Abstract:Proving a conjecture of Dennis Johnson, we show that the Torelli subgroup of the mapping class group has a finite generating set whose size grows cubically with respect to the genus of the surface. Our main tool is a new space called the handle graph on which the Torelli group acts cocompactly.

Abstract:Johnson showed that the genus 1 bounding pair maps generate the Torelli group of a surface when its genus is at least 3. We show that this generalizes: apart from straightforward exceptions, the bounding pair maps of any fixed genus also generate the Torelli group. We give some applications of this result to normal subgroups of mapping class groups acting on curve complexes.

Abstract:We use the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula to calculate the Hirzebruch ?y genus Xy(S[n]), where S[n] is the Hilbert scheme of points of length n of a surface S. Combinatorial interpretation of the weights of the fixed points of the natural torus action on ( 2)[n] is used. This is the first step to prove a conjectural formula about the elliptic genus of the Hilbert schemes.

Abstract:The mapping class group ${\Gamma}_g^ 1$ of a closed orientable surface of genus $g \geq 1$ with one marked point can be identified, by the Nielsen action, with a subgroup of the group of orientation preserving homeomorphims of the circle. This inclusion pulls back the powers of the discrete universal Euler class producing classes $\text{E}^n \in H^{2n}({\Gamma}_g^1;\mathbb{Z})$ for all $n\geq 1$. In this paper we study the power $n=g,$ and prove: $\text{E}^g$ is a torsion class which generates a cyclic subgroup of $H^{2g}({\Gamma}_g^1;\mathbb{Z})$ whose order is a positive integer multiple of $4g(2g+1)(2g-1)$.

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we construct mod 2 elliptic genera on manifolds of dimensions 8k+1, 8k+2 by mod 2 index formulas of Dirac operators. They are given by mod 2 modular forms or mod 2 automorphic functions. We also obtain an integral formula for the mod 2 index of the Dirac operator. As a by-product we find topological obstructions to group actions. In the second part, we construct higher elliptic genera and prove some of their rigidity properties under group actions. In the third part we write down characteristic series for all Witten genera by Jacobi theta-functions. The modular property and transformation formulas of elliptic genera then follow easily. We shall also prove that Krichever's genera, which come from integrable systems, can be written as indices of twisted Dirac operators forSU-manifolds. Some general discussions about elliptic genera are given.
On the Torsion Generators of the Mapping Class Groups

Abstract:We study torsion generators for the (extended) mapping class group or the extended mapping class group of a closed connected orientable surface of genus g. We show that for every g is grater than or equal to 14, mapping class group can be generated by two torsion elements of order g+1 if g is even, and of orders g+1 and g+1 if g is odd. Also for g grater than or equal to 16, mapping class group can be generated by two torsion elements of orders g+1 if g+1 is not divisible by 3, and of orders g+1 and g+1 if g+1 is divisible by 3. Similarly, we obtain two torsion elements generating extended mapping class groups.

Abstract:Let $T_{g,n}$ be a compact orientable topological surface of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points and let $M(g,n)$ denote its mapping class group. We study the action on the fundamental group of the surface induced by the self-homeomorphisms of the mapping class group by describing completely the case of positive genus. In order to do so, we use a presentation for the mapping class group with generators the Humphries generators and compute their images as elements of the outer automorphism group of the fundamental group, since the action is defined only up to conjugation.

Abstract:We prove that the mapping class group of a closed connected orientable surface of genus $g$ is generated by two elements of order $g$ for $g\geq 6$. Moreover, for $g\geq 7$ we found a generating set of two elements, of order $g$ and $g'$ which is the least divisor of $g$ such that $g'>2$. Furthermore, we proved that it is generated by two elements of order $g/\gcd (g,k)$ for $g\geq 3k^2+4k+1$ and any positive integer $k$.

Abstract:Let $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ be the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface of genus $g \geq 1$, and let $\mathrm{LMod}_{p}(X)$ be the liftable mapping class group associated with a finite-sheeted branched cover $p:S \to X$, where $X$ is a hyperbolic surface. For $k \geq 2$, let $p_k: S_{k(g-1)+1} \to S_g$ be the standard $k$-sheeted regular cyclic cover. In this paper, we show that $\{\mathrm{LMod}_{p_k}(S_g)\}_{k \geq 2}$ forms an infinite family of self-normalizing subgroups in $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$, which are also maximal when $k$ is prime. Furthermore, we derive explicit finite generating sets for $\mathrm{LMod}_{p_k}(S_g)$ for $g \geq 3$ and $k \geq 2$, and $\mathrm{LMod}_{p_2}(S_2)$. For $g \geq 2$, as an application of our main result, we also derive a generating set for $\mathrm{LMod}_{p_2}(S_g) \cap C_{\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)}(\iota)$, where $C_{\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)}(\iota)$ is the centralizer of the hyperelliptic involution $\iota \in \mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$. Let $\mathcal{L}$ be the infinite ladder surface, and let $q_g : \mathcal{L} \to S_g$ be the standard infinite-sheeted cover induced by $\langle h^{g-1} \rangle$ where $h$ is the standard handle shift on $\mathcal{L}$. As a final application, we derive a finite generating set for $\mathrm{LMod}_{q_g}(S_g)$ for $g \geq 3$.

Topological normal generation of big mapping class groups

Abstract:A topological group $G$ is topologically normally generated if there is $g \in G$ such that the normal closure of $g$ is dense in $G$. Suppose $S$ is a tame, infinite type surface whose $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ is CB generated. We prove that if the end space of $S$ is countable, then $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ is topologically normally generated if and only if $S$ is uniquely self-similar. Moreover, if the end space of $S$ is uncountable, we give a sufficient condition for $S$ that $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ is topologically normally generated. As a result, we provide uncountably many examples, each of which is not telescoping and $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ is topologically normally generated. We also proved the semidirect product structure of $\mathrm{FMap}(S)$, which is a subgroup of $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ that fixes all isolated maximal ends pointwise. Finally we show that the minimum number of normal generators of $\mathrm{Map}(S)$ is bounded both below and above by constants, which both depending only on the topology of $S$. The upper bound grows quadratically with respect to the constant.

Abstract:Our main goal is to determine, under certain restrictions, the maximal closed connected subgroups of simple algebraic groups containing a regular torus. We call a torus regular if its centralizer is abelian. We also obtain some results of independent interest. In particular, we determine the irreducible representations of simple algebraic groups whose non-zero weights occur with multiplicity 1.

Abstract:Generalizing the star graphs of Müller-Stach and Westrich, we describe a class of graphs whose associated graph hypersurface is equipped with a non-trivial torus action. For such graphs, we show that the Euler characteristic of the corresponding projective graph hypersurface complement is zero. In contrast, we also show that the Euler characteristic in question can take any integer value for a suitable graph. This disproves a conjecture of Aluffi in a strong sense.

Abstract:Let $IA_n$ denote the group of $IA$-automorphisms of a free group of rank $n$, and let $\mathcal I_n^b$ denote the Torelli subgroup of the mapping class group of an orientable surface of genus $n$ with $b$ boundary components, $b=0,1$. In 1935 Magnus proved that $IA_n$ is finitely generated for all $n$, and in 1983 Johnson proved that $\mathcal I_n^b$ is finitely generated for $n\geq 3$. It was recently shown that for each $k\in\mathbb N$, the $k^{\rm th}$ terms of the lower central series $\gamma_k IA_n$ and $\gamma_k\mathcal I_n^b$ are finitely generated when $n>>k$; however, no information about finite generating sets was known for $k>1$. The main goal of this paper is to construct an explicit finite generating set for $\gamma_2 IA_n = [IA_n,IA_n]$ and almost explicit finite generating sets for $\gamma_2\mathcal I_n^b$ and the Johnson kernel, which contains $\gamma_2\mathcal I_n^b$ as a finite index subgroup.

Abstract:In an earlier work we used a path integral analysis to propose a higher genus generalization of the elliptic genus. We found a cobordism invariant parametrized by Teichmuller space. Here we simplify the formula and study the behavior of our invariant under the action of the mapping class group of the Riemann surface. We find that our invariant is a modular function with multiplier just as in genus one.

Abstract:We prove that second rational homology of the Torelli group of an orientable closed surface of genus g is finite dimensional for g at least 51. This rules out the simplest obstruction to the Torelli group being finitely presented and provides a partial answer to a question of Bestvina.

Abstract:A conjecture of Broaddus is proven, giving a simple characterisation of a representative of the unique orbit of the action of the mapping class group on the homology of Harvey's complex of curves for any genus surface. Abstract:Let $G$ be a simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field and let $X$ be an irreducible subvariety of $G^r$ with $r \geqslant 2$. In this paper, we consider the general problem of determining if there exists a tuple $(x_1, \ldots, x_r) \in X$ such that $\langle x_1, \ldots, x_r \rangle$ is Zariski dense in $G$. We are primarily interested in the case where $X = C_1 \times \cdots \times C_r$ and each $C_i$ is a conjugacy class of $G$ comprising elements of prime order modulo the center of $G$. In this setting, our main theorem gives a complete solution to the problem when $G$ is a symplectic or orthogonal group. By combining our results with earlier work on linear and exceptional groups, this gives a complete solution for all simple algebraic groups. We also present several applications. For example, we use our main theorem to show that many faithful representations of symplectic and orthogonal groups are generically free. We also establish new asymptotic results on the probabilistic generation of finite simple groups by pairs of prime order elements, completing a line of research initiated by Liebeck and Shalev over 25 years ago.
