Abstract:We prove the local existence and uniqueness of the strong solution to the 3-D full Navier-Stokes equations whose the viscosity coefficients and the thermal conductivity coefficient depend on the density and the temperature. The initial density may vanish in an open set and the domain could be bounded or unbounded. Finally, we show the blow-up of the smooth solution to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations in R-n ( n >= 1) when the initial density has compactly support and the initial total momentum is nonzero.

Abstract:We prove the local in time existence of the classical solutions to the system of equations of isothermal viscoelasticity with clamped boundary conditions. We deal with a general form of viscous stress tensor $\mathcal{Z}(F,\dot F)$, assuming a Korn-type condition on its derivative $D_{\dot F}\mathcal{Z}(F, \dot F)$. This condition is compatible with the balance of angular momentum, frame invariance and the Claussius-Duhem inequality. We give examples of linear and nonlinear (in $\dot F$) tensors $\mathcal{Z}$ satisfying these required conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we present some mathematical results on the Doi–Edwards model describing the dynamics of flexible polymers in melts and concentrated solutions. This model, developed in the late 1970s, has been used and extensively tested in modeling and simulation of polymer flows. From a mathematical point of view, the Doi–Edwards model consists in a strong coupling between the Navier–Stokes equations and a highly nonlinear constitutive law. The aim of this article is to provide a rigorous proof of the well-posedness of the Doi–Edwards model, namely that it has a unique regular solution. We also prove, which is generally much more difficult for flows of viscoelastic type, that the solution is global in time in the two dimensional case, without any restriction on the smallness of the data.

Abstract:In this paper, we considered the isentropic Navier–Stokes equations for compressible fluids with density-dependent viscosities in R3. These systems come from the Boltzmann equations through the Chapman–Enskog expansion to the second order, cf. [17], and are degenerate when vacuum appears. We firstly establish the existence of the unique local regular solution (see Definition 1.1 or [11]) when the initial data are arbitrarily large with vacuum at least appearing in the far field. Moreover it is interesting to show that we couldn't obtain any global regular solution satisfying that the L∞ norm of u decays to zero as time t goes to infinity.

Abstract:In this article, we show that the recently studied compressible and incompressible models for viscoelastic fluids with infinite Weissenberg number can be well regarded as specific examples of general hyperbolic-parabolic systems studied by Shizuta and Kawashima. It will be seen that two physically motivated compatibility conditions compensate the breaking of the Kawashima condition. Thus, the global existences of classical small solutions near equilibrium can be easily proved by following the general framework.
Existence of vanishing physical viscosity solutions of characteristic initial-boundary value problems for systems of conservation laws

Abstract:We consider initial boundary-value problems for nonlinear systems of conservation laws in one space variable. It is known that in general different viscous mechanisms yield different solutions in the zero-viscosity limit. Here we focus on the most technically demanding case, known as boundary characteristic case, which occurs when one of the characteristic velocities of the system vanishes. We work in small total variation regimes and assume that every characteristic field is either genuinely nonlinear or linearly degenerate. We establish existence of admissible solutions satisfying a boundary condition consistent with the vanishing viscosity approximation given by a large class of physical (that is, mixed hyperbolic-parabolic) systems. In particular, our results apply to the zero-viscosity limit of the Navier-Stokes and viscous MHD equations, written in both Eulerian and Lagrangian coordinates. Our analysis relies on a fine boundary layers analysis and is based on the introduction of a new wave front-tracking algorithm. From the technical viewpoint, the most innovative elements are i) a new class of interaction estimates for boundary layers and boundary characteristic wave fronts hitting the boundary, which yields the introduction of a new Glimm-type functional; ii) a detailed analysis of the behavior of the wave front-tracking algorithm close to the boundary, which in turn yields relevant information on the limit.

Abstract:Long-time and large-data existence of weak solutions for initial- and boundary-value problems concerning three-dimensional flows of \emph{incompressible} fluids is nowadays available not only for Navier--Stokes fluids but also for various fluid models where the relation between the Cauchy stress tensor and the symmetric part of the velocity gradient is \emph{nonlinear}. The majority of such studies however concerns models where such a dependence is \emph{explicit} (the stress is a function of the velocity gradient), which makes the class of studied models unduly restrictive. The same concerns boundary conditions, or more precisely the slipping mechanisms on the boundary, where the no-slip is still the most preferred condition considered in the literature. Our main objective is to develop a robust mathematical theory for unsteady internal flows of \emph{implicitly constituted} incompressible fluids with implicit relations between the tangential projections of the velocity and the normal traction on the boundary. The theory covers numerous rheological models used in chemistry, biorheology, polymer and food industry as well as in geomechanics. It also includes, as special cases, nonlinear slip as well as stick-slip boundary conditions. Unlike earlier studies, the conditions characterizing admissible classes of constitutive equations are expressed by means of tools of elementary calculus. In addition, a fully constructive proof (approximation scheme) is incorporated. Finally, we focus on the question of uniqueness of such weak solutions.

Existence for the steady problem of a mixture of two power-law fluids

Abstract:The steady problem resulting from a mixture of two distinct fluids of power-law type is analyzed in this work. Mathematically, the problem results from the superposition of two power laws, one for a constant power-law index with other for a variable one. For the associated boundary-value problem, we prove the existence of very weak solutions, provided the variable power-law index is bounded from above by the constant one. This result requires the lowest possible assumptions on the variable power-law index and, as a particular case, extends the existence result by Ladyzhenskaya dated from 1969 to the case of a variable exponent and for all zones of the pseudoplastic region. In a distinct result, we extend a classical theorem on the existence of weak solutions to the case of our problem.

Discontinuous solutions for the Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity

Abstract:We prove existence of a unique global-in-time weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations that govern the motion of a compressible viscous fluid with density-dependent viscosity in two-dimensional space. The initial velocity belongs to the Sobolev space $H^1(\mathbb{R}^2)$, and the initial fluid density is $\alpha$-Hölder continuous on both sides of a $\mathscr{C}^{1+\alpha}$-regular interface with some geometrical assumption. We prove that this configuration persists over time: the initial interface is transported by the flow to an interface that maintains the same regularity as the initial one. Our result generalizes previous known of Hoff [21], Hoff and Santos [22] concerning the propagation of regularity for discontinuity surfaces by allowing more general nonlinear pressure law and density-dependent viscosity. Moreover, it supplements the work by Danchin, Fanelli and Paicu [6] with global-in-time well-posedness, even for density-dependent viscosity and we achieve uniqueness in a large space.

Abstract:We consider entire solutions $u$ of the equations describing the stationary flow of a generalized Newtonian fluid in 2D concentrating on the question, if a Liouville-type result holds in the sense that the boundedness of $u$ implies its constancy. A positive answer is true for $p$-fluids in the case $p>1$ (including the classical Navier-Stokes system for the choice $p=2$), and recently we established this Liouville property for the Prandtl-Eyring fluid model, for which the dissipative potential has nearly linear growth. Here we finally discuss the case of perfectly plastic fluids whose flow is governed by a von Mises-type stress-strain relation formally corresponding to the case $p=1$. it turns out that, for dissipative potentials of linear growth, the condition of $\mu$-ellipticity with exponent $\mu<2$ is sufficient for proving the Liouville theorem.

Abstract:The initial-boundary value problems describing motion of a two-dimensional viscoelastic ∞uid are investigated by using the methods of variational formulation and inequality estimates. Both the exponen- tial and power convergence of the solutions to a steady state solution of the viscoelastic ∞uid ∞ows are proved under prescribed conditions. The convergences to a stead state solution of the Navier-Stokes ∞ows is a special case of the results.
Global strong solutions for some differential viscoelastic models

Abstract:The purpose of this article is to show that there are many differential viscoelastic models for which the global existence of a regular solution is possible. Although the problem of global existence in the classic Oldroyd model is still open, we show that by adding a non-linear contribution (proposed by R.G. Larson in 1984), it is possible to obtain more regular and global solutions, regardless of the size of the data (in the two-dimensional and periodic case). Similarly, more complex appearance models such as those related to "pom-pom" polymers are interesting and mathematically richer: some "natural" bounds on the stress make it possible to obtain global results. On the other hand, in the last part, we show that other models clearly do not seem to fit into this framework, and do not even seem to have a global solution in time. These kinds of results allow to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of such or such viscoelastic fluid models. They can thus help rheologists and numericists to make choices with new arguments.

Abstract:We consider the Cauchy problem for incompressible viscoelastic fluids in the whole space $\mathbb{R}^d$ ($d=2,3$). By introducing a new decomposition via Helmholtz's projections, we first provide an alternative proof on the existence of global smooth solutions near equilibrium. Then under additional assumptions that the initial data belong to $L^1$ and their Fourier modes do not degenerate at low frequencies, we obtain the optimal $L^2$ decay rates for the global smooth solutions and their spatial derivatives. At last, we establish the weak-strong uniqueness property in the class of finite energy weak solutions for the incompressible viscoelastic system.

Abstract:We prove the existence of both local and global smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem in the whole space and the periodic problem in the n -dimensional torus for the incompressible viscoelastic system of Oldroyd-B type in the case of near- equilibrium initial data. The results hold in both two- and three-dimensional spaces. The results and methods presented in this paper are also valid for a wide range of elastic complex fluids, such as magnetohydrodynamics, liquid crystals, and mixture problems.
Existence, Smoothness and Uniqueness (in smooth space) of the Navier-Stokes equation by using a new Boundary Integral representation

Abstract:Consider an exterior space-time domain where the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation and continuity equation hold with no bodies or force fields present, and smooth velocity at initial time. This is equivalent to the velocity being impulsively instantaneously started into motion and further assume that this force impulse is bounded. A smooth solution with a Stokeslet far-field decay for all subsequent time is sought and found, demonstrating existence and smoothness. This is given by a space-time boundary integral velocity representation by a single layer potential linear distribution of Navier-Stokes fundamental solutions called NSlets. This is obtained by extending the theory of hydrodynamic potentials to also include a non-linear potential that subsequently drops out of the formulation. Zero initial velocity gives the null solution and so there can be only one smooth solution demonstrating uniqueness in smooth space, but this is not to say that there are not other possible solutions in the wider class of non-smooth spaces.

Abstract:In this paper we consider the local and global well-posedness to the density-dependent incompressible viscoelastic fluids. We first study some linear models associated to the incompressible viscoelastic system. Then we approximate the system by a sequence of ordinary differential equations, by means of the Friedrichs method. Some uniform estimates for those solutions will be obtained. Using compactness arguments, we will get the local existence up to extracting a subsequence by means of Ascoli's lemma. With the help of small data conditions and hybird Besov spaces, we finally derive the global existence.

Abstract:We consider the boundary-value problem for the steady isothermal flow of an incompressible viscoelastic liquid of Oldroyd type in a bounded domain with a Navier type slip boundary condition. We prove that under some restrictions on the material constants and the data, there exists a strong solution which is locally unique. The proof is based on a fixed point argument in which the boundary-value problem is decomposed into a transport equation and a Stokes system.

Abstract:In this paper,the author studies the free boundary problem for the one-dimensional compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity.The author proves the local (in time) existence and uniqueness result with discontinuous initial density.The important physical consequences of the result are that no vacuum states can occur in the interior of the gas,and the interface separating the gas and vacuum propagates with finite speed in local time, no matter how large the oscillation of the initial density.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a coupled system of pdes modelling the interaction between a two--dimensional incompressible viscous fluid and a one--dimensional elastic beam located on the upper part of the fluid domain boundary. We design a functional framework to define weak solutions in case of contact between the elastic beam and the bottom of the fluid cavity. We then prove that such solutions exist globally in time regardless a possible contact by approximating the beam equation by a damped beam and letting this additional viscosity vanish.

Abstract:Global existence for a system of nonlinear partial differential equations (PDE) modeling an isotropic incompressible viscoelastic material is proved. The structure of the PDE is derived through constitutive assumptions on the material. Restriction on the size of the initial displacement and velocity for the model is specified independent of the size of the viscosity of the material. The proof of global existence combines use of vector fields, local energy decay estimates, generalized Sobolev inequalities, and hyperbolic energy estimates.
