Abstract:An external memory data structure is presented for maintaining a dynamic set of $N$ two-dimensional points under the insertion and deletion of points, and supporting 3-sided range reporting queries and top-$k$ queries, where top-$k$ queries report the $k$~points with highest $y$-value within a given $x$-range. For any constant $0<\varepsilon\leq \frac{1}{2}$, a data structure is constructed that supports updates in amortized $O(\frac{1}{\varepsilon B^{1-\varepsilon}}\log_B N)$ IOs and queries in amortized $O(\frac{1}{\varepsilon}\log_B N+K/B)$ IOs, where $B$ is the external memory block size, and $K$ is the size of the output to the query (for top-$k$ queries $K$ is the minimum of $k$ and the number of points in the query interval). The data structure uses linear space. The update bound is a significant factor $B^{1-\varepsilon}$ improvement over the previous best update bounds for the two query problems, while staying within the same query and space bounds.

Efficient Data Management for Incoherent Ray Tracing.

Abstract:To obtain good performance on the GPU hardware, it is necessary to design algorithms to manage data, access memory under GPU memory hierarchy, and schedule more efficient threads. In this paper, we propose an efficient data management and task management designed for GPU based ray tracing. Due to the dynamic and uncertainty in ray tracing, we design data-management layer and task-management layer combined with fuzzy spatial analysis, use the two-level ray sorting and a ray bucket structure to reorganize ray data, then a warp's threads can be scheduled to access coherent geometry and nodes data, reduce memory bandwidth, and dispatch the data locally. We schedule tasks in data-driven execution according to coherent data, propose an adaptive ray compaction to eliminate inactive threads, maintain task efficiency of threads in a warp, and design two heuristics to decrease the compaction cost. On the basis of it, we also introduce a memory-optimized dynamic traversal management to reduce incoherent memory access, and avoid frequent sorting computation and compaction operations. Our experiments demonstrate all of these work combined can achieve good performance.

Abstract:We present a data structure that supports three-dimensional range reporting queries in $O(\log \log U + (\log \log n)^3+k)$ time and uses $O(n\log^{1+\eps} n)$ space, where $U$ is the size of the universe, $k$ is the number of points in the answer,and $\eps$ is an arbitrary constant. This result improves over the data structure of Alstrup, Brodal, and Rauhe (FOCS 2000) that uses $O(n\log^{1+\eps} n)$ space and supports queries in $O(\log n+k)$ time,the data structure of Nekrich (SoCG'07) that uses $O(n\log^{3} n)$ space and supports queries in $O(\log \log U + (\log \log n)^2 + k)$ time, and the data structure of Afshani (ESA'08) that uses $O(n\log^{3} n)$ space and also supports queries in $O(\log \log U + (\log \log n)^2 + k)$ time but relies on randomization during the preprocessing stage. Our result allows us to significantly reduce the space usage of the fastest previously known static and incremental $d$-dimensional data structures, $d\geq 3$, at a cost of increasing the query time by a negligible $O(\log \log n)$ factor.

Orthogonal Range Searching on the RAM, Revisited

Abstract:We present several new results on one of the most extensively studied topics in computational geometry, orthogonal range searching. All our results are in the standard word RAM model for points in rank space: ** We present two data structures for 2-d orthogonal range emptiness. The first achieves O(n lglg n) space and O(lglg n) query time. This improves the previous results by Alstrup, Brodal, and Rauhe(FOCS'00), with O(n lg^eps n) space and O(lglg n) query time, or with O(nlglg n) space and O(lg^2 lg n) query time. Our second data structure uses O(n) space and answers queries in O(lg^eps n) time. The best previous O(n)-space data structure, due to Nekrich (WADS'07), answers queries in O(lg n/lglg n) time. ** For 3-d orthogonal range reporting, we obtain space O(n lg^{1+eps} n) and query time O(lglg n + k), for any constant eps>0. This improves previous results by Afshani (ESA'08), Karpinski and Nekrich (COCOON'09), and Chan (SODA'11), with O(n lg^3 n) space and O(lglg n + k) query time, or with O(n lg^{1+eps} n) space and O(lg^2 lg n + k) query time. This implies improved bounds for orthogonal range reporting in all constant dimensions above 3. ** We give a randomized algorithm for 4-d offline dominance range reporting/emptiness with running time O(n lg n + k). This resolves two open problems from Preparata and Shamos' seminal book: **** given n axis-aligned rectangles in the plane, we can report all k enclosure pairs in O(n lg n + k) expected time. The best known result was an O([n lg n + k] lglg n) algorithm from SoCG'95 by Gupta, Janardan, Smid, and Dasgupta. **** given n points in 4-d, we can find all maximal points in O(n lg n) expected time. The best previous result was an O(n lg n lglg n) algorithm due to Gabow, Bentley, and Tarjan (STOC'84). This implies record time bounds for the maxima problem in all constant dimensions above 4.

Optimal Planar Range Skyline Reporting with Linear Space in External Memory

Abstract:Let P be a set of n points in R^2. Given a rectangle Q = [\alpha_1, \alpha_2] x [\beta_1, \beta_2], a range skyline query returns the maxima of the points in P \cap Q. An important variant is the so-called top-open queries, where Q is a 3-sided rectangle whose upper edge is grounded at y = \infty (that is, \beta_2 = \infty). These queries are crucial in numerous database applications. In internal memory, extensive research has been devoted to designing data structures that can answer such queries efficiently. In contrast, currently there is no clear understanding about their exact complexities in external memory. This paper presents several structures of linear size for answering the above queries with the optimal I/O cost. We show that a top-open query can be solved in O(log_B(n) + k/B) I/Os, where B is the block size and k is the number of points in the query result. The query cost can be made O(log log_B(U) + k/B) when the data points lie in a U x U grid for some integer U >= n, and further lowered to O(1 + k/B) if U = O(n). The same efficiency also applies to 3-sided queries where Q is a right-open rectangle. However, the hardness of the problem increases if Q is a left- or bottom-open 3-sided rectangle. We prove that any linear-size structure must perform \Omega((n/B)^\eps + k/B) I/Os to solve such a query in the worst case, where \eps > 0 can be an arbitrarily small constant. In fact, left- and right-open queries are just as difficult as general (4-sided) queries, for which we give a linear-size structure with query time O((n/B)^\eps + k/B). Interestingly, this indicates that 4-sided range skyline queries have exactly the same hardness as 4-sided range reporting (where the goal is to report simply the whole P \cap Q). That is, the skyline requirement does not alter the problem difficulty at all.

Optimal Color Range Reporting in One Dimension

Abstract:Color (or categorical) range reporting is a variant of the orthogonal range reporting problem in which every point in the input is assigned a \emph{color}. While the answer to an orthogonal point reporting query contains all points in the query range $Q$, the answer to a color reporting query contains only distinct colors of points in $Q$. In this paper we describe an O(N)-space data structure that answers one-dimensional color reporting queries in optimal $O(k+1)$ time, where $k$ is the number of colors in the answer and $N$ is the number of points in the data structure. Our result can be also dynamized and extended to the external memory model.

Improved Time and Space Bounds for Dynamic Range Mode

Abstract:Given an array A of $n$ elements, we wish to support queries for the most frequent and least frequent element in a subrange $[l, r]$ of $A$. We also wish to support updates that change a particular element at index $i$ or insert/ delete an element at index $i$. For the range mode problem, our data structure supports all operations in $O(n^{2/3})$ deterministic time using only $O(n)$ space. This improves two results by Chan et al. \cite{C14}: a linear space data structure supporting update and query operations in $\tilde{O}(n^{3/4})$ time and an $O(n^{4/3})$ space data structure supporting update and query operations in $\tilde{O}(n^{2/3})$ time. For the range least frequent problem, we address two variations. In the first, we are allowed to answer with an element of $A$ that may not appear in the query range, and in the second, the returned element must be present in the query range. For the first variation, we develop a data structure that supports queries in $\tilde{O}(n^{2/3})$ time, updates in $O(n^{2/3})$ time, and occupies $O(n)$ space. For the second variation, we develop a Monte Carlo data structure that supports queries in $O(n^{2/3})$ time, updates in $\tilde{O}(n^{2/3})$ time, and occupies $\tilde{O}(n)$ space, but requires that updates are made independently of the results of previous queries. The Monte Carlo data structure is also capable of answering $k$-frequency queries; that is, the problem of finding an element of given frequency in the specified query range. Previously, no dynamic data structures were known for least frequent element or $k$-frequency queries.

Dynamic Planar Point Location in External Memory

Abstract:In this paper we describe a fully-dynamic data structure for the planar point location problem in the external memory model. Our data structure supports queries in $O(\log_B n(\log\log_B n)^3))$ I/Os and updates in $O(\log_B n(\log\log_B n)^2))$ amortized I/Os, where $n$ is the number of segments in the subdivision and $B$ is the block size. This is the first dynamic data structure with almost-optimal query cost. For comparison all previously known results for this problem require $O(\log_B^2 n)$ I/Os to answer queries. Our result almost matches the best known upper bound in the internal-memory model.

Abstract:We present data-oblivious algorithms in the external-memory model for compaction, selection, and sorting. Motivation for such problems comes from clients who use outsourced data storage services and wish to mask their data access patterns. We show that compaction and selection can be done data-obliviously using $O(N/B)$ I/Os, and sorting can be done, with a high probability of success, using $O((N/B)\log_{M/B} (N/B))$ I/Os. Our methods use a number of new algorithmic techniques, including data-oblivious uses of invertible Bloom lookup tables, a butterfly-like compression network, randomized data thinning, and "shuffle-and-deal" data perturbation. In addition, since data-oblivious sorting is the bottleneck in the "inner loop" in existing oblivious RAM simulations, our sorting result improves the amortized time overhead to do oblivious RAM simulation by a logarithmic factor in the external-memory model.

Abstract:The ranked (or top- k ) document retrieval problem is defined as follows: preprocess a collection {T 1 ,T 2 ,... ,T d } of d strings (called documents) of total length n into a data structure, such that for any given query (P,k) , where P is a string (called pattern) of length p ≥ 1 and k ∈ [1,d] is an integer, the identifiers of those k documents that are most relevant to P can be reported, ideally in the sorted order of their relevance. The seminal work by Hon et al. [FOCS 2009 and Journal of the ACM 2014] presented an O(n) -space (in words) data structure with O(p+k log k) query time. The query time was later improved to O(p+k) [SODA 2012] and further to O(p/ log σn+k ) [SIAM Journal on Computing 2017] by Navarro and Nekrich, where σ is the alphabet size. We revisit this problem in the external memory model and present three data structures. The first one takes O(n) -space and answer queries in O(p/B + log B n + k/B+ log * (n/B) ) I/Os, where B is the block size. The second one takes O(n log * (n/B) ) space and answer queries in optimal O(p/B + log B n + k/B) I/Os. In both cases, the answers are reported in the unsorted order of relevance. To handle sorted top- k document retrieval, we present an O(n log (d/B)) space data structure with optimal query cost.

Dynamic Range Minimum Queries on the Ultra-Wide Word RAM

Abstract:We consider the dynamic range minimum problem on the ultra-wide word RAM model of computation. This model extends the classic $w$-bit word RAM model with special ultrawords of length $w^2$ bits that support standard arithmetic and boolean operation and scattered memory access operations that can access $w$ (non-contiguous) locations in memory. The ultra-wide word RAM model captures (and idealizes) modern vector processor architectures. Our main result is a linear space data structure that supports range minimum queries and updates in $O(\log \log \log n)$ time. This exponentially improves the time of existing techniques. Our result is based on a simple reduction to prefix minimum computations on sequences $O(\log n)$ words combined with a new parallel, recursive implementation of these.

Abstract:With the availability of commercial NVM devices such as Intel Optane DC PMM, it is time to start thinking about applying the existing persistent data structures in practice. This paper considers three practical aspects, which have significant influences on the design of persistent indexes, including functionality, performance and correctness. We design a new persistent index, ROART, based on adaptive radix tree (ART), taking all these practical aspects into account. ROART (i) proposes a leaf compaction method to reduce pointer chasing for range queries, (ii) minimizes persistence overhead with three optimizations, i.e., entry compression, selective metadata persistence and minimally ordered split, and (iii) designs a fast memory management to prevent memory leaks, and eliminates the long recovery time by proposing an instant restart strategy. Evaluations show that ROART outperforms the state-of-the-art radix tree by up to 1.65X and B+-Trees by 1.17 similar to 8.27x respectively.
iRangeGraph: Improvising Range-dedicated Graphs for Range-filtering Nearest Neighbor Search

Abstract:Range-filtering approximate nearest neighbor (RFANN) search is attracting increasing attention in academia and industry. Given a set of data objects, each being a pair of a high-dimensional vector and a numeric value, an RFANN query with a vector and a numeric range as parameters returns the data object whose numeric value is in the query range and whose vector is nearest to the query vector. To process this query, a recent study proposes to build $O(n^2)$ dedicated graph-based indexes for all possible query ranges to enable efficient processing on a database of $n$ objects. As storing all these indexes is prohibitively expensive, the study constructs compressed indexes instead, which reduces the memory consumption considerably. However, this incurs suboptimal performance because the compression is lossy. In this study, instead of materializing a compressed index for every possible query range in preparation for querying, we materialize graph-based indexes, called elemental graphs, for a moderate number of ranges. We then provide an effective and efficient algorithm that during querying can construct an index for any query range using the elemental graphs. We prove that the time needed to construct such an index is low. We also cover an experimental study on real-world datasets that provides evidence that the materialized elemental graphs only consume moderate space and that the proposed method is capable of superior and stable query performance across different query workloads.

Amortized Dynamic Cell-Probe Lower Bounds from Four-Party Communication

Abstract:This paper develops a new technique for proving amortized, randomized cell-probe lower bounds on dynamic data structure problems. We introduce a new randomized nondeterministic four-party communication model that enables "accelerated", error-preserving simulations of dynamic data structures. We use this technique to prove an $\Omega(n(\log n/\log\log n)^2)$ cell-probe lower bound for the dynamic 2D weighted orthogonal range counting problem (2D-ORC) with $n/\mathrm{poly}\log n$ updates and $n$ queries, that holds even for data structures with $\exp(-\tilde{\Omega}(n))$ success probability. This result not only proves the highest amortized lower bound to date, but is also tight in the strongest possible sense, as a matching upper bound can be obtained by a deterministic data structure with worst-case operational time. This is the first demonstration of a "sharp threshold" phenomenon for dynamic data structures. Our broader motivation is that cell-probe lower bounds for exponentially small success facilitate reductions from dynamic to static data structures. As a proof-of-concept, we show that a slightly strengthened version of our lower bound would imply an $\Omega((\log n /\log\log n)^2)$ lower bound for the static 3D-ORC problem with $O(n\log^{O(1)}n)$ space. Such result would give a near quadratic improvement over the highest known static cell-probe lower bound, and break the long standing $\Omega(\log n)$ barrier for static data structures.

Abstract:Multi-Version Concurrency Control (MVCC) is a common mechanism for achieving linearizable range queries in database systems and concurrent data-structures. The core idea is to keep previous versions of nodes to serve range queries, while still providing atomic reads and updates. Existing concurrent data-structure implementations, that support linearizable range queries, are either slow, use locks, or rely on blocking reclamation schemes. We present EEMARQ, the first scheme that uses MVCC with lock-free memory reclamation to obtain a fully lock-free data-structure supporting linearizable inserts, deletes, contains, and range queries. Evaluation shows that EEMARQ outperforms existing solutions across most workloads, with lower space overhead and while providing full lock freedom.
Single Round-trip Hierarchical ORAM via Succinct Indices

Abstract:Access patterns to data stored remotely create a side channel that is known to leak information even if the content of the data is encrypted. To protect against access pattern leakage, Oblivious RAM is a cryptographic primitive that obscures the (actual) access trace at the expense of additional access and periodic shuffling of the server's contents. A class of ORAM solutions, known as Hierarchical ORAM, has achieved theoretically \emph{optimal} logarithmic bandwidth overhead. However, to date, Hierarchical ORAMs are seen as only theoretical artifacts. This is because they require a large number of communication round-trips to locate (shuffled) elements at the server and involve complex building blocks such as cuckoo hash tables. To address the limitations of Hierarchical ORAM schemes in practice, we introduce Rank ORAM; the first Hierarchical ORAM that can retrieve data with a single round-trip of communication (as compared to a logarithmic number in previous work). To support non-interactive communication, we introduce a \emph{compressed} client-side data structure that stores, implicitly, the location of each element at the server. In addition, this location metadata enables a simple protocol design that dispenses with the need for complex cuckoo hash tables. Rank ORAM requires asymptotically smaller memory than existing (non-Hierarchical) state-of-the-art practical ORAM schemes (e.g., Ring ORAM) while maintaining comparable bandwidth performance. Our experiments on real network file-system traces demonstrate a reduction in client memory, against existing approaches, of a factor of~$100$. For example, when {outsourcing} a database of $17.5$TB, required client-memory is only $290$MB vs. $40$GB for standard approaches.

Lock-free Linearizable 1-Dimensional Range Queries

Abstract:Efficient concurrent data structures that support range queries are highly sought-after in a number of application areas. For example, the contemporary big-data processing platforms employ them as in-memory index structures for fast and scalable real-time updates and analytics, where analytics utilizes the range queries. In this paper, we present a generic algorithm to perform linearizable range queries in lock-free ordered 1-dimensional data structures. The algorithm requires single-word atomic compare-and-swap (CAS) primitives. Our method generalizes the lock-free data structure snapshot of Petrank et al. [25]. Fundamentally, we utilize a partial snapshot object derived from the snapshot object of Jayanti [20]. We experimentally evaluate the proposed algorithm in a lock-free linked-list, skip-list and binary search tree (BST). The experiments demonstrate that our algorithm is scalable even in the presence of high percentage of concurrent modify operations and outperforms an existing range search algorithm in lock-free k-ary trees in several scenarios.
Space-Time Tradeoff for Answering Range Queries (extended Abstract)

Abstract:In this paper, we raise and investigate the question of (storage) space- (retrieval) time tradeoff for a static database, in the general framework of Fredman's. As will be seen, such tradeoff results also lead to lower bounds on the complexity of processing a sequence of m INSERT and QUERY instructions. The latter results are incomparable to Fredman's, since the presence of DELETE instructions was crucial for his proof technique. We will present our results in detail in the next few sections. Here we will only mention three main conclusions. Firstly, circular query is shown to be intrinsically hard in the sense that, for some static database with n records, there is a space-time tradeoff TS > n 1 + ε where ε>0; in contrast, orthogonal query can always be implemented with space S=0(n(log n) k ) and time T=0((log n) k ) for fixed k. Furthermore, any algorithm for processing 0(n) INSERT and QUERY instructions must use time Ω(n 1+ε ) in the worst case. Secondly, for the “interval” query, we have determined the space-time tradeoff quite precisely to be T @@@@ α(S,n), where α is the inverse to an Ackermann's function first defined by Tarjan [9]. This is a rare case where the function α arises outside the context of path compression, and is obtained through a totally independent derivation. Thirdly, we prove that, for the interval query, any algorithm to process a sequence of 0(n) INSERT and QUERY must take time Ω((n log n)/(log log n)) in the worst case. This means that one cannot hope to maintain the most efficient static data structure (with retrieval time α(S,n)) in the dynamic case.
Analytic Performance Model of a Main-Memory Index Structure

Abstract:Efficient evaluation of multi-dimensional range queries in a main-memory database is an important, but difficult task. State-of-the-art techniques rely on optimised sequential scans or tree-based structures. For range queries with small result sets, sequential scans exhibit poor asymptotic performance. Also, as the dimensionality of the data set increases, the performance of tree-based structures degenerates due to the curse of dimensionality. Recent literature proposed the Elf, a main-memory structure that is optimised for the case of such multi-dimensional low-selectivity queries. The Elf outperforms other state-of-the-art methods in manually tuned scenarios. However, choosing an optimal parameter configuration for the Elf is vital, since for poor configurations, the search performance degrades rapidly. Consequently, further knowledge about the behaviour of the Elf in different configurations is required to achieve robust performance. In this thesis, we therefore propose a numerical cost model for the Elf. Like all main-memory index structures, the Elf response time is not dominated by disk accesses, refusing a straightforward analysis. Our model predicts the size and shape of the Elf region that is examined during search. We propose that the response time of a search is linear to the size of this region. Furthermore, we study the impact of skewed data distributions and correlations on the shape of the Elf. We find that they lead to behaviour that is accurately describable through simple reductions in attribute cardinality. Our experimental results indicate that for data sets of up to 15 dimensions, our cost model predicts the size of the examined Elf region with relative errors below 5%. Furthermore, we find that the size of the Elf region examined during search predicts the response time with an accuracy of 80%.
