Abstract:We find an upper estimate for a splitting time of a thin parallel beam for irrational triangle billiards in terms of some number-theoretic function of angles. We provide an upper estimate on this function for some class of angles.

Abstract:It has long been known that the set of primitive pythagorean triples can be enumerated by descending certain ternary trees. We unify these treatments by considering hyperbolic billiard tables in the Poincare disk model. Our tables have m>=3 ideal vertices, and are subject to the restriction that reflections in the table walls are induced by matrices in the triangle group PSU^\pm_{1,1}\Zbb[i]. The resulting billiard map \tilde B acts on the de Sitter space x_1^2+x_2^2-x_3^2=1, and has a natural factor B on the unit circle, the pythagorean triples appearing as the B-preimages of fixed points. We compute the invariant densities of these maps, and prove the Lagrange and Galois theorems: A complex number of unit modulus has a preperiodic (purely periodic) B-orbit precisely when it is quadratic (and isolated from its conjugate by a billiard wall) over Q(i). Each B as above is a (m-1)-to-1 orientation-reversing covering map of the circle, a property shared by the group character T(z)=z^{-(m-1)}. We prove that there exists a homeomorphism Phi, unique up to postcomposition with elements in a dihedral group, that conjugates B with T; in particular Phi -- whose prototype is the classical Minkowski question mark function -- establishes a bijection between the set of points of degree <=2 over Q(i) and the torsion subgroup of the circle. We provide an explicit formula for Phi, and prove that Phi is singular and Holder continuous with exponent log(m-1) divided by the maximal periodic mean free path in the associated billiard table.

Intermediate spectral statistics of rational triangular quantum billiards

Abstract:Triangular billiards whose angles are rational multiples of $\pi$ are one of the simplest examples of pseudo-integrable models with intriguing classical and quantum properties. We perform an extensive numerical study of spectral statistics of eight quantized rational triangles, six belonging to the family of right-angled Veech triangles and two obtuse rational triangles. Large spectral samples of up to one million energy levels were calculated for each triangle which permits to determine their spectral statistics with great accuracy. It is demonstrated that they are of the intermediate type, sharing some features with chaotic systems, like level repulsion and some with integrable systems, like exponential tails of the level spacing distributions. Another distinctive feature of intermediate spectral statistics is a finite value of the level compressibility.

Abstract:We characterize quantum dynamics in triangular billiards in terms of five properties: (1) the level spacing ratio (LSR), (2) spectral complexity (SC), (3) Lanczos coefficient variance, (4) energy eigenstate localisation in the Krylov basis, and (5) dynamical growth of spread complexity. The billiards we study are classified as integrable, pseudointegrable or non-integrable, depending on their internal angles which determine properties of classical trajectories and associated quantum spectral statistics. A consistent picture emerges when transitioning from integrable to non-integrable triangles: (1) LSRs increase; (2) spectral complexity growth slows down; (3) Lanczos coefficient variances decrease; (4) energy eigenstates delocalize in the Krylov basis; and (5) spread complexity increases, displaying a peak prior to a plateau instead of recurrences. Pseudo-integrable triangles deviate by a small amount in these charactertistics from non-integrable ones, which in turn approximate models from the Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE). Isosceles pseudointegrable and non-integrable triangles have independent sectors that are symmetric and antisymmetric under a reflection symmetry. These sectors separately reproduce characteristics of the GOE, even though the combined system approximates characteristics expected from integrable theories with Poisson distributed spectra.

Algebraic billiards in the Fermat hyperbola

Abstract:Algebraic billiards in a plane curve of degree $d \geq 2$ is a rational correspondence on a surface. The dynamical degree is an algebraic analogue of entropy that measures intersection-theoretic complexity. We compute a lower bound on the dynamical degree of billiards in the generic algebraic curve of degree $d$ over any field of characteristic coprime to $2d$, complementing the upper bound in our previous work. To do this, we specialize to a highly symmetric curve that we call the Fermat hyperbola. Over $\mathbb{C}$, we construct an algebraically stable model for this billiard via an iterated blowup. Over general fields, we compute the growth of a particular big and nef divisor.

Abstract:We explore the triangle outer billiards map in points at infinity in the hyperbolic plane, focusing on the rotation number. Building on Dogru and Tabachnikov's work, which established the conditions for triangles where the rotation number of the billiard map is $1/3$, we examine cases where the rotation number is $2/5$. We provide a sufficient condition for this rotation number and show its necessity for large isosceles triangles. The results are framed within the context of the Beltrami-Klein model. We concludes with a conjecture based on the findings.

Abstract:We show that for a rational polygonal billiard, the set of pairs of points that do not illuminate each other (not connected by a billiard trajectory) is finite, and use the same method to extend the results of Lelièvre, Monteil and Weiss, and of Apisa and Wright about the amount of pairs of points that are finitely blocked with a certain blocking cardinality. We rely on previous work about the blocking property in translation surfaces which ultimately stems from results of Eskin, Mirzakhani and Mohammadi on dynamics of moduli spaces of translation surfaces.

Abstract:In this work we completely describe the dynamics of triangle tiling billiards. In the first part of this work, we propose a geometric approach of dynamics by introducing natural foliations associated to it. In the second part, we exploit the relationship between triangle tiling billiards and a family of fully flipped $3$-interval exchange transformations on the circle. We give a combinatorial approach of dynamics via renormalization. By uniting the two approaches, we prove several conjectures on the dynamics of triangle tiling billiards. First, we prove the Tree Conjecture and the 4n+2 Conjecture, both concerning the symbolic dynamics of periodic trajectories, and both stated by Baird-Smith, Davis, Fromm and Iyer. Second, we study a family of exceptional trajectories which are closely related to the orbits of minimal Arnoux-Rauzy maps. We prove that all of these exceptional trajectories pass by all tiles, which confirms our own conjecture with P. Hubert on their non-linear escape. Moreover, we use tiling billiards to prove the convergence, up to rescaling, of arithmetic orbits of the Arnoux-Yoccoz map to the Rauzy fractal, conjectured by Hooper and Weiss. All of these conjectures have been stated in print in the last three years.

Abstract:Starting from billiard partitions which arose recently in the description of periodic trajectories of ellipsoidal billiards in $d$-dimensional Euclidean space, we introduce a new type of separable integer partition classes, called type B. We study the numbers of basis partitions with $d$ parts and relate them to the Fibonacci sequence and its natural generalizations. Remarkably, the generating series of basis partitions can be related to the quiver generating series of symmetric quivers corresponding to the framed unknot via knots-quivers correspondence, and to the count of Schröder paths.

On odd-periodic orbits in complex planar billiards

Abstract:The famous conjecture of <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://V.Ya.Ivrii" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> (1978) says that {\it in every billiard with infinitely-smooth boundary in a Euclidean space the set of periodic orbits has measure zero}. In the present paper we study the complex version of Ivrii's conjecture for odd-periodic orbits in planar billiards, with reflections from complex analytic curves. We prove positive answer in the following cases: 1) triangular orbits; 2) odd-periodic orbits in the case, when the mirrors are algebraic curves avoiding two special points at infinity, the so-called isotropic points. We provide immediate applications to the real piecewise-algebraic Ivrii's conjecture and to its analogue in the invisibility theory.

Abstract:Building on tools that have been successfully used in the study of rational billiards, such as induced maps and interval exchange transformations, we provide a construction of a one-parameter family of isosceles triangles exhibiting non-periodic trajectories that are not everywhere dense. This provides, by elementary means, a definitive negative answer to a long-standing open question on the density of non-periodic trajectories in triangular billiards.

Abstract:We define a new class of plane billiards - the `pensive billiard' - in which the billiard ball travels along the boundary for some distance depending on the incidence angle before reflecting, while preserving the billiard rule of equality of the angles of incidence and reflection. This generalizes so called `puck billiards' proposed by M.Bialy, as well as a `vortex billiard', i.e. the motion of a point vortex dipole in 2D hydrodynamics on domains with boundary. We prove the variational origin and invariance of a symplectic structure for pensive billiards, as well as study their properties including conditions for a twist map, the existence of periodic orbits, etc. We also demonstrate the appearance of both the golden and silver ratios in the corresponding hydrodynamical vortex setting. Finally, we introduce and describe basic properties of pensive outer billiards.

Weak mixing in rational billiards

Abstract:We completely characterize rational polygons whose billiard flow is weakly mixing in almost every direction as those which are not almost integrable, in the terminology of Gutkin, modulo some low complexity exceptions. This proves a longstanding conjecture of Gutkin. This result is derived from a complete characterization of translation surfaces that are weakly mixing in almost every direction: they are those that do not admit an affine factor map to the circle.

On the complexity of polygonal billiards

Abstract:We show that the complexity of the billiard in a typical polygon grows cubically and the number of saddle connections grows quadratically along certain subsequences. It is known that the set of points whose first n-bounces hits the same sequence of sides as the orbit of an aperiodic phase point z converges to z. We establishe a polynomial lower bound estimate on this convergence rate for almost every z. This yields an upper bound on the upper metric complexity and upper slow entropy of polygonal billiards. We also prove significant deviations from the expected convergence behavior. Finally we extend these results to higher dimensions as well as to arbitrary invariant measures.

Abstract:Given a (simple) grid polygon $P$ in a grid of equilateral triangles, Defant and Jiradilok considered a billiards system where beams of light bounce around inside of $P$. We study the relationship between the perimeter $\operatorname{perim}(P)$ of $P$ and the number of different trajectories $\operatorname{cyc}(P)$ that the billiards system has. Resolving a conjecture of Defant and Jiradilok, we prove the sharp inequality $\operatorname{cyc}(P) \leq (\operatorname{perim}(P) + 2)/4$ and characterize the equality cases.

Abstract:We study the geometry of billiard orbits on rectangular billiards. A truncated billiard orbit induces a partition of the rectangle into polygons. We prove that thirteen is a sharp upper bound for the number of different areas of these polygons.

Abstract:The billiard flow in a planar domain acts on its tangent bundle as geodesic flow with reflections from the boundary. Its trivial first integral is the squared velocity. Bolotin's Conjecture, now a joint theorem of Bialy, Mironov and the author, deals with those planar billiards whose flow admits an integral polynomial in the velocity whose restriction to the unit tangent bundle is non-constant. It states that 1) if the boundary of such a billiard is $C^2$-smooth, nonlinear and connected, then it is a conic; 2) if it is piecewise $C^2$-smooth and contains a nonlinear arc, then it consists of arcs of conics from a confocal pencil and segments of "admissible lines" for the pencil; 3) the minimal degree of the integral is either 2, or 4. In 1997 Sergei Tabachnikov introduced projective billiards: planar curves equipped with a transversal line field, defining reflection of oriented lines and the projective billiard flow. They are common generalization of billiards on constant curvature surfaces, but in general may have no canonical integral. In a previous paper the author classified those $C^4$-smooth connected nonlinear planar projective billiards whose flow admits a non-constant integral that is a rational $0$-homogeneous function of the velocity (with coefficients depending on the position): they are called rationally $0$-homogeneously integrable. It was shown that: 1) the underlying curve is a conic; 2) the minimal degree of integral is equal to two, if the billiard is defined by a dual pencil of conics; 3) otherwise it can be arbitrary even number. In the present paper we classify piecewise $C^4$-smooth rationally $0$-homogeneously integrable projective billiards. Unexpectedly, we show that such a billiard associated to a dual pencil of conics may have integral of minimal degree 2, 4, or 12. For the proof of main results we prove dual results for the so-called dual multibilliards.

Abstract:Abstract We consider the dynamics of light rays in triangle tilings where triangles are transparent and adjacent triangles have equal but opposite indices of refraction. We find that the behavior of a trajectory on a triangle tiling is described by an orientation‐reversing three‐interval exchange transformation on the circle, and that the behavior of all the trajectories on a given triangle tiling is described by a polygon exchange transformation. We observe that, for a particular choice of triangle tiling, certain trajectories appear to approach the Rauzy fractal, under rescaling.
