Abstract:We introduce a method that defines the species (representatives) of inorganic compounds, and studied the statistical distribution of the defined species among space groups (distribution of space groups), by using ICSD (Inorganic Crystal Structure Database). Here we show that the number of formula units in a unit cell gives a natural classification to understand the statistical distribution of crystallographic groups.
Applications
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem this paper attempts to address is the study of the statistical distribution of crystallographic groups using data from the Inorganic Crystal Structure Database (ICSD). Specifically, the authors introduce a method to define species (representatives) of inorganic compounds and study the statistical distribution by examining the distribution of these defined species in space groups. The main objectives of the paper include: 1. **Classification Method**: Naturally classifying crystalline substances by the number of formula units in the unit cell to better understand the statistical distribution of crystallographic groups. 2. **Data Processing**: Extracting and processing data using descriptors from the ICSD database (such as mineral name, compound name, chemical formula, unit cell parameters, space group, etc.). 3. **Species Definition**: Sequentially defining species (representatives) by considering factors such as space group, chemical composition, and unit cell volume. 4. **Statistical Analysis**: Calculating the distribution of different species in point groups and space groups and analyzing their statistical characteristics. Through these steps, the paper aims to provide a systematic method to study and understand the statistical distribution patterns of inorganic crystal structures. This helps to reveal the relationships between different crystal structures and their stability under various conditions.
