Abstract:We characterize permutations whose Bruhat graphs can be drawn in the plane and those whose Bruhat graphs can be drawn in the torus. In particular, we show these properties are characterized by avoiding finitely many permutations.

Abstract:This paper is an exploration of the faithful transitive permutation representations of the orientation-preserving automorphisms groups of highly symmetric toroidal maps and hypermaps. The main theorems of this paper give a list of all possible degrees of these specific groups. This extends prior accomplishments of the authors, wherein their focus was confined to the study of the automorphisms groups of toroidal regular maps and hypermaps. In addition the authors bring out the recently developed {\sc GAP} package {\sc corefreesub} that can be used to find faithful transitive permutation representations of any group. With the aid of this powerful tool, the authors show how Schreier coset graphs of the automorphism groups of toroidal maps and hypermaps can be easily constructed.

Abstract:Multidimensional permutations, or d -permutations, are represented by their diagrams on such that there exists exactly one point per hyperplane that satisfies for and . Bonichon and Morel previously enumerated 3-permutations avoiding small patterns, and we extend their results by first proving four conjectures, which exhaustively enumerate 3-permutations avoiding any two fixed patterns of size 3. We further provide a enumerative result relating 3-permutation avoidance classes with their respective recurrence relations. In particular, we show a recurrence relation for 3-permutations avoiding the patterns 132 and 213, which contributes a new sequence to the OEIS database. We then extend our results to completely enumerate 3-permutations avoiding three patterns of size 3.

Abstract:In 2019, Bóna and Smith introduced the notion of \emph{strong pattern avoidance}, that is, a permutation and its square both avoid a given pattern. In this paper, we enumerate the set of permutations $\pi$ which not only strongly avoid the pattern $312$ or $231$ but also avoid the pattern $\tau$, for $\tau\in S_3$ and some $\tau\in S_4$. One of them is to give a positive answer to a conjecture of Archer and Geary.

Abstract:In this paper, we study pattern avoidances of generalized permutations and show that the number of all generalized permutations avoiding $\pi$ is independent of the choice of $\pi\in S_3$, which extends the classic results on permutations avoiding $\pi\in S_3$. Extending both Dyck path and Riordan path, we introduce the Catalan-Riordan path which turns out to be a combinatorial interpretation of the difference array of Catalan numbers. As applications, we interpret both Motzkin and Riordan numbers in two ways, via semistandard Young tableaux of two rows and generalized permutations avoiding $\pi \in S_3$. Analogous to Lewis's method, we establish a bijection from generalized permutations to rectangular semistandard Young tableaux which will recover several known results in the literature.

Abstract:In a recent paper, Bóna and Smith define the notion of strong avoidance , in which a permutation and its square both avoid a given pattern. In this paper, we generalize this idea to what we call chain avoidance . We say that a permutation avoids a chain of patterns (τ1:τ2:⋯:τk) if the i -th power of the permutation avoids the pattern τi . We enumerate the set of permutations π which avoid the chain (213,312:τ) , i.e., unimodal permutations whose square avoids τ , for τ∈S3 and use this to find a lower bound on the number of permutations that avoid the chain (312:τ) for τ∈S3 . We finish the paper by discussing permutations that avoid longer chains.

Abstract:We enumerate several classes of pattern-avoiding rectangulations. We establish new bijective links with pattern-avoiding permutations, prove that their generating functions are algebraic, and confirm several conjectures by Merino and Mütze. We also analyze a new class of rectangulations, called whirls, using a generating tree.

Spanning Euler Tours in Hypergraphs

Abstract:Motivated by generalizations of de Bruijn cycles to various combinatorial structures (Chung, Diaconis, and Graham), we study various Euler tours in set systems. Let $\mathcal{G}$ be a hypergraph whose corank and rank are $c\geq 3$ and $k$, respetively. The minimum $t$-degree of $\mathcal{G}$ is the fewest number of edges containing every $t$-subset of vertices. An Euler tour (family, respectively) in $\mathcal{G}$ is a (family of, respectively) closed walk(s) that (jointly, respectively) traverses each edge of $\mathcal{G}$ exactly once. An Euler tour is spanning if it traverses all the vertices of $\mathcal{G}$. We show that $\mathcal{G}$ has an Euler family if its incidence graph is $(1+\lceil k/c \rceil)$-edge-connected. Provided that the number of vertices of $\mathcal{G}$ meets a reasonable lower bound, and either $2$-degree is at least $k$ or $t$-degree is at least one for $t\geq 3$, we show that $\mathcal{G}$ has a spanning Euler tour. To exhibit the usefulness of our results, we solve a number of open problems concerning ordering blocks of a design (these have applications in other fields such as erasure-correcting codes). Answering a question of Horan and Hurlbert, we show that a Steiner quadruple system of order $n$ has a (spanning) Euler tour if and only if $n\geq 8$ and $n\equiv 2,4 \pmod 6$, and we prove a similar result for all Steiner systems, as well as all designs except for 2-designs whose index $\lambda$ is less than the largest block size. We nearly solve a conjecture of Dewar and Stevens on the existence of universal cycles in pairwise balanced designs. Motivated by R.L. Graham's question on the existence of Hamiltonian cycles in block-intersection graphs of Steiner triple systems, we establish the Hamiltonicity of the block-intersection graph of a large family of (not necessarily uniform) designs. All our results are constructive and of polynomial time complexity.

Periodic colorings and orientations in infinite graphs

Abstract:We study the existence of periodic colorings and orientations in locally finite graphs. A coloring or orientation of a graph $G$ is periodic if the resulting colored or oriented graph is quasi-transitive, meaning that $V(G)$ has finitely many orbits under the action of the group of automorphisms of $G$ preserving the coloring or the orientation. When such a periodic coloring or orientation of $G$ exists, $G$ itself must be quasi-transitive and it is natural to investigate when quasi-transitive graphs have such periodic colorings or orientations. We provide examples of Cayley graphs with no periodic orientation or non-trivial coloring, and examples of quasi-transitive graphs of treewidth 2 without periodic orientation or proper coloring. On the other hand we show that every quasi-transitive graph $G$ of bounded pathwidth has a periodic proper coloring with $\chi(G)$ colors and a periodic orientation. We relate these problems with techniques and questions from symbolic dynamics and distributed computing and conclude with a number of open problems.

Pattern avoidance and the fundamental bijection

Abstract:The fundamental bijection is a bijection $\theta:\mathcal{S}_n\to\mathcal{S}_n$ in which one uses the standard cycle form of one permutation to obtain another permutation in one-line form. In this paper, we enumerate the set of permutations $\pi \in \mathcal{S}_n$ that avoids a pattern $\sigma \in \mathcal{S}_3$, whose image $\theta(\pi)$ also avoids $\sigma$. We additionally consider what happens under repeated iterations of $\theta$; in particular, we enumerate permutations $\pi \in \mathcal{S}_n$ that have the property that $\pi$ and its first $k$ iterations under $\theta$ all avoid a pattern $\sigma$. Finally, we consider permutations with the property that $\pi=\theta^2(\pi)$ that avoid a given pattern $\sigma$, and end the paper with some directions for future study.

Abstract:We study a Turán-type problem on edge-colored complete graphs. We show that for any $r$ and $t$, any sufficiently large $r$-edge-colored complete graph on $n$ vertices with $\Omega(n^{2-1/tr^r})$ edges in each color contains a member from certain finite family $\mathcal{F}_t^r$ of $r$-edge-colored complete graphs. We conjecture that $\Omega(n^{2-1/t})$ edges in each color are sufficient to find a member from ${\mathcal{F}}_t^r$. A result of Girão and Narayanan confirms this conjecture when $r=2$. Next, we study a related problem where the corresponding Turán threshold is linear. We call an edge-coloring of a path $P_{rk}$ balanced if each color appears $k$ times in the coloring. We show that any $3$-edge-coloring of a large complete graph with $kn+o(n)$ edges in each color contains a balanced $P_{3k}$. This is tight up to a constant factor of $2$. For more colors, the problem becomes surprisingly more delicate. Already for $r=7$, we show that even $n^{2-o(1)}$ edges from each color does not guarantee existence of a balanced $P_{7k}$.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph and $F:V(G)\to2^N$ be a set function. The graph $G$ is said to be \emph{F-avoiding} if there exists an orientation $O$ of $G$ such that $d^+_O(v)\notin F(v)$ for every $v\in V(G)$, where $d^+_O(v)$ denotes the out-degree of $v$ in the directed graph $G$ with respect to $O$. In this paper, we give a Tutte-type good characterization to decide the $F$-avoiding problem when for every $v\in V(G)$, $|F(v)|\leq \frac{1}{2}(d_G(v)+1)$ and $F(v)$ contains no two consecutive integers. Our proof also gives a simple polynomial algorithm to find a desired orientation. As a corollary, we prove the following result: if for every $v\in V(G)$, $|F(v)|\leq \frac{1}{2}(d_G(v)+1)$ and $F(v)$ contains no two consecutive integers, then $G$ is $F$-avoiding. This partly answers a problem proposed by Akbari et. al.(2020)
Pattern avoidance in nonnesting permutations

Abstract:Nonnesting permutations are permutations of the multiset $\{1,1,2,2,\dots,n,n\}$ that avoid subsequences of the form $abba$ for any $a\neq b$. These permutations have recently been studied in connection to noncrossing (also called quasi-Stirling) permutations, which are those that avoid subsequences of the form $abab$, and in turn generalize the well-known Stirling permutations. Inspired by the work by Archer et al. on pattern avoidance in noncrossing permutations, we consider the analogous problem in the nonnesting case. We enumerate nonnesting permutations that avoid each set of two or more patterns of length 3, as well as those that avoid some sets of patterns of length 4. We obtain closed formulas and generating functions, some of which involve unexpected appearances of the Catalan and Fibonacci numbers. Our proofs rely on decompositions, recurrences, and bijections.

Abstract:We say that an unordered rooted labeled forest avoids the pattern π ∈ S n if the sequence obtained from the labels along the path from the root to any vertex does not contain a subsequence that is in the same relative order as π . We enumerate several classes of forests that avoid certain sets of permutations, including the set of unimodal forests, via bijections with set partitions with certain properties. We also define and investigate an analog of Wilf equivalence for forests.

Toroidal Hitomezashi Patterns

Abstract:Extending a proposal of Defant and Kravitz [Discrete Mathematics, \textbf{1}, 347 (2024)], we define Hitomezashi patterns and loops on a torus and provide several structural results for such loops. For a given pattern, our main theorems give optimal residual information regarding the Hitomezashi loop length, loop count, as well as possible homology classes of such loops. Special attention is paid to toroidal Hitomezashi patterns that are symmetric with respect to the diagonal $x = y$, where we establish a novel connection between Hitomezashi and knot theory.

Abstract:The Burling sequence is a sequence of triangle-free graphs of increasing chromatic number. Each of them is isomorphic to the intersection graph of a set of axis-parallel boxes in $R^3$. These graphs were also proved to have other geometrical representations: intersection graphs of line segments in the plane, and intersection graphs of frames, where a frame is the boundary of an axis-aligned rectangle in the plane. We call Burling graph every graph that is an induced subgraph of some graph in the Burling sequence. We give five new equivalent ways to define Burling graphs. Three of them are geometrical, one is of a more graph-theoretical flavour and one is more axiomatic.

Abstract:The theory of limits of permutations leads to limit objects called permutons, which are certain Borel measures on the unit square. We prove that permutons avoiding a given permutation of order k have a particularly simple structure. Namely, almost every fiber of the disintegration of the permuton (say, along the x‐axis) consists only of atoms, at most (k−1) many, and this bound is sharp. We use this to give a simple proof of the "permutation removal lemma."

Abstract:This paper investigates circle patterns with obtuse exterior intersection angles on surfaces of finite topological type. We characterise the images of the curvature maps and establish several equivalent conditions regarding long time behaviors of Chow-Luo's combinatorial Ricci flows for these patterns. As consequences, several generalizations of circle pattern theorem are obtained. Moreover, our approach suggests a computational method to find the desired circle patterns.

Abstract:In this paper, we study pattern avoidance for stabilized-interval-free (SIF) permutations. These permutations are contained in the set of indecomposable permutations and in the set of derangements. We enumerate pattern-avoiding SIF permutations for classical and pairs of patterns of size 3. In particular, for the patterns 123 and 231, we rely on combinatorial arguments and the fixed-point distribution of general permutations avoiding these patterns. We briefly discuss 123-avoiding permutations with two fixed points and offer a conjecture for their enumeration by the distance between their fixed points. For the pattern 231, we also give a direct argument that uses a bijection to ordered forests.
