Abstract:In this fluid dynamics video we explore an array of different possible dynamics for a flexible filament sedimenting in a viscous fluid. The time-dependent shapes and trajectories of the filament are determined analytically and numerically by balancing viscous, elastic and gravitational forces in a slender-body theory for zero-Reynolds number flows. The dynamics are characterized by a single dimensionless elasto-gravitation number. The video shows the process of filament relaxation and reorientation, the formation of particle clouds, and finally a buckling instability.

Abstract:In this paper, vortex induced vibration of a circular cylinder with an attached filament is numerically studied by a Penalty Immersed boundary method (PIBM). In the current work, we study the effects of a single filament on the flow wake of a fixed cylinder, as well as its dynamic response when it is free to move transversely. Two key parameters, the bending coefficient (Kb) and the length (L) of the filament are considered. We report that for a static cylinder, by increasing the length or the rigidity of the filament, both the mean drag force and the fluctuation amplitude of the lift force on the cylinder can be reduced. When the cylinder is free to move, it is found that the existence of a filament actually enhances the vibration of the cylinder by comparing to that of a bare cylinder, differentiating from the prediction of lift fluctuation on a fixed cylinder. In the meanwhile, it leads to a broader resonance region on the vibration response of the cylinder with respect to the reduced velocity. Moreover, various flow patterns are identified in the wake of cylinder for different filament lengths.

Abstract:Abstract The dynamics of a flexible filament sedimenting in a viscous fluid are explored analytically and numerically. Compared with the well-studied case of sedimenting rigid rods, the introduction of filament compliance is shown to cause a significant alteration in the long-time sedimentation orientation and filament geometry. A model is developed by balancing viscous, elastic and gravitational forces in a slender-body theory for zero-Reynolds-number flows, and the filament dynamics are characterized by a dimensionless elasto-gravitation number. Filaments of both non-uniform and uniform cross-sectional thickness are considered. In the weakly flexible regime, a multiple-scale asymptotic expansion is used to obtain expressions for filament translations, rotations and shapes. These are shown to match excellently with full numerical simulations. Furthermore, we show that trajectories of sedimenting flexible filaments, unlike their rigid counterparts, are restricted to a cloud whose envelope is determined by the elasto-gravitation number. In the highly flexible regime we show that a filament sedimenting along its long axis is susceptible to a buckling instability. A linear stability analysis provides a dispersion relation, illustrating clearly the competing effects of the compressive stress and the restoring elastic force in the buckling process. The instability travels as a wave along the filament opposite the direction of gravity as it grows and the predicted growth rates are shown to compare favourably with numerical simulations. The linear eigenmodes of the governing equation are also studied, which agree well with the finite-amplitude buckled shapes arising in simulations.

Kinematics and Forces of a Flexible Body in Karman Vortex Street

Abstract:Experiments of a flexible filament in the wake of a cylinder and in free stream were conducted in a vertical soap film tunnel. The experiments distinctly visualized the movement of the filament. Based on the experimental kinematic results, a 2-d panel method was used to calculate the forces acting on the filament. The experiment and numerical results revealed that different from that in free stream, the filament in Karman vortex street flapped at the same frequency as the vortex street, and with smaller amplitude and larger curvature. The filament suffered an evident thrust in Karman vortex street, while a drag appeared in the case of free stream. The dependence of the drag coefficient on the phase relation between the movement of the filament and the Karman vortex street was also studied.

Abstract:The vortex filament model has become a standard and powerful tool to visualize the motion of quantized vortices in helium superfluids. In this article, we present an overview of the method and highlight its impact in aiding our understanding of quantum turbulence, particularly superfluid helium. We present an analysis of the structure and arrangement of quantized vortices. Our results are in agreement with previous studies showing that under certain conditions, vortices form coherent bundles, which allows for classical vortex stretching, giving quantum turbulence a classical nature. We also offer an explanation for the differences between the observed properties of counterflow and pure superflow turbulence in a pipe. Finally, we suggest a mechanism for the generation of coherent structures in the presence of normal fluid shear.

Abstract:The passive oscillations of flexible filaments in a flowing soap film were investigated to learn the serial interaction between them. When arranged in tandem, the downstream filament flaps at the same frequency as that of the upstream one, but with a larger amplitude, whereas the upstream one is almost unaffected compared to the single filament case. The data analysis shows the downstream filament indeed extracts energy from the vortex street and receives greater force than the upstream one or a single filament in a uniform flow.

Abstract:The interactions between flexible plates and fluids are important physical phenomena. A flag in wind is one of the most simplified and classical models for studying the problem. In this paper, we investigated the response of a flag in flow with an externally forced vibration by using flexible filaments and soap film. Experiments show that for a filament that is either in oscillation or stationary, the external forced vibration leads to its oscillation. A synchronization phenomenon occurs in the experiments. A small perturbation leads to a large response of flapping amplitude in response. The insight provided here is helpful to the applications in the flow control, energy harvesting, and bionic propulsion areas. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:We perform experiments to investigate the relaxation of a highly deformed elastic filament at a liquid-air interface. The dynamics for filaments of differing length, diameter, and elastic modulus collapse to a single curve when the time dependence is scaled by a time scale τ=8πμLo4/B. Even though the time τ is obtained by comparing the linear bending and viscous forces, we find that it also controls the relaxation in the highly nonlinear regime of our experiments. The relaxation, however, is completed in a very small fraction of the time τ due to a prefactor that changes with the tension in the nonlinear regime. Nonlinear numerical simulations show that the force due to tension along the filament is comparable to the bending force, producing a net elastic restoring force that is much smaller than either term. We perform particle image velocimetry at the liquid-air interface to support the results of the numerics. Finally, we find that when the filament is initialized in asymmetric shapes, it rapidly goes to a shape with symmetric stresses. This symmetrization process is entirely nonlinear; we show that the symmetric curvature state minimizes energy at arbitrarily large deformation.

Abstract:Flow induced vibrations are observed in many engineering applications. A flexible body located in the wake of an obstacle is usually forced to vibrate by the periodic vortices shedding from the obstacle. Here we focus on the response of the flexible body in the wake. Soap film tunnels are used to provide two-dimensional flow. Cylinders and flexible filaments are employed as obstacles and flexible bodies, respectively. The filaments exhibit lock-in behavior to the wake. Three response modes are found by changing the distance between the filaments and cylinders. The observations are illuminated in terms of waving plate theory.
Numerical study of filament suspensions at finite inertia

Abstract:We present a numerical study on the rheology of semi-dilute and concentrated filament suspensions of different bending stiffness and Reynolds number, with the immersed boundary method used to couple the fluid and solid. The filaments are considered as one-dimensional inextensible slender bodies with fixed aspect ratio, obeying the Euler-Bernoulli beam equation. To understand the global suspension behavior we relate it to the filament microstructure, deformation and elastic energy and examine the stress budget to quantify the effect of the elastic contribution. At fixed volume fraction, the viscosity of the suspension reduces when decreasing the bending rigidity and grows when increasing the Reynolds number. The change in the relative viscosity is stronger at finite inertia, although still in the laminar flow regime as considered here. Moreover, we find the first normal stress difference to be positive as in polymeric fluids, and to increase with the Reynolds number; its value has a peak for an intermediate value of the filament bending stiffness. The peak value is found to be proportional to the Reynolds number, moving towards more rigid suspensions at larger inertia. Moreover, the viscosity increases when increasing the filament volume fraction, and the rate of increase of the filament stress with the bending rigidity is stronger at higher Reynolds numbers and reduces with the volume fraction. We show that this behaviour is associated with the formation of a more ordered structure in the flow, where filaments tend to be more aligned and move as a compact aggregate, thus reducing the filament-filament interactions despite their volume fraction increases.

Motion Transition of Active Filaments: Rotation Without Hydrodynamic Interactions.

Abstract:We investigate the dynamics of an active semiflexible filament in a bead–rod model involving dynamically the hydrodynamic interaction (HI), active force, filament flexibility and viscous drag. We find that the filament can show three distinct types of motion, namely, translation, snaking and rotation, with the variation of the rigidity or active force. The transition from translation to snaking is continuous and mainly due to transverse instability, while the snaking–rotation transition is first-order like and shown to result from a type of symmetry breaking associated with the shape kinematics. Of particular interest, we find that HI is not necessary for the rotation or snaking motion, but can enlarge remarkably the parameter regions in which they can occur. Combining with local collisions, we show that, for the parameter region where HI is essential for the maintenance of rotation curvature of a single filament, HI is also essential for the emergence of collective vortexes. Thus, our findings provide new insights into the subtle role of HI in the formation of collective structures in active systems

Abstract:Flexible filaments moving in viscous fluids are ubiquitous in the natural microscopic world. For example, the swimming of bacteria and spermatozoa as well as important physiological functions at organ-level, such as the cilia-induced motion of mucus in the lungs, or individual cell-level, such as actin filaments or microtubules, all employ flexible filaments moving in viscous fluids. As a result of fluid-structure interactions, a variety of nonlinear phenomena may arise in the dynamics of such moving flexible filaments. In this paper we derive the mathematical tools required to study filament-driven propulsion in the asymptotic limit of stiff filaments. Motion in the rigid limit leads to hydrodynamic loads which deform the filament and impact the filament propulsion. We first derive the general mathematical formulation and then apply it to the case of a helical filament, a situation relevant for the swimming of flagellated bacteria and for the transport of artificial, magnetically actuated motors. We find that, as a result of flexibility, the helical filament is either stretched or compressed (conforming previous studies) and its axis also bends, a new result which we interpret physically. We then explore and interpret the dependence of the perturbed propulsion speed due to the deformation on the relevant dimensionless dynamic and geometric parameters.

Abstract:This fluid dynamics video shows three-dimensional vortex formation process for plates in impulsive motion which is investigated experimentally by using defocusing digital particle image velocimetry (DDPIV). Rigid and flexible plate cases are compared in order to study the effect of flexibility on 3D vortex formation and associated hydrodynamic forces. This study was motivated by the general question of how the flexibility of flapping propulsors in flying and swimming animals affects vortex formation and propulsive force. For translating and rotating motion, the flexible plate generates a vortex morphology which is drastically different from that of the rigid plate. We identified the deflection of the tip region as the source of this difference. The flexible plate does not produce a large peak for the hydrodynamic force at the impulsive start and stop. This force trend is correlated with smooth vortex formation and shedding processes.
Vortex-vortex interaction in thin superconducting films

Abstract:The properties of vortices in superconducting thin films are revisited. The interaction between two Pearl vortices in an infinite film is approximated at all distances by a simple expression. The interaction of a vortex with a regular lattice of real or image vortices is given. The two spring constants are calculated that one vortex in the vortex lattice feels when the surrounding vortices are rigidly pinned or are free. The modification of these London results by the finite size of real films is obtained. In finite films, the interaction force between two vortices is not a central force but depends on both vortex positions, not only on their distance. At the film edges the interaction energy is zero and the interaction force is peaked. Even far from the edges the vortex interaction considerably deviates from the Pearl result and is always smaller than it.

A simulation platform for slender, semiflexible, and inextensible fibers with Brownian hydrodynamics and steric repulsion

Abstract:The last few years have witnessed an explosion of new numerical methods for filament hydrodynamics. Aside from their ubiquity in biology, physics, and engineering, filaments present unique challenges from an applied-mathematical point of view. Their slenderness, inextensibility, semiflexibility, and meso-scale nature all require numerical methods that can handle multiple lengthscales in the presence of constraints. Accounting for Brownian motion while keeping the dynamics in detailed balance and on the constraint is difficult, as is including a background solvent, which couples the dynamics of multiple filaments together in a suspension. In this paper, we present a simulation platform for deterministic and Brownian inextensible filament dynamics which includes nonlocal fluid dynamics and steric repulsion. For nonlocal hydrodynamics, we define the mobility on a single filament using line integrals of Rotne-Prager-Yamakawa regularized singularities, and numerically preserve the symmetric positive definite property by using a thicker regularization width for the nonlocal integrals than for the self term. For steric repulsion, we introduce a soft local repulsive potential defined as a double-integral over two filaments, then present a scheme to identify and evaluate the nonzero components of the integrand. Using a temporal integrator developed in previous work, we demonstrate that Langevin dynamics sample from the equilibrium distribution of free filament shapes, and that the modeling error in using the thicker regularization is small. We conclude with two examples, sedimenting filaments and cross-linked fiber networks, in which nonlocal hydrodynamics does and does not generate long-range flow fields, respectively. In the latter case, we show that the effect of hydrodynamics can be accounted for through steric repulsion.

Abstract:Many intriguing patterns are driven by fluid instabilities, even down to micrometer and nanometer scales, with numerous technological and industrial applications. Here, we propose a novel physical mechanism for filament formation in a stretched viscous sheet by combining stretching and van der Waals forces. We show that a transverse instability is enhanced while the longitudinal instability is suppressed, resulting in filamentation. We find a close agreement between the experimental data and the predictions of a linear-stability analysis. These results offer a pathway to achieving sophisticated microstructuring-nanostructuring for functional devices in either a single fiber or in integrated fabrics for large-scale textiles.
Dynamics of Finite-Size Air Filaments in a Static Liquid

Abstract:This study undertakes a numerical investigation of the dynamics of a finite-size air filament surrounded by a denser fluid medium with a range of viscosity. The two edges of the filament retract due to its surface tension effects. It is shown that if the aspect ratio is small, the filament recoils in a single bubble while for large aspect ratios, the filament ruptures at its two ends. Between these two limits, the filament can escape from pinch-off through the reopening of the neck and/or breakup in the middle region. The air filament pinch-off is accompanied by the formation of a thin air thread, which subsequently breaks up into microbubbles. Viscous effects of the external fluid do not show a significant impact on the fate of large or small aspect ratio filaments but instead control the shape of the bulge and the neck region close to breakup. Before breakup, the bulge adopts a prolate shape for Ohnesorge numbers smaller than 0.01, while an oblate shape is obtained for Ohnesorge numbers larger than 1. A spherical shape is obtained between these two limits. For small Ohnesorge numbers, the neck region exhibits a reflection symmetry perpendicular to the filament axis while for large Ohnesorge numbers, a thread of air forms and connects the bulge to the filament. The radius of the neck is shown to decrease as a power-law function of the time before breakup with the exponent of 0.5 for small Ohnesorge numbers and 1 for large Ohnesorge numbers.
Flexibility Induced Motion Transition of Active Filament: Rotation without Long-range Hydrodynamic Interaction

Abstract:We investigate the motion of active semiflexible filament with shape kinematics and hydrodynamic interaction including. Three types of filament motion are found: Translation, snaking and rotation. Change of flexibility will induce instability of shape kinematics and further result in asymmetry of shape kinematics respect to the motion of mass center, which are responsible to a continuous-like transition from translation to snaking and a first-order-like transition from snaking to rotation, respectively. Of particular interest, we find that long-range hydrodynamic interaction is not necessary for filament rotation, but can enhance remarkably the parameter region for its appearance. This finding may provide an evidence that the experimentally found collective rotation of active filaments is more likely to arise from the individual property even without the long-range hydrodynamic interaction.

Abstract:We investigate the effects of uniform viscosity gradients on the spontaneous oscillations of an elastic, active filament in viscous fluids. Combining numerical simulations and linear stability analysis, we demonstrate that a viscosity gradient increasing from the filament's base to tip destabilises the system, facilitating its self-oscillation. This effect is elucidated through a reduced-order model, highlighting the delicate balance between destabilising active forces and stabilising viscous forces. Additionally, we reveal that while a perpendicular viscosity gradient to the filament's orientation minimally affects instability, it induces asymmetric ciliary beating, thus generating a net flow along the gradient. Our findings offer new insights into the complex behaviours of biological and artificial filaments in complex fluid environments, contributing to the broader understanding of filament dynamics in heterogeneous viscous media.

The dynamics of fibers dispersed in viscoelastic turbulent flows

Abstract:This study explores the dynamics of finite-size fibers suspended freely in a viscoelastic turbulent flow. For a fiber suspended in Newtonian flows, two different flapping regimes were identified previously by Rosti et al (2018). Here we explore, how the fiber dynamics is modified by the elasticity of the carrier fluid by performing Direct Numerical Simulations of a two-way coupled fiber-fluid system in a parametric space spanning different Deborah numbers, fiber bending stiffness and the linear density difference between fiber and fluid. We examine how these parameters influence various fiber characteristics such as the frequency of flapping, curvature, and alignment with the fluid strain and polymer stretching directions. Results reveal that the neutrally-bouyant fibers, depending on their flexibility, oscillate with large and small time scales transpiring from the flow, but the smaller time-scales are suppressed as the polymer elasticity increases. Polymer stretching is uncommunicative to denser-than-fluid fibers, which flap with large time scales from the flow when flexible and with their natural frequency when rigid. Thus, the characteristic elastic time scale has a subdominant effect when the fibers are neutrally-bouyant, while its effect is absent when the fibers become more inertial. Additionally, we see that the inertial fibers have larger curvatures and are less responsive to the polymer presence, whereas the neutrally-bouyant fibers show quantitative changes. Also, the neutrally-bouyant fibers show a higher alignment with the polymer stretching directions compared to the denser ones. In a nutshell, the polymers exert a larger influence on neutrally-bouyant fibers compared to the denser ones. The study comprehensively addresses the interplay between polymer elasticity and the fiber structural properties in determining its response behaviour in an elasto-inertial turbulent flow.
