Abstract:In this paper it is shown that the RO(Z/2)-graded cohomology of a certain class of Rep(Z/2)-complexes, which includes projective spaces and Grassmann manifolds, is always free as a module over the cohomology of a point when the coefficient Mackey functor is \underline{Z/2}.

Abstract:For any natural numbers $k \leq n$, the rational cohomology ring of the space of continuous maps $S^{2k-1} \to S^{2n-1}$ (respectively, $S^{4k-1} \to S^{4n-1}$) equivariant under the Hopf action of the circle (respectively, of the group $S^3$ of unit quaternions) is naturally isomorphic to that of the Stiefel manifold $V_k({\mathbb C}^n)$ (respectively, $V_k({\mathbb H}^n)$). The natural maps of integral cohomology groups of these spaces of equivariant maps to cohomology of Stiefel manifolds are surjective but not injective.

On the growth of torsion in the cohomology of some arithmetic groups of $\mathbb{Q}$-rank one

Abstract:Given a number field $F$ with ring of integers $\mathcal{O}_{F}$, one can associate to any torsion free subgroup of $\operatorname{SL}(2,\mathcal{O}_{F})$ of finite index a complete Riemannian manifold of finite volume with fibered cusp ends. For natural choices of flat vector bundles on such a manifold, we show that analytic torsion is identified with the Reidemeister torsion of the Borel-Serre compactification. This is used to obtain exponential growth of torsion in the cohomology for sequences of congruence subgroups.

Abstract:Poincare duality lies at the heart of the homological theory of manifolds. In the presence of the action of a group it is well-known that Poincare duality fails in Bredon's ordinary, integer-graded equivariant homology. We give here a detailed account of one way around this problem, which is to extend equivariant ordinary homology to a theory graded on representations of fundamental groupoids. Versions of this theory have appeared previously for actions of finite groups, but this is the first account that works for all compact Lie groups. The first part of this work is a detailed discussion of RO(G)-graded ordinary homology and cohomology, collecting scattered results and filling in gaps in the literature. In particular, we give details on change of groups and products that do not seem to have appeared elsewhere. We also discuss the relationship between ordinary homology and cohomology when the group is compact Lie, in which case the two theories are not represented by the same spectrum. The remainder of the work discusses the extension to grading on representations of fundamental groupoids, concentrating on those aspects that are not simple generalizations of the RO(G)-graded case. These theories can be viewed as defined on parametrized spaces, and then the representing objects are parametrized spectra; we use heavily foundational work of May and Sigurdsson on parametrized spectra. We end with a discussion of Poincare duality for arbitrary smooth equivariant manifolds.

A geometric computation of cohomotopy groups in co-degree one

Abstract:Using geometric arguments, we compute the group of homotopy classes of maps from a closed $(n+1)$-dimensional manifold to the $n$-sphere for $n \geq 3$. Our work extends results from Kirby, Melvin and Teichner for closed oriented 4-manifolds and from Konstantis for closed $(n+1)$-dimensional spin manifolds, considering possibly non-orientable and non-spinnable manifolds. In the process, we introduce two types of manifolds that generalize the notion of odd and even 4-manifolds. Furthermore, for the case that $n \geq 4$, we discuss applications for rank $n$ spin vector bundles and obtain a refinement of the Euler class in the cohomotopy group that fully obstructs the existence of a non-vanishing section.

Abstract:Recent work of Chen He has determined through GKM methods the Borel equivariant cohomology with rational coefficients of the isotropy action on a real Grassmannian and an real oriented Grassmannian through GKM methods. In this expository note, we propound a less involved approach, due essentially to Vitali Kapovitch, to computing equivariant cohomology rings $H^*_K(G/H)$ for $G,K,H$ connected Lie groups, and apply it to recover the equivariant cohomology of the Grassmannians. The bulk is setup and commentary; once one believes in the model, the proof itself is under a page.

New invariants of involutions from Seiberg-Witten Floer theory

Abstract:We study equivariant Seiberg-Witten Floer theory of rational homology $3$-spheres in the special case where the group action is given by an involution. The case of involutions deserves special attention because we can couple the involution to the charge conjugation symmetry of Seiberg-Witten theory. This leads to new Floer-theoretic invariants which we study and apply in a variety of applications. In particular, we construct a series of delta-invariants $\delta^E_*, \delta^R_*, \delta^S_*$ which are the equivariant equivalents of the Ozsváth-Szabó $d$-invariant. The delta-invariants come in three types: equivariant, Real and spin depending on the type of the spin$^c$-structure involved. The delta-invariants satisfy many useful properties, including a Froyshov-type inequality for equivariant cobordisms. We compute the delta-invariants in a wide range of examples including: equivariant plumbings, branched double covers of knots and equivariant Dehn surgery. We also consider various applications including obstructions to extending involutions over bounding $4$-manifolds, non-smoothable involutions on $4$-manifolds with boundary, equivariant embeddings of $3$-manifolds in $4$-manifolds and non-orientable surfaces bounding knots.

Abstract:We describe the ring structure of the rational cohomology of the Torelli groups of the manifolds $\#^g S^n \times S^n$ in a stable range, for $2n \geq 6$. Some of our results are also valid for $2n=2$, where they are closely related to unpublished results of Kawazumi and Morita.

Abstract:Following an outline of Rezk, we give a construction of complex-analytic $G$-equivariant elliptic cohomology for an arbitrary compact Lie group $G$ and we prove some of its fundamental properties. The construction is parametrised over the orbit category of the groupoid of principal $G$-bundles over 2-dimensional tori and generalises Grojnowski's construction of equivariant elliptic cohomology.

Abstract:We give a new CR invariant treatment of the bigraded Rumin complex and related cohomology groups via differential forms. A key benefit is the identification of balanced $A_\infty$-structures on the Rumin and bigraded Rumin complexes. We also prove related Hodge decomposition theorems. Among many applications, we give a sharp upper bound on the dimension of the Kohn--Rossi groups $H^{0,q}(M^{2n+1})$, $1\leq q\leq n-1$, of a closed strictly pseudoconvex manifold with a contact form of nonnegative pseudohermitian Ricci curvature; we prove a sharp CR analogue of the Fr\"olicher inequalities in terms of the second page of a natural spectral sequence; we give new proofs of selected topological properties of closed Sasakian manifolds; and we generalize the Lee class $\mathcal{L}\in H^1(M;\mathscr{P})$ -- whose vanishing is necessary and sufficient for the existence of a pseudo-Einstein contact form -- to all nondegenerate orientable CR manifolds.

Abstract:We compute the upper characteristic rank of the projective Stiefel manifolds over $\mathbb R, \mathbb C$ and $\mathbb H$ and of the flip Stiefel manifolds. We provide bounds for the cup lengths of these spaces. We also provide necessary conditions for existence of $S^3$-map between quaternionic Stiefel manifolds using Fadell-Husseini index.

Abstract:In this short note we discuss certain examples of Legendrian submanifolds, whose linearized Legendrian contact (co)homology groups over integers have non-vanishing algebraic torsion. More precisely, for a given arbitrary finitely generated abelian group $G$ and a positive integer $n\geq 3$, $n\neq 4$, we construct examples of Legendrian submanifolds of the standard contact vector space $\mathbb R^{2n+1}$, whose $n-1$-th linearized Legendrian contact (co)homology over $\mathbb Z$ computed with respect to a certain augmentation is isomorphic to $G$.

The Dehn twist on a connected sum of two homology tori

Abstract:Kronheimer-Mrowka shows that the Dehn twist along a $3$-sphere in the neck of two $K3$ surfaces is not smoothly isotopic to the identity. Their result requires that the manifolds are simply connected and the signature of one of them is $16 \mod 32$. We generalize the Pin$(2)$-equivariant family Bauer-Furuta invariant to nonsimply connected manifolds, and construct a refinement of this invariant. We use it to show that, if $X_1,X_2$ are two homology tori such that the determinants $r_1,r_2$ of them are odd, then the Dehn twist along a $3$-sphere in the neck of $X_1\# X_2$ is not smoothly isotopic to the identity.

Abstract:The notation of torus manifolds were introduced by A. Hattori and M. Masuda. Toric manifolds, quasitoric manifolds, topological toric manifolds, toric origami manifolds and $b$-symplectic toric manifolds are typical examples of torus manifolds with locally standard action. Recently, L. Yu introduced a nice notion topological face ring $\mathbf{k}[Q]$, a generalization of Stanley-Reisener ring, for a nice manifold with corners $Q$. L. Yu applied polyhedral product technique developed by A. Bahri, M. Bendersky, F. Cohon and S. Gilter to show that the equivariant cohomology ring $H^*_T(M)$ of an open torus manifold $M$ with locally standard action is isomorphic to the topological face ring of $M/T$ under the assumption that the free part of the action is a trivial torus bundle. In this paper we show that Yu's formula holds for any open torus manifolds with locally standard action by a different appoach. In addition using our method we give an explicit formula for equivariant Stiefel-Whitney classes and Pontrjagin classes of open torus manifolds with locally standard action.
