Abstract:Folklore in complexity theory suspects that circuit lower bounds against $\mathbf{NC}^1$ or $\mathbf{P}/\operatorname{poly}$, currently out of reach, are a necessary step towards proving strong proof complexity lower bounds for systems like Frege or Extended Frege. Establishing such a connection formally, however, is already daunting, as it would imply the breakthrough separation $\mathbf{NEXP} \not\subseteq \mathbf{P}/\operatorname{poly}$, as recently observed by Pich and Santhanam (2023).

Abstract:We investigate the complexity of uniform OR circuits and AND circuits of polynomial-size and depth. As their name suggests, OR circuits have OR gates as their computation gates, as well as the usual input, output and constant (0/1) gates. As is the norm for Boolean circuits, our circuits have multiple sink gates, which implies that an OR circuit computes an OR function on some subset of its input variables. Determining that subset amounts to solving a number of reachability questions on a polynomial-size directed graph (which input gates are connected to the output gate?), taken from a very sparse set of graphs. However, it is not obvious whether or not this (restricted) reachability problem can be solved, by say, uniform AC^0 circuits (constant depth, polynomial-size, AND, OR, NOT gates). This is one reason why characterizing the power of these simple-looking circuits in terms of uniform classes turns out to be intriguing. Another is that the model itself seems particularly natural and worthy of study. Our goal is the systematic characterization of uniform polynomial-size OR circuits, and AND circuits, in terms of known uniform machine-based complexity classes. In particular, we consider the languages reducible to such uniform families of OR circuits, and AND circuits, under a variety of reduction types. We give upper and lower bounds on the computational power of these language classes. We find that these complexity classes are closely related to tallyNL, the set of unary languages within NL, and to sets reducible to tallyNL. Specifically, for a variety of types of reductions (many-one, conjunctive truth table, disjunctive truth table, truth table, Turing) we give characterizations of languages reducible to OR circuit classes in terms of languages reducible to tallyNL classes. Then, some of these OR classes are shown to coincide, and some are proven to be distinct. We give analogous results for AND circuits. Finally, for many of our OR circuit classes, and analogous AND circuit classes, we prove whether or not the two classes coincide, although we leave one such inclusion open.

On the Consistency of Circuit Lower Bounds for Non-Deterministic Time

Abstract:We prove the first unconditional consistency result for superpolynomial circuit lower bounds with a relatively strong theory of bounded arithmetic. Namely, we show that the theory V$^0_2$ is consistent with the conjecture that NEXP $\not\subseteq$ P/poly, i.e., some problem that is solvable in non-deterministic exponential time does not have polynomial size circuits. We suggest this is the best currently available evidence for the truth of the conjecture. The same techniques establish the same results with NEXP replaced by the class of problems that are decidable in non-deterministic barely superpolynomial time such as NTIME$(n^{O(\log\log\log n)})$. Additionally, we establish a magnification result on the hardness of proving circuit lower bounds.

Deriving Nonuniform Lower Bounds from Uniform Nondeterministic Lower Bounds

Abstract:Proving complexity lower bounds remains a challenging task: currently, we only know how to prove conditional uniform (algorithm) lower bounds and nonuniform (circuit) lower bounds in restricted circuit models. About a decade ago, Williams (STOC 2010) showed how to derive nonuniform lower bounds from uniform \emph{upper} bounds. Since then, a number of results of this kind have been proved. For example, Jahanjou et al. (ICALP 2015) and Carmosino et al. (ITCS 2016) proved that if NSETH fails, then $\text{E}^{\text{NP}}$ has circuit size $\omega(n)$. Just recently, it was shown how uniform \emph{lower} bounds can be used to derive nonuniform lower bounds: Belova et al. (SODA 2024) showed that if MAX-3-SAT cannot be solved in co-nondeterministic time $O(2^{(1 - \varepsilon)n})$, then there exists an explicit polynomial family of high arithmetic circuit size; Williams (FOCS 2024) showed that if NSETH is true, then Boolean Inner Product requires large $\text{ETHR} \circ \text{ETHR}$ circuits. In this paper, we continue developing this line of research and show that nondeterministic uniform lower bounds imply nonuniform lower bounds for various types of objects that are notoriously hard to analyze: circuits, matrix rigidity, and tensor rank. Specifically, we prove that if NSETH is true, then there exists a monotone Boolean function family in coNP of monotone circuit size $2^{\Omega(n / \log n)}$. Combining this with the result above, we get win-win circuit lower bounds: either $\text{E}^{\text{NP}}$ requires circuits of size $w(n)$ or coNP requires monotone circuits of size $2^{\Omega(n / \log n)}$. We also prove that MAX-3-SAT cannot be solved in co-nondeterministic time $O(2^{(1 - \varepsilon)n})$, then there exist small explicit families of high rigidity matrices and high rank tensors.

Circuit complexity and functionality: a thermodynamic perspective

Abstract:Circuit complexity, defined as the minimum circuit size required for implementing a particular Boolean computation, is a foundational concept in computer science. Determining circuit complexity is believed to be a hard computational problem [1]. Recently, in the context of black holes, circuit complexity has been promoted to a physical property, wherein the growth of complexity is reflected in the time evolution of the Einstein-Rosen bridge (``wormhole'') connecting the two sides of an AdS ``eternal'' black hole [2]. Here we explore another link between complexity and thermodynamics for circuits of given functionality, making the physics-inspired approach relevant to real computational problems, for which functionality is the key element of interest. In particular, our thermodynamic framework provides a new perspective on the obfuscation of programs of arbitrary length -- an important problem in cryptography -- as thermalization through recursive mixing of neighboring sections of a circuit, which can be viewed as the mixing of two containers with ``gases of gates''. This recursive process equilibrates the average complexity and leads to the saturation of the circuit entropy, while preserving functionality of the overall circuit. The thermodynamic arguments hinge on ergodicity in the space of circuits which we conjecture is limited to disconnected ergodic sectors due to fragmentation. The notion of fragmentation has important implications for the problem of circuit obfuscation as it implies that there are circuits with same size and functionality that cannot be connected via local moves. Furthermore, we argue that fragmentation is unavoidable unless the complexity classes NP and coNP coincide, a statement that implies the collapse of the polynomial hierarchy of computational complexity theory to its first level.

A proof complexity conjecture and the Incompleteness theorem

Abstract:Given a sound first-order p-time theory $T$ capable of formalizing syntax of first-order logic we define a p-time function $g_T$ that stretches all inputs by one bit and we use its properties to show that $T$ must be incomplete. We leave it as an open problem whether for some $T$ the range of $g_T$ intersects all infinite NP sets (i.e. whether it is a proof complexity generator hard for all proof systems). A propositional version of the construction shows that at least one of the following three statements is true: - there is no p-optimal propositional proof system (this is equivalent to the non-existence of a time-optimal propositional proof search algorithm), - $E \not\subseteq P/poly$, - there exists function $h$ that stretches all inputs by one bit, is computable in sub-exponential time and its range $Rng(h)$ intersects all infinite NP sets.

Nondeterministic Quasi-Polynomial Time is Average-Case Hard for [math] Circuits

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Computing, Ahead of Print. Following the seminal work of [R. R. Williams, J. ACM, 61 (2014)], in a recent breakthrough, [C. D. Murray and R. R. Williams, STOC 2018] proved that [math] (nondeterministic quasi-polynomial time) does not have polynomial-size [math] circuits (constant depth circuits consisting of [math]/[math]/[math] gates for a fixed constant [math], a frontier class in circuit complexity). We strengthen the above lower bound to an average-case one, by proving that for all constants [math], there is a language in [math] that cannot be [math]-approximated by polynomial-size [math] circuits. Our work also improves the average-case lower bound for [math] against polynomial-size [math] circuits by [R. Chen, I. C. Oliveira, and R. Santhanam, LATIN 2018, pp. 317–330]. Our new lower bound builds on several interesting components, including the following: 1. Barrington's theorem and the existence of an [math]-complete language that is random self-reducible. 2. The subexponential witness-size lower bound for [math] against [math] and the conditional nondeterministic pseudorandom generator (PRG) construction in [R. R. Williams, SIAM J. Comput., 45 (2016), pp. 497–529]. 3. An "almost" almost-everywhere [math] average-case lower bound (which strengthens the corresponding worst-case lower bound in [C. D. Murray and R. R. Williams, STOC 2018]). 4. A [math]-complete language that is downward self-reducible, same-length checkable, error-correctable, and paddable. Moreover, all its reducibility properties have corresponding low-depth nonadaptive oracle circuits. Our construction builds on [L. Trevisan and S. P. Vadhan, Comput. Complexity, 16 (2007), pp. 331–364]. Like other lower bounds proved via the "algorithmic approach," the only property of [math] exploited by us is the existence of a nontrivial [math] algorithm for [math] [R. R. Williams, J. ACM, 61 (2014)]. Therefore, for any typical circuit class [math], our results apply to [math] as well if a nontrivial [math] (in fact, [math]) algorithm for [math] is discovered.

Hardness of Sparse Sets and Minimal Circuit Size Problem

Abstract:We develop a polynomial method on finite fields to amplify the hardness of spare sets in nondeterministic time complexity classes on a randomized streaming model. One of our results shows that if there exists a $2^{n^{o(1)}}$-sparse set in $NTIME(2^{n^{o(1)}})$ that does not have any randomized streaming algorithm with $n^{o(1)}$ updating time, and $n^{o(1)}$ space, then $NEXP\not=BPP$, where a $f(n)$-sparse set is a language that has at most $f(n)$ strings of length $n$. We also show that if MCSP is $ZPP$-hard under polynomial time truth-table reductions, then $EXP\not=ZPP$.

Abstract:In this paper we investigate the complexity-theoretical aspects of cyclic and non-wellfounded proofs in the context of parsimonious logic, a variant of linear logic where the exponential modality ! is interpreted as a constructor for streams over finite data. We present non-wellfounded parsimonious proof systems capturing the classes $\mathbf{FPTIME}$ and $\mathbf{FP}/\mathsf{poly}$. Soundness is established via a polynomial modulus of continuity for continuous cut-elimination. Completeness relies on an encoding of polynomial Turing machines with advice.

Abstract:Nonuniformity is a central concept in computational complexity with powerful connections to circuit complexity and randomness. Nonuniform reductions have been used to study the isomorphism conjecture for NP and completeness for larger complexity classes. We study the power of nonuniform reductions for NP-completeness, obtaining both separations and upper bounds for nonuniform completeness vs uniform completeness in NP. Under various hypotheses, we obtain the following separations: 1. There is a set complete for NP under nonuniform many-one reductions, but not under uniform many-one reductions. This is true even with a single bit of nonuniform advice. 2. There is a set complete for NP under nonuniform many-one reductions with polynomial-size advice, but not under uniform Turing reductions. That is, polynomial nonuniformity is stronger than a polynomial number of queries. 3. For any fixed polynomial p(n), there is a set complete for NP under uniform 2-truth-table reductions, but not under nonuniform many-one reductions that use p(n) advice. That is, giving a uniform reduction a second query makes it more powerful than a nonuniform reduction with fixed polynomial advice. 4. There is a set complete for NP under nonuniform many-one reductions with polynomial advice, but not under nonuniform many-one reductions with logarithmic advice. This hierarchy theorem also holds for other reducibilities, such as truth-table and Turing. We also consider uniform upper bounds on nonuniform completeness. Hirahara (2015) showed that unconditionally every set that is complete for NP under nonuniform truth-table reductions that use logarithmic advice is also uniformly Turing-complete. We show that under a derandomization hypothesis, the same statement for truth-table reductions and truth-table completeness also holds.

The Computational Complexity of Circuit Discovery for Inner Interpretability

Abstract:Many proposed applications of neural networks in machine learning, cognitive/brain science, and society hinge on the feasibility of inner interpretability via circuit discovery. This calls for empirical and theoretical explorations of viable algorithmic options. Despite advances in the design and testing of heuristics, there are concerns about their scalability and faithfulness at a time when we lack understanding of the complexity properties of the problems they are deployed to solve. To address this, we study circuit discovery with classical and parameterized computational complexity theory: (1) we describe a conceptual scaffolding to reason about circuit finding queries in terms of affordances for description, explanation, prediction and control; (2) we formalize a comprehensive set of queries that capture mechanistic explanation, and propose a formal framework for their analysis; (3) we use it to settle the complexity of many query variants and relaxations of practical interest on multi-layer perceptrons (part of, e.g., transformers). Our findings reveal a challenging complexity landscape. Many queries are intractable (NP-hard, $\Sigma^p_2$-hard), remain fixed-parameter intractable (W[1]-hard) when constraining model/circuit features (e.g., depth), and are inapproximable under additive, multiplicative, and probabilistic approximation schemes. To navigate this landscape, we prove there exist transformations to tackle some of these hard problems (NP- vs. $\Sigma^p_2$-complete) with better-understood heuristics, and prove the tractability (PTIME) or fixed-parameter tractability (FPT) of more modest queries which retain useful affordances. This framework allows us to understand the scope and limits of interpretability queries, explore viable options, and compare their resource demands among existing and future architectures.

Abstract:This was submitted as a final project for CS254B, taught by Li Yang Tan and Tom Knowles. The field of Circuit Complexity utilises careful analysis of Boolean Circuit Functions in order to extract meaningful information about a range of complexity classes. In particular, the complexity class $P / \text{Poly}$ has played a central role in much of the historical attempts to tackle the problem of whether solution and verification are equivalent i.e. the central $P$ versus $NP$ problem. Whilst circuits can potentially be easier to analyse than Turing Machines due to their non-uniform nature of computation (program size is allowed to depend on the input size), it is notoriously hard to establish lower bounds for them. In this report, we will touch upon several results published by Hastad, Sipser and Razborov that will highlight a dynamic interplay between circuit complexity and many of the central ideas of modern-day complexity theory, and in particular the central importance of Hastad's Switching Lemma.

Bounded-Depth Frege Lower Bounds for Random 3-CNFs via Deterministic Restrictions

Abstract:A major open problem in proof complexity is to demonstrate that random 3-CNFs with a linear number of clauses require super-polynomial size refutations in bounded-depth Frege systems. We take the first step towards addressing this question by establishing a super-linear lower bound: for every $k$, there exists $\epsilon_k > 0$ such that any depth-$k$ Frege refutation of a random $n$-variable 3-CNF with $\Theta(n)$ clauses has $\Omega(n^{1 + \epsilon_k})$ steps w.h.p. Our proof involves a novel adaptation of the deterministic restriction technique introduced by Chaudhuri and Radhakrishnan (STOC'96). For a given formula, this technique provides a method to fix a small number of variables in a bottom-up manner, ensuring that every surviving gate has small fan-in. Consequently, the resulting formula depends on a limited number of variables and can be simplified to a constant by a small variable assignment. Adapting this approach to proof complexity requires addressing the usual challenges associated with maintaining the hardness of a given instance. To this end, we introduce the following generalizations of standard proof complexity tools: - Weak expanders: These bipartite graphs relax the classical notion of expansion by only requiring that small sets have a non-empty boundary, while intermediate-sized sets have a large boundary. This property is sufficient to preserve hardness (e.g., for resolution width) and is easier to maintain as we remove vertices from the graph. - Formula assignments: To simplify a Frege proof, we consider a generalization of partial restrictions that assign values to formulas instead of just variables. We treat these assignments as new axioms added to our formula, as they generally cannot be expressed as variable substitutions.

Symmetric Exponential Time Requires Near-Maximum Circuit Size: Simplified, Truly Uniform

Abstract:In a recent breakthrough, Chen, Hirahara and Ren prove that $\mathsf{S_2E}/_1 \not\subset \mathsf{SIZE}[2^n/n]$ by giving a single-valued $\mathsf{FS_2P}$ algorithm for the Range Avoidance Problem ($\mathsf{Avoid}$) that works for infinitely many input size $n$. Building on their work, we present a simple single-valued $\mathsf{FS_2P}$ algorithm for $\mathsf{Avoid}$ that works for all input size $n$. As a result, we obtain the circuit lower bound $\mathsf{S_2E} \not\subset {i.o.}$-$\mathsf{SIZE}[2^n/n]$ and many other corollaries: 1. Almost-everywhere near-maximum circuit lower bound for $\mathsf{\Sigma_2E} \cap \mathsf{\Pi_2E}$ and $\mathsf{ZPE}^{\mathsf{NP}}$. 2. Pseudodeterministic $\mathsf{FZPP}^{\mathsf{NP}}$ constructions for: Ramsey graphs, rigid matrices, pseudorandom generators, two-source extractors, linear codes, hard truth tables, and $K^{poly}$-random strings.

Interactive quantum advantage with noisy, shallow Clifford circuits

Abstract:Recent work by Bravyi et al. constructs a relation problem that a noisy constant-depth quantum circuit (QNC$^0$) can solve with near certainty (probability $1 - o(1)$), but that any bounded fan-in constant-depth classical circuit (NC$^0$) fails with some constant probability. We show that this robustness to noise can be achieved in the other low-depth quantum/classical circuit separations in this area. In particular, we show a general strategy for adding noise tolerance to the interactive protocols of Grier and Schaeffer. As a consequence, we obtain an unconditional separation between noisy QNC$^0$ circuits and AC$^0[p]$ circuits for all primes $p \geq 2$, and a conditional separation between noisy QNC$^0$ circuits and log-space classical machines under a plausible complexity-theoretic conjecture. A key component of this reduction is showing average-case hardness for the classical simulation tasks -- that is, showing that a classical simulation of the quantum interactive task is still powerful even if it is allowed to err with constant probability over a uniformly random input. We show that is true even for quantum tasks which are $\oplus$L-hard to simulate. To do this, we borrow techniques from randomized encodings used in cryptography.

Bounded Nondeterminism and Alternation in Parameterized Complexity Theory

Abstract:We give machine characterisations and logical descriptions of a number of parameterized complexity classes. The focus of our attention is the class W[P], which we characterise as the class of all parameterized problems decidable by a nondeterministic fixed-parameter tractable algorithm, whose use of nondeterminism is bounded in terms of the parameter. We give similar characterisations for AW[P], the "alternating version of W[P]", and various other parameterized complexity classes. We also give logical characterisations of the classes W[P] and AW[P] in terms of fragments of least fixed-point logic, thereby putting these two classes into a uniform framework that we have developed in earlier work. Furthermore, we investigate the relation between alternation and space in parameterized complexity theory. We prove that the compact Turing machine computation problem, shown to be hard for the class AW[SAT] in (K. A. Abrahamson et al., 1995) is complete for the class uniform-XNL.
Learning Constant-Depth Circuits in Malicious Noise Models

Abstract:The seminal work of Linial, Mansour, and Nisan gave a quasipolynomial-time algorithm for learning constant-depth circuits ($\mathsf{AC}^0$) with respect to the uniform distribution on the hypercube. Extending their algorithm to the setting of malicious noise, where both covariates and labels can be adversarially corrupted, has remained open. Here we achieve such a result, inspired by recent work on learning with distribution shift. Our running time essentially matches their algorithm, which is known to be optimal assuming various cryptographic primitives. Our proof uses a simple outlier-removal method combined with Braverman's theorem for fooling constant-depth circuits. We attain the best possible dependence on the noise rate and succeed in the harshest possible noise model (i.e., contamination or so-called "nasty noise").

Incompressibility and spectral gaps of random circuits

Abstract:Random reversible and quantum circuits form random walks on the alternating group $\mathrm{Alt}(2^n)$ and unitary group $\mathrm{SU}(2^n)$, respectively. Known bounds on the spectral gap for the $t$-th moment of these random walks have inverse-polynomial dependence in both $n$ and $t$. We prove that the gap for random reversible circuits is $\Omega(n^{-3})$ for all $t\geq 1$, and the gap for random quantum circuits is $\Omega(n^{-3})$ for $t \leq \Theta(2^{n/2})$. These gaps are independent of $t$ in the respective regimes. We can further improve both gaps to $n^{-1}/\mathrm{polylog}(n, t)$ for $t\leq 2^{\Theta(n)}$, which is tight up to polylog factors. Our spectral gap results have a number of consequences: 1) Random reversible circuits with $\mathcal{O}(n^4 t)$ gates form multiplicative-error $t$-wise independent (even) permutations for all $t\geq 1$; for $t \leq \Theta(2^{n/6.1})$, we show that $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(n^2 t)$ gates suffice. 2) Random quantum circuits with $\mathcal{O}(n^4 t)$ gates form multiplicative-error unitary $t$-designs for $t \leq \Theta(2^{n/2})$; for $t\leq \Theta(2^{2n/5})$, we show that $\tilde{\mathcal{O}}(n^2t)$ gates suffice. 3) The robust quantum circuit complexity of random circuits grows linearly for an exponentially long time, proving the robust Brown--Susskind conjecture [BS18,BCHJ+21]. Our spectral gap bounds are proven by reducing random quantum circuits to a more structured walk: a modification of the ``$\mathrm{PFC}$ ensemble'' from [MPSY24] together with an expander on the alternating group due to Kassabov [Kas07a], for which we give an efficient implementation using reversible circuits. In our reduction, we approximate the structured walk with local random circuits without losing the gap, which uses tools from the study of frustration-free Hamiltonians.

Abstract:We prove that if conditions I-II (below) hold and there is a sequence of Boolean functions $f_n$ hard to approximate by p-size circuits such that p-size circuit lower bounds for $f_n$ do not have p-size proofs in Extended Frege system EF, then $P\ne NP$. I. $S^1_2$ proves that a concrete function in ${\sf E}$ is hard to approximate by subexponential-size circuits. II. [Learning from $\neg\exists$ OWF.] $S^1_2$ proves that a p-time reduction transforms circuits breaking one-way functions to p-size circuits learning p-size circuits over the uniform distribution, with membership queries. Here, $S^1_2$ is Buss's theory of bounded arithmetic formalizing p-time reasoning. Further, we show that any of the following assumptions implies that $P\ne NP$, if EF is not p-bounded: 1. [Feasible anticheckers.] $S^1_2$ proves that a p-time function generates anticheckers for SAT. 2. [Witnessing $NP\not\subseteq P/poly$.] $S^1_2$ proves that a p-time function witnesses an error of each p-size circuit which fails to solve SAT. 3. [OWF from $NP\not\subseteq P/poly$ $\&$ hardness of ${\sf E}$.] Condition I holds and $S^1_2$ proves that a p-time reduction transforms circuits breaking one-way functions to p-size circuits computing SAT. The results generalize to stronger theories and proof systems.
