Abstract:We develop a powerful tool for embedding any tree poset $P$ of height $k$ in the Boolean lattice which allows us to solve several open problems in the area. We show that: * If $\mathcal{F}$ is a family in $\mathcal{B}_n$ with $|\mathcal{F}|\ge (q-1+\varepsilon){n\choose \lfloor n/2\rfloor}$ for some $q\ge k$, then $\mathcal{F}$ contains on the order of as many induced copies of $P$ as is contained in the $q$ middle layers of the Boolean lattice. This generalizes results of Bukh and Boehnlein and Jiang which guaranteed a single such copy in non-induced and induced settings respectively. * The number of induced $P$-free families of $\mathcal{B}_n$ is $2^{(k-1+o(1)){n\choose \lfloor n/2\rfloor}}$, strengthening recent independent work of Balogh, Garcia, Wigal who obtained the same bounds in the non-induced setting. * The largest induced $P$-free subset of a $p$-random subset of $\mathcal{B}_n$ for $p\gg n^{-1}$ has size at most $(k-1+o(1))p{n\choose \lfloor n/2\rfloor}$, generalizing previous work of Balogh, Mycroft, and Treglown and of Collares and Morris for the case when $P$ is a chain. All three results are asymptotically tight and give affirmative answers to general conjectures of Gerbner, Nagy, Patkós, and Vizer in the case of tree posets.

Abstract:We introduce an infinitesimal Hopf algebra of planar trees, generalising the construction of the non-commutative Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra. A non-degenerate pairing and a dual basis are defined, and a combinatorial interpretation of the pairing in terms of orders on the vertices of planar forests is given. Moreover, the coproduct and the pairing can also be described with the help of a partial order on the set of planar forests, making it isomorphic to the Tamari poset. As a corollary, the dual basis can be computed with a Möbius inversion.

Abstract:We develop a simple method of constructing topological spaces from countable posets with finite levels, one which applies to all second countable T_1 compacta. This results in a duality amenable to building such spaces from finite building blocks, essentially an abstract analog of classical constructions defining compacta from progressively finer open covers.

Abstract:Given a symmetric monoidal category $C$ with product $\sqcup$, where the neutral element for the product is an initial object, we consider the poset of $\sqcup$-complemented subobjects of a given object $X$. When this poset has finite height, we define decompositions and partial decompositions of $X$ which are coherent with $\sqcup$, and order them by refinement. From these posets, we define complexes of frames and partial bases, augmented Bergman complexes and related ordered versions. We propose a unified approach to the study of their combinatorics and homotopy type, establishing various properties and relations between them. Via explicit homotopy formulas, we will be able to transfer structural properties, such as Cohen-Macaulayness.

Polyhedral products over finite posets

Abstract:Polyhedral products were defined by Bahri, Bendersky, Cohen and Gitler, to be spaces obtained as unions of certain product spaces indexed by the simplices of an abstract simplicial complex. In this paper we give a very general homotopy theoretic construction of polyhedral products over arbitrary pointed posets. We show that under certain restrictions on the poset $\calp$, that include all known cases, the cohomology of the resulting spaces can be computed as an inverse limit over $\calp$ of the cohomology of the building blocks. This motivates the definition of an analogous algebraic construction - the polyhedral tensor product. We show that for a large family of posets, the cohomology of the polyhedral product is given by the polyhedral tensor product. We then restrict attention to polyhedral posets, a family of posets that include face posets of simplicial complexes, and simplicial posets, as well as many others. We define the Stanley-Reisner ring of a polyhedral poset and show that, like in the classical cases, these rings occur as the cohomology of certain polyhedral products over the poset in question. For any pointed poset $\calp$ we construct a simplicial poset $s(\calp)$, and show that if $\calp$ is a polyhedral poset then polyhedral products over $\calp$ coincide up to homotopy with the corresponding polyhedral products over $s(\calp)$.

Abstract:We study a partially ordered set of planar labeled rooted trees by use of combinatorial objects called Dyck tilings. A generating function of the poset is factorized when the minimum element of the poset is $312$-avoiding and satisfies some extra condition. We define a cover relation on rational Dyck tilings by that of labeled trees, and show that increasing and decreasing labelings are dual to each other. We consider two decompositions of a rational $(a,b)$-Dyck tiling: one is into $ab$ Dyck tilings and the other is into $a$ $(1,b)$-Dyck tilings. In the first case, we show that the weight of the $(a,b)$-Dyck tiling is the sum of the weights of $ab$ Dyck tilings. In the second case, we introduce a cover relation on $(1,b)$-Dyck tilings and obtain a poset of $(a,b)$-Dyck tilings by this decomposition.

Abstract:The interval poset of a permutation is the set of intervals of a permutation, ordered with respect to inclusion. It has been introduced and studied recently in [B. Tenner, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2007.06142" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2007.06142">arXiv:2007.06142</a>]. We study this poset from the perspective of the decomposition trees of permutations, describing a procedure to obtain the former from the latter. We then give alternative proofs of some of the results in [B. Tenner, <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2007.06142" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2007.06142">arXiv:2007.06142</a>], and we solve the open problems that it posed (and some other enumerative problems) using techniques from symbolic and analytic combinatorics. Finally, we compute the Möbius function on such posets.

Abstract:Furstenberg-Weiss have extended Szemerédi's theorem on arithmetic progressions to trees by showing that a large subset of the tree contains arbitrarily long arithmetic subtrees. We study higher dimensional versions that analogously extend the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem by demonstrating the existence of certain arithmetic structures in large subsets of a cartesian product of trees.

Abstract:This paper is a brief mathematical excursion which starts from quantum electrodynamics and leads to the Moebius function of the Tamari lattice of planar binary trees, within the framework of groups of tree-expanded series. First we recall Brouder's expansion of the photon and the electron Green's functions on planar binary trees, before and after the renormalization. Then we recall the structure of Connes and Kreimer's Hopf algebra of renormalization in the context of planar binary trees, and of their dual group of tree-expanded series. Finally we show that the Moebius function of the Tamari posets of planar binary trees gives rise to a particular series in this group.

Abstract:We give a new construction of a Hopf algebra defined first by Reading whose bases are indexed by objects belonging to the Baxter combinatorial family (i.e., Baxter permutations, pairs of twin binary trees, etc.). Our construction relies on the definition of the Baxter monoid, analog of the plactic monoid and the sylvester monoid, and on a Robinson-Schensted-like correspondence and insertion algorithm. Indeed, the Baxter monoid leads to the definition of a lattice structure over pairs of twin binary trees and the definition of a Hopf algebra. The algebraic properties of this Hopf algebra are studied and among other, multiplicative bases are provided, and freeness and self-duality proved.

Abstract:We now have a wide range of proof assistants available for compositional reasoning in monoidal or higher categories which are free on some generating signature. However, none of these allow us to represent categorical operations such as products, equalizers, and similar logical techniques. Here we show how the foundational mathematical formalism of one such proof assistant can be generalized, replacing the conventional notion of string diagram as a geometrical entity living inside an n-cube with a posetal variant that allows exotic branching structure. We show that these generalized diagrams have richer behaviour with respect to categorical limits, and give an algorithm for computing limits in this setting, with a view towards future application in proof assistants.

Abstract:Motivated by various developments in algebraic combinatorics and its applications, we investigate here the fine structure of a fundamental but little known theorem, the Gerstenhaber and Schack cohomology comparison theorem.The theorem classically asserts that there is a cochain equivalence between the usual singular cochain complex of a simplicial complex and the relative Hochschild complex of its incidence algebra, and a quasi-isomorphism with the standard Hochschild complex. Here, we will be mostly interested in its application to arbitrary posets (or, equivalently, finite topologies) and their incidence algebras. We construct various structures, classical and new, on the above two complexes: cosimplicial, differential graded algebra, operadic and brace algebra structures and show that the comparison theorem preserves all of them. These results provide non standard insights on links between the theory of posets, incidence algebras, endomorphism operads and finite and combinatorial topology. By non standard, we refer here to the use of relative versions of Hochschild complexes and operads.

Abstract:We introduce the notions of preordered and heap-preordered forests, generalizing the construction of ordered and heap-ordered forests. We prove that the algebras of preordered and heap-preordered forests are Hopf for the cut coproduct, and we construct a Hopf morphism to the Hopf algebra of packed words. Moreover, we define another coproduct on the preordered forests given by the contraction of edges. Finally, we give a combinatorial description of morphims defined on Hopf algebras of forests with values in the Hopf algebras of shuffes or quasi-shuffles.

Abstract:We call a poset factorable if its characteristic polynomial has all positive integer roots. Inspired by inductive and divisional freeness of a central hyperplane arrangement, we introduce and study the notion of inductive posets and their superclass of divisional posets. It then motivates us to define the so-called inductive and divisional abelian (Lie group) arrangements, whose posets of layers serve as the main examples of our posets. Our first main result is that every divisional poset is factorable. Our second main result shows that the class of inductive posets contains strictly supersolvable posets, the notion recently introduced due to Bibby and Delucchi (2022). This result can be regarded as an extension of a classical result due to Jambu and Terao (1984), which asserts that every supersolvable hyperplane arrangement is inductively free. Our third main result is an application to toric arrangements, which states that the toric arrangement defined by an arbitrary ideal of a root system of type $A$, $B$ or $C$ with respect to the root lattice is inductive.

Homology of Segre powers of Boolean and subspace lattices

Abstract:Segre products of posets were defined by Björner and Welker [J. Pure Appl. Algebra, 198(1-3), 43--55 (2005)]. We investigate the $t$-fold Segre powers of the Boolean lattice $B_n$ and the subspace lattice $B_n(q)$. The case $t=2$ was considered by Yifei Li in [Alg. Comb. 6 (2), 457--469, 2023]. We describe how to construct an EL-labeling for the $t$-fold Segre power $P^{(t)}=P\circ \cdots \circ P$ ($t$ factors) from an EL-labeling of a pure poset $P$. We develop an extension of the product Frobenius characteristic defined by Li to examine the action of the $t$-fold direct product of the symmetric group on the homology of rank-selected subposets of $B_n^{(t)}$, giving an explicit formula for the decomposition into irreducibles for the homology of the full poset. We show that the stable principal specialisation of the associated Frobenius characteristics coincides with the corresponding rank-selected invariants for the $t$-fold Segre power of the subspace lattice.

On the number of $P$-free set systems for tree posets $P$

Abstract:We say a finite poset $P$ is a tree poset if its Hasse diagram is a tree. Let $k$ be the length of the largest chain contained in $P$. We show that when $P$ is a fixed tree poset, the number of $P$-free set systems in $2^{[n]}$ is $2^{(1+o(1))(k-1){n \choose \lfloor n/2\rfloor}}$. The proof uses a generalization of a theorem by Boris Bukh together with a variation of the multiphase graph container algorithm.

Abstract:Csikvári constructed a poset on trees to prove that several graph functions attain extreme values at the star and the path among the trees on a fixed number of vertices. Reiner and Smith proved that the Tutte polynomials $T(1,y)$ of cones over trees, which are the graphs obtained by attaching a cone vertex to a tree, have the described extreme behavior. They further conjectured that the result can be strengthened in terms of Csikvári's poset. We solve this conjecture affirmatively.

Abstract:Under certain conditions, Koszul complexes can be used to calculate relative Betti diagrams of vector space-valued functors indexed by a poset, without the explicit computation of global minimal relative resolutions. In relative homological algebra of such functors, free functors are replaced by an arbitrary family of functors. Relative Betti diagrams encode the multiplicities of these functors in minimal relative resolutions. In this article we provide conditions under which grading the chosen family of functors leads to explicit Koszul complexes whose homology dimensions are the relative Betti diagrams, thus giving a scheme for the computation of these numerical descriptors.
