Abstract:Ballinger et al. have determined the list of all prism manifolds that are possibly realizable by Dehn surgeries on knots in $S^3$. In this paper, we explicitly find braid words of primitive/Seifert-fibered knots on which surface slope surgeries yield all the prism manifolds listed above. This completes the solution to the prism manifold realization problem.

Abstract:The authors conjectured previously that a knot is nonfibered if and only if its infinite cyclic cover has uncountably many finite covers. We prove the conjecture for a class of knots that includes all knots of genus 1, using techniques from symbolic dynamics.

Abstract:Using the Hatcher-Oertel algorithm for finding boundary slopes of Montesinos knots, we prove the Slope Conjecture and the Strong Slope Conjecture for a family of 3-tangle pretzel knots. More precisely, we prove that the maximal degrees of the colored Jones polynomial of such knots determine a boundary slope as predicted by the Slope Conjecture, and that the linear term in the degrees correspond to the Euler characteristic of an essential surface.

Abstract:We define a new class of plane billiards - the `pensive billiard' - in which the billiard ball travels along the boundary for some distance depending on the incidence angle before reflecting, while preserving the billiard rule of equality of the angles of incidence and reflection. This generalizes so called `puck billiards' proposed by M.Bialy, as well as a `vortex billiard', i.e. the motion of a point vortex dipole in 2D hydrodynamics on domains with boundary. We prove the variational origin and invariance of a symplectic structure for pensive billiards, as well as study their properties including conditions for a twist map, the existence of periodic orbits, etc. We also demonstrate the appearance of both the golden and silver ratios in the corresponding hydrodynamical vortex setting. Finally, we introduce and describe basic properties of pensive outer billiards.

Abstract:The paper studies knots in three dimensional projective space. Our technique for this purpose is to associate a virtual link to a link in projective space so that equivalent projective links go to equivalent virtual links (modulo a special flype move). We can then apply techniques in virtual knot theory to obtain a Jones polynomial for projective links that is equivalent to the known Jones polynomial for them and to apply virtual Khovanov homology and the virtual Rasmussen invariant of Dye, Kaestner, and Kauffman to projective links.

Abstract:Both classical and virtual knots arise as formal Gauss diagrams modulo some abstract moves corresponding to Reidemeister moves. If we forget about both over/under crossings structure and writhe numbers of knots modulo the same Reidemeister moves, we get a dramatic simplification of virtual knots, which kills all classical knots. However, many virtual knots survive after this simplification. We construct invariants of these objects and present their applications to minimality problems of virtual knots as well as some questions related to graph-links. One can easily generalize these results for the orientable case and apply them for solving non-invertibility problems. The main idea behind these invariants is some geometrical construction which reduces the general equivalence to the equivalence only modulo Reidemeister - 2 move.

Abstract:We introduce an invariant of a hyperbolic knot which is a map $\alpha\mapsto \boldsymbol{\Phi}_\alpha(h)$ from $\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}$ to matrices with entries in $\overline{\mathbb{Q}}[[h]]$ and with rows and columns indexed by the boundary parabolic ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ representations of the fundamental group of the knot. These matrix invariants have a rich structure: (a) their $(\sigma_0,\sigma_1)$ entry, where $\sigma_0$ is the trivial and $\sigma_1$ the geometric representation, is the power series expansion of the Kashaev invariant of the knot around the root of unity ${\rm e}^{2\pi{\rm i} \alpha}$ as an element of the Habiro ring, and the remaining entries belong to generalized Habiro rings of number fields; (b) the first column is given by the perturbative power series of Dimofte-Garoufalidis; (c) the columns of $\boldsymbol{\Phi}$ are fundamental solutions of a linear $q$-difference equation; (d) the matrix defines an ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z})$-cocycle $W_\gamma$ in matrix-valued functions on $\mathbb{Q}$ that conjecturally extends to a smooth function on $\mathbb{R}$ and even to holomorphic functions on suitable complex cut planes, lifting the factorially divergent series $\boldsymbol{\Phi}(h)$ to actual functions. The two invariants $\boldsymbol{\Phi}$ and $W_\gamma$ are related by a refined quantum modularity conjecture which we illustrate in detail for the three simplest hyperbolic knots, the $4_1$, $5_2$ and $(-2,3,7)$ pretzel knots. This paper has two sequels, one giving a different realization of our invariant as a matrix of convergent $q$-series with integer coefficients and the other studying its Habiro-like arithmetic properties in more depth.

Abstract:In this work we completely describe the dynamics of triangle tiling billiards. In the first part of this work, we propose a geometric approach of dynamics by introducing natural foliations associated to it. In the second part, we exploit the relationship between triangle tiling billiards and a family of fully flipped $3$-interval exchange transformations on the circle. We give a combinatorial approach of dynamics via renormalization. By uniting the two approaches, we prove several conjectures on the dynamics of triangle tiling billiards. First, we prove the Tree Conjecture and the 4n+2 Conjecture, both concerning the symbolic dynamics of periodic trajectories, and both stated by Baird-Smith, Davis, Fromm and Iyer. Second, we study a family of exceptional trajectories which are closely related to the orbits of minimal Arnoux-Rauzy maps. We prove that all of these exceptional trajectories pass by all tiles, which confirms our own conjecture with P. Hubert on their non-linear escape. Moreover, we use tiling billiards to prove the convergence, up to rescaling, of arithmetic orbits of the Arnoux-Yoccoz map to the Rauzy fractal, conjectured by Hooper and Weiss. All of these conjectures have been stated in print in the last three years.

Abstract:We prove that the billiard claimed to be a possible counterexample to the Birkhoff-Poritsky conjecture is actually not a counterexample. We also show that for a billiard in a table obtained by the string construction over any convex polygon, this polygon is a core of the billiard dynamics.

Is every triangle a trajectory of an elliptical billiard?

Abstract:Using Marden's Theorem from geometric theory of polynomials, we show that for every triangle there is a unique ellipse such that the triangle is a billiard trajectory within that ellipse. Since $3$-periodic trajectories of billiards within ellipses are examples of the Poncelet polygons, our considerations provide a new insight into the relationship between Marden's Theorem and the Poncelet Porism, two gems of exceptional classical beauty. We also show that every parallelogram is a billiard trajectory within a unique ellipse. We prove a similar result for the self-intersecting polygonal lines consisting of two pairs of congruent sides, named "Darboux butterflies". In each of three considered cases, we effectively calculate the foci of the boundary ellipses.

3D billiards: visualization of regular structures and trapping of chaotic trajectories

Abstract:The dynamics in three-dimensional billiards leads, using a Poincaré section, to a four-dimensional map which is challenging to visualize. By means of the recently introduced 3D phase-space slices an intuitive representation of the organization of the mixed phase space with regular and chaotic dynamics is obtained. Of particular interest for applications are constraints to classical transport between different regions of phase space which manifest in the statistics of Poincaré recurrence times. For a 3D paraboloid billiard we observe a slow power-law decay caused by long-trapped trajectories which we analyze in phase space and in frequency space. Consistent with previous results for 4D maps we find that: (i) Trapping takes place close to regular structures outside the Arnold web. (ii) Trapping is not due to a generalized island-around-island hierarchy. (iii) The dynamics of sticky orbits is governed by resonance channels which extend far into the chaotic sea. We find clear signatures of partial transport barriers. Moreover, we visualize the geometry of stochastic layers in resonance channels explored by sticky orbits.

Abstract:An inscribed knot is formed by polygonally connecting points lying on a knot $\gamma$ in parametric order, then closing the path by connecting the first and final points. The stick-knot number of a knot type K is the minimum number of line segments needed to polygonally form some knot with the same homotopy type. The stick-knot number of a trefoil is 6. Cole Hugelmeyer studied the manifold $M$ consisting of 6 points lying on a triangular prism and found that by intersecting a perturbation of $M'$, twisting the top of the prism, with $Q_\gamma$, the manifold of 6-tuples of points lying on $\gamma$, any analytic knot with nontrivial quadratic term of its Conway polynomial has an inscribed trefoil. We show that by using a perturbation of the double-cover of the orientation class $[M \cap Q_\gamma]$ and analysis of planar configurations, an analogous result holds for a class of smooth knots with odd quadratic term. We also show that in the analytic case, there are both inscribed left and right-handed trefoils.

Let [math] be a tame knot and consider an [math] beaded necklace [math] which is the union of [math] consecutive disjoint closed round balls (pearls) [math], [math]. An [math] pearl chain necklace [math] is the union of [math] and [math]. We will construct, via the action of a Kleinian group, a sequence of nested pearl chain necklaces [math] whose inverse limit is a wild knot of dynamically defined type [math]. In this paper, we will prove some topological properties of this kind of wild knots; in particular, we generalize the construction of cyclic branched coverings for this case, and we show that there exists a wild knot of dynamically defined type such that [math] is an [math]-fold cyclic branched covering of [math] along it, for [math].

Abstract:We consider the question of how many essential Seifert Klein bottles with common boundary slope a knot in S^3 can bound, up to ambient isotopy. We prove that any hyperbolic knot in S^3 bounds at most six Seifert Klein bottles with a given boundary slope. The Seifert Klein bottles in a minimal projection of hyperbolic pretzel knots of length 3 are shown to be unique and pi_1-injective, with surgery along their boundary slope producing irreducible toroidal manifolds. The cable knots which bound essential Seifert Klein bottles are classified; their Seifert Klein bottles are shown to be non-pi_1-injective, and unique in the case of torus knots. For satellite knots we show that, in general, there is no upper bound for the number of distinct Seifert Klein bottles a knot can bound.
Chaotic properties for billiards in circular polygons

Abstract:We study billiards in domains enclosed by circular polygons. These are closed $C^1$ strictly convex curves formed by finitely many circular arcs. We prove the existence of a set in phase space, corresponding to generic sliding trajectories close enough to the boundary of the domain, in which the return billiard dynamics is semiconjugate to a transitive subshift on infinitely many symbols that contains the full $N$-shift as a topological factor for any $N \in \mathbb{N}$, so it has infinite topological entropy. We prove the existence of uncountably many asymptotic generic sliding trajectories approaching the boundary with optimal uniform linear speed, give an explicit exponentially big (in $q$) lower bound on the number of $q$-periodic trajectories as $q \to \infty$, and present an unusual property of the length spectrum. Our proofs are entirely analytical.

Taut foliations, braid positivity, and unknot detection

Abstract:We study positive braid knots (the knots in the three-sphere realized as positive braid closures) through the lens of the L-space conjecture. This conjecture predicts that if $K$ is a non-trivial positive braid knot, then for all $r < 2g(K)-1$, the 3-manifold obtained via $r$-framed Dehn surgery along $K$ admits a taut foliation. Our main result provides some positive evidence towards this conjecture: we construct taut foliations in such manifolds whenever $r<g(K)+1$. As an application, we produce a novel braid positivity obstruction for cable knots by proving that the $(n,\pm 1)$-cable of a knot $K$ is braid positive if and only if $K$ is the unknot. We also present some curious examples demonstrating the limitations of our construction; these examples can also be viewed as providing some negative evidence towards the L-space conjecture. Finally, we apply our main result to produce taut foliations in some splicings of knot exteriors.

Unknotting number 21 knots are slice in K3

Abstract:We prove that all knots with unknotting number at most 21 are smoothly slice in the K3 surface. We also prove a more general statement for 4-manifolds that contain a plumbing tree of spheres. Our strategy is based on a flexible method to remove double points of immersed surfaces in 4-manifolds by tubing over neighbourhoods of embedded trees. As a byproduct, we recover a classical result of Norman and Suzuki that every knot is smoothly slice in $S^2 \times S^2$ and in $\mathbb{CP}^2 \# \overline{\mathbb{CP}^2}$.

Abstract:We explore the triangle outer billiards map in points at infinity in the hyperbolic plane, focusing on the rotation number. Building on Dogru and Tabachnikov's work, which established the conditions for triangles where the rotation number of the billiard map is $1/3$, we examine cases where the rotation number is $2/5$. We provide a sufficient condition for this rotation number and show its necessity for large isosceles triangles. The results are framed within the context of the Beltrami-Klein model. We concludes with a conjecture based on the findings.

A determinant formula of the Jones polynomial for a family of braids

Abstract:In 2012, Cohen, Dasbach, and Russell presented an algorithm to construct a weighted adjacency matrix for a given knot diagram. In the case of pretzel knots, it is shown that after evaluation, the determinant of the matrix recovers the Jones polynomial. Although the Jones polynomial is known to be #P-hard by Jaeger, Vertigan, and Welsh, this presents a class of knots for which the Jones polynomial can be computed in polynomial time by using the determinant. In this paper, we extend these results by recovering the Jones polynomial as the determinant of a weighted adjacency matrix for certain subfamilies of the braid group. Lastly, we compute the Kauffman polynomial of (2,q) torus knots in polynomial time using the balanced overlaid Tait graphs. This is the first known example of generalizing the methodology of Cohen to a class of quantum invariants which cannot be derived from the HOMFLYPT polynomial.
