Abstract:The main result of this article is sub-additivity of the dp-rank. We also show that the study of theories of finite dp-rank can not be reduced to the study of its dp-minimal types, and discuss the possible relations between dp-rank and VC-density.

Abstract:The article is concerned with the problem of additivity of the tensor rank. That is, for two independent tensors, we study when the rank of their direct sum is equal to the sum of their individual ranks. The statement saying that additivity always holds was previously known as Strassen's conjecture (1969) until Shitov proposed counterexamples (2019). They are not explicit and only known to exist asymptotically for very large tensor spaces. In this article, we present families of pairs of small three-way tensors for which the additivity holds. For instance, over the base field C , it is the case if both tensors are of rank less or equal 7. This proves that a pair of 2×2 matrix multiplication tensors has the rank additivity property. We show also that the Alexeev-Forbes-Tsimerman substitution method preserves the structure of a direct sum of tensors.

Abstract:Abstract The subrank of a tensor measures how much a tensor can be diagonalized. We determine this parameter precisely for essentially all (i.e., generic) tensors. Namely, we prove for generic tensors in with that the subrank is . Our result significantly improves on the previous upper bound from the work of Strassen (1991) and Bürgisser (1990) which was . Our result is tight up to an additive constant. Our full result covers not only 3‐tensors but also ‐tensors, for which we find that the generic subrank is . Moreover, as an application, we prove that the subrank is not additive under the direct sum. As a consequence of our result, we obtain several large separations between the subrank and tensor methods that have received much interest recently, notably the slice rank (Tao, 2016), analytic rank (Gowers–Wolf, 2011; Lovett, 2018; Bhrushundi–Harsha–Hatami–Kopparty–Kumar, 2020), geometric rank (Kopparty–Moshkovitz–Zuiddam, 2020), and G‐stable rank (Derksen, 2020). Our proofs of the lower bounds rely on a new technical result about an optimal decomposition of tensor space into structured subspaces, which we think may be of independent interest.

Abstract:Motivated by general probability theory, we say that the set $X$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ is \emph{antipodal of rank $k$}, if for any $k+1$ elements $q_1,\ldots q_{k+1}\in X$, there is an affine map from $\mathrm{conv} X$ to the $k$-dimensional simplex $\Delta_k$ that maps $q_1,\ldots q_{k+1}$ onto the $k+1$ vertices of $\Delta_k$. For $k=1$, it coincides with the well-studied notion of (pairwise) antipodality introduced by Klee. We consider the following natural generalization of Klee's problem on antipodal sets: What is the maximum size of an antipodal set of rank $k$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$? We present a geometric characterization of antipodal sets of rank $k$ and adapting the argument of Danzer and Grünbaum originally developed for the $k=1$ case, we prove an upper bound which is exponential in the dimension. We point out that this problem can be connected to a classical question in computer science on finding perfect hashes, and it provides a lower bound on the maximum size, which is also exponential in the dimension.

Discreteness of asymptotic tensor ranks

Abstract:Tensor parameters that are amortized or regularized over large tensor powers, often called "asymptotic" tensor parameters, play a central role in several areas including algebraic complexity theory (constructing fast matrix multiplication algorithms), quantum information (entanglement cost and distillable entanglement), and additive combinatorics (bounds on cap sets, sunflower-free sets, etc.). Examples are the asymptotic tensor rank, asymptotic slice rank and asymptotic subrank. Recent works (Costa-Dalai, Blatter-Draisma-Rupniewski, Christandl-Gesmundo-Zuiddam) have investigated notions of discreteness (no accumulation points) or "gaps" in the values of such tensor parameters. We prove a general discreteness theorem for asymptotic tensor parameters of order-three tensors and use this to prove that (1) over any finite field (and in fact any finite set of coefficients in any field), the asymptotic subrank and the asymptotic slice rank have no accumulation points, and (2) over the complex numbers, the asymptotic slice rank has no accumulation points. Central to our approach are two new general lower bounds on the asymptotic subrank of tensors, which measures how much a tensor can be diagonalized. The first lower bound says that the asymptotic subrank of any concise three-tensor is at least the cube-root of the smallest dimension. The second lower bound says that any concise three-tensor that is "narrow enough" (has one dimension much smaller than the other two) has maximal asymptotic subrank. Our proofs rely on new lower bounds on the maximum rank in matrix subspaces that are obtained by slicing a three-tensor in the three different directions. We prove that for any concise tensor, the product of any two such maximum ranks must be large, and as a consequence there are always two distinct directions with large max-rank.

Abstract:We study the rank of the adjacency matrix A of a random Erdős‐Rényi graph G∼G(n,p). It is well known that when p=(log(n)−ω(1))/n , with high probability, A is singular. We prove that when p=ω(1/n) , with high probability, the corank of A is equal to the number of isolated vertices remaining in G after the Karp‐Sipser leaf‐removal process, which removes vertices of degree one and their unique neighbor. We prove a similar result for the random matrix B , where all entries are independent Bernoulli random variables with parameter p . Namely, we show that if H is the bipartite graph with bi‐adjacency matrix B , then the corank of B is with high probability equal to the max of the number of left isolated vertices and the number of right isolated vertices remaining after the Karp‐Sipser leaf‐removal process on H . Additionally, we show that with high probability, the k ‐core of G(n,p) is full rank for any k≥3 and p=ω(1/n) . This partially resolves a conjecture of Van Vu for p=ω(1/n) . Finally, we give an application of the techniques in this paper to gradient coding, a problem in distributed computing.

Abstract:We determine the rank of a random matrix over an arbitrary field with prescribed numbers of non-zero entries in each row and column. As an application we obtain a formula for the rate of low-density parity check codes. This formula vindicates a conjecture of Lelarge (2013). The proofs are based on coupling arguments and a novel random perturbation, applicable to any matrix, that diminishes the number of short linear relations.

$r$-Minimal Codes with Respect to Rank Metric

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and study $r$-minimal codes, a natural extension of minimal codes which have been extensively studied with respect to Hamming metric, rank metric and sum-rank metric. We first propose $r$-minimal codes in a general setting where the ambient space is a finite dimensional left module over a division ring and is supported on a lattice. We characterize minimal subcodes and $r$-minimal codes, derive a general singleton bound, and give existence results for $r$-minimal codes by using combinatorial arguments. We then consider $r$-minimal rank metric codes over a field extension $\mathbb{E}/\mathbb{F}$ of degree $m$, where $\mathbb{E}$ can be infinite. We characterize these codes in terms of cutting $r$-blocking sets, generalized rank weights of the codes and those of the dual codes, and classify codes whose $r$-dimensional subcodes have constant rank support weight. Next, with the help of the evasiveness property of cutting $r$-blocking sets and some upper bounds for the dimensions of evasive subspaces, we derive several lower and upper bounds for the minimal length of $r$-minimal codes. Furthermore, when $\mathbb{E}$ is finite, we establish a general upper bound which generalizes and improves the counterpart for minimal codes in the literature. As a corollary, we show that if $m=3$, then for any $k\geqslant2$, the minimal length of $k$-dimensional minimal codes is equal to $2k$. To the best of our knowledge, when $m\geqslant3$, there was no known explicit formula for the minimal length of $k$-dimensional minimal codes for arbitrary $k$ in the literature.

Abstract:Motivated by problems in algebraic complexity theory (e.g., matrix multiplication) and extremal combinatorics (e.g., the cap set problem and the sunflower problem), we introduce the geometric rank as a new tool in the study of tensors and hypergraphs. We prove that the geometric rank is an upper bound on the subrank of tensors and the independence number of hypergraphs. We prove that the geometric rank is smaller than the slice rank of Tao, and relate geometric rank to the analytic rank of Gowers and Wolf in an asymptotic fashion. As a first application, we use geometric rank to prove a tight upper bound on the (border) subrank of the matrix multiplication tensors, matching Strassen's well-known lower bound from 1987.

Abstract:Let $p_n$ denote the largest possible cp-rank of an $n\times n$ completely positive matrix. This matrix parameter has its significance both in theory and applications, as it sheds light on the geometry and structure of the solution set of hard optimization problems in their completely positive formulation. Known bounds for $p_n$ are $s_n=\binom{n+1}2-4$, the current best upper bound, and the Drew--Johnson--Loewy (DJL) lower bound $d_n=\lfloor\frac{n^2}4\rfloor$. The famous DJL conjecture (1994) states that $p_n=d_n$. Here we show $p_n=\frac {n^2}2 +{\mathcal O}(n^{3/2}) = 2d_n+{\mathcal O}(n^{3/2}){{p_n=\frac {n^2}2 +{\mathcal O}(n^{3/2}) = 2d_n+{\mathcal O}(n^{3/2})}}$, and construct counterexamples to the DJL conjecture for all $n\ge {12}$ (for orders seven through eleven counterexamples were already given in [I. M. Bomze, W. Schachinger, and R. Ullrich, Linear Algebra Appl., 459 (2014), pp. 208--221].

On the subadditivity of generalized Kodaira dimensions

Abstract:The goals of this paper are of two aspects. Firstly, we introduce the notion of generalized numerical Kodaira dimension with multiplier ideal sheaf and establish the subadditivity inequalities in terms of this notion, which can be used to give an analytic proof of O. Fujino's result on the subadditivity of the log Kodaira dimensions. Secondly, motivated by Zhou-Zhu's subadditivity of generalized Kodaira dimensions, we adopt another definition of generalized Kodaira dimension with multiplier ideal sheaf and show they are equal by using Okounkov bodies. As one application, we show that the superadditivity part in Zhou-Zhu's setting also holds true. As another application, we give an alternative proof of Zhou-Zhu's subadditivity formula, in the case when the singular metric $h_L$ has analytic singularities, by using generalized Iitaka fibrations.

On approximating the rank of graph divisors

Abstract:Baker and Norine initiated the study of graph divisors as a graph-theoretic analogue of the Riemann-Roch theory for Riemann surfaces. One of the key concepts of graph divisor theory is the {\it rank} of a divisor on a graph. The importance of the rank is well illustrated by Baker's {\it Specialization lemma}, stating that the dimension of a linear system can only go up under specialization from curves to graphs, leading to a fruitful interaction between divisors on graphs and curves. Due to its decisive role, determining the rank is a central problem in graph divisor theory. Kiss and Tóthméresz reformulated the problem using chip-firing games, and showed that computing the rank of a divisor on a graph is NP-hard via reduction from the Minimum Feedback Arc Set problem. In this paper, we strengthen their result by establishing a connection between chip-firing games and the Minimum Target Set Selection problem. As a corollary, we show that the rank is difficult to approximate to within a factor of $O(2^{\log^{1-\varepsilon}n})$ for any $\varepsilon > 0$ unless $P=NP$. Furthermore, assuming the Planted Dense Subgraph Conjecture, the rank is difficult to approximate to within a factor of $O(n^{1/4-\varepsilon})$ for any $\varepsilon>0$.

Abstract:The main purpose of this paper is to further study the structure, parameters and constructions of the recently introduced minimal codes in the sum-rank metric. These objects form a bridge between the classical minimal codes in the Hamming metric, the subject of intense research over the past three decades partly because of their cryptographic properties, and the more recent rank-metric minimal codes. We prove some bounds on their parameters, existence results, and, via a tool that we name geometric dual, we manage to construct minimal codes with few weights. A generalization of the celebrated Ashikhmin-Barg condition is proved and used to ensure minimality of certain constructions.

Abstract:Let $ {\mathbf k} $ be a field and $Q\in {\mathbf k}[x_1, \ldots, x_s]$ a form (homogeneous polynomial) of degree $d>1.$ The ${\mathbf k}$-Schmidt rank $rk_{\mathbf k}(Q)$ of $Q$ is the minimal $r$ such that $Q= \sum_{i=1}^r R_iS_i$ with $R_i, S_i \in {\mathbf k}[x_1, \ldots, x_s]$ forms of degree $<d$. When $ {\mathbf k} $ is algebraically closed, this rank is essentially equivalent to the codimension in $ {\mathbf k}^s $ of the singular locus of the variety defined by $ Q, $ known also as the Birch rank of $ Q. $ When $ {\mathbf k} $ is a number field, a finite field or a function field, we give polynomial bounds for $ rk_{\mathbf k}(Q) $ in terms of $ rk_{\bar {\mathbf k}} (Q) $ where $ \bar {\mathbf k} $ is the algebraic closure of $ {\mathbf k}. $ Prior to this work no such bound (even ineffective) was known for $d>4$. This result has immediate consequences for counting integer points (when $ {\mathbf k} $ is a number field) or prime points (when $ {\mathbf k} = \mathbb Q $) of the variety $ \{Q=0\} $ assuming $ rk_{\mathbf k} (Q) $ is large.

Abstract:We introduce a new concept of rank – relative rank associated to a filtered collection of polynomials. When the filtration is trivial, our relative rank coincides with Schmidt rank (also called strength). We also introduce the notion of relative bias. The main result of the paper is a relation between these two quantities over finite fields (as a special case, we obtain a new proof of the results in [21]). This relation allows us to get an accurate estimate for the number of points on an affine variety given by a collection of polynomials which is of high relative rank (Lemma 3.2). The key advantage of relative rank is that it allows one to perform an efficient regularization procedure which is polynomial in the initial number of polynomials (the regularization process with Schmidt rank is far worse than tower exponential). The main result allows us to replace Schmidt rank with relative rank in many key applications in combinatorics, algebraic geometry, and algebra. For example, we prove that any collection of polynomials of degrees in a polynomial ring over an algebraically closed field of characteristic is contained in an ideal , generated by a collection of polynomials of degrees which form a regular sequence, and is of size , where is independent of the number of variables.

Theory Ser. A, 192 (2022), 105658], we will exhibit a new class of codes with parameters [math] for infinite values of [math] and [math] odd. Moreover, by studying the geometric structures of these scattered subspaces, we determine the rank weight distribution of the associated codes.

On the rank varieties of some simple modules for symmetric groups

Abstract:In the previous work, Lim and the author determined the rank variety of the simple $\mathbb{F}\mathfrak{S}_{kp}$-module $D(p-1)=D^{(kp-p+1,1^{p-1})}$ with respect to some maximal elementary abelian $p$-subgroup $E_k$ and the complexity when $k\not\equiv 1\pmod p$ and $p$ is odd. Their method relied on the dimension of the module, which is dependent on $k$. In this paper, we extend this result to the case for any $k\geq 2$, and determine the rank variety of $D(p-1)$ and its complexity, providing a proof independent of $k$.

A Gap in the Subrank of Tensors

Abstract:The subrank of tensors is a measure of how much a tensor can be ''diagonalized''. This parameter was introduced by Strassen to study fast matrix multiplication algorithms in algebraic complexity theory and is closely related to many central tensor parameters (e.g. slice rank, partition rank, analytic rank, geometric rank, G-stable rank) and problems in combinatorics, computer science and quantum information theory. Strassen (J. Reine Angew. Math., 1988) proved that there is a gap in the subrank when taking large powers under the tensor product: either the subrank of all powers is at most one, or it grows as a power of a constant strictly larger than one. In this paper, we precisely determine this constant for tensors of any order. Additionally, for tensors of order three, we prove that there is a second gap in the possible rates of growth. Our results strengthen the recent work of Costa and Dalai (J. Comb. Theory, Ser. A, 2021), who proved a similar gap for the slice rank. Our theorem on the subrank has wider applications by implying such gaps not only for the slice rank, but for any ``normalized monotone''. In order to prove the main result, we characterize when a tensor has a very structured tensor (the W-tensor) in its orbit closure. Our methods include degenerations in Grassmanians, which may be of independent interest.
