Abstract:As early as 1910, Weyl gave a classification of the singular Sturm–Liouville equation, and divided it into the Limit Point Case and the Limit Circle Case at infinity. This led to the study of singular Sturm–Liouville spectrum theory. With the development of applications, the importance of singular Sturm–Liouville problems with a weighted function becomes more and more significant. This paper focuses on the study of singular Sturm–Liouville problems with a weighted function. Finally, an example of singular Sturm–Liouville problems with a weighted function is given.

On the non-existence of oscillation numbers in Sturm-Liouville theory

Abstract:We prove an old conjecture that relates the existence of non-real eigenvalues of Sturm-Liouville Dirichlet problems on a finite interval to the non-existence of oscillation numbers of its real eigenfunctions, [[6], p.104, Problems 3 and 5]. This extends to the general case, a previous result in [1], [2] where it was shown that the presence of even one pair of non-real eigenvalues implies the non-existence of a positive eigenfunction (or ground state). We also provide estimates on the Haupt and Richardson indices and Haupt and Richardson numbers thereby complementing the original Sturm oscillation theorem with the Haupt-Richardson oscillation theorem discovered over 100 years ago with estimates on the missing oscillation numbers of the real eigenfunctions observed.

Abstract:We investigate the discrete Sturm-Liouville equations. In the present situation, the right hand side of the equation does not give rise to a positive definite quadratic form and we use instead the left hand side to define such a form. We prove in this paper that this form determines a Hilbert space (such problems are called left-definite).

Abstract:The self-adjoint matrix Sturm-Liouville operator on a finite interval with a boundary condition in the general form is studied. We obtain asymptotic formulas for the eigenvalues and the weight matrices of the considered operator. These spectral characteristics play an important role in the inverse spectral theory. Our technique is based on analysis of analytic functions and on the contour integration in the complex plane of the spectral parameter. In addition, we adapt the obtained asymptotic formulas to the Sturm-Liouville operators on a star-shaped graph with two different types of matching conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, we establish an optimal dual version of trace estimate involving angular regularity. Based on this estimate, we get the generalized Morawetz estimates and weighted Strichartz estimates for the solutions to a large class of evolution equations, including the wave and Schrodinger equation. As applications, we prove the Strauss' conjecture with a kind of mild rough data for 2 <= n <= 4, and a result of global well-posedness with small data for some nonlinear Schrodinger equation with L-2-subcritical nonlinearity.

Abstract:We consider the indefinite Sturm-Liouville differential expression \[\mathfrak{a}(f) := - \frac{1}{w}\left( \frac{1}{r} f' \right)',\] where $\mathfrak{a}$ is defined on a finite or infinite open interval $I$ with $0\in I$ and the coefficients $r$ and $w$ are locally summable and such that $r(x)$ and $(\operatorname{sgn} x) w(x)$ are positive a.e. on $I$. With the differential expression $\mathfrak{a}$ we associate a nonnegative self-adjoint operator $A$ in the Krein space $L^2_w(I)$, which is viewed as a coupling of symmetric operators in Hilbert spaces related to the intersections of $I$ with the positive and the negative semi-axis. For the operator $A$ we derive conditions in terms of the coefficients $w$ and $r$ for the existence of a Riesz basis consisting of generalized eigenfunctions of $A$ and for the similarity of $A$ to a self-adjoint operator in a Hilbert space $L^2_{|w|}(I)$. These results are obtained as consequences of abstract results about the regularity of critical points of nonnegative self-adjoint operators in Krein spaces, which are couplings of two symmetric operators acting in Hilbert spaces.

Abstract:We present a complete description on the spectrum and eigenfunctions of the following two point boundary value problem $$(p(x)f')'-(q(x)-\lambda r(x))f=0\;, \;\; 0<x<L \quad ; \quad f'(0)=(\alpha_{1} \lambda + \alpha_{2}) f(0) \quad ; \quad f'(L)=(\beta_{1}\lambda -\beta_{2})f(L), $$ where $\lambda$ and $\alpha_{i}, \beta_{i}$ are spectral and physical parameters. Our survey is focused mainly in the case $\alpha_{1}>0$ and $\beta_{1}<0$, where neither self adjoint operator theorems on Hilbert spaces nor Sturm's comparison results can be used directly. We describe the spectrum and the oscillatory results of the eigenfunctions from a geometrical approach, using a function related to the Prüfer angle. The proofs of the asymptotic results of the eigenvalues and separation theorem of the eigenfunctions are developed through classical second order differential equation tools. Finally, the results on the spectrum of the equation are used for the study of the linear instability of a simple model for the fingering phenomenon on the flooding oil recovery process.

Abstract:We establish a positive product formula for the solutions of the Sturm-Liouville equation $\ell(u) = \lambda u$, where $\ell$ belongs to a general class which includes singular and degenerate Sturm-Liouville operators. Our technique relies on a positivity theorem for possibly degenerate hyperbolic Cauchy problems and on a regularization method which makes use of the properties of the diffusion semigroup generated by the Sturm-Liouville operator. We show that the product formula gives rise to a convolution algebra structure on the space of finite measures, and we discuss whether this structure satisfies the basic axioms of the theory of hypergroups. We introduce the notion of a degenerate hypergroup of full support and improve the known existence theorems for Sturm-Liouville hypergroups. Convolution-type integral equations on weighted Lebesgue spaces are also introduced, and a solvability condition is established.

Abstract:We consider the Navier-Stokes Cauchy problem with an initial datum in a weighted Lebesgue space. The weight is a radial function increasing at infinity. Our study partially follows the ideas of the paper by G.P. Galdi and P. Maremonti "On the stability of steady-state solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space", JMFM, 25 (2023). The authors of the quoted paper consider a spatial study of stability of steady fluid motions. The result hold in 3D and for small data. Here, relatively to the perturbations of the rest state, we generalize the result. We study the nD Navier-Stokes Cauchy problem, n greater than 2. We prove the existence (local) of a unique regular solution. Moreover, the solution enjoys a spatial asymptotic decay whose order of decay is connected to the weight.

Abstract:We find an optimal design of a structure described by a Sturm-Liouville (S-L) problem with a spectral parameter in the boundary conditions. Using an approach from calculus of variations, we determine a set of critical points of a corresponding mass functional. However, these critical points - which we call predesigns - do not necessarily themselves represent meaningful solutions: it is of course natural to expect a mass to be real and positive. This represents a generalization of previous work on the topic in several ways. First, previous work considered only boundary conditions and S-L coefficients under certain simplifying assumptions. Principally, we do not assume that one of the coefficients vanishes as in the previous work. Finally, we introduce a set of solvability conditions on the S-L problem data, confirming that the corresponding critical points represent meaningful solutions we refer to as designs. Additionally, we present a natural schematic for testing these conditions, as well as suggesting a code and several numerical examples. Abstract:We establish some and regularity estimates for a class of weighted parabolic problems in divergence form. The main novelty is that the weights may vanish or explode on a characteristic hyperplane as a power of the distance to . The estimates we obtain are sharp with respect to the assumptions on coefficients and data. Our methods rely on a regularization of the equation and some uniform regularity estimates combined with a Liouville theorem and an approximation argument. As a corollary of our main result, we obtain similar estimates when the degeneracy/singularity of the weight occurs on a regular hypersurface of cylindrical type.

Abstract:We prove Sobolev regularity for distributional solutions to the Dirichlet problem for generators of 2 s -stable processes and exterior data, inhomogeneity in weighted -spaces. This class of operators includes the fractional Laplacian. For these rough exterior data the theory of weak variational solutions is not applicable. Our regularity estimate is robust in the limit which allows us to recover the local theory.

Abstract:Existence results for a Cauchy problem driven by a semilinear differential Sturm-Liouville inclusion are achived by proving, in a preliminary way, an existence theorem for a suitable integral inclusion. In order to obtain this proposition we use a recent fixed point theorem that allows us to work with the weak topology and the De Blasi measure of weak noncompactness. So we avoid requests of compactness on the multivalued terms. Then, by requiring different properties on the map p involved in the Sturm-Liouville inclusion, we are able to establish the existence of both mild solutions and strong ones for the problem examinated. Moreover we focus our attention on the study of controllability for a Cauchy problem governed by a suitable Sturm-Liouville equation. Finally we precise that our results are able to study problems involving a more general version of a semilinear differential Sturm-Liouville inclusion.

Abstract:In this paper, we consider the initial value problem for the mixed Schrödinger equation. For the Schwartz initial data q0(x)∈S(R), by defining a general analytical domain and two reflection coefficients, we ever found an unified long-time asymptotic formula via the Deift–Zhou nonlinear steepest descent method. In this paper, under essentially minimal regularity assumptions on initial data in a much weak weighted Sobolev space q0(x)∈H2,2(R), we apply the ∂̄ steepest descent method to obtain long-time asymptotics for the mixed Schrödinger equation. In the asymptotic expression, the leading order term O(t−1/2) comes from the dispersive part qt + iqxx and the error order O(t−3/4) comes from a ∂̄ equation.
