Abstract:We propose 2d $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ dualities between SU(N) gauge theories with fundamental and antisymmetric chiral matter and Landau-Ginzburg theories with chiral and Fermi multiplets. Many of these dualities can be derived by topologically twisting 4d s-confining gauge theories on a two-sphere, with integer non-negative $R$ charges. We provide various checks of the dualities, showing that they descend from more "basic" dualities, similarly to analogous derivations in higher dimensions. The proof are based on the fact that the antisymmetric tensors can be traded with USp(2n) gauge theories with fundamental chirals, mimicking the higher dimensional mechanism known as tensor deconfinement. The quivers obtained in this way can be shown to be dual to LG models after applying other elementary "basic" dualities.

The meson spectrum so that the duality works is encoded elegantly in the factorization of the polynomial $y^n-1=\Phi_{+}\Phi_{-}$. Our consideration covers many known $\mathcal{N}=1$ dualities and generates a large class of new examples.

Abstract:The presence of magnetic monopole like excitations of nonabelian varieties is one of the subtlest consequences of spontaneously broken gauge symmetries. Important hints about their quantum mechanical properties, which remained long mysterious, are coming from a detailed knowledge of the dynamics of supersymmetric gauge theories which has become available recently. These developments might shed light on the problem of confinement and dynamical symmetry breaking in QCD. We discuss here some beautiful features of vortex-monopole systems, in which dual nonabelian transformations among monopoles are generated by the nonabelian vortex moduli.

Berry Connections for 2d $(2,2)$ Theories, Monopole Spectral Data & (Generalised) Cohomology Theories

Abstract:We study Berry connections for supersymmetric ground states of 2d $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ GLSMs quantised on a circle, which are generalised periodic monopoles. Periodic monopole solutions may be encoded into difference modules, as shown by Mochizuki, or into an alternative algebraic construction given in terms of vector bundles endowed with filtrations. By studying the ground states in terms of a one-parameter family of supercharges, we relate these two different kinds of spectral data to the physics of the GLSMs. From the difference modules we derive novel difference equations for brane amplitudes, which in the conformal limit yield novel difference equations for hemisphere or vortex partition functions. When the GLSM flows to a nonlinear sigma model with Kähler target $X$, we show that the two kinds of spectral data are related to different (generalised) cohomology theories: the difference modules are related to the equivariant quantum cohomology of $X$, whereas the vector bundles with filtrations are related to its equivariant K-theory.

Abstract:We consider N = 2 superconformal field theory with following properties: a) Coulomb branch operators have fractional scaling dimensions, b) there are exact marginal deformations . The weakly coupled gauge theory descriptions are found by decomposing 3d mirror into different components, and different decompositions correspond to different duality frames. The gauge theory is formed by gauging Argyres-Douglas matter, and we write down all duality frames for several classes with infinite sequence of theories.

Non-Invertible Anyon Condensation and Level-Rank Dualities

Abstract:We derive new dualities of topological quantum field theories in three spacetime dimensions that generalize the familiar level-rank dualities of Chern-Simons gauge theories. The key ingredient in these dualities is non-abelian anyon condensation, which is a gauging operation for topological lines with non-group-like i.e. non-invertible fusion rules. We find that, generically, dualities involve such non-invertible anyon condensation and that this unifies a variety of exceptional phenomena in topological field theories and their associated boundary rational conformal field theories, including conformal embeddings, and Maverick cosets (those where standard algorithms for constructing a coset model fail.) We illustrate our discussion in a variety of isolated examples as well as new infinite series of dualities involving non-abelian anyon condensation including: i) a new description of the parafermion theory as $(SU(N)_{2} \times Spin(N)_{-4})/\mathcal{A}_{N},$ ii) a new presentation of a series of points on the orbifold branch of $c=1$ conformal field theories as $(Spin(2N)_{2} \times Spin(N)_{-2} \times Spin(N)_{-2})/\mathcal{B}_{N}$, and iii) a new dual form of $SU(2)_{N}$ as $(USp(2N)_{1} \times SO(N)_{-4})/\mathcal{C}_{N}$ arising from conformal embeddings, where $\mathcal{A}_{N}, \mathcal{B}_{N},$ and $\mathcal{C}_{N}$ are appropriate collections of gauged non-invertible bosons.

A Duality Web in 2+1 Dimensions and Condensed Matter Physics

Abstract:Building on earlier work in the high energy and condensed matter communities, we present a web of dualities in $2+1$ dimensions that generalize the known particle/vortex duality. Some of the dualities relate theories of fermions to theories of bosons. Others relate different theories of fermions. For example, the long distance behavior of the $2+1$-dimensional analog of QED with a single Dirac fermion (a theory known as $U(1)_{1/2}$) is identified with the $O(2)$ Wilson-Fisher fixed point. The gauged version of that fixed point with a Chern-Simons coupling at level one is identified as a free Dirac fermion. The latter theory also has a dual version as a fermion interacting with some gauge fields. Assuming some of these dualities, other dualities can be derived. Our analysis resolves a number of confusing issues in the literature including how time reversal is realized in these theories. It also has many applications in condensed matter physics like the theory of topological insulators (and their gapped boundary states) and the problem of electrons in the lowest Landau level at half filling. (Our techniques also clarify some points in the fractional Hall effect and its description using flux attachment.) In addition to presenting several consistency checks, we also present plausible (but not rigorous) derivations of the dualities and relate them to $3+1$-dimensional $S$-duality.

Abstract:We study the ${\mathcal{N}=2}$ four-dimensional superconformal index in various interesting limits, such that only states annihilated by more than one supercharge contribute. Extrapolating from the SU(2) generalized quivers, which have a Lagrangian description, we conjecture explicit formulae for all A-type quivers of class ${\mathcal S}$, which in general do not have one. We test our proposals against several expected dualities. The index can always be interpreted as a correlator in a two-dimensional topological theory, which we identify in each limit as a certain deformation of two-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. The structure constants of the topological algebra are diagonal in the basis of Macdonald polynomials of the holonomies.
On Spectral Data for $(2,2)$ Berry Connections, Difference Equations & Equivariant Quantum Cohomology

Abstract:We study supersymmetric Berry connections of 2d $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ gauged linear sigma models (GLSMs) quantized on a circle, which are periodic monopoles, with the aim to provide a fruitful physical arena for recent mathematical constructions related to the latter. These are difference modules encoding monopole solutions via a Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence established by Mochizuki. We demonstrate how the difference modules arise naturally by studying the ground states as the cohomology of a one-parameter family of supercharges. In particular, we show how they are related to one kind of monopole spectral data, a quantization of the Cherkis-Kapustin spectral curve, and relate them to the physics of the GLSM. By considering states generated by D-branes and leveraging the difference modules, we derive novel difference equations for brane amplitudes. We then show that in the conformal limit, these degenerate into novel difference equations for hemisphere partition functions, which are exactly calculable. When the GLSM flows to a nonlinear sigma model with Kähler target $X$, we show that the difference modules are related to the equivariant quantum cohomology of $X$.

Abstract:We show that specializations of the 4d $ \mathcal{N}=2 $ superconformal index labeled by an integer N is given by Tr ℳN where ℳ is the Kontsevich-Soibelman monodromy operator for BPS states on the Coulomb branch. We provide evidence that the states enumerated by these limits of the index lead to a family of 2d chiral algebras $ {\mathcal{A}}_N $. This generalizes the recent results for the N = −1 case which corresponds to the Schur limit of the superconformal index. We show that this specialization of the index leads to the same integrand as that of the elliptic genus of compactification of the superconformal theory on S2 × T2 where we turn on $ \frac{1}{2}N $ units of U(1)r flux on S2.
Duality between $U\times U$ and $O\times USp$ theories from $A_{3}=D_{3}$

Abstract:We study the duality between the ABJ(M) theory at Chern-Simons level $k=4$ and the orientifold ABJ theory at Chern-Simons level $k=1$ by using the $S^{3}$ partition function. The partition function can be computed using the supersymmetric localization in terms of a matrix model, and we derive an ideal Fermi gas system by applying the Fermi gas formalism to the matrix model. By using this formalism, we show that the matrix model can be embedded in the partition function of $\hat{A}_{3}$ or $\hat{D}_{3}$ quiver theories, and the equality of these quiver theories, which comes from $\hat{A}_{3}=\hat{D}_{3}$, leads to exact relations of the matrix models. These exact relations can be used to check the identification of the flavor symmetries. The perfect agreement between the matrix models also implies that no decoupled sector is needed.

Abstract:We propose confining dualities of $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ half-BPS boundary conditions in 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetric $SU(N)$, $USp(2n)$ and $SO(N)$ gauge theories. Some of these dualities have the novel feature that one (anti)fundamental chiral has Dirichlet boundary condition while the rest have Neumann boundary conditions. While some of the dualities can be extended to 3d bulk dualities, others should be understood intrinsically as 2d dualities as they seem to hold only at the boundary. The gauge theory Neumann half-indices are well-defined even for theories which contain monopole operators with non-positive scaling dimensions and they are given by Askey-Wilson type $q$-beta integrals. As a consequence of the confining dualities, new conjectural identities of such integrals are found.

Abstract:Recently, a large class of 3d $\mathcal{N} = 2$ gauge theories with mixed Chern-Simons levels, corresponding to plumbing 3-manifolds, has been identified. In this paper we generalize these theories by including in their content chiral multiples, and analyze their properties. We find that the content of such theories can be encoded in graphs, which generalize plumbing graphs, and various operations in these theories can be represented in terms of transformations of such graphs. The operations in question include gauging global symmetries, integrating out gauge nodes, which for theories without chiral multiplets corresponds to Kirby moves, and ST-transformations that involve chiral multiplets. The dualities such as mirror triality and SQED-XYZ duality can be also represented in terms of graphs, and enable us to find many new dual theories by gauging global symmetries. In particular, we find that gauged SQED-XYZ duality leads to other dualities, which take the same form as operations of linking and unlinking discussed in the context of knots-quivers correspondence. We also find that the superpotential can be encoded in an interesting class of triangle graphs that satisfy certain consistency conditions, we discuss decoupling and Higgsing of chiral multiplets, as well as interpretation of various phenomena in terms of brane webs.

Abstract:We initiate the study of how the insertion of magnetically charged states in 4d self-dual gauge theories impacts the 2d chiral algebras supported on the celestial sphere at asymptotic null infinity, from the point of view of the 4d/2d twistorial correspondence introduced by Costello and the second author. By reducing the 6d twistorial theory to a 3d holomorphic-topological theory with suitable boundary conditions, we can motivate certain non-perturbative enhancements of the celestial chiral algebra corresponding to extensions by modules arising from 3d boundary monopole operators. We also identify the insertion of 4d (non-abelian) monopoles with families of spectral flow automorphisms of the celestial chiral algebra.

Duality and entanglement in lattice gauge theories

Abstract:The study of entanglement in quantum field theories provides insight into universal properties which are typically challenging to extract by means of local observables. However, calculations of quantities related to entanglement in gauge theories are limited by ambiguities that stem from the non-factorizability of the Hilbert space. On the other hand, (2+1)-dimensional lattice gauge theories are known to admit a dual description in terms of spin models, for which the replica trick and Rényi entropies are well defined. In this contribution, we exploit Kramers-Wannier duality to perform a numerical study of the entropic c-function of the (2+1)-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory in the continuum limit. Our results are compared with analytical predictions from holographic models.

Fermionic dualities with axial gauge fields

Abstract:The dualities that map hard-to-solve, interacting theories to free, non-interacting ones often trigger a deeper understanding of the systems to which they apply. However, simplifying assumptions such as Lorentz invariance, low dimensionality, or the absence of axial gauge fields, limit their application to a broad class of systems, including topological semimetals. Here we derive several axial field theory dualities in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions by developing an axial slave-rotor approach capable of accounting for the axial anomaly. Our 2+1-dimensional duality suggests the existence of a dual, critical surface theory for strained three-dimensional non-symmorphic topological insulators. Our 3+1-dimensional duality maps free Dirac fermions to Dirac fermions coupled to emergent U(1) and Kalb-Ramond vector and axial gauge fields. Upon fixing an axial field configuration that breaks Lorentz invariance, this duality maps free to interacting Weyl semimetals, thereby suggesting that the quantization of the non-linear circular photogalvanic effect can be robust to certain interactions. Our work emphasizes how axial and Lorentz-breaking dualities improve our understanding of topological matter.

Non-Perturbative Explorations of Chiral Rings in 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ SCFTs

Abstract:We study the conditions under which 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal field theories (SCFTs) have multiplets housing operators that are chiral with respect to an $\mathcal{N}=1$ subalgebra. Our main focus is on the set of often-ignored and relatively poorly understood $\overline{\mathcal{B}}$ representations. These multiplets typically evade direct detection by the most popular non-perturbative 4d $\mathcal{N}=2$ tools and correspondences. In spite of this fact, we demonstrate the ubiquity of $\overline{\mathcal{B}}$ multiplets and show they are associated with interesting phenomena. For example, we give a purely algebraic proof that they are present in all local unitary $\mathcal{N}>2$ SCFTs. We also show that $\overline{\mathcal{B}}$ multiplets exist in $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories with rank greater than one and a conformal manifold or a freely generated Coulomb branch. Using recent topological quantum field theory results, we argue that certain $\overline{\mathcal{B}}$ multiplets exist in broad classes of theories with the $\mathbb{Z}_2$-valued 't Hooft anomaly for $Sp(N)$ global symmetry. Motivated by these statements, we then study the question of whether $\overline{\mathcal{B}}$ multiplets exist in rank-one SCFTs with exactly $\mathcal{N}=2$ SUSY. We conclude with various open questions.

Abstract:In this paper, we show the equivalence between two seemingly distinct 2d TQFTs: one comes from the “Coulomb branch index” of the class 𝒮 theory T[Σ,G] on L(k,1) × S^1 , the other is the ^L G “equivariant Verlinde formula”, or equivalently partition function of ^L G_ℂ complex Chern–Simons theory on Σ× S^1 . We first derive this equivalence using the M-theory geometry and show that the gauge groups appearing on the two sides are naturally G and its Langlands dual ^L G . When G is not simply-connected, we provide a recipe of computing the index of T[Σ,G] as summation over the indices of T[Σ,G̃] with non-trivial background ’t Hooft fluxes, where G̃ is the universal cover of G . Then we check explicitly this relation between the Coulomb index and the equivariant Verlinde formula for G=SU(2) or SO (3). In the end, as an application of this newly found relation, we consider the more general case where G is SU ( N ) or PSU ( N ) and show that equivariant Verlinde algebra can be derived using field theory via (generalized) Argyres–Seiberg duality. We also attach a Mathematica notebook that can be used to compute the SU (3) equivariant Verlinde coefficients.

Abstract:We study integrable models in the context of the recently discovered Gauge/YBE correspondence, where the Yang-Baxter equation (YBE) is promoted to a duality between two supersymmetric gauge theories. We study flavored elliptic genus of 2d N = (2, 2) quiver gauge theories, which are defined from statistical lattices regarded as quiver diagrams. Our R-matrices are written in terms of theta functions and simplify considerably when the gauge groups at the quiver nodes are Abelian. We also discuss the modularity properties of the R-matrix, reduction of 2d index to 1d Witten index, and string theory realizations of our theories.
