Abstract:An interesting question is whether the intrinsic complexity of the gliders in [Formula: see text]-dimensional cellular automata could be quantitatively analyzed in rigorously mathematical sense. In this paper, by introducing the [Formula: see text]-dimensional symbolic space, some fundamental dynamical properties of [Formula: see text]-dimensional shift map are explored in a subtle way. The purpose of this article is to present an accurate characterization of complex symbolic dynamics of gliders in Conway’s game of life. A series of dynamical properties of gliders on their concrete subsystems are investigated by means of the directed graph representation and transition matrix. More specifically, the gliders here are topologically mixing and possess the positive topological entropy on their subsystems. Finally, it is worth mentioning that the method presented in this paper is also applicable to other gliders in different [Formula: see text] dimensions.

Abstract:Conway's cellular automaton Game of LIFE has been conjectured to be a critical (or quasicritical) dynamical system. This criticality is generally seen as a continuous order-disorder transition in cellular automata (CA) rule space. LIFE's mean-field return map predicts an absorbing vacuum phase ($\rho=0$) and an active phase density, with $\rho=0.37$, which contrasts with LIFE's absorbing states in a square lattice, which have a stationary density $\rho_{2D} \approx 0.03$. Here, we study and classify mean-field maps for $6144$ outer-totalistic CA and compare them with the corresponding behavior found in the square lattice. We show that the single-site mean-field approach gives qualitative (and even quantitative) predictions for most of them. The transition region in rule space seems to correspond to a nonequilibrium discontinuous absorbing phase transition instead of a continuous order-disorder one. We claim that LIFE is a quasicritical nucleation process where vacuum phase domains invade the alive phase. Therefore, LIFE is not at the "border of chaos," but thrives on the "border of extinction."

Abstract:Game of Life is a simple and elegant model to study dynamical system over networks. The model consists of a graph where every vertex has one of two types, namely, dead or alive. A configuration is a mapping of the vertices to the types. An update rule describes how the type of a vertex is updated given the types of its neighbors. In every round, all vertices are updated synchronously, which leads to a configuration update. While in general, Game of Life allows a broad range of update rules, we focus on two simple families of update rules, namely, underpopulation and overpopulation, that model several interesting dynamics studied in the literature. In both settings, a dead vertex requires at least a desired number of live neighbors to become alive. For underpopulation (resp., overpopulation), a live vertex requires at least (resp. at most) a desired number of live neighbors to remain alive. We study the basic computation problems, e.g., configuration reachability, for these two families of rules. For underpopulation rules, we show that these problems can be solved in polynomial time, whereas for overpopulation rules they are PSPACE-complete.

Abstract:Cellular automatons and computer simulation games are widely used as heuristic devices in biology, to explore implications and consequences of specific theories. Conway's Game of Life has been widely used for this purpose. This game was designed to explore the evolution of ecological communities. We apply it to other biological processes, including symbiopoiesis. We show that Conway's organization of rules reflects the epigenetic principle, that genetic action and developmental processes are inseparable dimensions of a single biological system, analogous to the integration processes in symbiopoiesis. We look for similarities and differences between two epigenetic models, by Turing and Edelman, as they are realized in Game of Life objects. We show the value of computer simulations to experiment with and propose generalizations of broader scope with novel testable predictions. We use the game to explore issues in symbiopoiesis and evo-devo, where we explore a fractal hypothesis: that self-similarity exists at different levels (cells, organisms, ecological communities) as a result of homologous interactions of two as processes modeled in the Game of Life.

Abstract:Several modifications of the famous mathematical Game of Life are introduced by making Game of Life rules stochastic and mutual influence of cells in their 8-neighborhood on a rectangular lattice spatially non-uniform. Results are reported of experimental investigation of evolutionary dynamics of the introduced models. A number of new phenomena in the evolutionary dynamics of the models and collective behavior of patterns they generate are revealed, described and illustrated: formation of maze-like patterns as fixed points of the models, "self-controlled growth", "eternal life" in a bounded space and "coherent shrinkage".

Abstract:In 1952, Alan Turing who is considered as a father of Computer Science, based on his previous scientific research on the theory of computation, he emphasized how important is the analysis of pattern formation in nature and developed a theory. In his theory, he described specific patterns in nature that could be formed from basic chemical systems. Turing in his previous studies in the theory of computation, he had constantly worked on symmetrical patterns that could be formed simultaneously and realized the necessity for further analysis of pattern formation in biological problems. However, it was until the late 1960s, when John Conway was the first to introduce the "Game of Life", an innovative mathematical game based on cellular automata, having a purpose to utilize the fundamental entities, called as cells, in two possible states described as "dead" or "alive". This paper tries to contribute to a better understanding of the "Game of Life" by implementing algorithmic approaches of this problem in PASCAL and Python programming languages. Also, inside the paper numerous variations and extensions of the Conway's Game of Life are proposed that introduce new ideas and concepts. Furthermore, several machine learning algorithms to learn patterns from large sets of Game of Life simulations and generate new rules or strategies are described in detail.

Abstract:Life of Game is a typical cellular automata model.The research of its complexity provides the base for further application of cellular automata method.The evolutionary processes of all basic arrangements were studied to simulate Life of Game's complexity,and the periodic boundary conditional influence on the evolutionary process was analyzed.Five classifications of all basic arrangesments,including the disappeared,the fixed,the periodic,the mobile,and the discrete arrangesments,and four constituents of Life of game,including fifteen fixed constituents,two periodic constituents,sixteen mobile constituents and some peculiar constituents were shown in this paper.And it was also concluded that the evolvement processes of the mobile and the discrete arrangesments have been greatly affected by the periodic boundary condition.

Abstract:We present a new extension of Conway's game of life for two players, which we call p2life. P2life allows one of two types of token, black or white, to inhabit a cell, and adds competitive elements into the birth and survival rules of the original game. We solve the mean-field equation for p2life and determine by simulation that the asymptotic density of p2life approaches 0.0362.

Abstract:This paper presents a probabilistic extension of the well-known cellular automaton, Game of Life. In Game of Life, cells are placed in a grid and then watched as they evolve throughout subsequent generations, as dictated by the rules of the game. In our extension, called ProbLife, these rules now have probabilities associated with them. Instead of cells being either dead or alive, they are denoted by their chance to live. After presenting the rules of ProbLife and its underlying characteristics, we show a concrete implementation in ProbLog, a probabilistic logic programming system. We use this to generate different images, as a form of rule-based generative art.

Abstract:Conway's Game of Life is a two-dimensional cellular automaton. As a dynamical system, it is well-known to be computationally universal, i.e.\ capable of simulating an arbitrary Turing machine. We show that in a sense taking a single backwards step of Game of Life is a computationally universal process, by constructing patterns whose preimage computation encodes an arbitrary circuit-satisfaction problem, or (equivalently) any tiling problem. As a corollary, we obtain for example that the set of orphans is coNP-complete, exhibit a $6210 \times 37800$-periodic configuration that admits a preimage but no periodic one, and prove that the existence of a preimage for a periodic point is undecidable. Our constructions were obtained by a combination of computer searches and manual design.

Abstract:Cellular automata can simulate many complex physical phenomena using the power of simple rules. The presented methodological platform expresses the concept of programmable matter, of which Newton’s laws of motion are an example. Energy is introduced as the equivalent of the “Game of Life” mass, which can be treated as the first level of approximation. The temperature presence and propagation was calculated for various lattice topologies and boundary conditions, using the Shannon entropy measure. This study provides strong evidence that, despite the principle of mass and energy conservation not being fulfilled, the entropy, mass distribution, and temperature approach thermodynamic equilibrium. In addition, the described cellular automaton system transitions from a positive to a negative temperature, which stabilizes and can be treated as a signature of a system in equilibrium. The system dynamics is presented for a few species of cellular automata competing for maximum presence on a given lattice with different boundary conditions.

Abstract:Classical stochastic Conway Game of Life is expressed by the dissipative Schrödinger equation and dissipative tight-binding model. This is conducted at the prize of usage of time dependent anomalous non-Hermitian Hamiltonians as with occurrence of complex value potential that do not preserve the normalization of wave-function and thus allows for mimicking creationism or annihilationism of cellular automaton. Simply saying time-dependent complex value eigenenergies are similar to complex values of resonant frequencies in electromagnetic resonant cavities reflecting presence of dissipation that reflects energy leaving the system or being pumped into the system. At the same time various aspects of thermodynamics were observed in cellular automata that can be later reformulated by quantum mechanical pictures. The usage of Shannon entropy and mass equivalence to energy points definition of cellular automata temperature. Contrary to intuitive statement the system dynamical equilibrium is always reflected by negative temperatures. Diffusion of mass, energy and temperature as well as phase of proposed wave function is reported and can be directly linked with second thermodynamics law approximately valid for the system, where neither mass nor energy is conserved. The concept of complex-valued mass mimics wave-function behavior. Equivalence an anomalous second Fick law and dissipative Schrödinger equation is given. Dissipative Conway Game of Life tight-binding Hamiltonian is given using phenomenological justification.

Abstract:The design of complex self-organising systems producing life-like phenomena, such as the open-ended evolution of virtual creatures, is one of the main goals of artificial life. Lenia, a family of cellular automata (CA) generalizing Conway's Game of Life to continuous space, time and states, has attracted a lot of attention because of the wide diversity of self-organizing patterns it can generate. Among those, some spatially localized patterns (SLPs) resemble life-like artificial creatures and display complex behaviors. However, those creatures are found in only a small subspace of the Lenia parameter space and are not trivial to discover, necessitating advanced search algorithms. Furthermore, each of these creatures exist only in worlds governed by specific update rules and thus cannot interact in the same one. This paper proposes as mass-conservative extension of Lenia, called Flow Lenia, that solve both of these issues. We present experiments demonstrating its effectiveness in generating SLPs with complex behaviors and show that the update rule parameters can be optimized to generate SLPs showing behaviors of interest. Finally, we show that Flow Lenia enables the integration of the parameters of the CA update rules within the CA dynamics, making them dynamic and localized, allowing for multi-species simulations, with locally coherent update rules that define properties of the emerging creatures, and that can be mixed with neighbouring rules. We argue that this paves the way for the intrinsic evolution of self-organized artificial life forms within continuous CAs.

Abstract:In the theory of cellular automata, an oscillator is a pattern that repeats itself after a fixed number of generations; that number is called its period. A cellular automaton is called omniperiodic if there exist oscillators of all periods. At the turn of the millennium, only twelve oscillator periods remained to be found in Conway's Game of Life. The search has finally ended, with the discovery of oscillators having the final two periods, 19 and 41, proving that Life is omniperiodic. Besides filling in the missing periods, we give a detailed history of the omniperiodicity problem and the strategies used to solve it, summarising the work of a large number of people in the decades since the creation of Life.

Abstract:The Game of Life (GoL), one well known 2D cellular automaton, does not typically ensure interesting long-term phenotypic dynamics. Therefore, while being Turing complete, GoL cannot be said to be open-ended. In this work, we extend GoL with the opportunity for local mutations, thus enabling a heterogeneous life-like cellular automaton guided by an evolutionary inner loop. Additionally, we introduce the concept of cell ageing to ensure that cell aliveness (activated by inheritance with variation, and controlled by ageing) and actual cell computation (governed by life-like rules on local neighborhoods) are kept conceptually separated. We conduct an experimental campaign to identify suitable parameters that produce long-term phenotypic dynamics and favor genotypic innovations.

Abstract:Recent work with Lenia, a continuously-valued cellular automata (CA) framework, has yielded $\sim$100s of compelling, bioreminiscent and mobile patterns. Lenia can be viewed as a continuously-valued generalization of the Game of Life, a seminal cellular automaton developed by John Conway that exhibits complex and universal behavior based on simple birth and survival rules. Life's framework of totalistic CA based on the Moore neighborhood includes many other interesting, Life-like, CA. A simplification introduced in Lenia limits the types of Life-like CA that are expressible in Lenia to a specific subset. This work recovers the ability to easily implement any Life-like CA by splitting Lenia's growth function into genesis and persistence functions, analogous to Life's birth and survival rules. We demonstrate the capabilities of this new CA variant by implementing a puffer pattern from Life-like CA Morley/Move, and examine differences between related CA in Lenia and Glaberish frameworks: Hydrogeminium natans and s613, respectively. These CA exhibit marked differences in dynamics and character based on spatial entropy over time, and both support several persistent mobile patterns. The CA s613, implemented in the Glaberish framework, is more dynamic than the Hydrogeminium CA in terms of a consistently high variance in spatial entropy over time. These results suggest there may be a wide variety of interesting CA that can be implemented in the Glaberish variant of the Lenia framework, analogous to the many interesting Life-like CA outside of Conway's Life.
