Abstract:Consider a discrete-time quantum walk on the $N$-cycle governed by the following condition: at every time step of the walk, the option persists, with probability $p$, of exercising a projective measurement on the coin degree of freedom. For a bipartite quantum system of this kind, we prove that the von Neumann entropy of the total density operator converges to its maximum value. Thus, when influenced by decoherence, the mutual information between the two subsystems, corresponding respectively to the space of the coin and the space of the walker, eventually must diminish to zero. To put it plainly, any level of decoherence greater than zero forces the system eventually to become completely "disentangled".}

Coined Quantum Walk on a Quantum Network

Abstract:We explore a discrete-time, coined quantum walk on a quantum network where the coherent superposition of walker-moves originates from the unitary interaction of the walker-coin with the qubit degrees of freedom in the quantum network. The walk dynamics leads to a growth of entanglement between the walker and the network on one hand, and on the other, between the network-qubits among themselves. The initial entanglement among the network qubits plays a crucial role in determining the asymptotic values of these entanglement measures and the quantum walk statistics. Specifically, the entanglement entropy of the walker-network state and the negativity of the quantum network-qubit state saturate to values increasing with the initial network-entanglement. The asymptotic time-averaged walker-position probability distribution shows increasing localization around the initial walker-position with higher initial network entanglement. A potential application of these results as a characterisation tool for quantum network properties is suggested.

The impact of varying the topological phase on these quantities is discussed.

Non-uniform Mixing of Quantum Walks on the Symmetric Group

Abstract:It is well-known that classical random walks on regular graphs converge to the uniform distribution. Quantum walks, in their various forms, are quantizations of their corresponding classical random walk processes. Gerhardt and Watrous (2003) demonstrated that continuous-time quantum walks do not converge to the uniform distribution on certain Cayley graphs of the Symmetric group, which by definition are all regular. In this paper, we demonstrate that discrete-time quantum walks, in the sense of quantized Markov chains as introduced by Szegedy (2004), also do not converge to the uniform distribution. We analyze the spectra of the Szegedy walk operators using the representation theory of the symmetric group. In the discrete setting, the analysis is complicated by the fact that we work within a Hilbert space of a higher dimension than the continuous case, spanned by pairs of vertices. Our techniques are general, and we believe they can be applied to derive similar analytical results for other non-commutative groups using the characters of their irreducible representation.

Abstract:We analyze the quantum walk in higher spatial dimensions and compare classical and quantum spreading as a function of time. Tensor products of Hadamard transformations and the discrete Fourier transform arise as natural extensions of the quantum coin toss in the one-dimensional walk simulation, and other illustrative transformations are also investigated. We find that entanglement between the dimensions serves to reduce the rate of spread of the quantum walk. The classical limit is obtained by introducing a random phase variable.

Abstract:We consider an special dynamics of a quantum walk (QW) on a line. Initially, the walker localized at the origin of the line with arbitrary chirality, evolves to an asymptotic stationary state. In this stationary state a measurement is performed and the state resulting from this measurement is used to start a second QW evolution to achieve a second asymptotic stationary state. In previous works, we developed the thermodynamics associated with the entanglement between the coin and position degrees of freedom in the QW. Here we study the application of the first and second laws of thermodynamics to the process between the two stationary states mentioned above. We show that: i) the entropy change has upper and lower bounds that are obtained analytically as a function of the initial conditions. ii) the energy change is associated to a heat-transfer process.

Abstract:Recently, an interesting model featuring a modified conditional shift operator (which causes nonlinearity by dependence on the local occupation probability of the quantum walker) in discrete-time quantum walks has been introduced. In this model, where a few curious dynamical behaviors like solitonlike propagation, self-trapping and chaos have been found, the problem of quantum entanglement of resulting walker-coin system has not been considered. Utilizing numerical simulations in the present work, we investigate the time dependence of entanglement entropy, a measure of quantum entanglement, for the walker-coin system in this model. It appears that for all values of the nonlinearity parameter characterizing this model, there exists a time above which the entanglement entropy is very close to unity. Usually, after relatively small number of time steps from the beginning, the entanglement entropy becomes significant. This is associated with the creation of two solitons moving away from zero in opposite directions. Moreover, as we show in the present work, the so-called soliton formation time is closely connected with the time for which very high quantum entanglement appears for the first time during the evolution of the walker-coin system.

Abstract:Quantum walks, mathematical models referred to as the quantum counterparts of random walks, have garnered significant attention in recent years with the advancement of quantum computing. The weak limit theorem for quantum walks, analogous to the central limit theorem for random walks, is one of the most important theorems in this field. In this study, we investigated the weak limit theorem for a two-state discrete-time quantum walk on a two-dimensional square lattice. As a result, we derived a two-dimensional probability distribution whose support is the intersection of two ellipses. The probability distribution we obtained resembles the distribution of one-dimensional quantum walks while possessing a unique form specific to two dimensions.

Abstract:The decoherence matrix studied by Gudder and Sorkin (2011) can be considered as a map from the set of all the pairs of $n$-length paths to complex numbers, which is induced by the discrete-time quantum walk. The decoherence matrix is one of the decoherence functionals which present their historical quantum measure theory. In this paper, we compute the von Neumann entropy of the decoherence matrix. To do so, we use the result that the eigensystem of the decoherence matrix can be expressed by a corresponding correlated random walk.

Abstract:A quantum walk is the quantum analogue of a random walk. While it is relatively well understood how quantum walks can speed up random walk hitting times, it is a long-standing open question to what extent quantum walks can speed up the spreading or mixing rate of random walks on graphs. In this expository paper, inspired by a blog post by Terence Tao, we describe a particular perspective on this question that derives quantum walks from the discrete wave equation on graphs. This yields a description of the quantum walk dynamics as simply applying a Chebyshev polynomial to the random walk transition matrix. This perspective decouples the problem from its quantum origin, and highlights connections to earlier (non-quantum) work and the use of Chebyshev polynomials in random walk theory as in the Varopoulos-Carne bound. We illustrate the approach by proving a weak limit of the quantum walk dynamics on the lattice. This gives a different proof of the quadratically improved spreading behavior of quantum walks on lattices.

Abstract:We discuss spreading estimates for dynamical systems given by the iteration of an extended CMV matrix. Using a connection due to Cantero--Grünbaum--Moral--Velázquez, this enables us to study spreading rates for quantum walks in one spatial dimension. We prove several general results which establish quantitative upper and lower bounds on the spreading of a quantum walk in terms of estimates on a pair of associated matrix cocycles. To demonstrate the power and utility of these methods, we apply them to several concrete cases of interest. In the case where the coins are distributed according to an element of the Fibonacci subshift, we are able to rather completely describe the dynamics in a particular asymptotic regime. As a pleasant consequence, this supplies the first concrete example of a quantum walk with anomalous transport, to the best of our knowldege. We also prove ballistic transport for a quantum walk whose coins are periodically distributed.

Abstract:The aim of this article is to relate the discrete quantum walk on $\mathbb{Z}$ with the continuous Schrödinger operator on $\mathbb{R}$ in the scattering problem. Each point of $\mathbb{Z}$ is associated with a barrier of the potential, and the coin operator of the quantum walk is determined by the transfer matrix between bases of WKB solutions on the classically allowed regions of both sides of the barrier. This correspondence enables us to represent each entry of the scattering matrix of the Schrödinger operator as a countable sum of probability amplitudes associated with the paths of the quantum walker. In particular, the barrier-top scattering corresponds to the Hadamard walk in the semiclassical limit.

Abstract:Through introducing discrete-time quantum walks on the infinite line and on circles, we present a kind of two-particle interacting quantum walk which has two kinds of interactions. We investigate the characteristics of this kind of quantum walk and the time evolution of the two particles. Then we put forward a kind of quantum Hash scheme based on two-particle interacting quantum walks and discuss their feasibility and security. The security of this kind of quantum Hash scheme relies on the infinite possibilities of the initial state rather than the algorithmic complexity of hard problems, which will greatly enhance the security of the Hash schemes.

Abstract:The one dimensional quantum walk of anyonic systems is presented. The anyonic walker performs braiding operations with stationary anyons of the same type ordered canonically on the line of the walk. Abelian as well as non-Abelian anyons are studied and it is shown that they have very different properties. Abelian anyonic walks demonstrate the expected quadratic quantum speedup. Non-Abelian anyonic walks are much more subtle. The exponential increase of the system's Hilbert space and the particular statistical evolution of non-Abelian anyons give a variety of new behaviors. The position distribution of the walker is related to Jones polynomials, topological invariants of the links created by the anyonic world-lines during the walk. Several examples such as the SU(2) level k and the quantum double models are considered that provide insight to the rich diffusion properties of anyons.

Unitary and Open Scattering Quantum Walks on Graphs

Abstract:We study a class of Unitary Quantum Walks on arbitrary graphs, parameterized by a family of scattering matrices. These Scattering Quantum Walks model the discrete dynamics of a system on the edges of the graph, with a scattering process at each vertex governed by the scattering matrix assigned to it. We show that Scattering Quantum Walks encompass several known Quantum Walks. Additionally, we introduce two classes of Open Scattering Quantum Walks on arbitrary graphs, also parameterized by scattering matrices: one class defined on the edges and the other on the vertices of the graph. We show that these walks give rise to proper Quantum Channels and describe their main spectral and dynamical properties, relating them to naturally associated classical Markov chains.

Discrete-time Quantum Walk on Multilayer Networks

Abstract:Multilayer network is a potent platform which paves a way to study the interactions among entities in various networks with multiple types of relationships. In this study, the dynamics of discrete-time quantum walk on a multilayer network are explored in detail. We derive recurrence formulae for the coefficients of the wave function of a quantum walker on an undirected graph with finite number of nodes. By extending these formulae to include extra layers, we develop a simulation model to describe the time-evolution of the quantum walker on a multilayer network. The time-averaged probability and the return probability of the quantum walker are studied in relation to Fourier and Grover walks on multilayer networks. Furthermore, we analyze the impact of decoherence on the quantum transport, shedding light on how environmental interactions may impact the behavior of quantum walkers on multilayer network structures.

Abstract:Focusing on a continuous-time quantum walk on $\mathbb{Z}=\left\{0,\pm 1,\pm 2,\ldots\right\}$, we analyze a probability distribution with which the quantum walker is observed at a position. The walker launches off at a localized state and its system is operated by a spatially periodic Hamiltonian. As a result, we see an asymmetric probability distribution. To catch a long-time behavior, we also try to find a long-time limit theorem and realize that the limit distribution holds a symmetric density function.

Quantum Ultra-Walks: Walks on a Line with Hierarchical Spatial Heterogeneity

Abstract:We discuss the model of a one-dimensional, discrete-time walk on a line with spatial heterogeneity in the form of a variable set of ultrametric barriers. Inspired by the homogeneous quantum walk on a line, we develop a formalism by which the classical ultrametric random walk as well as the quantum walk can be treated in parallel by using a "coined" walk with internal degrees of freedom. For the random walk, this amounts to a $2^{\rm nd}$-order Markov process with a \emph{stochastic} coin, better known as an (anti-)persistent walk. When this coin varies spatially in the hierarchical manner of "ultradiffusion," it reproduces the well-known results of that model. The exact analysis employed for obtaining the walk dimension $d_{w}$, based on the real-space renormalization group (RG), proceeds virtually identical for the corresponding quantum walk with a $unitary$ coin. However, while the classical walk remains robustly diffusive ($d_{w}=\frac{1}{2}$) for a wide range of barrier heights, unitarity provides for a quantum walk dimension $d_{w}$ that varies continuously, for even the smallest amount of heterogeneity, from ballistic spreading ($d_{w}=1$) in the homogeneous limit to confinement ($d_{w}=\infty$) for diverging barriers. Yet for any $d_{w}<\infty$ the quantum ultra-walk never appears to localize.

Abstract:We study the response of spreading behavior, of two-dimensional discrete-time quantum walks, to glassy disorder in the jump length. We consider different discrete probability distributions to mimic the disorder, and three types of coin operators, viz., Grover, Fourier, and Hadamard, to analyze the scale exponent of the disorder-averaged spreading. We find that the ballistic spreading of the clean walk is inhibited in presence of disorder, and the walk becomes sub-ballistic but remains super-diffusive. The resilience to disorder-induced inhibition is stronger in two-dimensional walks, for all the considered coin operations, in comparison to the same in one dimension. The quantum advantage of quantum walks is therefore more secure in two dimensions than in one.

Abstract:Quantum walks are considered in a one-dimensional random medium characterized by static or dynamic disorder. Quantum interference for static disorder can lead to Anderson localization which completely hinders the quantum walk and it is contrasted with the decoherence effect of dynamic disorder having strength W, where a quantum to classical crossover at time $t_{c}\propto W^{-2}$ transforms the quantum walk into an ordinary random walk with diffusive spreading. We demonstrate these localization and decoherence phenomena in quantum carpets of the observed time evolution and examine in detail a dimer lattice which corresponds to a single qubit subject to randomness.
