Abstract:Multivariate multipoint evaluation is the problem of evaluating a multivariate polynomial, given as a coefficient vector, simultaneously at multiple evaluation points. In this work, we show that there exists a deterministic algorithm for multivariate multipoint evaluation over any finite field $\mathbb {F} $ that outputs the evaluations of an m -variate polynomial of degree less than d in each variable at N points in time \[ (d^m+N)^{1+o(1)}\cdot {\rm poly}(m,d,\log |\mathbb {F}|) \] for all $m\in \mathbb {N} $ and all sufficiently large $d\in \mathbb {N} $ . A previous work of Kedlaya and Umans (FOCS 2008, SICOMP 2011) achieved the same time complexity when the number of variables m is at most d o (1) and had left the problem of removing this condition as an open problem. A recent work of Bhargava, Ghosh, Kumar and Mohapatra (STOC 2022) answered this question when the underlying field is not too large and has characteristic less than d o (1) . In this work, we remove this constraint on the number of variables over all finite fields, thereby answering the question of Kedlaya and Umans over all finite fields. Our algorithm relies on a non-trivial combination of ideas from three seemingly different previously known algorithms for multivariate multipoint evaluation, namely the algorithms of Kedlaya and Umans, that of Björklund, Kaski and Williams (IPEC 2017, Algorithmica 2019), and that of Bhargava, Ghosh, Kumar and Mohapatra, together with a result of Bombieri and Vinogradov from analytic number theory about the distribution of primes in an arithmetic progression. We also present a second algorithm for multivariate multipoint evaluation that is completely elementary and in particular, avoids the use of the Bombieri–Vinogradov Theorem. However, it requires a mild assumption that the field size is bounded by an exponential tower in d of bounded height . More specifically, our second algorithm solves the multivariate multipoint evaluation problem over a finite field $\mathbb {F} $ in time \[ (d^m+N)^{1+o(1)}\cdot {\rm poly}(m,d,\log |\mathbb {F}|) \] for all $m\in \mathbb {N} $ and all sufficiently large $d\in \mathbb {N} $ , provided that the size of the finite field $\mathbb {F} $ is at most (exp(exp(exp(⋅⋅⋅(exp( d ))))), where the height of this tower of exponentials is fixed.

Abstract:The work in this paper is to initiate a theory of testing monomials in multivariate polynomials. The central question is to ask whether a polynomial represented by certain economically compact structure has a multilinear monomial in its sum-product expansion. The complexity aspects of this problem and its variants are investigated with two objectives. One is to understand how this problem relates to critical problems in complexity, and if so to what extent. The other is to exploit possibilities of applying algebraic properties of polynomials to the study of those problems. A series of results about ΠΣΠ and ΠΣ polynomials are obtained in this paper, laying a basis for further study along this line.
High Rate Multivariate Polynomial Evaluation Codes

Abstract:The classical Reed-Muller codes over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ are based on evaluations of $m$-variate polynomials of degree at most $d$ over a product set $U^m$, for some $d$ less than $|U|$. Because of their good distance properties, as well as the ubiquity and expressive power of polynomials, these codes have played an influential role in coding theory and complexity theory. This is especially so in the setting of $U$ being ${\mathbb{F}}_q$ where they possess deep locality properties. However, these Reed-Muller codes have a significant limitation in terms of the rate achievable -- the rate cannot be more than $\frac{1}{m{!}} = \exp(-m \log m)$. In this work, we give the first constructions of multivariate polynomial evaluation codes which overcome the rate limitation -- concretely, we give explicit evaluation domains $S \subseteq \mathbb{F}_q^m$ on which evaluating $m$-variate polynomials of degree at most $d$ gives a good code. For $m= O(1)$, these new codes have relative distance $\Omega(1)$ and rate $1 - \epsilon$ for any $\epsilon > 0$. In fact, we give two quite different constructions, and for both we develop efficient decoding algorithms for these codes that can decode from half the minimum distance. The first of these codes is based on evaluating multivariate polynomials on simplex-like sets whereas the second construction is more algebraic, and surprisingly (to us), has some strong locality properties, specifically, we show that they are locally testable.

Abstract:We design nearly-linear time numerical algorithms for the problem of multivariate multipoint evaluation over the fields of rational, real and complex numbers. We consider both \emph{exact} and \emph{approximate} versions of the algorithm. The input to the algorithms are (1) coefficients of an $m$-variate polynomial $f$ with degree $d$ in each variable, and (2) points $a_1,..., a_N$ each of whose coordinate has value bounded by one and bit-complexity $s$. * Approximate version: Given additionally an accuracy parameter $t$, the algorithm computes rational numbers $\beta_1,\ldots, \beta_N$ such that $|f(a_i) - \beta_i| \leq \frac{1}{2^t}$ for all $i$, and has a running time of $((Nm + d^m)(s + t))^{1 + o(1)}$ for all $m$ and all sufficiently large $d$. * Exact version (when over rationals): Given additionally a bound $c$ on the bit-complexity of all evaluations, the algorithm computes the rational numbers $f(a_1), ... , f(a_N)$, in time $((Nm + d^m)(s + c))^{1 + o(1)}$ for all $m$ and all sufficiently large $d$. . Prior to this work, a nearly-linear time algorithm for multivariate multipoint evaluation (exact or approximate) over any infinite field appears to be known only for the case of univariate polynomials, and was discovered in a recent work of Moroz (FOCS 2021). In this work, we extend this result from the univariate to the multivariate setting. However, our algorithm is based on ideas that seem to be conceptually different from those of Moroz (FOCS 2021) and crucially relies on a recent algorithm of Bhargava, Ghosh, Guo, Kumar & Umans (FOCS 2022) for multivariate multipoint evaluation over finite fields, and known efficient algorithms for the problems of rational number reconstruction and fast Chinese remaindering in computational number theory.

Fast Approximate Polynomial Multipoint Evaluation and Applications

Abstract:It is well known that, using fast algorithms for polynomial multiplication and division, evaluation of a polynomial $F \in \mathbb{C}[x]$ of degree $n$ at $n$ complex-valued points can be done with $\tilde{O}(n)$ exact field operations in $\mathbb{C},$ where $\tilde{O}(\cdot)$ means that we omit polylogarithmic factors. We complement this result by an analysis of approximate multipoint evaluation of $F$ to a precision of $L$ bits after the binary point and prove a bit complexity of $\tilde{O}(n(L + \tau + n\Gamma)),$ where $2^\tau$ and $2^\Gamma,$ with $\tau, \Gamma \in \mathbb{N}_{\ge 1},$ are bounds on the magnitude of the coefficients of $F$ and the evaluation points, respectively. In particular, in the important case where the precision demand dominates the other input parameters, the complexity is soft-linear in $n$ and $L$. Our result on approximate multipoint evaluation has some interesting consequences on the bit complexity of further approximation algorithms which all use polynomial evaluation as a key subroutine. Of these applications, we discuss in detail an algorithm for polynomial interpolation and for computing a Taylor shift of a polynomial. Furthermore, our result can be used to derive improved complexity bounds for algorithms to refine isolating intervals for the real roots of a polynomial. For all of the latter algorithms, we derive near-optimal running times.

Abstract:Let $f_1,\dots,f_m$ be polynomials in $n$ variables with coefficients in a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$. We estimate the number of points $\underline{x}$ in $\mathbb{F}_q^n$ such that each value $f_i(\underline{x})$ is a nonzero square in $\mathbb{F}_q$. The error term is especially small when the $f_i$ define smooth projective quadrics with nonsingular intersections. We improve the error term in a recent work by Asgarli--Yip on mutual position of smooth quadrics.

Solving Polynomial Equations Over Finite Fields

Abstract:We present a randomized algorithm for solving low-degree polynomial equation systems over finite fields faster than exhaustive search. In order to do so, we follow a line of work by Lokshtanov, Paturi, Tamaki, Williams, and Yu (SODA 2017), Björklund, Kaski, and Williams (ICALP 2019), and Dinur (SODA 2021). In particular, we generalize Dinur's algorithm for $\mathbb{F}_2$ to all finite fields, in particular the "symbolic interpolation" of Björklund, Kaski, and Williams, and we use an efficient trimmed multipoint evaluation and interpolation procedure for multivariate polynomials over finite fields by Van der Hoeven and Schost (AAECC 2013). The running time of our algorithm matches that of Dinur's algorithm for $\mathbb{F}_2$ and is significantly faster than the one of Lokshtanov et al. for $q>2$. We complement our results with tight conditional lower bounds that, surprisingly, we were not able to find in the literature. In particular, under the strong exponential time hypothesis, we prove that it is impossible to solve $n$-variate low-degree polynomial equation systems over $\mathbb{F}_q$ in time $O((q-\varepsilon)^{n})$. As a bonus, we show that under the counting version of the strong exponential time hypothesis, it is impossible to compute the number of roots of a single $n$-variate low-degree polynomial over $\mathbb{F}_q$ in time ${O((q-\varepsilon)^{n})}$; this generalizes a result of Williams (SOSA 2018) from $\mathbb{F}_2$ to all finite fields.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of a robust parameterized arithmetic circuit for the evaluation of algebraic families of multivariate polynomials. Based on this notion, we present a computation model, adapted to Scientific Computing, which captures all known branching parsimonious symbolic algorithms in effective Algebraic Geometry. We justify this model by arguments from Software Engineering. Finally we exhibit a class of simple elimination problems of effective Algebraic Geometry which require exponential time to be solved by branching parsimonious algorithms of our computation model.

Abstract:This paper deals with properties of the algebraic variety defined as the set of zeros of a "deficient" sequence of multivariate polynomials. We consider two types of varieties: ideal-theoretic complete intersections and absolutely irreducible varieties. For these types, we establish improved bounds on the dimension of the set of deficient systems of each type over an arbitrary field. On the other hand, we establish improved upper bounds on the number of systems of each type over a finite field.

Abstract:We develop several notions of multiplicity for linear factors of multivariable polynomials over different arithmetics (hyperfields). The key example is multiplicities over the hyperfield of signs, which encapsulates the arithmetic of $\mathbf{R}/\mathbf{R}_{>0}$. These multiplicities give us various upper and lower bounds on the number of linear factors with a given sign pattern in terms of the signs of the coefficients of the factored polynomial. Using resultants, we can transform a square system of polynomials into a single polynomial whose multiplicities give us bounds on the number of positive solutions to the system. In particular, we are able to re-derive the lower bound of Itenberg and Roy on any potential upper bound for the number of solutions to a system of equations with a given sign pattern. In addition, our techniques also explain a particular counterexample of Li and Wang to Itenberg and Roy's proposed upper bound.

Abstract:For a large class of polynomials, the standard method of polynomial evaluation, Horner's method, can be very inaccurate. The alternative method given here is on average 100 to 1000 times more accurate than Horner's Method. The number of floating point operations is twice that of Horner's method for a single evaluation. For repeated evaluations at nearby points, the number of floating point operations is only doubled for the first evaluation, and is the same as Horner's Method for all following evaluations. This new method is tested with random polynomials.

Abstract:This article is concerned with an extension of univariate Chebyshev polynomials of the first kind to the multivariate setting, where one chases best approximants to specific monomials by polynomials of lower degree relative to the uniform norm. Exploiting the Moment-SOS hierarchy, we devise a versatile semidefinite-programming-based procedure to compute such best approximants, as well as associated signatures. Applying this procedure in three variables leads to the values of best approximation errors for all monomials up to degree six on the euclidean ball, the simplex, and the cross-polytope. Furthermore, inspired by numerical experiments, we obtain explicit expressions for Chebyshev polynomials in two cases unresolved before, namely for the monomial $x_1^2 x_2^2 x_3$ on the euclidean ball and for the monomial $x_1^2 x_2 x_3$ on the simplex.

Abstract:Oblivious polynomial evaluation protocol is one of the fundamental protocols in secure multi-party computation domain. The existing oblivious polynomial evaluation protocol, only handling the univariate polynomial evaluation problems, is not enough to meet the demands in practice. In this paper, we propose a multivariate oblivious polynomial evaluation protocol depending on secure two-party scalar product protocol and homomorphic encryption scheme. To the best of our knowledge, this protocol is the first one to cope with both the univariate and multivariate oblivious polynomial evaluation problems. When we use our protocol and the existing one to solve the univariate oblivious polynomial evaluation problem, the performance analysis shows that at a same security level, the communication and computational overheads of our protocol are approximate O(1/root vertical bar N vertical bar log vertical bar N vertical bar) times of those of the existing protocol, where vertical bar N vertical bar is the number of bits of the modulus N of the public key encryption schemes used in the two protocols.

Abstract:We study the computational complexity of a criterion and an algorithm for diagonalization of multivariate homogeneous polynomials, that is, expressing them as sums of powers of independent linear forms. They are based on Harrison's center theory and only require solving linear and quadratic systems of equations. Detailed descriptions and computational complexity of each step of the algorithm are provided. The complexity analysis focuses on the impacts of problem sizes, including the number of variables and the degree of given polynomials. We show that this algorithm runs in polynomial time and validate it through numerical experiments. Other diagonalization algorithms are reviewed and compared in terms of complexity.

On the Complexity and Parallel Implementation of Hensel's Lemma and Weierstrass Preparation

Abstract:Hensel's lemma, combined with repeated applications of Weierstrass preparation theorem, allows for the factorization of polynomials with multivariate power series coefficients. We present a complexity analysis for this method and leverage those results to guide the load-balancing of a parallel implementation to concurrently update all factors. In particular, the factorization creates a pipeline where the terms of degree k of the first factor are computed simultaneously with the terms of degree k-1 of the second factor, etc. An implementation challenge is the inherent irregularity of computational work between factors, as our complexity analysis reveals. Additional resource utilization and load-balancing is achieved through the parallelization of Weierstrass preparation. Experimental results show the efficacy of this mixed parallel scheme, achieving up to 9x parallel speedup on 12 cores.

Abstract:We provide a new proof of the multivariate version of Christol's theorem about algebraic power series with coefficients in finite fields, as well as of its extension to perfect ground fields of positive characteristic obtained independently by Denef and Lipshitz, Sharif and Woodcok, and Harase. Our proof is elementary, effective, and allows for much sharper estimates. We discuss various applications of such estimates, in particular to a problem raised by Deligne concerning the algebraicity degree of reductions modulo $p$ of diagonals of multivariate algebraic power series with integer coefficients.

Abstract:A multilinear polynomial is a multivariate polynomial of degree at most one in each variable. This paper introduces a new scheme to commit to multilinear polynomials and to later prove evaluations thereof. The scheme exponentially improves on the added prover costs for evaluation proofs to be zero-knowledge. The construction of the scheme is generic and relies only on the additive homomorphic property of any scheme to commit to univariate polynomials, and on a protocol to prove that committed polynomials satisfy public degree bounds. As the construction requires to check that several committed univariate polynomials do not exceed given, separate bounds, the paper also gives a method to batch executions of any degree-check protocol on homomorphic commitments. For an n -linear polynomial, the instantiation of the scheme with a hiding version of KZG commitments (Kate et al. in: Abe (ed) ASIACRYPT 2010. LNCS, vol 6477, pp 177–194, Springer, Heidelberg, 2010. https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-17373-8_11) leads to a scheme with an evaluation prover that performs only extra (i.e., compared to the variant of the same scheme that is not zero-knowledge) first-group operations to achieve the zero-knowledge property. In contrast, previous constructions require an extra multi-scalar multiplication. The instantiation does so without any concessions on the other performance measures compared to the state of the art.

Abstract:Recent developments in multivariate polynomial solving algorithms have made algebraic cryptanalysis a plausible threat to many cryptosystems. However, theoretical complexity estimates have shown this kind of attack unfeasible for most realistic applications. In this paper we present a strategy for computing Gröbner basis that challenges those complexity estimates. It uses a flexible partial enlargement technique together with reduced row echelon forms to generate lower degree elements–mutants. This new strategy surpasses old boundaries and obligates us to think of new paradigms for estimating complexity of Gröbner basis computation. The new proposed algorithm computed a Gröbner basis of a degree 2 random system with 32 variables and 32 equations using 30 GB which was never done before by any known Gröbner bases solver.
