Abstract:A recent announcement of some pyramids, buried under the sand of Egypt and discovered by means of infrared remote sensing, renewed the interest on the archaeological surveys aided by satellites. Abstract:The aim of this paper is in stimulating the use of satellite imagery, in particular the free service of Google Maps, to investigate the distribution of the agricultural technique of terraced hills in Andean countries, near Titicaca Lake. In fact, satellite maps can give a clear view of the overall surface modified by human work, being then a precious help for on-site archaeological researches and for historical analysis. Satellite imagery is also able to give the distribution of burial and worship places. The paper discusses some examples near the Titicaca Lake.

Abstract:The paper is proposing a survey of a region in Sudan, the Bayuda desert, using the satellite images as obtained from Google Maps. The images reveal the ring granitic structure of the region enclosed by a bend of river Nile. To enhance the features of the landform, images are processed with a method based on fractional calculus, able to increase the rendering of edges without deteriorating the overall quality of images. Besides the ringed structure of the region, a huge crater-like structure with a diameter of 10 km is evidenced.

Abstract:The World Heritage Committee has been meeting to discuss the arrangements of existing World Heritage Sites, and, on 22–26 October, the area from Giza to the Dahshur was included in the list of World Heritage Sites. According to the Egyptian Antiquities Authority (EAA), the groundwater levels at the Pyramids Plateau are too shallow, which threatens the ancient Sphinx and Pyramids in Giza, Egypt. In addition, many geophysical studies have been carried out in the archaeological area of Giza, which prove that the area is facing the risk of a high level of groundwater, specifically threatening the Sphinx. Recent developments in Earth observation have helped in the field of land monitoring such as land use changes, risk observation, and the creation of models for protecting cultural heritage sites. This study aimed to examine the impact of land use changes on on the archaeological sites of the Giza Necropolis area by integrating various data sources including optical satellite imagery and SRTM data during the period of 1965–2019. A historical database of Corona 1965 and Landsat 2009 data was investigated along with the new acquisitions of Sentinel-2 2016 and Sentinel-1 2016 and 2019. In addition, the radar Sentinel-1 SLC data were collected and analyzed for calculating the land subsidence value in the area of interest through two periods between 6–30 July 2016 and 30 July–15 December 2016. Various methods were implemented, including cluster outliers, the Moran index, and spatial autocorrelation to examine the changes in urban masses. Additionally, the relationship between groundwater leakage and land subsidence in the region was investigated. The analysis was carried out using Envi5.3, ArcMap10.6.1, and SNAP6.0 software to extract spatial data from the raw data. The results from our investigation highlighted rapid changes in urban areas between 1965 and 2019. The data obtained and analyzed from optical and radar satellite imagery showed that changes in land use can cause changes in the topographic situation by decreasing the level of groundwater, which adversely affects Egyptian monumental pyramids and the Sphinx. Land use analysis showed that the urban area represented 7.63% of the total area of the study area in 1965, however it reached 32.72% in 2009, approximately half of the total area in 2016, and in 2019, the urban mass area increased to nearly two-thirds of the total area. The annual growth rate between 1965 and 2019 was estimated by nearly 0.642 km2/year. These land-use changes possibly affected the land subsidence value (−0.0138 m), causing the rising groundwater level close to the Sphinx. Using the information obtained from our RS- and GIS-based analysis, mitigation strategies have also been identified to support archaeological area preservation.

Abstract:In some previous papers we proposed the use of free software for a processing of the Google satellite imagery. Here we discuss the use of a wavelet filter for the same purposes. This filter is a tool included in a freely downloadable software (Iris), well-known for the processing of astronomical images. Combining the image obtained after applying the wavelet filter, with an image created with Gimp and AstroFracTool, the visibility of the landforms, as obtained from Google Maps, is strongly increased. Among several possible examples, we proposed a crater, a paleochannel and the Great Bend of the Nile.

Abstract:The aim of this work is to perform a multitemporal analysis using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform for the detection of changes in urban areas using optical data and specific machine learning (ML) algorithms. As a case study, Cairo City has been identified, in Egypt country, as one of the five most populous megacities of the last decade in the world. Classification and change detection analysis of the region of interest (ROI) have been carried out from July 2013 to July 2021. Results demonstrate the validity of the proposed method in identifying changed and unchanged urban areas over the selected period. Furthermore, this work aims to evidence the growing significance of GEE as an efficient cloud-based solution for managing large quantities of satellite data.

Abstract:The paper discusses some examples of image processing applied to improve optical satellite imagery of small craters (Kamil, Veevers, Haviland). The examples show that image processing can be quite useful for further in-situ researches, because the resultant imagery helps to have a better picture of the crater shape and of the distribution of debris about it. The paper is also disclosing an interesting underwater structure, with shape and size of a small crater, located on the coast-line of Sudan.

Abstract:In archaeo‐geophysical investigations, the accuracy and resolution of the generated geophysical models are crucial parameters for excavation decision. Therefore, the combined use of different geophysical data sets is necessary to improve the interpretability of archaeological ruins, particularly in case of low physical contrast objects. The present study's objective is to validate the outputs of integrated ground penetrating radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys in Tanis, which is considered one of the most important archaeological sites in the Nile Delta, Egypt. The GPR survey was carried out along an area of 24 × 31.5 m with profile interval of 0.5 m in two orthogonal directions using 100, 200 and 600 MHz shielded antenna. Moreover, nine ERT profiles were performed along the same GPR lines for comparison and integration using Wenner‐beta (WB) and dipole–dipole (DD) arrays with 1 m electrode spacing and 3 m profile spacing. In addition, the ERT measurements were executed by implementing two tie lines of the same length, electrode spacing and electrode arrays to reduce the effect of banding or directional bias. The processed 2D GPR and ERT profiles have illustrated series of mud‐brick walls within the top 2 m in silt–clay background which is underlined by the turtle‐back of Sand Island. In such conditions, the mud‐brick walls in conductive soils with complex spatial distributions have produced tricky and difficult anomalies to be interpreted using only 2D data sets. To overcome this challenging case, the GPR orthogonal profiles were collated in 3D domain, while the ERT profiles were gathered and inverted using 3D robust inversion algorithm and validated with an identified mud‐brick wall. Therefore, the created 3D visualizations demonstrated the efficiency of the joint use of the ERT and GPR surveys as an enhanced mapping tool for buried archaeological ruins and can be used at similar archaeological sites all over the world.

Abstract:The Great Bend of the river Nile contains the Bayuda region with its volcanic core. Along the river, a fertile strip of land has attracting human settlement for thousands of years and is then rich of archaeological sites. The distribution of the sites near the Nile can be detected using Google Maps imagery. We can see many area covered by small mounds, probably burial sites. Some of the archaeological places are currently under the water of the Merowe Dam. With the satellite imagery, we have a portrait of the area close the dam before the closing of its gates.

Abstract:Throughout the world, cultural heritage sites are under the direct threat of damage or destruction due to developing environmental and anthropogenic hazards, such as urban expansion, looting, and rising water levels. Exacerbating this problem is the fact that many of the most vulnerable sites’ exact locations and/or full spatial extents have yet to be uncovered, making any attempts at their protection exceedingly difficult. However, the utilization of earth observation data has recently emerged as an unmatched tool in the exploration and (digital) preservation of endangered archaeological sites. The presented research employs very high-resolution WorldView-3 satellite imagery (~30 cm) for identifying and delineating previously unknown subsurface archaeological structures at the ancient Egyptian site of Hermopolis (el-Ashmunein). A particular emphasis is placed on the application of spectral indices, specifically those looking at vegetation cropmarks and iron oxide levels. Through this analysis, seven promising structures were identified, including three elongated installations, which may have been utilized for storage purposes, and a potential casemate foundation structure. As 2D outlines of structures are often difficult to visualize, the newly identified archaeological features were expanded into a realistic, georeferenced 3D model using the computer programs, SketchUp Pro and Chaos V-Ray. The goal of this 3D model is to ensure that the results derived from this research are more accessible (and tangible) to a wider audience—the scientific community and the public alike. The methodological scheme presented in this article is highly adaptable and with some minor modifications can be replicated for other archaeological sites worldwide.

Abstract:Remote sensing for archaeological investigations using surface response is reasonably well established, however, remote subsurface exploration is limited by depth and penetration and ground resolution. Furthermore, the conservation of archaeological sites requires constant monitoring capability, which is often not feasible between annual field seasons, but may be provided by modern satellite coverage. Here we develop an approach using Sentinel-1 C-band radar backscatter, and Sentinel-2 multispectral data, to map and characterise the site of Qubbet el-Hawa, Egypt. The multispectral bands analysed show similar sensitivity to satellite imagery. However, the radar backscatter is sensitive to exposed known structures, as well as disturbances to soil textural/composition profile due to excavation/erosion. Sub-resolution features such as causeways manifest as a 'radar-break' in the backscatter - a discontinuity in otherwise continuous radar units. Furthermore, the finite subsurface response in the backscatter under the arid conditions of the site means we are able to delineate some shallow subsurface structures and map their orientation beneath the surface in areas not yet excavated. The sensitivity of Sentinel-1 backscatter to soil disturbance and human activity at Qubbet el-Hawa, and the short (~12 day) recurrence time of the satellites, makes it an important tool in heritage conservation.

Abstract:This study shows the results of the analysis of the photogrammetric use of 360-degree cameras in complex heritage-related scenes. The goal is to take advantage of the large field of view provided by these sensors and reduce the number of images used to cover the entire scene compared to those needed using conventional cameras. We also try to minimize problems derived from camera geometry and lens characteristics. In this regard, we used a multi-sensor camera composed of six fisheye lenses, applying photogrammetric procedures to several funerary structures. The methodology includes the analysis of several types of spherical images obtained using different stitching techniques and the comparison of the results of image orientation processes considering these images and the original fisheye images. Subsequently, we analyze the possible use of the fisheye images to model complex scenes by reducing the use of ground control points, thus minimizing the need to apply surveying techniques to determine their coordinates. In this regard, we applied distance constraints based on a previous extrinsic calibration of the camera, obtaining results similar to those obtained using a traditional schema based on points. The results have allowed us to determine the advantages and disadvantages of each type of image and configuration, providing several recommendations regarding their use in complex scenes.

Abstract:Several methods exist for surveying the dunes and estimate their migration rate. Among methods suitable for the macroscopic scale, the use of the satellite images available on Google Earth is a convenient resource, in particular because of its time series. Some examples of the use of this feature of Google Earth are here proposed.

Abstract:In the field of mineral exploration, it is strikingly evident that radioactive-bearing mineralization predominantly resides within granitic intrusions and along structural discontinuities. Consequently, the comprehensive mapping of lithological features emerges as a crucial means of accurately guiding the identification of these mineralizations. The present research is dedicated to enhancing the characterization of granitic rocks located within Egypt’s Central Eastern Desert (El-Missikat and El-Erediya regions). These areas have garnered attention due to their notably high concentrations of radioactive mineralizations, prompting the need for a more in-depth investigation. Despite the study area’s importance for potential radioactive mineral deposits, examining the geological map reveals notable challenges and inconveniences. Our research aims to address these issues using remote sensing data and machine learning algorithms (MLAs). We used image processing techniques, including false-color composites (FCCs), principal component analysis (PCA), and independent component analysis (ICA) to identify eight lithological targets and generate reference maps for the study area.The widely used support vector machine (SVM) was trained with informative image combinations, showing reasonable lithological allocations, especially when it fed with FCC 12-6-2 in RGB. Our study found that incorporating dimensionality-reduction techniques like PCA and ICA with FCCs significantly boosted accuracy by over 15%. Using Sentinel-2 imagery and SVM, we created a novel lithological map for the challenging study area, pinpointing mineralization-rich zones, particularly those linked to shear zones within granitic rocks. This map enhances progress in characterizing rock units, and we strongly advocate the use of dimensionality-reduction techniques, such as PCA and ICA, to feed MLAs. These techniques play a crucial role in producing precise, unbiased lithological maps for complex terrains, aiding in the localization of valuable mineral deposits.

Abstract:Archeological prospection and 3D reconstruction are increasingly combined in large archeological projects that serve both site investigation and dissemination of results. This paper describes and validates a method for using multispectral imagery captured by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), subsurface geophysical surveys, and stratigraphic excavations to evaluate the role of 3D semantic visualizations for the collected data. The information recorded by various methods will be experimentally reconciled using the Extended Matrix and other original open-source tools, keeping both the scientific processes that generated them and the derived data separate, transparent, and reproducible. This structured information makes immediately accessible the required variety of sources useful for interpretation and reconstructive hypotheses. The application of the methodology will use the first available data from a five-year multidisciplinary investigation project at Tres Tabernae, a Roman site near Rome, where numerous non-destructive technologies, as well as excavation campaigns, will be progressively deployed to explore the site and validate the approaches.
Machine Learning-Based Land Use and Land Cover Mapping Using Multi-Spectral Satellite Imagery: A Case Study in Egypt

Abstract:Satellite images provide continuous access to observations of the Earth, making environmental monitoring more convenient for certain applications, such as tracking changes in land use and land cover (LULC). This paper is aimed to develop a prediction model for mapping LULC using multi-spectral satellite images, which were captured at a spatial resolution of 3 m by a 4-band PlanetScope satellite. The dataset used in the study includes 105 geo-referenced images categorized into 8 LULC different classes. To train this model on both raster and vector data, various machine learning strategies such as Support Vector Machines (SVMs), Decision Trees (DTs), Random Forests (RFs), Normal Bayes (NB), and Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) were employed. A set of metrics including precision, recall, F-score, and kappa index are utilized to measure the accuracy of the model. Empirical experiments were conducted, and the results show that the ANN achieved a classification accuracy of 97.1%. To the best of our knowledge, this study represents the first attempt to monitor land changes in Egypt that were conducted on high-resolution images with 3 m of spatial resolution. This study highlights the potential of this approach for promoting sustainable land use practices and contributing to the achievement of sustainable development goals. The proposed method can also provide a reliable source for improving geographical services, such as detecting land changes.

Three Years of Google Earth Engine-Based Archaeological Surveys in Iraqi Kurdistan: Results from the Ground

Abstract:This paper presents the results of a three-year survey (2021–2023), conducted in an area of approximately 356 km2 in Iraqi Kurdistan with the aim of identifying previously undetected archaeological sites. Thanks to the development of a multi-temporal approach based on open multispectral satellite data, greater effectiveness was achieved for the recognition of archaeological sites when compared to the use of single archival or freely accessible satellite images, which are typically employed in archaeological research. In particular, the Google Earth Engine services allowed for the efficient utilization of cloud computing resources to handle hundreds of remote sensing images. Using different datasets, namely Landsat 5, Landsat 7 and Sentinel-2, several products were obtained by processing entire stacks of images acquired at different epochs, thus minimizing the adverse effects on site visibility caused by vegetation, crops and cloud coverage and permitting an effective visual inspection and site recognition. Furthermore, spectral signature analysis of every potential site complemented the method. The developed approach was tested on areas that belong to the Land of Nineveh Archaeological Project (LoNAP) and the Upper Greater Zab Archaeological Reconnaissance (UGZAR) project, which had been intensively surveyed in the recent past. This represented an additional challenge to the method, as the most visible and extensive sites (tells) had already been detected. Three years of direct ground-truthing in the field enabled assessment of the outcomes of the remote sensing-based analysis, discovering more than 60 previously undetected sites and confirming the utility of the method for archaeological research in the area of Northern Mesopotamia.

Abstract:This work presents satellite remote sensing research to map data to archaeological sites at risk in regions of war conflicts, supporting the Copernicus Program and the application of Artificial Intelligence to analyze the collected information. It seeks to identify the process of using digital tools to safeguard cultural heritage in the 21st century. The qualitative, exploratory, and explanatory methodology followed the bibliographic survey, as well as the handling of the Copernicus Platform for the analysis of prototyping. The analysis of case studies of Cyprus, Pakistan, and Syria establishes a digital timeline containing the impacts of deterioration of the areas for the proposition of conservation, protection, and restoration measures.

Abstract:Abstract. In recent decades, the geospatial domain has benefitted from technological advances in sensors, methodologies, and processing tools to expand capabilities in mapping applications. Airborne techniques (LiDAR and aerial photogrammetry) generally provide most of the data used for this purpose. However, despite the relevant accuracy of these technologies and the high spatial resolution of airborne data, updates are not sufficiently regular due to significant flight costs and logistics. New possibilities to fill this information gap have emerged with the advent of Very High Resolution (VHR) optical satellite images in the early 2000s. In addition to the high temporal resolution of the cost-effective datasets and their sub-meter geometric resolutions, the synoptic coverage is an unprecedented opportunity for mapping remote areas, multi-temporal analyses, updating datasets and disaster management. For all these reasons, VHR satellite imagery is clearly a relevant study for National Mapping and Cadastral Agencies (NMCAs). This work, supported by EuroSDR, summarises a series of experimental analyses carried out over diverse landscapes to explore the potential of VHR imagery for large-scale mapping.

Abstract:It is known since the 19 century that in the layout of the pyramid field of the pharaohs of the 4 th Egyptian dynasty at Giza, a main axis exists. Indeed, the south-east corners of these monuments align towards the site of the temple of Heliopolis, which was plainly visible in ancient times. It was later discovered that a similar situation occurs in the main pyramid field of the subsequent dynasty at Abu Sir. Here, the northwest corners of three chronologically successive pyramids again voluntarily align towards Heliopolis. However, the temple was in this case not visible, due to the rock outcrop today occupied by the Cairo citadel which blocks the view. In the present paper, a interdisciplinary approach based on historical, topographical and archaeoastronomical analysis is developed in an attempt at understanding such peculiar features, which governed from the very beginning the planning of these wonderful monuments. A general pattern actually arises, which appears to have inspired the choice of the sites and the disposition on the ground of almost all the funerary complexes of the kings during the Old Kingdom. In particular, this pattern helps to explain the choices in the location of the funerary complexes of Niuserre in Abusir and of Unas in Saqqara.
