Abstract:We investigate the $\mathbb{T}^2$-quotient of a torsion free $Spin(7)$-structure on an $8$-manifold under the assumption that the quotient $6$-manifold is Kähler. We show that there exists either a Hamiltonian $S^1$ or $\mathbb{T}^2$ action on the quotient preserving the complex structure. Performing a Kähler reduction in each case reduces the problem of finding $Spin(7)$ metrics to studying a system of PDEs on either a $4$- or $2$-manifold with trivial canonical bundle, which in the compact case corresponds to either $\mathbb{T}^4$, a K3 surface or an elliptic curve. By reversing this construction we give infinitely many new explicit examples of $Spin(7)$ holonomy metrics. In the simplest case, our result can be viewed as an extension of the Gibbons-Hawking ansatz.

Abstract:Recently Freed and Hopkins [11] proved that there is no parity anomaly in M-theory on pin(+) manifolds in the low-energy field theory approximation, and they also developed an algebraic theory of cubic forms. Earlier Witten [33] proved the anomaly cancellation for spin manifolds by introducing the E-8-bundle technique. Motivated by the cubic forms and the anomaly cancellation formulas of Witten-Freed-Hopkins, we give some new cubic forms on spin, spinc(e), spin(omega 2) and orientable 12-manifolds respectively. We relate them to eta-invariants when the manifolds are with boundary, and mod 2 indices on 10 dimensional characteristic submanifolds when the manifolds are spinc or spin(omega 2). Our method of producing these cubic forms is a combination of (generalized) Witten classes and the character of the basic representation of affine E-8. (C) 2021 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:We characterize the set of all conformal Spin(7) forms on an oriented and spin Riemannian eight-manifold $(M,g)$ as solutions to a homogeneous algebraic equation of degree two for the self-dual four-forms of $(M,g)$. When $M$ is compact, we use this result to construct a functional whose self-dual critical set is precisely the set of all Spin(7) structures on $M$. Furthermore, the natural coupling of this potential to the Einstein-Hilbert action gives a functional whose self-dual critical points are conformally Ricci-flat Spin(7) structures. Our proof relies on the computation of the square of an irreducible and chiral real spinor as a section of a bundle of real algebraic varieties sitting inside the Kähler-Atiyah bundle of $(M,g)$.

Abstract:This paper investigates the geometric structures and properties of 8-dimensional manifolds with Spin(7)-holonomy. We focus on the characterization and implications of 4-planes within these manifolds, which are endowed with an almost symplectic structure compatible with the Spin(7)-structure. We provide a detailed analysis of the differential forms defining these structures, including the Cayley 4-form and its stabilization under the Spin(7) group actions. Furthermore, we explore the concept of mirror duality within the context of exceptional holonomy, elucidating the relationship between dual structures and their topological constraints. By examining the conditions under which mirror duality arises, we enhance the understanding of the interplay between Spin(7)-structures and symplectic geometry. This endeavor contributes to our deeper understanding of the intricate symmetries and topological properties of these remarkable manifolds.

Abstract:We derive the explicit formula for the intrinsic torsion of a ${\rm Spin}(7)$-structure on a $8$--dimensional Riemannian manifold $M$. Here, the intrinsic torsion is a difference of the minimal ${\rm Spin}(7)$--connection and the Levi-Civita connection. Hence it is a a section of a bundle $T^{\ast}M\otimes\mathfrak{spin}^{\bot}(M)$. The formula relates the intrinsic torsion with the Lee form $\theta$ and $\Lambda^3_{48}$--component $(\delta\Phi)_{48}$ of a codifferential $\delta\Phi$ of the $4$--form defining a given structure. Using the formula obtained, we compute the condition for a ${\rm Spin}(7)$ structure of type $\mathcal{W}_8$ to be (second order) nearly parallel. Moreover, applying the divergence formula obtained by the author for general Riemannian $G$--structure in another article, we rediscover the well known formula for the scalar curvature in terms of norms of $\theta$, $(\delta\Phi)_{48}$ and the divergence ${\rm div}\theta$. We justify the formula on appropriate examples.

Abstract:We construct new explicit metrics on complete non-compact Riemannian 8-manifolds with holonomy Spin(7). One manifold, which we denote by A_8, is topologically R^8 and another, which we denote by B_8, is the bundle of chiral spinors over $S^4$. Unlike the previously-known complete non-compact metric of Spin(7) holonomy, which was also defined on the bundle of chiral spinors over S^4, our new metrics are asymptotically locally conical (ALC): near infinity they approach a circle bundle with fibres of constant length over a cone whose base is the squashed Einstein metric on CP^3. We construct the covariantly-constant spinor and calibrating 4-form. We also obtain an L^2-normalisable harmonic 4-form for the A_8 manifold, and two such 4-forms (of opposite dualities) for the B_8 manifold. We use the metrics to construct new supersymmetric brane solutions in M-theory and string theory. In particular, we construct resolved fractional M2-branes involving the use of the L^2 harmonic 4-forms, and show that for each manifold there is a supersymmetric example. An intriguing feature of the new A_8 and B_8 Spin(7) metrics is that they are actually the same local solution, with the two different complete manifolds corresponding to taking the radial coordinate to be either positive or negative. We make a comparison with the Taub-NUT and Taub-BOLT metrics, which by contrast do not have special holonomy. In an appendix we construct the general solution of our first-order equations for Spin(7) holonomy, and obtain further regular metrics that are complete on manifolds B^+_8 and B^-_8 similar to B_8.
Complete non-compact $\operatorname{Spin}(7)$-manifolds from $T^2$-bundles over AC Calabi Yau manifolds

Abstract:We develop a new construction of complete non-compact 8-manifolds with Riemannian holonomy equal to $\operatorname{Spin}(7)$. As a consequence of the holonomy reduction, these manifolds are Ricci-flat. These metrics are built on the total spaces of principal $T^2$-bundles over asymptotically conical Calabi Yau manifolds. The resulting metrics have a new geometry at infinity that we call asymptotically $T^2$-fibred conical ($AT^2C$) and which generalizes to higher dimensions the ALG metrics of 4-dimensional hyperkähler geometry, analogously to how ALC metrics generalize ALF metrics. As an application of this construction, we produce infinitely many diffeomorphism types of $AT^2C$ $\operatorname{Spin}(7)$-manifolds and the first known example of complete toric $\operatorname{Spin}(7)$-manifold.

Abstract:M-theory on compact eight-manifolds with $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-holonomy is a framework for geometric engineering of 3d $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories coupled to gravity. We propose a new construction of such $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-manifolds, based on a generalized connected sum, where the building blocks are a Calabi-Yau four-fold and a $G_2$-holonomy manifold times a circle, respectively, which both asymptote to a Calabi-Yau three-fold times a cylinder. The generalized connected sum construction is first exemplified for Joyce orbifolds, and is then used to construct examples of new compact manifolds with $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-holonomy. In instances when there is a K3-fibration of the $\mathrm{Spin}(7)$-manifold, we test the spectra using duality to heterotic on a $T^3$-fibered $G_2$-holonomy manifold, which are shown to be precisely the recently discovered twisted-connected sum constructions.

One such metric, which we denote by A8, is complete and non-singular on R8. The other complete metrics are defined on manifolds with the topology of the bundle of chiral spinors over S4, and are denoted by B8+, B8− and B8. The metrics on B8+ and B8− occur in families with a non-trivial parameter. The metric on B8 arises for a limiting value of this parameter, and locally this metric is the same as the one for A8. Abstract:By constructing concrete complex-oriented maps we show that the eight-fold of the generator of the third integral cohomology of the spin groups Spin(7) and Spin(8) is in the image of the Thom morphism from complex cobordism to singular cohomology, while the generator itself is not in the image. We thereby give a geometric construction for a nontrivial class in the kernel of the differential Thom morphism of Hopkins and Singer for the Lie groups Spin(7) and Spin(8). The construction exploits the special symmetries of the octonions.

Abstract:In this paper, we extend the study of generalized Killing spinors on Riemannian Spin$^c$ manifolds started by Moroianu and Herzlich to complex Killing functions. We prove that such spinor fields are always real Spin$^c$ Killing spinors or imaginary generalized Spin$^c$ Killing spinors, providing that the dimension of the manifold is greater or equal to 4. Moreover, we classify Riemannian Spin$^c$ manifolds carrying imaginary and imaginary generalized Killing spinors.

Abstract:We investigate the geometry of holomorphic vector bundles $E$ over a Riemann surface $C$ together with a section of the endomorphism bundle tensored with $K^{1/2}$ -- a square root of the canonical bundle $K$. These parallel to some extent the various features of usual Higgs bundles, such as spectral curve constructions, but some features are radically different. We make essential use of the mod 2 index to distinguish two families of moduli spaces, and provide examples in low genus.

Abstract:We study the twistor equation on pseudo-Riemannian $Spin^c-$manifolds whose solutions we call charged conformal Killing spinors (CCKS). We derive several integrability conditions for the existence of CCKS and study their relations to spinor bilinears. A construction principle for Lorentzian manifolds admitting CCKS with nontrivial charge starting from CR-geometry is presented. We obtain a partial classification result in the Lorentzian case under the additional assumption that the associated Dirac current is normal conformal and complete the Classification of manifolds admitting CCKS in all dimensions and signatures $\leq 5$ which has recently been initiated in the study of supersymmetric field theories on curved space.

On the Stability of Riemannian Manifold with Parallel Spinors

Abstract:Inspired by the recent work of Physicists Hertog-Horowitz-Maeda, we prove two stability results for compact Riemannian manifolds with nonzero parallel spinors. Our first result says that Ricci flat metrics which also admits nonzero parallel spinors are stable (in the direction of changes in conformal structures) as the critical points of the total scalar curvature functional. In fact, we show that the Lichnerowicz Laplacian, which governs the second variation, is the square of a twisted Dirac operator. Our second result, which is a local version of the first one, shows that any metrics of positive scalar curvature cannot lie too close to a metric with nonzero parallel spinor. We also prove a rigidity result for special holonomy metrics. In the case of $SU(m)$ holonomy, the rigidity result implies that scalar flat deformations of Calabi-Yau metric must be Calabi-Yau. Finally we explore the connection with positive mass theorem, which presents another approach to proving these stability and rigidity results.

Abstract:We consider spaces M-7 and M-8 of G(2) holonomy and Spin(7) holonomy in seven and eight dimensions, with a U(1) isometry. For metrics where the length of the associated circle is everywhere finite and non-zero, one can perform a Kaluza-Klein reduction of supersymmetric M-theory solutions (Minkowski)(4) x M-7 or (Minkowski)(3) x M-8, to give supersymmetric solutions (Minkowski)(4) x Y-6 or (Minkowski)(3) x Y-7 in type IIA string theory with a non-singular dilaton. We study the associated six- and seven-dimensional spaces Y-6 and Y-7 perturbatively in the regime where the string coupling is weak but still non-zero, for which the metrics remain Ricci-flat but that they no longer have special holonomy, at the linearised level. In fact they have "almost special holonomy", which for the case of Y-6 means almost Kahler, together with a further condition. For Y-7 we are led to introduce the notion of an "almost G(2) manifold", for which the associative 3-form is closed but not co-closed. We obtain explicit classes of non-singular metrics of almost special holonomy, associated with the near Gromov-Hausdorff limits of families of complete non-singular G(2) and Spin(7) metrics. Abstract:Spinorial methods have proven to be a powerful tool to study geometric properties of spin manifolds. Our aim is to continue the spinorial study of manifolds that are not necessarily spin. We introduce and study the notion of $G$-invariance of spin$^r$ structures on a manifold $M$ equipped with an action of a Lie group $G$. For the case when $M$ is a homogeneous $G$-space, we prove a classification result of these invariant structures in terms of the isotropy representation. As an example, we study the invariant spin$^r$ structures for all the homogeneous realisations of the spheres.
