Abstract:We prove Seymour's Second Neighborhood Conjecture when the missing graph is disjoint stars under some conditions. Weaker conditions are required when n=2 or 3. In some cases, we exhibit two vertices with the desired property.

Abstract:Seymour's Second Neighborhood Conjecture (SSNC) asserts that every oriented finite simple graph (without digons) has a vertex whose second out-neighborhood is at least as large as its first out-neighborhood. Such a vertex is said to have the second neighborhood property (SNP). In this paper, we prove SSNC for tournaments missing two stars. We also study SSNC for tournaments missing disjoint paths and, particularly, in the case of missing paths of length 2. In some cases, we exhibit at least two vertices with the SNP.

Abstract:Seymour's Second Neighborhood Conjecture asserts that every digraph (without digons) has a vertex whose first out-neighborhood is at most as large as its second out-neighborhood. It is proved for tournaments, tournaments missing a matching and tournaments missing a generalized star. We prove this conjecture for classes of digraphs whose missing graph is a comb, a complete graph minus 2 independent edges, or a complete graph minus the edges of a cycle of length 5.

Abstract:Seymour's second neighborhood conjecture states that every simple digraph (without digons) has a vertex whose first out-neighborhood is at most as large as its second out-neighborhood. Such a vertex is said to have the second neighborhood property (SNP). We define "good" digraphs and prove a statement that implies that every feed vertex of a tournament has the SNP. In the case of digraphs missing a matching, we exhibit a feed vertex with the SNP by refining a proof due to Fidler and Yuster and using good digraphs. Moreover, in some cases we exhibit two vertices with SNP.

Abstract:If in a directed graph, v is an out-neighbor of u and w is an out-neighbor of v but not of u , then w is said to be a second out-neighbor of u . A vertex in a directed graph is said to have a large second neighborhood if it has at least as many second out-neighbors as out-neighbors. The Second Neighborhood Conjecture, first stated by Seymour, asserts that there is a vertex having a large second neighborhood in every oriented graph (a directed graph without loops or digons). It is straightforward to see that the conjecture is true for any oriented graph whose underlying undirected graph is bipartite. We extend this to show that the conjecture holds for oriented graphs whose vertex set can be partitioned into an independent set and a 2-degenerate graph. Fisher proved the conjecture for tournaments and later Havet and Thomassé provided a different proof for the same using median orders of tournaments. Havet and Thomassé in fact showed the stronger statement that if a tournament contains no sink, then it contains at least two vertices with large second neighborhoods. Using their techniques, Fidler and Yuster showed that the conjecture remains true for tournaments from which either a matching or a star has been removed. We extend this result to show that the conjecture holds even for tournaments from which both a matching and a star have been removed. This implies that a tournament from which a matching has been removed contains either a sink or two vertices with large second neighborhoods.

Abstract:Seymour's Second Neighborhood Conjecture (SNC) asserts that every oriented graph has a vertex whose first out-neighborhood is at most as large as its second out-neighborhood. In this paper, we prove that if $G$ is a graph containing no induced $C_4$, $\overline{C_4}$, $S_3$, chair and $\overline{chair}$, then every oriented graph missing $G$ satisfies this conjecture. As a consequence, we deduce that the conjecture holds for every oriented graph missing a threshold graph, a generalized comb or a star.

Abstract:A longstanding conjecture of Seymour states that in every oriented graph there is a vertex whose second outneighbourhood is at least as large as its outneighbourhood. In this short note we show that, for any fixed $p\in[0,1/2)$, a.a.s. every orientation of $G(n,p)$ satisfies Seymour's conjecture (as well as a related conjecture of Sullivan). This improves on a recent result of Botler, Moura and Naia. Moreover, we show that $p=1/2$ is a natural barrier for this problem, in the following sense: for any fixed $p\in(1/2,1)$, Seymour's conjecture is actually equivalent to saying that, with probability bounded away from $0$, every orientation of $G(n,p)$ satisfies Seymour's conjecture. This provides a first reduction of the problem. For a second reduction, we consider minimum degrees and show that, if Seymour's conjecture is false, then there must exist arbitrarily large strongly-connected counterexamples with bounded minimum outdegree. Contrasting this, we show that vertex-minimal counterexamples must have large minimum outdegree.

Abstract:Let T(X boolean OR Y, A) be a bipartite tournament with partite sets X,Y and arc set A. For any vertex x is an element of X boolean OR Y, the second out-neighbourhood N++(x) of x is the set of all vertices with distance 2 from x. In this paper, we prove that T contains at least two vertices x such that |N++(x)| >= N+(x)| unless T is in a special class B-1 of bipartite tournaments; show that T contains at least a vertex x such that |N++(x)| >= N-(x)| and characterize the class B-2 of bipartite tournaments in which there exists exactly one vertex x with this property; and prove that if |X| = |Y| or |X| >= 4|Y|, then the bipartite tournament T contains a vertex x such that |N++(x)| + |N+(x)| >= 2|N-(x)|.
On Seymour's and Sullivan's Second Neighbourhood Conjectures

Abstract:For a vertex $x$ of a digraph, $d^+(x)$ ($d^-(x)$, resp.) is the number of vertices at distance 1 from (to, resp.) $x$ and $d^{++}(x)$ is the number of vertices at distance 2 from $x$. In 1995, Seymour conjectured that for any oriented graph $D$ there exists a vertex $x$ such that $d^+(x)\leq d^{++}(x)$. In 2006, Sullivan conjectured that there exists a vertex $x$ in $D$ such that $d^-(x)\leq d^{++}(x)$. We give a sufficient condition in terms of the number of transitive triangles for an oriented graph to satisfy Sullivan's conjecture. In particular, this implies that Sullivan's conjecture holds for all orientations of planar graphs and of triangle-free graphs. An oriented graph $D$ is an oriented split graph if the vertices of $D$ can be partitioned into vertex sets $X$ and $Y$ such that $X$ is an independent set and $Y$ induces a tournament. We also show that the two conjectures hold for some families of oriented split graphs, in particular, when $Y$ induces a regular or an almost regular tournament.

Abstract:Seymour Second Neighborhood Conjecture (SSNC) asserts that every finite oriented graph has a vertex whose second out-neighborhood is at least as large as its first out-neighborhood. Such a vertex is called a Seymour vertex. A digraph $D = (V, E)$ is $k$-anti-transitive if for every pair of vertices $u, v \in V$, the existence of a directed path of length $k$ from $u$ to $v$ implies that $(u, v) \notin E$. An $m$-free digraph is digraph having no directed cycles with length at most $m$. In this paper, we prove that if $D$ is $k$-anti-transitive and $(k-4)$-free digraph, then $D$ has a Seymour vertex. As a consequence, a special case of Caccetta-Haggkvist Conjecture holds on 7-anti-transitive oriented graphs. This work extends recently known results.

Acyclic subgraphs of tournaments with high chromatic number

Abstract:We prove that every $n$-vertex tournament $G$ has an acyclic subgraph with chromatic number at least $n^{5/9-o(1)}$, while there exists an $n$-vertex tournament $G$ whose every acyclic subgraph has chromatic number at most $n^{3/4+o(1)}$. This establishes in a strong form a conjecture of Nassar and Yuster and improves on another result of theirs. Our proof combines probabilistic and spectral techniques together with some additional ideas. In particular, we prove a lemma showing that every tournament with many transitive subtournaments has a large subtournament that is almost transitive. This may be of independent interest.

Abstract:An $(n,k,t)$-graph is a graph on $n$ vertices in which every set of $k$ vertices contain a clique on $t$ vertices. Turán's Theorem (complemented) states that the unique minimum $(n,k,2)$-graph is a disjoint union of cliques. We prove that minimum $(n,k,t)$-graphs are always disjoint unions of cliques for any $t$ (despite nonuniqueness of extremal examples), thereby generalizing Turán's Theorem and confirming two conjectures of Hoffman et al.

Combinatorial and Asymptotical Results on the Neighborhood Grid

Abstract:In various application fields, such as fluid-, cell-, or crowd-simulations, spatial data structures are very important. They answer nearest neighbor queries which are instrumental in performing necessary computations for, e.g., taking the next time step in the simulation. Correspondingly, various such data structures have been developed, one being the \emph{neighborhood grid}. In this paper, we consider combinatorial aspects of this data structure. Particularly, we show that an assumption on uniqueness, made in previous works, is not actually satisfied. We extend the notions of the neighborhood grid to arbitrary grid sizes and dimensions and provide two alternative, correct versions of the proof that was broken by the dissatisfied assumption. Furthermore, we explore both the uniqueness of certain states of the data structure as well as when the number of these states is maximized. We provide a partial classification by using the hook-length formula for rectangular Young tableaux. Finally, we conjecture how to extend this to all 2-dimensional cases.

Abstract:A pure pair in a tournament G is an ordered pair ( A , B ) of disjoint subsets of V ( G ) such that every vertex in B is adjacent from every vertex in A . Which tournaments H have the property that if G is a tournament not containing H as a subtournament, and | G | > 1 , there is a pure pair ( A , B ) in G with | A | , | B | ≥ c | G | , where c > 0 is a constant independent of G ? Let us say that such a tournament H has the strong EH-property. As far as we know, it might be that a tournament H has this property if and only if its vertex set has a linear ordering in which its backedges form a forest. Certainly this condition is necessary, but we are far from proving sufficiency. We make a small step in this direction, showing that if a tournament can be ordered with at most three backedges then it has the strong EH-property (except for one case, that we could not decide). In particular, every tournament with at most six vertices has the property, except for three that we could not decide. We also give a seven-vertex tournament that does not have the strong EH-property. This is related to the Erdős-Hajnal conjecture, which in one form says that for every tournament H there exists τ > 0 such that every tournament G not containing H as a subtournament has a transitive subtournament of cardinality at least | G | τ . Let us say that a tournament H satisfying this has the EH-property. It is known that every tournament with the strong EH-property also has the EH-property; so our result extends work by Berger, Choromanski and Chudnovsky, who proved that every tournament with at most six vertices has the EH-property, except for one that they did not decide.

Abstract:The Second Neighborhood Conjecture states that every simple digraph has a vertex whose second out-neighborhood is at least as large as its first out-neighborhood, i.e. a vertex with the Second Neighborhood Property. A cycle intersection graph of an even graph is a new graph whose vertices are the cycles in a cycle decomposition of the original graph and whose edges represent vertex intersections of the cycles. By using a digraph variant of this concept, we prove that Eulerian digraphs which admit a simple cycle intersection graph have not only adhere to the Second Neighborhood Conjecture, but that local simplicity can, in some cases, also imply the existence of a Seymour vertex in the original digraph.

Bounding the chromatic number of dense digraphs by arc neighborhoods

Abstract:The chromatic number of a directed graph is the minimum number of induced acyclic subdigraphs that cover its vertex set, and accordingly, the chromatic number of a tournament is the minimum number of transitive subtournaments that cover its vertex set. The neighborhood of an arc $uv$ in a tournament $T$ is the set of vertices that form a directed triangle with arc $uv$. We show that if the neighborhood of every arc in a tournament has bounded chromatic number, then the whole tournament has bounded chromatic number. This holds more generally for oriented graphs with bounded independence number, and we extend our proof from tournaments to this class of dense digraphs. As an application, we prove the equivalence of a conjecture of El-Zahar and Erdős and a recent conjecture of Nguyen, Scott and Seymour relating the structure of graphs and tournaments with high chromatic number.

Hypergraph Turán problems in $\ell_2$-norm, the Kleitman-West problem and Erdős-Ko-Rado

Abstract:For a $k$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$, the \emph{codegree squared sum} $\text{co}_2(\mathcal{H})$ is the square of the $\ell_2$-norm of the codegree vector of $\mathcal{H}$, and for a family $\mathscr{F}$ of $k$-uniform hypergraphs, the codegree squared extremal number $\text{exco}_2(n, \mathscr{F})$ is the maximum codegree squared sum of a hypergraph on $n$ vertices which does not contain any hypergraph in $\mathscr{F}$. Balogh, Clemen and Lidický recently introduced the codegree squared extremal number and determined it for a number of $3$-uniform hypergraphs, including the complete graphs $K_4^3$ and $K_5^3$. In this paper, we show that Turán problems in the $\ell_2$-norm are closely connected with a forbidden subgraph version of the Kleitman-West problem, the edge isoperimetric problem in the Johnson graph. We prove a version of the classical Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for the codegree squared extremal number: if $\mathcal{F} \subset \binom{[n]}{k}$ is intersecting and $n\ge 2k$, then \[\text{co}_2(\mathcal{F}) \le \binom{n-1}{k-1}(1+(n-k+1)(k-1)),\] with equality only for the star for $n > 2k$. Our main tool is an inequality of Bey, which also gives a general upper bound on $\text{exco}_2(n, \mathscr{F})$. We also prove versions of the Erdős Matching Conjecture and the $t$-intersecting Erdős-Ko-Rado theorem for the codegree squared extremal number for large $n$, determine the exact codegree squared extremal number of minimal and linear $3$-paths and $3$-cycles, and determine asymptotically the codegree squared extremal number of minimal and linear $s$-paths and $s$-cycles for $s\ge 4$.

Two conjectured strengthenings of Turán's theorem

Abstract:We investigate two conjectured spectral graph theoretic strengthenings of Turán's theorem. Let $\mu_1 \ge \ldots \ge \mu_n$ denote the eigenvalues of a graph $G$ with $n$ vertices, $m$ edges and clique number $\omega(G)$. The concise version of Turán's theorem is that $n/(n - d)$ is a lower bound for the clique number $\omega(G)$, where $d$ is the average degree. Our first conjecture is that $d$ can be replaced in this bound with $\sqrt{s^+}$, where $s^+$ is the sum of the squares of the positive eigenvalues. We prove this conjecture for triangle-free, weakly perfect and Kneser graphs and for almost all graphs. We have also used various software tools to search for a counter-example. Nikiforov proved a spectral version of Turán's theorem that \[ \mu_1^2 \le \frac{2m(\omega(G) - 1)}{\omega(G)}, \] and Bollobás and Nikiforov conjectured that for $G \not = K_n$ \[ \mu_1^2 + \mu_2^2 \le \frac{2m(\omega(G) - 1)}{\omega(G)}. \] For our second conjecture, we propose that for all graphs $(\mu_1^2 + \mu_2^2)$ in this inequality can be replaced by the sum of the squares of the $\omega(G)$ largest eigenvalues, provided they are positive. We prove the conjecture for weakly perfect, Kneser, and classes of strongly regular graphs. We also provide experimental evidence and describe how the bound can be applied. Liu and Ning published a wide-ranging paper entitled ``Unsolved Problems in spectral graph theory'', and these two conjectures were placed second and fourth in their list of such problems.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a graph of order $n$ and $\mu$ be an adjacency eigenvalue of $G$ with multiplicity $k\geq 1$. A star complement $H$ for $\mu$ in $G$ is an induced subgraph of $G$ of order $n-k$ with no eigenvalue $\mu$, and the vertex subset $X=V(G-H)$ is called a star set for $\mu$ in $G$. The study of star complements and star sets provides a strong link between graph structure and linear algebra. In this paper, we study the regular graphs with $K_{t,s}\ (s\geq t\geq 2)$ as a star complement for an eigenvalue $\mu$, especially, characterize the case of $t=3$ completely, obtain some properties when $t=s$, and propose some problems for further study.
Asymmetry of 2-step Transit Probabilities in 2-Coloured Regular Graphs

Abstract:Suppose that the vertices of a regular graph are coloured red and blue with an equal number of each (we call this a balanced colouring). Since the graph is undirected, the number of edges from a red vertex to a blue vertex is clearly the same as the number of edges from a blue vertex to a red vertex. However, if instead of edges we count walks of length $2$, then this symmetry disappears. Our aim in this paper is to investigate how extreme this asymmetry can be. Our main question is: Given a $d$-regular graph, for which pairs $(x,y)\in[0,1]^2$ is there a balanced colouring for which the probability that a random walk starting from a red vertex stays within the red class for at least $2$ steps is $x$, and the corresponding probability for blue is $y$? Our most general result is that for any $d$-regular graph, these pairs lie within the convex hull of the $2d$ points $\left\{\left(\frac{l}{d},\frac{l^2}{d^2}\right),\left(\frac{l^2}{d^2},\frac{l}{d}\right) :0\leq l\leq d\right\}$. Our main focus is the torus for which we prove both sharper bounds and existence results via constructions. In particular, for the $2$-dimensional torus, we show that asymptotically, the region in which these pairs of probabilities can lie is exactly the convex hull of: \[ \left\{\left(0,0\right),\left(\frac{1}{2},\frac{1}{4}\right),\left(\frac{3}{4},\frac{9}{16}\right),\left(\frac{1}{4},\frac{1}{2}\right),\left(\frac{9}{16},\frac{3}{4}\right),\left(1,1\right)\right\} \]

On certain star versions of the Scheepers property

Abstract:The star versions of the Scheepers property, namely star-Scheepers, strongly star-Scheepers and new star-Scheepers property have been introduced. We explore further ramifications concerning critical cardinalities. Quite a few interesting observations are obtained while dealing with the Isbell-Mrówka spaces, Niemytzki plane and Alexandroff duplicates. The properties like monotonically normal, locally countable cellularity (which is introduced here) play an important role in our investigation. We study games corresponding to the classical and star variants of the Scheepers property which have not been investigated in prior works. Some open problems are also posed.
