Abstract:The stress response of amorphous polymers exhibits tremendous change during the glass transition region, from soft viscoelastic response to stiff viscoplastic response. In order to describe the temperature-dependent and rate dependent stress response of amorphous polymers, we extend the one-dimensional small strain fractional Zener model to the three-dimensional finite deformation model. The Eyring model is adopted to represent the stress activated viscous flow. A phenomenological evolution equation of yield strength is used to describe the strain softening behaviors. We demonstrate that the stress response predicted by the three-dimensional model is consistent with that of one-dimensional model under uniaxial deformation, which confirms the validity of the extension. The model is then applied to describe the stress response of an amorphous thermoset at various temperatures and strain rates, which shows good agreement between experiments and simulation. We further perform a parameter study to investigate the influence of the model parameters on the stress response. The results show that a smaller fractional order results in a larger yield strain while has little effect on the yield stress when the temperature is below the glass transition temperature. For the stress relaxation tests, a smaller fractional order leads to a slower relaxation rate.
Unravelling Physical Origin of the Bauschinger Effect in Glassy Polymers

Abstract:Pre-deformed glassy polymers exhibit distinct stress responses with opposite loading directions, referred to as the Bauschinger effect. Although this phenomenon has been known for decades, the underlying microscopic origin remains largely elusive. In this work, we perform coarse-grained molecular dynamics (CGMD) tension and compression simulations on a typical glassy polymer polycarbonate. The intermedia variables of self-entanglement and network orientation are extracted to describe the internal microstructure change during deformation. The results show that the competition between intra-chain deformation and inter-chain friction leads to the occurrence of yielding, while strain hardening is governed by the increase of inter-chain friction. Motived by the physical mechanisms revealed by the CGMD simulations, we further develop a mean-field shear transformation zone (STZ) model which contains the crucial internal variable of self-entanglement. The theoretical model well captures the yielding, strain hardening and the Bauschinger effect observed in MD simulations. By comparing the mechanical responses of the polycarbonates under tension and compression, we contribute the substantial Bauschinger effect to the distinct deformation mechanisms in these loading processes. The increase in yield strength during tensile-reloading is governed by the decrease of self-entanglement, which leads to enhanced inter-chain friction, while the decreased yield strength during compressive-reloading is associated with the increase of self-entanglement, causing reduced inter-chain friction. Overall, this work promotes the fundamental understanding of the complex mechanical responses of glassy polymers and also provides a new continuum-level theoretical framework for amorphous solids.

Abstract:A theoretical investigation on the effect of anti-site point defects on mechanical and thermodynamic properties of MgZn2 and MgCu2 based on the first-principles calculations has been implemented. The results show that Mg anti-site defect on Zn or Cu site plays a reinforcing role, while exhibiting a more brittle behavior. However, the defect phase of Cu anti-sites on Mg sublattice shows a ductile tendency. The temperature-dependent thermodynamic properties are also predicted along with Debye-Grüneisen model including Debye temperature, thermal expansion coefficient and vibrational heat capacity as well as vibrational entropy. Taking into account the contribution of the lattice vibration and thermal electronic excitations, the Helmholtz free energy F can be calculated, suggests that anti-site defects caused by the occupancy of Mg at the Zn or Cu site are thermodynamically unstable compared to the defect-free phases. In addition, the total amount of charge transfer, the overall and the local difference charge densities are further discussed to analyze the mechanism of mechanical properties.

Abstract:A thermodynamically consistent constitutive model of metallic glass is presented by extending the infinitesimal deformation model of Huang et al. [Huang, R., Suo, Z., Prevost, J. H., and Nix,W. D., 2002.Inhomogeneous deformation in metallic glasses,J. Mech. Phys. Solids, 40, 1011–1027] to finite deformation. The underlying theory behind the model is the free volume theory with free volume concentration as the order parameter affected through the processes of diffusion, annihilation and creation. The main assumptions of the model include multiplicative decomposition of deformation gradient and additive decomposition of free energy. The former comprises of elastic, inelastic dilatational component associated with excess free volume concentration and isochoric plastic part while the latter consists of contributions from elastic deformation and free volume concentration. The plastic part evolves according to Mises-theory and the local free volume concentration. Homogeneous simple shear is the model problem solved using the present model and compared with the infinitesimal deformation theory to examine the effect of large deformation on stresses in metallic glasses.
Revealing the atomistic mechanisms of strain glass transition in ferroelastics

Abstract:<p>As a new ferroelastic state, strain glass, has attracted a lot of recent attentions and, most importantly, strain glass transitions (SGTs) could underpin many phenomena that have puzzled the physics community for decades, including the quasi-linear superelasticity and Invar and Elinvar anomalies. However, there has been a lack of fundamental understanding at the atomistic level beyond the phenomenological Landau theory. In this paper, we propose a way to obtain quantitatively the continuous strain/stress fields distribution caused by doped point defects through molecular statics calculations by incorporating a Gaussian probability distribution function. By using the quantitative strain/stress fields distribution to inform phase field simulations, we reproduce quantitatively the experimentally observed critical defect concentrations separating the normal martensitic phase transition from strain glass transition at different temperatures and critical temperatures for spontaneous strain glass to martensitic transition at different defect concentrations. Based on percolation theory, we demonstrate how the strain network created by point defects with a critical concentration regulates nucleation and growth of martensitic domains, suppresses autocatalysis by strain frustration, and changes the sharp first-order martensitic transformation into a continuous SGT. A general temperature- and defect-concentration-dependent percolation criterion is formulated for accurate prediction of SGT, which could enable high throughput computations for systematic search of new strain glass systems using simply molecular static calculations.</p>

Defect model for the mixed mobile ion effect revisited: an importance of deformation rates

Abstract:The progress in understanding the behavior of glassy mixed ionic conductors within the concept of the defect model for the mixed mobile ion effect (V. Belostotsky, J. Non-Cryst. Solids 353 (2007) 1078) is reported. It is shown that in a mixed ionic conductor (e.g., mixed alkali glass) containing two or more types of dissimilar mobile ions of unequal size sufficient local strain arising from the size mismatch of a mobile ion entering a foreign site can not be, in principle, absorbed by the surrounding network-forming matrix without its damage. Primary site rearrangement occurs immediately, on the time scale close to that of the ion migration process, through the formation of intrinsic defects in the nearest glass network. Neither anelastic relaxation below glass transition temperature, Tg, nor viscoelastic or viscous behavior at or above Tg can be expected being observed in this case because the character of the stress relaxation in a wide temperature range is dictated above all by the deformation rates employed locally to the adjacent network-forming matrix. Since the ion migration occurs on the picosecond time scale, the primary rearrangement of the glass network adjacent to an ionic site occurs at rates orders of magnitude higher than those of the critical minimum values, so the matrix demonstrates brittle-elastic response to the arising strain even at temperatures well above Tg, which explains, among other things, why mixed alkali effect is observable in glass melts.

Deformation Behavior of Metallic Glasses with Shear Band Like Atomic Structure: a Molecular Dynamics Study.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to investigate the plastic deformation within the shear bands in three different metallic glasses (MGs). To mimic shear bands, MG specimens were first deformed until flow localization occurs, and then the volume of the material within the localized regions was extracted and replicated. Homogeneous deformation that is independent of the size of the specimen was observed in specimens with shear band like structure, even at a temperature that is far below the glass transition temperature. Structural relaxation and rapid cooling were employed to examine the effect of free volume content on the deformation behavior. This was followed by detailed atomic structure analyses, employing the concepts of Voronoi polyhedra and "liquid-like" regions that contain high fraction of sub-atomic size open volumes. Results suggest that the total fraction of atoms in liquid-like regions is a key parameter that controls the plastic deformation in MGs. These are discussed in the context of reported experimental results and possible strategies for synthesizing monolithic amorphous materials that can accommodate large tensile plasticity are suggested.

Abstract:Despite numerous studies on the atomic structures of Cu-Zr metallic glasses (MGs), their inherent structural ordering, e.g., medium-range order (MRO), remains difficult to describe. Specifically lacking is an understanding of how the MRO responds to deformation and the associated changes in atomic mobility. In this paper, we focus on the impact of deformation on MRO and associated effect on diffusion in a well-relaxed Cu64.5Zr35.5 MG by molecular dynamics simulations. The Cu-Zr MG exhibits a larger elastic limit of 0.035 and a yield stress of 3.5 GPa. The cluster alignment method was employed to characterize the icosahedral short-range order (ISRO) and Bergman-type medium-range order (BMRO) in the models upon loading and unloading. From this analysis, we find the disruption of both ISRO and BMRO occurs as the strain reaches about 0.02, well below the elastic limit. Within the elastic limit, the total fractions of ISRO or BMRO can be fully recovered upon unloading. The diffusivity increases six to eight times in regions undergoing plastic deformation, which is due to the dramatic disruption of the ISRO and BMRO. By mapping the spatial distributions of the mobile atoms, we demonstrate the increase in atomic mobility is due to the extended regions of disrupted ISRO and more importantly BMRO.

Abstract:A nanoscale kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) model is developed to study the deformation behavior of metallic glasses (MGs). The shear transformation zone (STZ) is adopted as our fundamental deformation unit and each nanoscale volume element (similar to 1 nm voxel) in the MG is considered as a potential STZ that may undergo inelastic rearrangements sampled from a randomized catalog that varies from element to element, with stress-dependent activation energies. The inelastic transformation sampled out of spatially randomized catalogs (a key characteristic of glass) is then treated as an Eshelby's inclusion and the induced elastic field is solved in the Fourier space using the spectral method. The distinct features of our model, compared to previous work, are the introduction of randomized event catalogs for different nanoscale volume elements, repeated operations within the same element, and a "generation-dependent" softening term to reflect the internal structural change after each deformation. Simulations of uniaxial tension show the important effect of softening on the formation of shear bands, with a size-independent thickness of 18 nm. Statistical analysis of the accumulated strain at the similar to 1 nm voxel level is carried out and sample size effect on the extreme value statistics is discussed. (c) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The atomic theory of elasticity of amorphous solids, based on the nonaffine response formalism, is extended into the nonlinear stress-strain regime by coupling with the underlying irreversible many-body dynamics. The latter is implemented in compact analytical form using a qualitative method for the many-body Smoluchowski equation. The resulting nonlinear stress-strain (constitutive) relation is very simple, with few fitting parameters, yet contains all the microscopic physics. The theory is successfully tested against experimental data on metallic glasses, and it is able to reproduce the ubiquitous feature of stress-strain overshoot upon varying temperature and shear rate. A clear atomic-level interpretation is provided for the stress overshoot, in terms of the competition between the elastic instability caused by nonaffine deformation of the glassy cage and the stress buildup due to viscous dissipation.

Abstract:Initial condition dependence is the key to understanding the difference between ideal strength and actual strength of both crystalline and amorphous materials. Besides intrinsic structural heterogeneities in metallic glasses (MGs), a class of “extended defects” based on the “connected atomistic free volume” (CAFV) is proposed to define the microstructure (initial condition), which is crucial to understanding the strength. To explore these concepts and theories, deformation of finite-sized MG samples with different populations of pre-existing extended defects (damages) are simulated using a nanometer-scale shear transformation zone (STZ) model based on microelasticity and the kinetic Monte Carlo method. A “smaller is stronger” effect on the peak stress of simulated true stress–strain curves is seen in samples with pre-existing damage introduced as post-activated STZ clusters. Samples with “chemically contaminated” surface STZs also exhibit a size effect on the peak stress, and depending on whether the surface STZs are softer or harder than the bulk STZs, smaller can be either weaker or stronger.

Abstract:Shear is a basic deformation mode governing yielding, plasticity and fracture in metallic solids. For amorphous metals, due to various constraints, little work is available in addressing directly shear deformation and shear-induced mechanical property changes which are vital to the mechanistic understanding of this new class of disordered materials. Here, by using a finite deformation theory, we examine the pure shear deformation in a bulk metallic glass in a large range of shear strains. With the continuum approach, we show systematically for the first time the detailed shear deformation behaviours, shear-induced normal stress and strain relations, softening in the elastic constants, volume dilatation and free energy change induced by the shear deformation. These results point to two major consequences from the shear deformation, one is the mechanical degradations and the other material degradation which is responsible for the changes in the mechanical properties of the disordered materials.

Abstract:We reproduced the simulations described in Wang et al [J. Non-Cryst. Sol., 498 (2018) 294-304] and found we could not obtain the results reported. The root cause was identified to be incorrect atom masses in the original simulation files. As a consequence, the potential does not reproduce the experimental glass density -- and presumably, other structural properties -- and should be considered with great caution.

Abstract:It has been shown both experimentally and by computer simulations that stress-carrying defects can change a normal sharp first-order martensitic transformation (MT) to a continuous strain glass transition in ferroelastic systems and offer unique properties. However, strain glass state has been found only in limited ferroelastic systems with relatively small transformatoin strains such as the trigonal phase (1%) in NiTi-based alloys and the orthorhombic phase (2%) in TiNb-based alloys by means of impurity doping. We show in this paper that there exists a critical value of defect strength relative to the strength of MTs for creating a strain glass state. Using a typical strain glass system, Ti48.5Ni51.5 with symmetrical anti-site defects, as an example, we show that the equivalent Von Mises strain caused by anti-site defect with randomly distribution (with 3% concentration) is 7/8.9 times of that created by the stress free transformation strain of Martensitic phase in order to produce an R/B19 strain glass state respectively. The maximum interaction energy between the anti-site defects and the martensitic variant is estimated to be 16 times larger than that between different martensitic variants at this defect concentration. This finding may shed light on developing new strain glasses of much larger transformation strains for broader applications through defect engineering.
