Abstract:We study constructions of vector fields with properties which are characteristic to Reeb vector fields of contact forms. In particular, we prove that all closed oriented odd-dimensional manifold have geodesible vector fields.

Abstract:Right-handed and Reeb vector fields are two rich classes of vector fields on closed, oriented three-manifolds. Prior work of Dehornoy and Florio–Hryniewicz has produced many examples of Reeb vector fields which are right-handed. We prove a result in the other direction. We show that the closed two-form associated with a volume-preserving right-handed vector field is contact-type. This implies that any volume-preserving right-handed vector field is equal to a Reeb vector field after multiplication by a positive smooth function. Combining our result with theorems of Ghys and Taubes shows that any volume-preserving right-handed vector field has a global surface of section.

Geodesic and conformally Reeb vector fields on flat 3-manifolds

Abstract:A unit vector field on a Riemannian manifold $M$ is called geodesic if all of its integral curves are geodesics. We show, in the case of $M$ being a flat 3-manifold not equal to $\mathbb{E}^3$, that every such vector field is tangent to a 2-dimensional totally geodesic foliation. Furthermore, it is shown that a geodesic vector field $X$ on a closed flat 3-manifold is (up to rescaling) the Reeb vector field of a contact form if and only if there is a contact structure transverse to $X$ that is given as the orthogonal complement of some other geodesic vector field. An explicit description of the lifted contact structures (up to diffeomorphism) on the 3-torus is given in terms of the volume of $X$. Finally, similar results for non-closed flat 3-manifolds are discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, we provide new and simpler proofs of two theorems of Gluck and Harrison on contact structures induced by great circle or line fibrations. Furthermore, we prove that a geodesic vector field whose Jacobi tensor is parallel along flow lines (e.g. if the underlying manifold is locally symmetric) induces a contact structure if the 'mixed' sectional curvatures are nonnegative, and if a certain nondegeneracy condition holds. Additionally, we prove that in dimension three, contact structures admitting a Reeb flow which is either periodic, isometric, or free and proper, must be universally tight. In particular, we generalise an earlier result of Geiges and the author, by showing that every contact form on $\mathbb{R}^3$ whose Reeb vector field spans a line fibration is necessarily tight. Furthermore, we provide a characterisation of isometric Reeb vector fields. As an application, we recover a result of Kegel and Lange on Seifert fibrations spanned by Reeb vector fields, and we classify closed contact $3$-manifolds with isometric Reeb flows (also known as $R$-contact manifolds) up to diffeomorphism.

Abstract:We introduce and study a geometric heat flow to find Killing vector fields on closed Riemannian manifolds with positive sectional curvature. We study its various properties, prove the global existence of the solution to this flow, discuss its convergence and possible applications, and its relation to the Navier-Stokes equations on manifolds and Kazdan-Warner-Bourguignon-Ezin identity for conformal Killing vector fields. We also provide two new criterions on the existence of Killing vector fields. A similar flow to finding holomorphic vector fields on Kähler manifolds will be studied by Li and Liu (2014).

Abstract:In this paper we deal with the existence of periodic orbits of geodesible vector fields on closed 3-manifolds. A vector field is geodesible if there exists a Riemannian metric on the ambient manifold making its orbits geodesics. In particular, Reeb vector fields and vector fields that admit a global section are geodesible. We will classify the closed 3-manifolds that admit aperiodic volume preserving real analytic geodesible vector fields, and prove the existence of periodic orbits for real analytic geodesible vector fields (not volume preserving), when the 3-manifold is not a torus bundle over the circle. We will also prove the existence of periodic orbits of C2 geodesible vector fields in some closed 3-manifolds.

Abstract:It is well-known that the classical Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem [C] can be interpreted as an index theorem for de Rham-Hodge operators (cf. [BGV] and [LM]) and that it is nontrivial only for even dimensional manifolds. This paper arose from an attempt to search an odd dimensional analogue of this index theorem. Recall that the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem is closely related to the famous Poincare-Hopf index formula expressing the Euler number as the sum of indices of singularities of a tangent vector field. Now for odd dimensional manifolds, or more generally for manifolds with vanishing Euler number, we take the advantage that another result of Hopf asserts that there always exist nowhere zero vector fields (see e.g. Steenrod [S]). Thus let M be an odd dimensional oriented closed manifold and let V be a nowhere zero vector field on M . Let γ be the one dimensional oriented vector bundle over M generated by V . Then TM/γ carries a canonically induced orientation. Let e(TM/γ) be the Euler class of TM/γ. For any integral element ω in H1(M,Q), we will take 〈ωe(TM/γ), [M ]〉 as our substitute for the Euler class appeared in the Gauss-Bonnet-Chern theorem. The main result of this paper gives an analytic formula for this number as the index of certain elliptic Toeplitz operators. In fact, a general odd index theory has already been developed by BaumDouglas [BD] who pointed out that the associated index can be computed

Abstract:This paper explores the properties of projective vector fields on semi-Riemannian manifolds. The main result establishes that if a projective vector field P on such a manifold is also a conformal vector field with potential function ψ and the vector field ζ dual to dψ does not change its causal character, then P is homothetic, or ζ is a light-like vector field. Additionally, it is shown that a complete Riemannian manifold admits a projective vector field that is also conformal and non-Killing if and only if it is locally Euclidean. The paper also presents other results related to the characterization of Killing and parallel vector fields using the Ricci curvature and the Hessian of the function given by the inner product of the vector field.

Abstract:A Reeb graph is a graphical representation of a scalar function on a topological space that encodes the topology of the level sets. A Reeb space is a generalization of the Reeb graph to a multiparameter function. In this paper, we propose novel constructions of Reeb graphs and Reeb spaces that incorporate the use of a measure. Specifically, we introduce measure-theoretic Reeb graphs and Reeb spaces when the domain or the range is modeled as a metric measure space (i.e.,~a metric space equipped with a measure). Our main goal is to enhance the robustness of the Reeb graph and Reeb space in representing the topological features of a scalar field while accounting for the distribution of the measure. We first introduce a Reeb graph with local smoothing and prove its stability with respect to the interleaving distance. We then prove the stability of a Reeb graph of a metric measure space with respect to the measure, defined using the distance to a measure or the kernel distance to a measure, respectively.

Abstract:Stable Hamiltonian structures generalize contact forms and define a volume-preserving vector field known as the Reeb vector field. We study two aspects of Reeb vector fields defined by stable Hamiltonian structures on 3-manifolds: on one hand, we classify all the examples with finitely many periodic orbits under a non-degeneracy condition; on the other, we give sufficient conditions for the existence of a supporting broken book decomposition and for the existence of a Birkhoff section.

Abstract:In this paper, first we consider that the conformal vector field $\mathbf{X}$ is identical with the Reeb vector field $\varsigma$ and next, assume that $\mathbf{X}$ is pointwise collinear with %the Reeb vector field $\varsigma$, in both cases it is shown that the manifold $\mathbf{N}^{2m+1}$ becomes a Kenmotsu manifold and $\mathbf{N}^{2m+1}$ is locally a warped product $\mathbf{N}' \times_{f} \mathbf{M}^{2m}$, where $\mathbf{M}^{2m}$ is an almost Kähler manifold, $\mathbf{N}'$ is an open interval with coordinate t, and $f = ce^{t}$ for some positive constant c. Beside these, we prove that if a $(\verb"k",\boldsymbol{\mu})'$-almost Kenmotsu manifold admits a Killing vector field $\mathbf{X}$, then either it is locally a warped product of an almost Kähler manifold and an open interval or $\mathbf{X}$ is a strict infinitesimal contact transformation. Furthermore, we also investigate $\boldsymbol{\eta}$-Ricci-Yamabe soliton with conformal vector fields on $(\verb"k",\boldsymbol{\mu})'$-almost Kenmotsu manifolds and finally, we construct an example.

Abstract:For Reeb vector fields on closed 3-manifolds, cylindrical contact homology is used to show that the existence of a set of closed Reeb orbit with certain knotting/linking properties implies the existence of other Reeb orbits with other knotting/linking properties relative to the original set. We work out a few examples on the 3-sphere to illustrate the theory, and describe an application to closed geodesics on $S^2$ (a version of a result due to Angenent).

Abstract:In this paper we use broken book decompositions to study Reeb flows on closed $3$-manifolds. We show that if the Liouville measure of a nondegenerate contact form can be approximated by periodic orbits, then there is a Birkhoff section for the associated Reeb flow. In view of Irie's equidistribution theorem, this is shown to imply that the set of contact forms whose Reeb flows have a Birkhoff section contains an open and dense set in the $C^\infty$-topology. We also show that the set of contact forms whose Reeb flows have positive topological entropy is open and dense in the $C^\infty$-topology.

Invariant Sets and Hyperbolic Closed Reeb Orbits

Abstract:We investigate the effect of a hyperbolic (or, more generally, isolated as an invariant set) closed Reeb orbit on the dynamics of a Reeb flow on the $(2n-1)$-dimensional standard contact sphere, extending two results previously known for Hamiltonian diffeomorphisms to the Reeb setting. In particular, we show that under very mild dynamical convexity type assumptions, the presence of one hyperbolic closed orbit implies the existence of infinitely many simple closed Reeb orbits. The second main result of the paper is a higher-dimensional Reeb analogue of the Le Calvez-Yoccoz theorem, asserting that no closed orbit of a non-degenerate dynamically convex Reeb pseudo-rotation is locally maximal, i.e., isolated as an invariant set. The key new ingredient of the proofs is a Reeb variant of the crossing energy theorem.

Recovering contact forms from boundary data

Abstract:Let $X$ be a compact connected smooth manifold with boundary. The paper deals with contact $1$-forms $\beta$ on $X$, whose Reeb vector fields $v_\beta$ admit Lyapunov functions $f$. We prove that any odd-dimensional $X$ admits such a contact form. We tackle the question: how to recover $X$ and $\beta$ from the appropriate data along the boundary $\partial X$? We describe such boundary data and prove that they allow for a reconstruction of the pair $(X, \beta)$, up to a diffeomorphism of $X$. We use the term ``holography" for the reconstruction. We say that objects or structures inside $X$ are {\it holographic}, if they can be reconstructed from their $v_\beta$-flow induced ``shadows" on the boundary $\partial X$. We also introduce numerical invariants that measure how ``wrinkled" the boundary $\partial X$ is with respect to the $v_\beta$-flow and study their holographic properties under the contact forms preserving embeddings of equidimensional contact manifolds with boundary. We get some ``non-squeezing results" about such contact embedding, which are reminiscent of Gromov's non-squeezing theorem in symplectic geometry.

In this paper we characterize those smooth functions on closed manifolds whose Reeb spaces have the structure of a finite graph. We also give several explicit examples of smooth functions on closed manifolds such that they themselves or their Reeb spaces have some interesting properties.

Abstract:We introduce another distinguished closed vector field on a Riemannian manifold which we shall call torse-forming-like and we relate it to other kind of vector fields such as torse-forming, self-torse-forming and semi-torse-forming vector fields. For a warped product manifold, we obtain different types of vector fields on the factor manifolds when the warped product is endowed with a torse-forming-like vector field. We study the nature of the tangential component of such a vector field for some special cases of submanifolds, namely, totally umbilical (in particular, totally geodesic) or having Codazzi (in particular, parallel) shape operator, and we show that the tangential component on a hypersurface of a torse-forming-like vector field is a Killing vector field if and only if the hypersurface is quasi-umbilical. In particular, if the hypersurface is isometrically immersed in a real space-form, then it is a space of quasi-constant curvature, hence, it is a quasi-Einstein manifold. Finally, we characterize the metallic shaped hypersurfaces with the normal direction generated by the normal component of a torse-forming-like vector field having Killing tangential component to the hypersurface.

Abstract:We show that $\phi$-invariant submanifolds of metric contact pairs with orthogonal characteristic foliations make constant angles with the Reeb vector fields. Our main result is that for the normal case such submanifolds of dimension at least $2$ are all minimal. We prove that an odd-dimensional $\phi$-invariant submanifold of a metric contact pair with orthogonal characteristic foliations inherits a contact form with an almost contact metric structure, and this induced structure is contact metric if and only if the submanifold is tangent to one Reeb vector field and orthogonal to the other one. Furthermore we show that the leaves of the two characteristic foliations of the differentials of the contact pair are minimal. We also prove that when one Reeb vector field is Killing and spans one characteristic foliation, the metric contact pair is a product of a contact metric manifold with $\mathbb{R}$.
