Abstract:Supergrid graphs contain grid graphs and triangular grid graphs as their subgraphs. The Hamiltonian cycle and path problems for general supergrid graphs were known to be NP-complete. A graph is called Hamiltonian if it contains a Hamiltonian cycle, and is said to be Hamiltonian connected if there exists a Hamiltonian path between any two distinct vertices in it. In this paper, we first prove that every L-shaped supergrid graph always contains a Hamiltonian cycle except one trivial condition. We then verify the Hamiltonian connectivity of L-shaped supergrid graphs except few conditions. The Hamiltonicity and Hamiltonian connectivity of L-shaped supergrid graphs can be applied to compute the minimum trace of computerized embroidery machine and 3D printer when a L-like object is printed. Finally, we present a linear-time algorithm to compute the longest (s, t)-path of L-shaped supergrid graph given two distinct vertices s and t.

Abstract:A supergrid graph is a finite vertex-induced subgraph of the infinite graph whose vertex set consists of all points of the plane with integer coordinates and in which two vertices are adjacent if the difference of their x or y coordinates is not larger than 1. The Hamiltonian path (cycle) problem is to determine whether a graph contains a simple path (cycle) in which each vertex of the graph appears exactly once. This problem is NP-complete for general graphs and it is also NP-complete for general supergrid graphs. Despite the many applications of the problem, it is still open for many classes, including solid supergrid graphs and supergrid graphs with some holes. A graph is called Hamiltonian connected if it contains a Hamiltonian path between any two distinct vertices. In this paper, first we will study the Hamiltonian cycle property of C-shaped supergrid graphs, which are a special case of rectangular supergrid graphs with a rectangular hole. Next, we will show that C-shaped supergrid graphs are Hamiltonian connected except few conditions. Finally, we will compute a longest path between two distinct vertices in these graphs. The Hamiltonian connectivity of C-shaped supergrid graphs can be applied to compute the optimal stitching trace of computer embroidery machines, and construct the minimum printing trace of 3D printers with a C-like component being printed.

Abstract:An s , t Hamiltonian path P for an rectangular grid graph is a Hamiltonian path from the top-left corner s to the bottom-right corner t . We define an operation "square-switch" on s , t Hamiltonian paths P affecting only those edges of P that lie in some small (2 units by 2 units) square subgrid of . We prove that when applied to suitable locations, the result of the square-switch is another s , t Hamiltonian path. Then we use square-switch to achieve a reconfiguration result for a subfamily of s , t Hamiltonian paths we call simple paths , that has the minimum number of bends for each maximal internal subpath connecting any two vertices on the boundary of the grid graph. We give an algorithmic proof that the Hamiltonian path graph whose vertices represent simple paths is connected when edges arise from the square-switch operation: our algorithm reconfigures any given initial simple path P to any given target simple path in ( ) time and ( ) space using at most square-switches, where is the number of vertices in the grid graph and hence in any Hamiltonian path P for . Thus the diameter of the simple path graph is at most 5 mn / 4 for the square-switch operation, which we show is asymptotically tight for this operation.

Abstract:Kronk introduced the $l$-path hamiltonianicity of graphs in 1969. A graph is $l$-path Hamiltonian if every path of length not exceeding $l$ is contained in a Hamiltonian cycle. We have shown that if $P=uvz$ is a 2-path of a 2-connected, $k$-regular graph on at most $2k$ vertices and $G - V(P)$ is connected, then there must exist a Hamiltonian cycle in $G$ that contains the 2-path $P$. In this paper, we characterize a class of graphs that illustrate the sharpness of the bound $2k$. Additionally, we show that by excluding the class of graphs, both 2-connected, $k$-regular graphs on at most $2k + 1$ vertices and 3-connected, $k$-regular graphs on at most $3k-6$ vertices satisfy that there is a Hamiltonian cycle containing the 2-path $P$ if $G\setminus V(P)$ is connected.

Abstract:We describe some necessary conditions for the existence of a Hamiltonian path in any graph (in other words, for a graph to be traceable). These conditions result in a linear time algorithm to decide the Hamiltonian path problem for cactus graphs. We apply this algorithm to several molecular databases to report the numbers of graphs that are traceable cactus graphs.

Abstract:A supergrid graph is a finite induced subgraph of the infinite graph associated with the two-dimensional supergrid. The supergrid graphs contain grid graphs and triangular grid graphs as subgraphs. The Hamiltonian cycle problem for grid and triangular grid graphs was known to be NP-complete. Recently, we have proved the Hamiltonian cycle problem on supergrid graphs to be NP-complete. The Hamiltonian cycle problem on supergrid graphs can be applied to control the stitching trace of computerized sewing machines. In this paper, we will study the Hamiltonian cycle property of linear-convex supergrid graphs which form a subclass of supergrid graphs. A connected graph is called k-connected if there are k vertex-disjoint paths between every pair of vertices, and is called locally connected if the neighbors of each vertex in it form a connected subgraph. In this paper, we first show that any 2-connected, linear-convex supergrid graph is locally connected. We then give constructive proofs to show that any 2-connected, linear-convex supergrid graph contains a Hamiltonian cycle. Based on the constructive proofs, we finally present a linear-time algorithm to construct a Hamiltonian cycle of a 2-connected, linear-convex supergrid graph.

Abstract:A Hamiltonian path (a Hamiltonian cycle) in a graph is a path (a cycle, respectively) that traverses all of its vertices. The problems of deciding their existence in an input graph are well-known to be NP-complete, in fact, they belong to the first problems shown to be computationally hard when the theory of NP-completeness was being developed. A lot of research has been devoted to the complexity of Hamiltonian path and Hamiltonian cycle problems for special graph classes, yet only a handful of positive results are known. The complexities of both of these problems have been open even for $4K_1$-free graphs, i.e., graphs of independence number at most $3$. We answer this question in the general setting of graphs of bounded independence number.

Abstract:For each pair of positive integers $(a,b)$ such that $a \geq 0$ and $b > 1$, the present paper provides a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of Hamiltonian cycles visiting all the vertices of any $k$-dimensional grid $\{0,1\}^k \subset \mathbb{R}^k$ and whose associated Euclidean distance is equal to $\sqrt{a^2+b^2}$. Our solution extends previously stated results in fairy chess on the existence of closed Euclidean $(a,b)$-leapers tours for $2 \times 2 \times \cdots \times 2$ chessboards, where the (Euclidean) knight identifies the $(1,2)$-leaper.

Abstract:In this series of papers, the primary goal is to enumerate Hamiltonian cycles (HC's) on the grid cylinder graphs $P_{m+1}\times C_n$, where $n$ is allowed to grow whilst $m$ is fixed. In Part~I, we studied the so-called non-contractible HC's. Here, in Part~II, we proceed further on to the contractible case. We propose two different novel characterizations of contractible HC's, from which we construct digraphs for enumerating the contractible HC's. Given the impression which the computational data for $m \leq 9$ convey, we conjecture that the asymptotic domination of the contractible HC's versus the non-contractible HC's, among the total number of HC's, depends on the parity of $m$.}

Abstract:A graph is \emph{hamiltonian-connected} if every pair of vertices can be connected by a hamiltonian path, and it is \emph{hamiltonian} if it contains a hamiltonian cycle. We construct families of non-hamiltonian graphs for which the ratio of pairs of vertices connected by hamiltonian paths to all pairs of vertices approaches 1. We then consider minimal graphs that are hamiltonian-connected. It is known that any order-$n$ graph that is hamiltonian-connected must have $\geq 3n/2$ edges. We construct an infinite family of graphs realizing this minimum.

Abstract:The enumeration of Hamiltonian cycles on 2n*2n grids of nodes is a longstanding problem in combinatorics. Previous work has concentrated on counting all cycles. The current work enumerates nonisomorphic cycles -- that is, the number of isomorphism classes (up to all symmetry operations of the square). It is shown that the matrix method used previously can be modified to count cycles with all combinations of reflective and 180-degree rotational symmetry. Cycles with 90-degree rotational symmetry were counted by a direct search, using a modification of Knuth's Dancing Links algorithm. From these counts, the numbers of nonisomorphic cycles were calculated for n<=10.

Abstract:It is a longstanding conjecture that every simple drawing of a complete graph on $n \geq 3$ vertices contains a crossing-free Hamiltonian cycle. We strengthen this conjecture to "there exists a crossing-free Hamiltonian path between each pair of vertices" and show that this stronger conjecture holds for several classes of simple drawings, including strongly c-monotone drawings and cylindrical drawings. As a second main contribution, we give an overview on different classes of simple drawings and investigate inclusion relations between them up to weak isomorphism.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{P}_n$ be the set of all binary paths (i.e., lattice paths with upsteps $u = (1,1)$ and downsteps $d = (1,-1)$) of length $n$ endowed with the pointwise partial ordering (i.e., $P \le Q$ iff the lattice path $P$ lies weakly below $Q$) and let $G_n$ be its Hasse graph. For each path $P \in \mathcal{P}_n$, we denote by $I(P)$ the interval which contains the elements of $\mathcal{P}_n$ less than or equal to $P$, excluding the first two elements of $\mathcal{P}_n$, and by $G(P)$ the subgraph of $G_n$ induced by $I(P)$. In this paper, it is shown that $G(P)$ is Hamiltonian iff $P$ contains at least two peaks and $I(P)$ has equal number of elements with even and odd rank. The last condition is always true for paths ending with an upstep, whereas, for paths ending with a downstep, a simple characterization is given, based on the structure of the path.

Abstract:Finding general conditions which ensure that a graph is Hamiltonian is a central topic in graph theory. An old and well known conjecture in the area states that any $d$-regular $n$-vertex graph $G$ whose second largest eigenvalue in absolute value $\lambda(G)$ is at most $\frac{d}{C}$, for some universal constant $C>0$, has a Hamilton cycle. In this paper, we obtain two main results which make substantial progress towards this problem. Firstly, we settle this conjecture in full when the degree $d$ is at least a small power of $n$. Secondly, in the general case we show that $\lambda(G) \leq \frac{d}{C(\log n)^{1/3}}$ implies the existence of a Hamilton cycle, improving the 20-year old bound of $\frac{d}{ \log^{1-o(1)} n}$ of Krivelevich and Sudakov. We use in a novel way a variety of methods, such as a robust Pósa rotation-extension technique, the Friedman-Pippenger tree embedding with rollbacks and the absorbing method, combined with additional tools and ideas. Our results have several interesting applications, giving best bounds on the number of generators which guarantee the Hamiltonicity of random Cayley graphs, which is an important partial case of the well known Hamiltonicity conjecture of Lovász. They can also be used to improve a result of Alon and Bourgain on additive patterns in multiplicative subgroups.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that every 3-connected claw-free graph such that every induced cycle of length at least 4 has at most 8 edges contained in a triangle is hamiltonian. This implies that every 3-connected $\{K_{1,3}\}\cup \{C_i|i\ge 9\}$-free graph is hamiltonian. We also show that every 3-connected o-heavy graph whose induced cycle of length is at most 8 is hamiltonian and that every 2-connected claw-free graph of longest induced cycle with length at least $n-2$ is hamiltonian. These results are all best possible. As a byproduct, we show that it is NP-complete to determine the length of a longest induced cycle of a line graph.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the problem of approximating the longest path in a grid graph that possesses a square-free 2-factor. By (1) analyzing several characteristics of four types of cross cells and (2) presenting three cycle-merging operations and one extension operation, we propose an algorithm that finds in an n-vertex grid graph G, a long path of length at least 56n+2. Our approximation algorithm runs in quadratic time. In addition to its theoretical value, our work has also an interesting application in image-guided maze generation.
ASP-Completeness of Hamiltonicity in Grid Graphs, with Applications to Loop Puzzles

Abstract:We prove that Hamiltonicity in maximum-degree-3 grid graphs (directed or undirected) is ASP-complete, i.e., it has a parsimonious reduction from every NP search problem (including a polynomial-time bijection between solutions). As a consequence, given k Hamiltonian cycles, it is NP-complete to find another; and counting Hamiltonian cycles is #P-complete. If we require the grid graph's vertices to form a full $m \times n$ rectangle, then we show that Hamiltonicity remains ASP-complete if the edges are directed or if we allow removing some edges (whereas including all undirected edges is known to be easy). These results enable us to develop a stronger "T-metacell" framework for proving ASP-completeness of rectangular puzzles, which requires building just a single gadget representing a degree-3 grid-graph vertex. We apply this general theory to prove ASP-completeness of 38 pencil-and-paper puzzles where the goal is to draw a loop subject to given constraints: Slalom, Onsen-meguri, Mejilink, Detour, Tapa-Like Loop, Kouchoku, Icelom; Masyu, Yajilin, Nagareru, Castle Wall, Moon or Sun, Country Road, Geradeweg, Maxi Loop, Mid-loop, Balance Loop, Simple Loop, Haisu, Reflect Link, Linesweeper; Vertex/Touch Slitherlink, Dotchi-Loop, Ovotovata, Building Walk, Rail Pool, Disorderly Loop, Ant Mill, Koburin, Mukkonn Enn, Rassi Silai, (Crossing) Ichimaga, Tapa, Canal View, Aqre, and Paintarea. The last 14 of these puzzles were not even known to be NP-hard. Along the way, we prove ASP-completeness of some simple forms of Tree-Residue Vertex-Breaking (TRVB), including planar multigraphs with degree-6 breakable vertices, or with degree-4 breakable and degree-1 unbreakable vertices.
