract:The measurement of heavy-flavour production allows us to characterise the properties of the deconfined medium created in Pb-Pb collisions at LHC energies. pp collisions serve as a reference for Pb-Pb studies, and p-Pb collisions provide information on initial and/or final state effects related to cold nuclear matter. We report on open heavy-flavour as well as quarkonium production in p-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The experimental data are compared with results from Pb-Pb collisions as well as with various theoretical predictions.

Abstract:Thanks to the unique detector design adopted to fulfill tracking and particle-identification (PID) requirements (e.g. low momentum cut-off and low material budget), the ALICE experiment provides significant information about hadron production both in pp and Pb-Pb collisions. In particular, the $p_{\rm T}$-differential and integrated production yields of identified particles play a key role in the study of the collective and thermal properties of the matter formed in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Furthermore, the production of high-$p_{\rm T}$ particles provides insights into the property of the hot medium created in such collisions and the in-medium energy-loss mechanisms. Transverse momentum spectra of $\pi^{\pm}$, K$^{\pm}$, p and $\bar{\rm p}$ are measured at mid-rapidity ($\left|y\right| <~0.5$) over a wide momentum range, from $\sim$~100 MeV/$c$ up to $\sim$~20 GeV/$c$. The current results on light-flavour charged-hadron production will be presented for pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 0.9, 2.76 and 7 TeV and for Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV. Integrated production yields, transverse momentum spectra and particle ratios in pp are discussed as a function of the collision energy and compared to previous experiments and commonly-used Monte Carlo models. Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC feature the highest radial flow ever observed and an unexpectedly low p/$\pi$ production ratio. The results are presented as a function of collision centrality and compared to RHIC data in Au-Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 200 GeV and predictions from thermal and hydrodynamic models. The nuclear modification factor ($R_{\rm AA}$) of identified hadrons will also be discussed and compared to unidentified charged particles and theoretical predictions. This is observed to be identical for all particle species at high-$p_{\rm T}$.

Abstract:Results on open heavy-flavour production in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt{s_NN} = 2.76 TeV measured with ALICE at the LHC are presented. The nuclear modification factors, extracted in three different channels, show a strong suppression in central collisions. The measured D-meson azimuthal anisotropy indicates a non-zero v2, which is similar to the one of charged hadrons.

Abstract:The ALICE experiment has been taking data since 2009, with proton and lead beams. In this paper, the different particle identification techniques used by the experiment are briefly reviewed. The current results on identified particle spectra in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 900 \mathrm{GeV}$ and 7 TeV, and in Pb-Pb collisions at $\snn = 2.76 \mathrm{TeV}$ are summarized. In particular, the energy dependence of the spectral shapes and particle ratios in pp collisions is discussed and the results are compared to previous experiments and commonly used Monte Carlo models. The baryon/meson ratio $\Lambda/K^0_S$ is studied in Pb-Pb collisions as a function of transverse momentum and centrality, and it is compared to previous results. The evolution of the particle spectra in Pb-Pb with collision centrality is compared to measurements at lower energies and discussed in the context of thermal and hydrodynamical models.

Abstract:Heavy-flavor hadron production studies in Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt(s_{NN}) = 2.76 TeV with the 2010 and 2011 data samples are presented. The measurements are performed with the ALICE detector in various decay channels and in a wide kinematic range. Heavy-flavor hadrons exhibit a suppression in the most central Pb-Pb collisions that amounts to a factor 3-5 for pT ~ 8-10 GeV/c. The second harmonic of the azimuthal distribution Fourier decomposition, v2, is non-zero for non-central collisions at intermediate pT (~3 GeV/c).

Abstract:The ALICE experiment is devoted to the study of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in heavy-ion collisions at the CERN LHC. The experimental setup allows for the study of many different observables that contributed to the characterization of the properties of the QGP. The ALICE experiment went through a major upgrade during LS2 to profit from the increased LHC luminosity and to improve the tracking r esolution. An additional upgrade is planned for LS3. A new experiment, ALICE 3, was proposed as next major upgrade in LS4. In this contribution, a selection of recent physics results was presented together with a glimpse of the next upgrades during LS3 and LS4, with the main focus on ALICE 3 and its physics program.

Abstract:Heavy-flavour hadrons, containing at least one charm or beauty quark, are excellent probes of the deconfined medium created in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions, known as quark-gluon plasma. Results in smaller collision systems, such as proton-proton and p-Pb collisions, besides representing an important baseline for interpreting heavy-ion measurements, are crucial to test perturbative QCD calculations and hadronisation mechanisms in the absence of hot medium effects, as well as to search for commonalities with heavy-ion systems. Recently, measurements in proton-proton and p-Pb collisions have revealed unforeseen features with respect to the expectations based on previous results from ${\rm e}^{+}{\rm e}^{-}$ and ep collisions, showing that fragmentation fractions of heavy quarks are not universal. In this contribution, an overview of the most recent ALICE heavy-flavour measurements, along with the comparison to available calculations, will be discussed.

Abstract:We present new results on transverse momentum spectra, integrated yields, and mean transverse momenta of pions, kaons, and protons, as well as of $\phi$-mesons for various centrality classes measured in Pb-Pb and Xe-Xe collisions at the LHC. This unique set of data allows us to investigate bulk particle production for very different systems at similar multiplicities. The chemical and kinetic freeze-out parameters are extracted via statistical-thermal and combined blast-wave fits to the data in heavy-ion collisions and are compared to results obtained in pp and p-Pb collisions at similar multiplicities. The evolution of collective-like effects from pp and p-Pb collisions to Xe-Xe and Pb-Pb collisions is further investigated by detailed comparisons to predictions from models.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the Seiberg-Witten gauge theory for Seifert fibered spaces. The monopoles over these three-manifolds, for a particular choice of metric and perturbation, are completely described. Gradient flow lines between monopoles are identified with holomorphic data on an associated ruled surface, and a dimension formula for such flows is calculated.

Abstract:Heavy quarks, i.e. charm and beauty, are sensitive probes of the medium produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. They are produced in the early stage of the collision, mainly in hard partonic scattering processes, and are expected to experience the whole collision evolution interacting with the medium constituents via both elastic and inelastic processes. The nuclear modification factor ($R_{\rm AA}$) is one of the main experimental observables that allow us to investigate the interaction strength of heavy quarks with the medium. The ALICE collaboration measured the production of open heavy-flavour hadrons via their semi-leptonic decays to electrons at mid-rapidity and to muons at forward rapidity in elementary proton-proton (pp) collisions as well as p--Pb, Pb--Pb and in Xe--Xe collisions. Recent results will be discussed, and model calculations including the interaction of heavy quarks with the hot and dense QCD medium will be compared with the data.

Abstract:This note will be part of Chapter 6.5 of the ALICE Physics Performance Report (PPR), "ALICE Physics: Charm and Beauty", where the capabilities of ALICE for the detection of open heavy flavour particles will be described. We define here the present ALICE baseline for what concerns the heavy flavour production cross sections at LHC and the kinematical distributions of the heavy quark pairs. We start by qualitatively assessing the Bjorken x regimes accessible with charm and beauty measurements at LHC with ALICE (Section 1). In Section 2 we report the most recent results (and the uncertainties) of the next-to-leading order (NLO) pQCD calculations for the cross sections in pp collisions at LHC energies. These results are extrapolated to Pb-Pb collisions in Section 3.1 and to p-Pb collisions in Section 3.2, taking into account nuclear shadowing and parton intrinsic transverse momentum <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://broadening.Heavy" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> quark kinematics as given by the NLO pQCD calculation are reported in Section 4. We tuned the PYTHIA event generator in order to reproduce such results for what concerns the c and b quarks transverse momentum distributions (Section 5). Finally, we report the yields and transverse momentum distributions for D and B mesons (Section 6).

Abstract:Measurements of particle production in proton-nucleus collisions provide a reference to disentangle final state effects, i.e. signatures of the formation of a deconfined hot medium, from initial state effects, already present in cold nuclear matter. Since many initial state effects are expected to vary as a function of the number of collisions suffered by the incoming proton, it is crucial to estimate the centrality of the collision. In p-Pb collisions categorization of events into different centrality classes using a particle multiplicity distribution is complicated by the low particle multiplicities and the large multiplicity fluctuations. We present ALICE measurements of particle production in p-Pb collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 5.02$ TeV, including the pseudo-rapidity and transverse momentum dependence, we discuss the event classification in centrality classes and its implications for the measurements of nuclear modification factors.

Abstract:In high energy hadron collisions, direct photons can be produced in various processes and are of particular interest to study the hot QCD medium since they escape it without being affected. In these proceedings are presented the latest ALICE experiment results concerning direct photon production in proton-proton (pp), proton-lead (p-Pb) and lead-lead (Pb-Pb) collisions. All measurements agree with pQCD calculations at high transverse momentum ($p_{\text{T}}$) and show no direct photon excess at low $p_{\text{T}}$ in small systems while a low $p_{\text{T}}$ signal is found in central Pb-Pb collisions.

Abstract:The production of heavy quarks in pp collisions provides a precision test of perturbative QCD calculations at the LHC energies. More complex collision systems like p--Pb collisions allow studies of cold nuclear matter effects, such as modifications of the parton distribution functions at small x and of the $\kt$ broadening effect. We present the ALICE results of prompt D-meson production as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity, in pp and p--Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7$ TeV and $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=5.02$ TeV respectively. The per-event yield of D mesons in different multiplicity and $\pt$ intervals are compared for pp and p--Pb collisions to study the contribution of multi-parton interactions to open-charm production. Angular correlations of prompt D mesons and heavy-flavour decay electrons with charged hadrons in pp and p-Pb collisions are also shown in different kinematic ranges and compared to pQCD models. These measurements provide information on the charm fragmentation processes, on cold nuclear matter effects on charm production, and on the participation of charm in the collective motion arising in small collision systems like p-Pb.
