Abstract:Quantifying individual performance in the game of Cricket is critical for team selection in International matches. The number runs scored by batsmen and wickets taken by bowlers serves as a natural way of quantifying the performance of a cricketer. Traditionally the batsmen and bowlers are rated on their batting or bowling average respectively. However in a game like Cricket it is always important the manner in which one scores the runs or claims a wicket. Scoring runs against a strong bowling line-up or delivering a brilliant performance against a team with strong batting line-up deserves more credit. A player's average is not able to capture this aspect of the game. In this paper we present a refined method to quantify the `quality' of runs scored by a batsman or wickets taken by a bowler. We explore the application of Social Network Analysis (SNA) to rate the players in a team performance. We generate directed and weighted network of batsmen-bowlers using the player-vs-player information available for Test cricket and ODI cricket. Additionally we generate network of batsmen and bowlers based on the dismissal record of batsmen in the history of cricket - Test (1877-2011) and ODI (1971-2011). Our results show that {\it M Muralitharan} is the most successful bowler in history of Cricket. Our approach could potentially be applied in domestic matches to judge a player's performance which in turn pave the way for a balanced team selection for International matches.

A mathematical modelling approach to one-day cricket batting orders

Abstract:While scoring strategies and player performance in cricket have been studied, there has been little published work about the influence of batting order with respect to One-Day cricket. We apply a mathematical modelling approach to compute efficiently the expected performance (runs distribution) of a cricket batting order in an innings. Among other applications, our method enables one to solve for the probability of one team beating another or to find the optimal batting order for a set of 11 players. The influence of defence and bowling ability can be taken into account in a straightforward manner. In this presentation, we outline how we develop our Markov Chain approach to studying the progress of runs for a batting order of non- identical players along the lines of work in baseball modelling by Bukiet et al., 1997. We describe the issues that arise in applying such methods to cricket, discuss ideas for addressing these difficulties and note limitations on modelling batting order for One-Day cricket. By performing our analysis on a selected subset of the possible batting orders, we apply the model to quantify the influence of batting order in a game of One Day cricket using available real-world data for current players. Abstract:In the sport of cricket, player batting ability is traditionally measured using the batting average. However, the batting average fails to measure both short-term changes in ability that occur during an innings, and long-term changes that occur between innings, due to the likes of age and experience in various match conditions. We derive and fit a Bayesian parametric model that employs a Gaussian process to measure and predict how the batting abilities of cricket players vary and fluctuate over the course of entire playing careers. The results allow us to better quantify and predict player batting ability, compared with both traditional cricket statistics, such as the batting average, and more complex models, such as the official International Cricket Council ratings.

Similarities among top one day batters: physics-based quantification

Abstract:Assessment of the performance of a player in any sport is very much needed to determine the ranking of players and make a solid team with the best players. Besides these, fans, journalists, sports persons, and sports councils often analyse the performances of current and retired players to identify the best players of all time. Here, we study the performance of all-time top batters in one-day cricket using physics-based statistical methods. The batters are selected in this study who possess either higher total runs or a high number of centuries. It is found that the total runs increases linearly with the innings number at the later stage of the batter carrier, and the runs rate estimated from the linear regression analysis also increases linearly with the average runs. The probability of non-scoring innings is found to be a negligibly small number (i.e., $\leq 0.1$ ) for each batter. Furthermore, based on innings-wise runs, we have computed the six-dimensional probability distribution vector for each player. Two components of the probability distribution vector vary linearly with average runs. The component representing the probability of scoring runs less than 50 linearly decreases with the average runs. In contrast, the probability of scoring runs greater than or equal to 100 and less than 150 linearly increases with the average runs. We have also estimated the entropy to assess the diversity of a player. Interestingly, the entropy varies linearly with the average runs, giving rise to two clusters corresponding to the old and recent players. Furthermore, the angle between two probability vectors is calculated for each pair of players to measure the similarities among the players. It is found that some of the players are almost identical to each other.

Abstract:The speed-accuracy tradeoffs are prevalent in a wide range of physical systems. In this paper, we demonstrate speed-accuracy tradeoffs in the game of cricket, where 'batters' score runs on the balls bowled by the 'bowlers'. It is shown that the run scoring rate by a batter and the probability of dismissal follow a power-law relation. Due to availability of extensive data, game of cricket is an excellent model for the study of the effect of speed-accuracy tradeoff on the overall performance of the system. It is shown that the exponent of the power-law governs the nature of the adaptability of the player in different conditions and can be used for their assessment. Further, it is demonstrated that the players with extreme values of the power-law exponent are better suited for different playing conditions as compared to the ones with moderate values. These findings can be utilized to identify the potential of the cricket players for different game formats and can further help team management in devising strategies for the best outcomes with a given set of players.

Abstract:This paper describes the applications of network methods for understanding interaction within members of sport <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://teams.We" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> analyze the interaction of batsmen in International Cricket matches. We generate batting partnership network (BPN) for different teams and determine the exact values of clustering coefficient, average degree, average shortest path length of the networks and compare them with the Erd\text{ö}s-R\text{é}nyi model. We observe that the networks display small-world behavior and are disassortative in nature. We find that most connected batsman is not necessarily the most central and most central players are not necessarily the one with high batting averages. We study the community structure of the BPNs and identify each player's role based on inter-community and intra-community links. We observe that {\it Sir DG Bradman}, regarded as the best batsman in Cricket history does not occupy the central position in the network $-$ the so-called connector hub. We extend our analysis to quantify the performance, relative importance and effect of removing a player from the team, based on different centrality scores.

Abstract:In this paper, we model one-day international cricket games as Markov processes, applying forward and inverse Reinforcement Learning (RL) to develop three novel tools for the game. First, we apply Monte-Carlo learning to fit a nonlinear approximation of the value function for each state of the game using a score-based reward model. We show that, when used as a proxy for remaining scoring resources, this approach outperforms the state-of-the-art Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method used in professional matches by 3 to 10 fold. Next, we use inverse reinforcement learning, specifically a variant of guided-cost learning, to infer a linear model of rewards based on expert performances, assumed here to be play sequences of winning teams. From this model we explicitly determine the optimal policy for each state and find this agrees with common intuitions about the game. Finally, we use the inferred reward models to construct a game simulator that models the posterior distribution of final scores under different policies. We envisage our prediction and simulation techniques may provide a fairer alternative for estimating final scores in interrupted games, while the inferred reward model may provide useful insights for the professional game to optimize playing strategy. Further, we anticipate our method of applying RL to this game may have broader application to other sports with discrete states of play where teams take turns, such as baseball and rounders.

Abstract:Advancements in technology have recently allowed us to collect and analyse large-scale fine-grained data about human performance, drastically changing the way we approach sports. Here, we provide the first comprehensive analysis of individual and team performance in One-Day International cricket, one of the most popular sports in the world. We investigate temporal patterns of individual success by quantifying the location of the best performance of a player and find that they can happen at any time in their career, surrounded by a burst of comparable top performances. Our analysis shows that long-term performance can be predicted from early observations and that temporary exclusions of players from teams are often due to declining performances but are also associated with strong comebacks. By computing the duration of streaks of winning performances compared to random expectations, we demonstrate that teams win and lose matches consecutively. We define the contributions of specialists such as openers, all-rounders and wicket-keepers and show that a balanced performance from multiple individuals is required to ensure team success. Finally, we measure how transitioning to captaincy in the team improves the performance of batsmen, but not that of bowlers. Our work emphasizes how individual endeavours and team dynamics interconnect and influence collective outcomes in sports.

Anomalous Diffusion and Long-range Correlations in the Score Evolution of the Game of Cricket

Abstract:We investigate the time evolution of the scores of the second most popular sport in world: the game of cricket. By analyzing the scores event-by-event of more than two thousand matches, we point out that the score dynamics is an anomalous diffusive process. Our analysis reveals that the variance of the process is described by a power-law dependence with a super-diffusive exponent, that the scores are statistically self-similar following a universal Gaussian distribution, and that there are long-range correlations in the score evolution. We employ a generalized Langevin equation with a power-law correlated noise that describe all the empirical findings very well. These observations suggest that competition among agents may be a mechanism leading to anomalous diffusion and long-range correlation.

Abstract:Cricket, "a Gentleman's Game", is a prominent sport rising worldwide. Due to the rising competitiveness of the sport, players and team management have become more professional with their approach. Prior studies predicted individual performance or chose the best team but did not highlight the batter's potential. On the other hand, our research aims to evaluate a player's impact while considering his control in various circumstances. This paper seeks to understand the conundrum behind this impactful performance by determining how much control a player has over the circumstances and generating the "Effective Runs",a new measure we propose. We first gathered the fundamental cricket data from open-source datasets; however, variables like pitch, weather, and control were not readily available for all matches. As a result, we compiled our corpus data by analyzing the commentary of the match summaries. This gave us an insight into the particular game's weather and pitch conditions. Furthermore, ball-by-ball inspection from the commentary led us to determine the control of the shots played by the batter. We collected data for the entire One Day International career, up to February 2022, of 3 prominent cricket players: Rohit G Sharma, David A Warner, and Kane S Williamson. Lastly, to prepare the dataset, we encoded, scaled, and split the dataset to train and test Machine Learning Algorithms. We used Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), Polynomial Regression, Support Vector Regression (SVR), Decision Tree Regression, and Random Forest Regression on each player's data individually to train them and predict the Impact the player will have on the game. Multiple Linear Regression and Random Forest give the best predictions accuracy of 90.16 percent and 87.12 percent, respectively.

Abstract:Duckworth-Lewis (D/L) method is the incumbent rain rule used to decide the result of a limited overs cricket match should it not be able to reach its natural conclusion. Duckworth and Lewis (1998) devised a two factor relationship between the numbers of overs a team had remaining and the number of wickets they had lost in order to quantify the percentage resources a team has at any stage of the match. As number of remaining overs decrease and lost wickets increase the resources are expected to decrease. The resource table which is still being used by ICC (International Cricket Council) for 50 overs cricket match suffers from lack of monotonicity both in numbers of overs left and number of wickets lost. We apply Bayesian inference to build a resource table which overcomes the non monotonicity problem of the current D/L resource table and show that it gives better prediction for teams in first innings score and hence it is more suitable for using in rain affected matches.

Abstract:Misère games in general have little algebraic structure, but if the games under consideration have properties then some algebraic structure re-appears. In 2023, the class of Blocking games was identified. Misère Cricket Pitch was suggested as a problem at the Games-at-Dal-2023 Workshop, and is the first game in this class to be studied. Normal play Cricket Pitch was analyzed in 2011. The game involves flattening `bumps' with a roller. The main reduction of normal play, reducing every bump by $2$, is not applicable in misère play. In this paper, we find the outcomes of single (linear) component \textsc{cricket pitch} positions, where the proof is based on first considering the bumps to the left and to the right of the roller separately. We also give reductions, true in Blocking games in general, of positions that occur in simple positions of Cricket Pitch. These allow us to find the outcomes of the disjunctive sum of single bump positions. At the time of writing, it was not possible to find game values since the relevant theory for Blocking games does not exist.

Abstract:Cricket is a game played between two teams which consists of eleven players each. Nowadays cricket game is becoming more and more popular in Bangladesh and other South Asian Countries. Before a match people are very enthusiastic about team squads and "Which players are playing today?", "How well will MR. X perform today?" are the million dollar questions before a big match. This article will propose a method using statistical data analysis for recommending a national team squad. Recent match scorecards for domestic and international matches played by a specific team in recent years are used to recommend the ideal squad. Impact point or rating points of all players in different conditions are calculated and the best ones from different categories are chosen to form optimal line-ups. To evaluate the efficiency of impact point system, it will be tested with real time match data to see how much accuracy it gives.

Abstract:The field of quantitative analytics has transformed the world of sports over the last decade. To date, these analytic approaches are statistical at their core, characterizing what is and what was, while using this information to drive decisions about what to do in the future. However, as we often view team sports, such as soccer, hockey, and baseball, as pairwise win-lose encounters, it seems natural to model these as zero-sum games. We propose such a model for one important class of sports encounters: a baseball at-bat, which is a matchup between a pitcher and a batter. Specifically, we propose a novel model of this encounter as a zero-sum stochastic game, in which the goal of the batter is to get on base, an outcome the pitcher aims to prevent. The value of this game is the on-base percentage (i.e., the probability that the batter gets on base). In principle, this stochastic game can be solved using classical approaches. The main technical challenges lie in predicting the distribution of pitch locations as a function of pitcher intention, predicting the distribution of outcomes if the batter decides to swing at a pitch, and characterizing the level of patience of a particular batter. We address these challenges by proposing novel pitcher and batter representations as well as a novel deep neural network architecture for outcome prediction. Our experiments using Kaggle data from the 2015 to 2018 Major League Baseball seasons demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed approach.

Predicting the outcome of a cricket match has become a fundamental problem as we are advancing in the field of machine learning. Multiple researchers have tried to predict the outcome of a cricket match or a tournament, or to predict the performance of players during a match, or to predict the players who should be selected as per their current performance, form, morale, etc. using machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques keeping in mind extensive detailing, features, and parameters. Abstract:Cricket is the second most popular sport after soccer in terms of viewership. However, the assessment of individual player performance, a fundamental task in team sports, is currently primarily based on aggregate performance statistics, including average runs and wickets taken. We propose Context-Aware Metric of player Performance, CAMP, to quantify individual players' contributions toward a cricket match outcome. CAMP employs data mining methods and enables effective data-driven decision-making for selection and drafting, coaching and training, team line-ups, and strategy development. CAMP incorporates the exact context of performance, such as opponents' strengths and specific circumstances of games, such as pressure situations. We empirically evaluate CAMP on data of limited-over cricket matches between 2001 and 2019. In every match, a committee of experts declares one player as the best player, called Man of the M}atch (MoM). The top two rated players by CAMP match with MoM in 83\% of the 961 games. Thus, the CAMP rating of the best player closely matches that of the domain experts. By this measure, CAMP significantly outperforms the current best-known players' contribution measure based on the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.

Abstract:In the sport of cricket, variations in a player's batting ability can usually be measured on one of two scales. Short-term changes in ability that are observed during a single innings, and long-term changes that are witnessed between matches, over entire playing careers. To measure long-term variations, we derive a Bayesian parametric model that uses a Gaussian process to measure and predict how the batting abilities of international cricketers fluctuate between innings. The model is fitted using nested sampling given its high dimensionality and for ease of model comparison. Generally speaking, the results support an anecdotal description of a typical sporting career. Young players tend to begin their careers with some raw ability, which improves over time as a result of coaching, experience and other external circumstances. Eventually, players reach the peak of their career, after which ability tends to decline. The model provides more accurate quantifications of current and future player batting abilities than traditional cricketing statistics, such as the batting average. The results allow us to identify which players are improving or deteriorating in terms of batting ability, which has practical implications in terms of player comparison, talent identification and team selection policy.

Abstract:In a competitive sport, every little thing matters. Yet, many sports leave some large levers out of the reach of the teams, and in the hands of fate. In cricket, world's second most popular sport by some measures, one such lever---the toss---has been subject to much recent attention. Using a large novel dataset of 44,224 cricket matches, we estimate the impact of winning the toss on the probability of winning. The data suggest that winning the toss increases the chance of winning by a small ($\sim$ 2.8\%) but significant margin. The advantage varies heftily and systematically, by how closely matched the competing teams are, and by playing conditions---tautologically, winning the toss in conditions where the toss grants a greater advantage, for e.g., in day and night matches, has a larger impact on the probability of winning.

Abstract:Inefficient markets allow investors to consistently outperform the market. To demonstrate that inefficiencies exist in sports betting markets, we created a betting algorithm that generates above market returns for the NFL, NBA, NCAAF, NCAAB, and WNBA betting markets. To formulate our betting strategy, we collected and examined a novel dataset of bets, and created a non-parametric win probability model to find positive expected value situations. As the United States Supreme Court has recently repealed the federal ban on sports betting, research on sports betting markets is increasingly relevant for the growing sports betting industry.

Abstract:Player selection is one the most important tasks for any sport and cricket is no exception. The performance of the players depends on various factors such as the opposition team, the venue, his current form etc. The team management, the coach and the captain select 11 players for each match from a squad of 15 to 20 players. They analyze different characteristics and the statistics of the players to select the best playing 11 for each match. Each batsman contributes by scoring maximum runs possible and each bowler contributes by taking maximum wickets and conceding minimum runs. This paper attempts to predict the performance of players as how many runs will each batsman score and how many wickets will each bowler take for both the teams. Both the problems are targeted as classification problems where number of runs and number of wickets are classified in different ranges. We used naïve bayes, random forest, multiclass SVM and decision tree classifiers to generate the prediction models for both the problems. Random Forest classifier was found to be the most accurate for both the problems.
