Abstract:Traditional microwave absorbers can hide target objects from the detection of radar waves without tackling optical waves. However, in actual scenarios, the objects might still be observed by a hyperspectral remote sensor or an imaging system from comparison with environmental optical features, in particular for variable backgrounds. For this aspect, a comprehensive stealthing technique able to deal with microwaves and optical features simultaneously adapting to the variable environment is highly desired. In this work, an ultrathin flexible metamaterial that can simultaneously realize wideband microwave absorption and controllable visible and near-infrared luminescence spectra is proposed. The designed artificial coat can absorb more than 80% of the incident energy in the X-band (8-12 GHz) within a large incidence angle range up to 54° at low polarization sensitivity, while its real-time visible and near-infrared luminescence spectrum can be electrically adjusted through an integrated emission system. The method proposed here can be extended to broader wave bands and find important applications in multifunctional stealthing technologies.
Ultrathin Multiband Microwave Absorber Based on Electric-Field-coupled-lc Resonators

Abstract:In this paper, flexible electric-field-coupled-LC (ELC) resonator for ultrathin microwave absorbing is designed. The microwave absorber consists of three layers: periodic-arrangement ELC resonators, 1.1mm FR-4 substrate and background metallic plane. Single-band, dual-band and triple-band absorber are achieved by scaling the ELC resonators in frequency range of 5–20 GHz. Current distribution, excellent absorption rates and electric field presented in paper verify good performance of proposed absorber.
Highly Transparent Tunable Microwave Perfect Absorption for Broadband Microwave Shielding

Abstract:To shield undesirable microwave radiation to protect electronic systems and human health, microwave perfect absorbers have attracted increasing interests in recent years. However, the opaque or semitransparent nature of most implemented microwave absorbers limit their applications in optics. Here, we demonstrate a high-performance microwave absorber based on an impedance-assisted Fabry-Perot resonant cavity with an ITO-dielectric-ITO structure without complex nanofabrication. The device features near-unity absorption (99.5% at 14.4 GHz with a 4.5 GHz effective bandwidth), excellent electromagnetic interference shielding performance (24 dB) in the Ku-band, and high optical transparency (89.0% from 400 nm to 800 nm). The peak absorption frequency of the device can be tuned by changing the thickness of glass slab and sheet resistance of ITO films. Our work provides a low-cost and feasible solution for high-performance optically transparent microwave shielding and stealth, paving the way towards applications in areas of microwave and optics.

Abstract:To achieve broadband microwave absorption, a three-layer structure is designed and manufactured. It involves a resistive frequency selective surface (FSS) sandwiched between two layers of magnetic sheets. The measurement results reveal that this structure exhibits −13 dB reflectivity in the frequency range of 7.9-18 GHz while the thickness is only 1.7 mm. The reflectivity bandwidth at the level of −10 dB is 11.4 GHz which is much wider than that of magnetic sheets with non-resistive FSS or the magnetic sheets without FSS. The effect of resistive FSS on the performance of the multilayered absorber is discussed in detail. It is concluded that an embedded resistive double loops FSS can result in a secondary resonance peak which obviously broadens the reflectivity bandwidth of the magnetic sheets.

Abstract:In this paper, the physical model of electrically thin weakly conductive film with intrinsic surface impedance is established, indicating that the imaginary part of high surface impedance is non-negligible at microwave frequencies. In the design of lossy frequency selective surface absorbers, we introduce the imaginary part of intrinsic surface impedance for the first time. With the experimentally established relationship between the complex surface impedance and the DC square resistance, this complex surface impedance allows us to accurately predict the electromagnetic response of high surface impedance film at microwave frequencies and provides an advantage in reducing the thickness of absorber. The proposed ultra-thin absorber can provide -10 dB reduction over the frequency range of 4.5-13.3 GHz. Total thickness of microwave absorber is only 0.06λ at lowest operating frequency, which is close to the theoretical limitation. The measurement is provided to verify the validity of the equivalent relationship and the reliability of the full-wave model. This study provides a new way to reduce the thickness of absorber, exhibiting promising potential for stealth technique.

Abstract:High-efficient microwave absorbers (MAs) with excellent absorption performance and lightweight characteristics have important applications in the military and civil. Here, we propose a dielectric-magnetic hybrid microwave absorber composed of a lattice of dielectric cylinders combined with thin magnetic cylinders backed by a perfect electrical conductor ground plane. The dielectric material that is designed as the dielectric cylinder is based on multi-walled carbon nanotubes-epoxy (MWCNT-EP). The MWCNT-EP is prepared and the S-parameters are measured by the standard transmission/reflection (T/R) method. The thin magnetic cylinder is based on a commercial magnetic material with a height of only 1 mm. With the coaction of magnetic loss and dielectric loss, the proposed microwave absorber’s reflection loss is less than −20 dB under normal incident with a total height of 5 mm in the X-band. Besides, the dielectric-magnetic microwave absorber can maintain good absorption performance with different incident angles and polarizations. In this work, we provide a method to combine the properties of magnetic and dielectric material to construct the MA with high-efficient absorption performance.
Microwave Absorbing Properties of Composites Containing Ultra-Low Loading of Optimized Microwires

Abstract:A set of composite absorbers with ultra-low loading of down to 0.017 wt.% short-cut microwires were prepared and investigated in terms of their magnetic and microwave properties in the X-band (8 - 12 GHz). The key parameters that could factor into the performance of the present absorbers have been systematically studied from micro to macro scale, i.e., the magnetic domain structure modulated by different internal stress scenarios, microwire aspect and composite filling ratio, and relative importance of impedance matching and material loss. Longer wires (9 mm) and wires after suitable treatment lead to the enhancement of microwave absorbing property mainly due to the larger magnetic loss resulted from the natural ferromagnetic resonance, which is induced in the domain rotation and reversal process. The internal stress modification by removal of glass and joule annealing has profound effects in formulating the microwave absorption frequency and intensity of microwire composites by tailoring the domain structure and local anisotropy field. It is found that the composites with microwires annealed at 132 mA for 15 min obtain the minimum reflection loss and broadest absorption bandwidth with reference to -10 dB at 1.5 mm thickness, which is -25.7 dB (0.81 GHz) at 1139 GHz caused by the relative high attenuation constant and best matching condition where Z(real) is 1.026 and Z(imag) is -0.102. This indicates that impedance matching plays a dominant role in tailoring the microwave absorbing property. Remarkably, the unconventional absorption frequency - matching thickness relation based on the quarter-wavelength model offers possibility to address the limitation of thickness for low frequency absorbing application. Hierarchical Carbon Nanotube-Coated Carbon Fiber: Ultra Lightweight, Thin, and Highly Efficient Microwave Absorber

Abstract:Strong EM wave absorption and lightweight are the foremost important factors that drive the real-world applications of the modern microwave absorbers. This work mainly deals with the design of highly efficient microwave absorbers, where a hierarchical carbon nanotube (CNT) forest is first grown on the carbon fiber (CF) through the catalytic chemical vapor deposition method. The hierarchical carbon nanotube grown on the carbon fiber (CNTCF) is then embedded in the epoxy matrix to synthesize lightweight nanocomposites for their use as efficient microwave absorbers. The morphological study shows that carbon nanotubes (CNTs) self-assemble to form a trapping center on the carbon fiber. The electromagnetic characteristics of resultant nanocomposites are investigated exclusively in the X-band (8.2-12.4 GHz) using the network analyzer. The synthesized nanocomposites, containing 0.35 and 0.50 wt % CNTCFs, exhibit excellent microwave absorption properties, which could be attributed to the better impedance matching conditions and high dielectric losses. The reflection loss (RL) of -42.0 dB (99.99% absorption) with -10 dB (90% absorption) and -20 dB (99% absorption) bandwidths of 2.7 and 1.16 GHz, respectively, is achieved for 0.35 wt % CNTCF loading at 2.5 mm thickness. The composite with 0.50 wt % CNTCF loading illustrates substantial absorption efficiency with the RL reaching -24.5 dB (99.65% absorption) at 9.8 GHz and -10 dB bandwidth comprising 84.5% of the entire X band. The excellent microwave properties obtained here are primarily due to the electric dipole polarization, interfacial polarization, and unique trapping center. These trapping centers basically induce multiple reflections and scatterings, which attenuate more microwave energy. This investigation opens a new approach for the development of extremely lightweight, small-thickness, and highly efficient microwave absorbers for X-band applications.

Abstract:The design, fabrication, and measurement of a metamaterial with broadband microwave absorption properties in the low frequency range are presented in this paper. The metamaterial has a layered structure with a thickness of 2.2 mm, and consists of a conventional printed circuit board (PCB) process fabricated cross array on the surface of a flake-shaped carbonyl iron (CI) powder-filled silicon rubber composite magnetic substrate backed by a metal plane. The measurement results indicate that the absorption bandwidth (defined as the frequency range with reflection coefficient below-10 dB) of the proposed structure is 2.55 GHz-5.68 GHz. The power loss mechanism was outlined according to the current distribution on and off the resonance frequency. Moreover, the absorption performance of the proposed structure for incident angles ranging from 0 degrees to 60 degrees for both transverse electric (TE) wave and transverse magnetic (TM) waves were exhibited.
Ultrathin and lightweight microwave absorbers made of mu-near-zero metamaterials

Abstract:We present a theory of perfect absorption in a bilayer model composed of a mu-near-zero (MNZ) metamaterial (MM) absorbing layer on a metallic substrate. Our analytical solutions reveal that a MM layer with a large purely imaginary permeability and a moderate permittivity backed by a metallic plane has a zero reflection at normal incidence when the thickness is ultrathin. The impedance-mismatched metamaterial absorber (MA) can be 77.3% thinner than conventional impedance-matched MAs with the same material loss in order to get the same absorption. A microwave absorber using double-layered spiral MMs with a thickness of only about one percent of the operating wavelength is designed and realized. An absorption efficiency above 93% at 1.74 GHz is demonstrated experimentally at illumination angles up to 60 degrees. Our absorber is 98% lighter than traditional microwave absorbers made of natural materials working at the same frequencies.

Abstract:Abstract The demand for high‐performance absorbers in the microwave frequencies, which can reduce undesirable radiation that interferes with electronic system operation, has attracted increasing interest in recent years. However, most devices implemented so far are opaque, limiting their use in optical applications that require high visible transparency. Here, a scheme is demonstrated for microwave absorbers featuring high transparency in the visible range, near‐unity absorption (≈99.5% absorption at 13.75 GHz with 3.6 GHz effective bandwidth) in the Ku‐band, and hence excellent electromagnetic interference shielding performance (≈26 dB). The device is based on an asymmetric Fabry–Pérot cavity, which incorporates a monolayer graphene and a transparent ultrathin (8 nm) doped silver layer as absorber and reflector, and fused silica as the middle dielectric layer. Guided by derived formulism, this asymmetric cavity is demonstrated with microwaves near‐perfectly and exclusively absorbs in the ultrathin graphene film. The peak absorption frequency of the cavity can be readily tuned by simply changing the thickness of the dielectric spacer. The approach provides a viable solution for a new type of microwave absorber with high visible transmittance, paving the way towards applications in the area of optics.

Abstract:This paper presents a numerical analysis, using the rigorous-coupled-wave-analysis method, of microwave and far-IR radiation scattering on thin conductive films of nanometer thickness under the condition of total internal reflection. Transmittance, reflection, and absorption studies have shown the possibility of overcoming the 50% absorption limit with frequency-independent behavior; the absorption above the critical angle reaches values greater than 90%. In addition, the influence of such thin metal-dielectric structure on the Goos–Hänchen shift is considered. At maximum absorption, calculations showed its absence in both TE and TM polarizations. The numerical analysis was carried out for a plane wave and for a 500 cm diameter beam.

Abstract:The characteristics of microwave reflected from the surface of microwave absorbing materials are fully investigated both theoretically and experimentally, Some important conclusions are obtained from the study. It is indicated that the wave reflected from the surface of microwave absorbing materials is formed by vector composition of their complex reflectivity rather than by simply adding of their power. It is also obtained from the results that the uneven thickness of the materials is favorite for extending the frequency band, nevertheless, it is not good to realize the lower frequency point of absorption. And a special method to extend frequency band is given by analyzing the results of experiment.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes have been observed to emit ultraviolet, visible and infrared radiation when exposed to microwaves. We have performed experiments in which both short (0.5 microns to 2 microns) and long (5 microns to 30 microns) single and double walled carbon nanotubes were exposed to 2.46 GHz microwaves at a pressure of 10^-6 Torr. Structural modifications of the-carbon nanotubes due to microwave absorption have been studied using the Raman spectroscopy G-band and D-band intensities, which suggest that microwave irradiation at relatively low pressure results in an increase in nanotube defects, especially in the case of the long nanotubes. Furthermore, a comparison of the spectra of the radiation emitted from the nanotubes suggests that the longer nanotubes emitted radiation of much greater intensity than the shorter nanotubes. Based on the results of the experiments and results described in previous reports, the ultraviolet, visible and infrared radiation emitted as the result of microwave absorption by carbon nanotubes seems to be primarily blackbody radiation emitted due to Joule heating. However, the presence of several broad photopeaks in the spectra of the emitted radiation (which do not seem to be related to gases absorbed by the nanotubes or the presence of catalyst particles) suggest that emissions are not the result of Joule heating alone.
An Optically Transparent Ultrabroadband Microwave Absorber

Abstract:An optically transparent ultrabroadband microwave absorber was proposed and experimentally verified, which achieved 23.4-GHz deep absorption bandwidth (absorption >0.8 from 15.6 to 39.0 GHz). What is more, the whole absorber is transparent in the visible light range (transmittance >0.8 from 400 to 1100 nm). The absorber thickness was 1.1 mm only, about 1/10 of the center wavelength (9.23 mm, or 32.5 GHz), and can be further reduced. Further analysis showed that the absorber was insensitive to the polarization angle and dropped only little for incident angles smaller than 30°. In general, this absorber can achieve ultrabroadband low reflection in both visible-light and microwave frequencies, providing a new solution for the design of stealth systems.

Abstract:The ability to absorb a broad frequency range of microwaves is essential for improving the performance of various electromagnetic interference shielding applications. However, the achievement of broadband microwave absorption with high optical transparency remains a long‐standing and unsolved challenge. Here, a simple and powerful method for high‐efficiency broadband microwave absorption is presented by introducing strongly overlapped multi‐cavity resonances, which is supported by multi‐layer structures comprising of alternating graphene/silica pairs and ultrathin silver films. A design guideline for achieving broadband absorption in multi‐layer structures is proposed and, more importantly, the complementary effect of different graphene layers on the microwave absorption mechanism is revealed for the first time, providing a new analytical perspective. Experiments show that the absorption efficiency of the proposed multi‐layer structures is near unity (≈100%) at resonant peaks with absorption bandwidths (≥50%) up to ≈30 GHz within the measured range of 32 GHz. In addition, the multi‐layer structures exhibit highly visible transmittance ranging from ≈85.8% to 68.0%. The proposed general theoretical framework and physical insights in combination with experimental demonstrations lay the foundation for designing a new type of transparent broadband microwave absorber. A multi‐layered structure consisting of graphene/silica units and ultrathin Ag films for transparent broadband microwave absorbers is demonstrated. A design guideline for achieving broadband absorption in multi‐layer structures is proposed and, more importantly, the complementary effect of different graphene layers on the microwave absorption mechanism is revealed, providing a new analytical perspective.

Abstract:An ingenious microstructure of electromagnetic microwave absorption materials is crucial to achieve strong absorption and a broad bandwidth. Herein, one-dimensional (1D) carbon fibers with implantation of zero-dimensional (0D) ZIF-8-derived carbon frameworks and construction of a three-dimensional (3D) microcosmic multichannel porous structure are fabricated by electro-blown spinning, solvent-thermal reaction, and high-temperature pyrolysis techniques. The 1D carbon fiber skeleton with a multichannel structure provides a direct axial conductive pathway for charge transport, which plays an important role in dielectric loss. The 0D surface carbon frameworks offer plenty of heterogeneous interfaces to trigger intensive interfacial polarization loss and act as dihedral angles for microwave scattering. The 3D microcosmic multichannel pores can not only generate multiple reflections as much as possible to dissipate electromagnetic microwave energy but also supply huge interior cavities to improve impedance matching. Thanks to the synergistic effect of a strong electrically conductive pathway for enhancing the conductive loss, a plenteous heterogeneous interface for triggering intensive interfacial polarization loss, microcosmic multichannel pores for generating multiple reflections and improving impedance matching, and N and O atom doping for inducing dipole polarization, the optimal sample with an ingenious microstructure delivers an excellent absorption performance of a minimum reflection loss of -35.5 dB at a thickness of 5.0 mm and an effective absorption bandwidth of 6.72 GHz (10.96-17.68 GHz) at a thickness of 2.0 mm. Such a well-designed multichannel porous carbon fiber may pave the way for the exploitation of high-performance microwave absorbing materials.
A Simply Structured Thin Carbon-Fiber-Reinforced Material for Highly Efficient Microwave Absorption

Abstract:A thin laminated composite is proposed in this article for highly efficient microwave absorption at both high frequency and low frequency. It is composed of two layers of carbon-fiber-reinforced planar structure. In each layer, periodically arranged fiber array with the axes of the fibers parallel to each other is embedded into a ceramic matrix which is used to bind the fibers together and to provide necessary mechanical or chemical properties. Stacking up two layers of the planar structure with the fibers in different layers orientated into different directions produces a lamina which can be further parallely stacked up to provide the whole laminated material. The influence of the structural and electromagnetic parameters on the microwave absorption efficiency is first studied in detail with scattering matrix and boundary-mode matching method. Then the genetic algorithm and the sequential quadratic programming methods are used to form a two-step strategy based on the mode-matching method to optimize the structural and electromagnetic parameters for a highly efficient microwave absorption in both high-frequency and low-frequency bands. Numerical examples are also given to demonstrate the high absorption efficiency of the designed laminated material.

Ultrathin microwave metamaterial absorber utilizing embedded resistors

Abstract:We numerically and experimentally studied an ultrathin and broadband perfect absorber by enhancing the bandwidth with embedded resistors into the metamaterial structure, which is easy to fabricate in order to lower the Q-factor and by using multiple resonances with the patches of different sizes. We analyze the absorption mechanism in terms of the impedance matching with the free space and through the distribution of surface current at each resonance frequency. The magnetic field, induced by the antiparallel surface currents, is formed strongly in the direction opposite to the incident electromagnetic wave, to cancel the incident wave, leading to the perfect absorption. The corresponding experimental absorption was found to be higher than 97% in 0.88-3.15 GHz. The agreement between measurement and simulation was good. The aspects of our proposed structure can be applied to future electronic devices, for example, advanced noise-suppression sheets in the microwave regime.

Abstract:In this paper, mu-near-zero (MNZ) metamaterials are utilized to achieve an ultrathin absorber with a thickness of only about one percent of the operating wavelength. The metamaterial absorber (MA) is made of double-layered metallic spiral arrays designed to have a large purely imaginary permeability at low microwave frequencies (~ 1.7 GHz). An absorption efficiency above 90% is demonstrated at illumination angles up to 60 degrees. A polarization-insensitive MA implemented by 2D isotropic metamaterials is also studied. Our designs have great application potential as compared with the traditional heavy and thick absorbers made of natural materials working at the same frequencies.
