Abstract:Context. While rotation has a major impact on stellar structure and evolution, its effects are not well understood. Thanks to high- quality and long timebase photometric observations obtained with recent space missions, we are now able to study stellar rotation more precisely. Aims. We aim to constrain radial differential rotation profiles in gamma Doradus (gamma Dor) stars, and to develop new theoretical seismic diagnosis for such stars with rapid and potentially non-uniform rotation. Methods. We derive a new asymptotic description which accounts for the impact of weak differential near-core rotation on gravity- mode period spacings. The theoretical predictions are illustrated from pulsation computations with the code GYRE and compared with observations of gamma Dor stars. When possible, we also derive the surface rotation rates in these stars by detecting and analysing signatures of rotational modulation, and compute the core-to-surface rotation ratios. Results. Stellar rotation has to be strongly differential before its effects on period spacing patterns can be detected, unless multiple period spacing patterns can be compared. Six stars in our sample exhibit a single unexplained period spacing pattern of retrograde modes. We hypothesise that these are Yanai modes. Finally, we find signatures of rotational spot modulation in the photometric data of eight targets. Conclusions. If only one period spacing pattern is detected and analysed for a star, it is difficult to detect differential rotation. A rigidly rotating model will often provide the best solution. Differential rotation can only be detected when multiple period spacing patterns have been found for a single star or its surface rotation rate is known as well. This is the case for eight stars in our sample, revealing surface-to-core rotation ratios between 0.95 and 1.05.

Abstract:The $\beta$ Cephei pulsators are massive main-sequence stars, presenting low radial-order modes. These modes probe in particular the chemical gradient at the edge of the convective core. They hence give constraints on macroscopic processes, such as hydrodynamic or magnetic instabilities. Yet, it is not clear to what extent the seismic inferences depend on the physics employed for the stellar modelling or on the observational dataset. We investigate the observational constraints which are necessary to provide accurate constraints on the mixing processes in $\beta$ Cephei stars. We explore the importance of the identification of the angular degree of modes. Depending on the quality of the seismic dataset and the classical constraints, we estimate the precision achievable with asteroseismology. We propose a method extending the forward approach classically used to model $\beta$ Cephei stars The probability distributions of the asteroseismic-derived stellar parameters are obtained. With these distributions, we provide a systemic way to estimate the errors of the modelling. A particular effort is made to also include the theoretical uncertainties of the models. We then estimate the accuracy and precision of asteroseismology for $\beta$ Cephei stars in a series of hare and hound exercises. The exercises show that a set of four to five oscillation frequencies with an identified angular degree already leads to accurate inferences on the stellar parameters. Without the identification of the modes, the addition of other classical observational constraints allow to succeed the seismic modelling. When the micro-physics of the star and stellar models used for the modelling differ, the constraints derived on the internal structure remain valid if expressed in terms of acoustic variables. The characterisation of the mixing processes at the boundary of the convective core remain model-dependent.

Effects of rotation on the evolution and asteroseismic properties of red giants

Abstract:The influence of rotation on the properties of red giants is studied in the context of the asteroseismic modelling of these stars. While red giants exhibit low surface rotational velocities, we find that the rotational history of the star has a large impact on its properties during the red giant phase. In particular, for stars massive enough to ignite He burning in non-degenerate conditions, rotational mixing induces a significant increase of the stellar luminosity and shifts the location of the core helium burning phase to a higher luminosity in the HR diagram. This of course results in a change of the seismic properties of red giants at the same evolutionary state. As a consequence the inclusion of rotation significantly changes the fundamental parameters of a red giant star as determined by performing an asteroseismic calibration. In particular rotation decreases the derived stellar mass and increases the age. Depending on the rotation law assumed in the convective envelope and on the initial velocity of the star, non-negligible values of rotational splitting can be reached, which may complicate the observation and identification of non-radial oscillation modes for red giants exhibiting moderate surface rotational velocities. By comparing the effects of rotation and overshooting, we find that the main-sequence widening and the increase of the H-burning lifetime induced by rotation (Vini=150 km/s) are well reproduced by non-rotating models with an overshooting parameter of 0.1, while the increase of luminosity during the post-main sequence evolution is better reproduced by non-rotating models with overshooting parameters twice as large. This is due to the fact that rotation not only increases the size of the convective core but also changes the chemical composition of the radiative zone.

Abstract:Rotation matters for the life of a star. It causes a multitude of dynamical phenomena in the stellar interior during a star's evolution and its effects accumulate until the star dies. All stars rotate at some level but those born with a mass above about 1.3 times the mass of the Sun rotate rapidly during more than 90% of their nuclear lifetime. Internal rotation guides the angular momentum and chemical element transport throughout the stellar interior. These transport processes change over time as the star evolves. The cumulative effects of stellar rotation and its induced transport processes determine the helium content of the core by the time it exhausts its hydrogen isotopes. The amount of helium at that stage also guides the heavy element yields by the end of the star's life. A proper theory of stellar evolution and any realistic models for the chemical enrichment of galaxies, must be based on observational calibrations of stellar rotation and of the induced transport processes. Since a few years, asteroseismology offers such calibrations, for single and binary stars. We review the current status of asteroseismic modelling of rotating stars for different stellar mass regimes, in an accessible way for the non-expert. While doing so, we describe exciting opportunities sparked by asteroseismology for various domains in astrophysics, touching upon topics from exoplanetary science to galactic structure and evolution towards gravitational wave physics. Along the way, we provide ample sneak-previews for future 'industrialised' applications of asteroseismology to slow and rapid rotators, from exploitation of combined Kepler, TESS, PLATO, Gaia, and spectroscopy surveys. We end the review with a list of take away messages and achievements of asteroseismology, which are of relevance for many fields of astrophysics.

Abstract:Rotationally-split modes can provide valuable information about the internal rotation profile of stars. This has been used for years to infer the internal rotation behavior of the Sun. The present work discusses the potential additional information that rotationally splitting asymmetries may provide when studying the internal rotation profile of stars. We present here some preliminary results of a method, currently under development, which intends: 1) to understand the variation of the rotational splitting asymmetries in terms of physical processes acting on the angular momentum distribution in the stellar interior, and 2) how this information can be used to better constrain the internal rotation profile of the stars. The accomplishment of these two objectives should allow us to better use asteroseismology as a test-bench of the different theories describing the angular momentum distribution and evolution in the stellar interiors.

Abstract:High precision photometry and spectroscopy of low-mass stars reveal a variety of properties standard stellar evolution cannot predict. Rotation, an essential ingredient of stellar evolution, is a step towards resolving the discrepancy between model predictions and observations. The first rotating stellar model, continuously tracing a low-mass star from the pre-main sequence onto the horizontal branch, is presented. The predicted luminosity functions of stars of globular clusters and surface rotation velocities on the horizontal branch are discussed.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Red giant stars host solar-like oscillations which have mixed character, being sensitive to conditions both in the outer convection zone and deep within the interior. The properties of these modes are sensitive to both core rotation and magnetic fields. While asteroseismic studies of the former have been done on a large scale, studies of the latter are currently limited to tens of stars. We aim to produce the first large catalogue of both magnetic and rotational perturbations. We jointly constrain these parameters by devising an automated method for fitting the power spectra directly. We successfully apply the method to 302 low-luminosity red giants. We find a clear bimodality in core rotation rate. The primary peak is at $\delta \nu _{\mathrm{rot}}$ = 0.32 $\mu$Hz, and the secondary at $\delta \nu _{\mathrm{rot}}$ = 0.47 $\mu$Hz. Combining our results with literature values, we find that the percentage of stars rotating much more rapidly than the population average increases with evolutionary state. We measure magnetic splittings of 2$\sigma$ significance in 23 stars. While the most extreme magnetic splitting values appear in stars with masses $\gt $1.1 M$_{\odot }$, implying they formerly hosted a convective core, a small but statistically significant magnetic splitting is measured at lower masses. Asymmetry between the frequencies of a rotationally split multiplet has previously been used to diagnose the presence of a magnetic perturbation. We find that of the stars with a significant detection of magnetic perturbation, 43 per cent do not show strong asymmetry. We find no strong evidence of correlation between the rotation and magnetic parameters.

Abstract:Understanding the internal rotation of low mass stars all along their evolution is of primary interest when studying their rotational dynamics, internal mixing and magnetic field generation. In this context, helio- and asteroseismology probe angular velocity gradients deep within solar type stars at different evolutionary stages. Still the rotation close to the center of such stars on the main sequence is hardly detectable and the dynamical interaction of the radiative core with the surface convective envelope is not well understood. For instance, the influence of the differential rotation profile sustained by convection and applied as a boundary condition to the radiation zone is very important in the formation of tachoclines. In this work, we study a 2D hydrodynamical model of a radiative core when an imposed, solar or anti-solar, differential rotation is applied at the upper boundary. This model uses the Boussinesq approximation and we find that the shear induces a cylindrical differential rotation associated with a unique cell of meridional circulation in each hemisphere (counterclockwise when the shear is solar-like and clockwise when it is anti-solar). The results are discussed in the framework of seismic observables (internal rotation rate, core-to-surface rotation ratio) while perspectives to improve our modeling by including magnetic field or transport by internal gravity waves will be discussed.
Visibility of unstable oscillation modes in a rapidly rotating B star

Abstract:Space missions like CoRoT and Kepler have provided numerous new observations of stellar oscillations in a multitude of stars by high precision photometry. This work compares the observed rich oscillation spectrum of the rapidly rotating B3 IV star HD 43317 with the first results obtained by a new method to calculate unstable oscillation modes in rapidly rotating stars in order to see whether some of the observed modes can be identified. The new numerical method consists of two parts. We first search for modes resonant with a prescribed forcing symmetry by moving through relevant regions of complex frequency space and monitoring any increase of the stellar response to the applied forcing and zooming in onto the resonance. These resonant non-adiabatic 2D-solutions are then fed into a 2D relaxation code with the same equations but without forcing terms. The complex oscillation frequency used in the forcing is now no longer prescribed, but added as an extra unknown. The corresponding free oscillation mode is usually obtained after a few ($<10$) iterations with only minor adjustment of the complex oscillation frequency. To compare with the observed light variations we calculate the `visibility' of the found unstable oscillation modes, taking into account the cancellation of the various parts of the radiating oscillating stellar surface as seen by the observer. The frequencies of unstable axisymmetric g-modes, which have the highest visibility, appear to nearly coincide with the observed largest amplitude photometric variations of HD 43317, making an identification of the latter oscillations as $m$=0 modes plausible. The identification of $m$=1 g-modes is less straightforward, while many of the unstable even $m$=2 g-modes may correspond to observed weaker photometric variations.

Abstract:We model the stochastic excitation of acoustic modes in solar-like pulsators taking into account the action of differential rotation. We derive the theoretical formalism for the stochastic excitation with differential rotation and make use of rotating convection Mixing-Length Theory to assess how the convective velocity is modified by rotation. Finally, we use the stellar structure and evolution code MESA combined with the stellar pulsation code GYRE to compute acoustic modes amplitudes.

Abstract:Context: With the launch of space missions devoted to asteroseismology (like COROT), the scientific community will soon have accurate measurements of pulsation frequencies in many rapidly rotating stars. Aims: The present work focuses on the effects of rotation on pulsations of rapidly rotating stars when both the Coriolis and centrifugal accelerations require a non-perturbative treatment. Method: We develop a 2-dimensional spectral numerical approach which allows us to compute acoustic modes in centrifugally distorted polytropes including the full influence of the Coriolis force. This method is validated through comparisons with previous studies, and the results are shown to be highly accurate. Results: In the frequency range considered and with COROT's accuracy, we establish a domain of validity for perturbative methods, thus showing the need for complete calculations beyond <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://v.sin" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> i = 50 km/s for a R = 2.3 R_\odot, M = 1.9 M_\odot polytropic star. Furthermore, it is shown that the main differences between complete and perturbative calculations come essentially from the centrifugal distortion.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We present the comprehensive analysis of the high-amplitude $\delta$ Sct star V2367 Cygni. First, we perform the frequency analysis for the whole available set of the Kepler and TESS photometry. Most of the frequency peaks are harmonics or combinations of the three known independent frequencies with the highest amplitudes, i.e.$\nu _1=5.661\,06$ d$^{-1}$, $\nu _2=7.14898$ d$^{-1}$, and $\nu _3=7.77557$ d$^{-1}$. The total number of independent frequencies is 26 and 25 from the Kepler and TESS light curve, respectively. Then, using the ${\it UBVRI}$ time-series photometry, we unambiguously identify the dominant frequency $\nu _1$ as the radial mode, whereas in the case of frequencies $\nu _2$ and $\nu _3$ the most probable mode degrees are $\ell =0$ or $\ell =2$. However, only the frequency $\nu _2$ can be associated with a radial mode, and only if higher order effects of rotation are taken into account. Including the rotational mode coupling, we constructed complex seismic models of V2367 Cyg, which fit $\nu _1$ and $\nu _2$ as radial modes, and reproduce the amplitude of bolometric flux variations (the parameter f) for the dominant mode. The empirical values of f are derived from the ${\it UBVRI}$ amplitudes and phases. We rely on the Bayesian analysis based on Monte Carlo simulations to derive constraints on evolutionary stage, mass, rotation, overshooting from the convective core, and efficiency of convective transport in the envelope. Our seismic analysis clearly indicates that V2367 Cyg is in a post-main sequence phase of evolution. This is the first extensive seismic modelling that takes into account the effect of rotational coupling between pulsation modes.

Evolution of rotation in rapidly rotating early-type stars during the main sequence with 2D models

Abstract:The understanding of the rotational evolution of early-type stars is deeply related to that of anisotropic mass and angular momentum loss. In this paper, we aim to clarify the rotational evolution of rapidly rotating early-type stars along the main sequence (MS). We have used the 2D ESTER code to compute and evolve isolated rapidly rotating early-type stellar models along the MS, with and without anisotropic mass loss. We show that stars with $Z=0.02$ and masses between $5$ and $7~M_\odot$ reach criticality during the main sequence provided their initial angular velocity is larger than 50% of the Keplerian one. More massive stars are subject to radiation-driven winds and to an associated loss of mass and angular momentum. We find that this angular momentum extraction from the outer layers can prevent massive stars from reaching critical rotation and greatly reduce the degree of criticality at the end of the MS. Our model includes the so-called bi-stability jump of the $\dot{M}-T_{\rm eff}$ relation of 1D-models. This discontinuity now shows up in the latitude variations of the mass-flux surface density, endowing rotating massive stars with either a single-wind regime (no discontinuity) or a two-wind regime (a discontinuity). In the two-winds-regime, mass loss and angular momentum loss are strongly increased at low latitudes inducing a faster slow-down of the rotation. However, predicting the rotational fate of a massive star is difficult, mainly because of the non-linearity of the phenomena involved and their strong dependence on uncertain prescriptions. Moreover, the very existence of the bi-stability jump in mass-loss rate remains to be substantiated by observations.

Towards age/rotation/magnetic activity relation with seismology

Abstract:The knowledge of stellar ages directly impacts the characterization of a planetary system as it puts strong constraints on the moment when the system was born. Unfortunately, the determination of precise stellar ages is a very difficult task. Different methods can be used to do so (based on isochrones or chemical element abundances) but they usually provide large uncertainties. During its evolution a star goes through processes leading to loss of angular momentum but also changes in its magnetic activity. Building rotation, magnetic, age relations would be an asset to infer stellar ages model independently. Several attempts to build empirical relations between rotation and age (namely gyrochronology) were made with a focus on cluster stars where the age determination is easier and for young stars on the main sequence. For field stars, we can now take advantage of high-precision photometric observations where we can perform asteroseismic analyses to improve the accuracy of stellar ages. Furthermore, the variability in the light curves allow us to put strong constraints on the stellar rotation and magnetic activity. By combining these precise measurements, we are on the way of understanding and improving relations between magnetic activity, rotation, and age, in particular at different stages of stellar evolution. I will review the status on gyrochronology relationships based on observations of young cluster stars. Then I will focus on solar-like stars and describe the inferences on stellar ages, rotation, and magnetism that can be provided by high-quality photometric observations such as the ones of the Kepler mission, in particular through asteroseismic analyses.

Abstract:We applied the ATON code to the computation of detailed grids of standard (non--rotating) and rotating Pre--Main Sequence (PMS) models and computed their adiabatic oscillation spectra,with the aim of exploring the seismic properties of young stars. We adopt a method similar to the matching mode method by Guenther and Brown making use, when necessary, also of our rotating evolutionary code to compute the models for PMS stars. The method is described by a preliminary application to the frequency spectrum of two PMS stars (85 and 278) in the young open cluster NGC 6530. For the Star 85 we confirm, with self--consistent rotating models, previous interpretation of the data, attributing three close frequencies to the mode n=4, l=1 and m=0,+1,--1. For the Star 278 we find a different fit for the frequencies, corresponding to a model within the original error box of the star, and dispute the possibility thatthis star has an effective temperature much cooler that the red boundary of the radial instability strip.
A multisite photometric study of two unusual Beta Cep stars: the magnetic V2052 Oph and the massive rapid rotator V986 Oph

Abstract:We report a multisite photometric campaign for the Beta Cep stars V2052 Oph and V986 Oph. 670 hours of high-quality differential photoelectric Stromgren, Johnson and Geneva time-series photometry were obtained with eight telescopes on five continents during 182 nights. Frequency analyses of the V2052 Oph data enabled the detection of three pulsation frequencies, the first harmonic of the strongest signal, and the rotation frequency with its first harmonic. Pulsational mode identification from analysing the colour amplitude ratios confirms the dominant mode as being radial, whereas the other two oscillations are most likely l=4. Combining seismic constraints on the inclination of the rotation axis with published magnetic field analyses we conclude that the radial mode must be the fundamental. The rotational light modulation is in phase with published spectroscopic variability, and consistent with an oblique rotator for which both magnetic poles pass through the line of sight. The inclination of the rotation axis is 54o <i< 58o and the magnetic obliquity 58o <beta< 66o. The possibility that V2052 Oph has a magnetically confined wind is discussed. The photometric amplitudes of the single oscillation of V986 Oph are most consistent with an l=3 mode, but this identification is uncertain. Additional intrinsic, apparently temporally incoherent, light variations of V986 Oph are reported. Different interpretations thereof cannot be distinguished at this point, but this kind of variability appears to be present in many OB stars. The prospects of obtaining asteroseismic information for more rapidly rotating Beta Cep stars, which appear to prefer modes of higher l, are briefly discussed.

Abstract:Classical Cepheid variable stars are high-sensitivity probes of stellar evolution and fundamental tracers of cosmic distances. While rotational mixing significantly affects the evolution of Cepheid progenitors (intermediate-mass stars), the impact of the resulting changes in stellar structure and composition on Cepheids on their pulsational properties is hitherto unknown. Here we present the first detailed pulsational instability analysis of stellar evolution models that include the effects of rotation, for both fundamental mode and first overtone pulsation. We employ Geneva evolution models spanning a three-dimensional grid in mass (1.7 - 15 $M_\odot$), metallicity (Z = 0.014, 0.006, 0.002), and rotation (non-rotating, average & fast rotation). We determine (1) hot and cool instability strip (IS) boundaries taking into account the coupling between convection and pulsation, (2) pulsation periods, and (3) rates of period change. We investigate relations between period and (a) luminosity, (b) age, (c) radius, (d) temperature, (e) rate of period change, (f) mass, (g) the flux-weighted gravity-luminosity relation (FWGLR). We confront all predictions aside from those for age with observations, finding generally excellent agreement. We tabulate period-luminosity relations (PLRs) for several photometric pass-bands and investigate how the finite IS width, different IS crossings, metallicity, and rotation affect PLRs. We show that a Wesenheit index based on H, V, and I photometry is expected to have the smallest intrinsic PLR dispersion. We confirm that rotation resolves the Cepheid mass discrepancy. Period-age relations depend significantly on rotation (rotation increases Cepheid ages), offering a straightforward explanation for evolved stars in binary systems that cannot be matched by conventional isochrones assuming a single age. Finally, we show that Cepheids obey a tight FWGLR.

Abstract:The space missions Kepler and TESS provided a large number of highly detailed time series for main-sequence stars, including gamma Doradus stars. Additionally, numerous gamma Doradus stars are to be observed in the near future thanks to the upcoming PLATO mission. In gamma Doradus stars, gravito-inertial modes in the radiative zone and inertial modes in the convective core can interact resonantly, which translates into the appearance of dip structures in the period spacing of modes. Those dips are information-rich, as they are related to the star core characteristics. Our aim is to characterise these dips according to stellar properties and thus to develop new seismic diagnostic tools to constrain the internal structure of gamma Doradus stars, especially their cores. We used the two-dimensional oscillation code TOP to compute sectoral prograde and axisymmetric dipolar modes in gamma Doradus stars at different rotation rates and evolutionary stages. We then characterised the dips we obtained by their width and location on the period spacing diagram. We found that the width and the location of the dips depend quasi-linearly on the ratio of the rotation rate and the Brunt-Väisälä frequency at the core interface. This allowed us to determine empirical relations between the width and location of dips as well as the resonant inertial mode frequency in the core and the Brunt-Väisälä frequency at the interface between the convective core and the radiative zone. We propose an approximate theoretical model to support and discuss these empirical relations. The empirical relations we established could be applied to dips observed in data, which would allow for the estimation of frequencies of resonant inertial modes in the core and of the Brunt-Väisälä jump at the interface between the core and the radiative zone. As those two parameters are both related to the evolutionary stage of the star, their determination could lead to more accurate estimations of stellar ages.
