Abstract:The Bose polaron is a quasiparticle that arises from the interaction between impurities and Bogoliubov excitation in Bose-Einstein condensates, analogous to the polaron formed by electrons and phonons in solid-state physics. In this paper, we investigate the effect of phase separation on weakly coupled and strongly coupled Bose polarons. Our findings reveal that phase separation induces a remarkable alteration in the properties of weakly coupled Bose polarons. However, in the case of strong coupling, phase separation cannot destroy the highly self-trapping state of Bose polarons.

Abstract:We study the occurrence of a Bose-Einstein transition in a dilute gas with repulsive interactions, starting from temperatures above the transition temperature. The formalism, based on the use of Ursell operators, allows us to evaluate the one-particle density operator with more flexibility than in mean-field theories, since it does not necessarily coincide with that of an ideal gas with adjustable parameters (chemical potential, etc.). In a first step, a simple approximation is used (Ursell-Dyson approximation), which allow us to recover results which are similar to those of the usual mean-field theories. In a second step, a more precise treatment of the correlations and velocity dependence of the populations in the system is elaborated. This introduces new physical effects, such as a marked change of the velocity profile just above the transition: low velocities are more populated than in an ideal gas. A consequence of this distortion is an increase of the critical temperature (at constant density) of the Bose gas, in agreement with those of recent path integral Monte-Carlo calculations for hard spheres.

Strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixture: mediated interaction, phase diagram and sound propagation

Abstract:Motivated by recent surprising experimental findings, we develop a strong-coupling theory for Bose-Fermi mixtures capable of treating resonant inter-species interactions while satisfying the compressibility sum rule. We show that the mixture can be stable at large interaction strengths close to resonance, in agreement with the experiment but at odds with the widely used perturbation theory. We also calculate the sound velocity of the Bose gas in the $^{133}$Cs-$^6$Li mixture, again finding good agreement with the experimental observations both at weak and strong interactions. A central ingredient of our theory is the generalization of a fermion mediated interaction to strong Bose-Fermi scatterings and to finite frequencies. This further leads to a predicted hybridization of the sound modes of the Bose and Fermi gases, which can be directly observed using Bragg spectroscopy.

Abstract:The Bose-Einstein condensation of bound pairs made of equally and oppositely charged fermions in a magnetic field is investigated using a relativistic model. The Gaussian fluctuations have been taken into account in order to study the spectrum of bound pairs in the strong coupling region. We found, in the weak coupling region, that the condensation temperature increases with an increasing magnetic field displaying the magnetic catalysis effect. In the strong coupling region, the inverse magnetic catalysis appears when the magnetic field is low and is replaced by the usual magnetic catalysis effect when magnetic field is sufficiently high, in contrast to the nonrelativistic case where the inverse magnetic catalysis prevails in the strong coupling region regardless of the strength of the magnetic field. The resulting response to the magnetic field is the consequence of the competition between the dimensional reduction by Landau orbitals in pairing dynamics and the anisotropy of the kinetic spectrum of the bound pairs. We thus conclude that dimensional reduction dominates in the weak domain and strong coupling one except in the small magnetic field region, where the enhanced fluctuations dominate.

Abstract:We prepare and study strongly interacting two-dimensional Bose gases in the superfluid, the classical Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition, and the vacuum-to-superfluid quantum critical regimes. A wide range of the two-body interaction strength 0.05 < g < 3 is covered by tuning the scattering length and by loading the sample into an optical lattice. Based on the equations of state measurements, we extract the coupling constants as well as critical thermodynamic quantities in different regimes. In the superfluid and the BKT transition regimes, the extracted coupling constants show significant down-shifts from the mean-field and perturbation calculations when g approaches or exceeds one. In the BKT and the quantum critical regimes, all measured thermodynamic quantities show logarithmic dependence on the interaction strength, a tendency confirmed by the extended classical-field and renormalization calculations.

Abstract:The Gibbs state is widely taken to be the equilibrium state of a system in contact with an environment at temperature T . However, non-negligible interactions between system and environment can give rise to an altered state. Here, we derive general expressions for this mean force Gibbs state, valid for any system that interacts with a bosonic reservoir. First, we derive the state in the weak coupling limit and find that, in general, it maintains coherences with respect to the bare system Hamiltonian. Second, we develop a new expansion method suited to investigate the ultrastrong coupling regime. This allows us to derive the explicit form for the mean force Gibbs state, and we find that it becomes diagonal in the basis set by the system-reservoir interaction instead of the system Hamiltonian. Several examples are discussed including a single qubit, a three-level V -system, and two coupled qubits all interacting with bosonic reservoirs. Supersolidity of dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates induced by coupling to fermions

Abstract:We study a mixture of a repulsive dipolar condensate and a degenerate Fermi gas in a quasi-one-dimensional geometry. We demonstrate that the presence of fermions, which attract bosons, drastically changes the behavior of the dipolar condensate. For strong enough boson-fermion attraction, a dipolar Bose-Fermi droplet appears in the mixture, and as the attraction becomes stronger, a roton excitation develops in the Bogoliubov spectrum, leading to the formation of a supersolid, and eventually a crystal of isolated droplets. We describe the system by coupled extended Gross-Pitaevskii (bosons) and Hartree-Fock (fermions) equations. We study the excitation spectrum of the system and identify a number of Goldstone and Higgs modes in the supersolid regime.

Abstract:The usual treatment of a Bose-Fermi mixture relies on weak-coupling Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) and density-functional (DF) Lagrangians, often including the more realistic {perturbative} Lee-Huang-Yang (LHY) corrections. We suggest analytic {non-perturbative} beyond-mean-field Bose and Fermi Lagrangians valid along the crossover from weak- to strong-coupling limits of intra-species interactions consistent with the LHY corrections and the strong-coupling (unitarity) limit for small and large scattering lengths $|a|$, respectively, and use these to study the Bose-Fermi mixture. We study numerically mixing-demixing and spontaneous symmetry breaking in Bose-Fermi mixtures in spherically-symmetric and quasi-one-dimensional traps while the intra-species Bose and Fermi interactions are varied from weak-coupling to strong-coupling <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://limits.The" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> LHY correction is appropriate for medium to weak atomic interactions and diverges for stronger interactions (large scattering length $|a|$), whereas the present beyond-mean-field Lagrangian is finite in the unitarity limit ($|a|\to \infty$). We illustrate our results using the Bose-Fermi $^7$Li-$^6$Li mixture under a spherically-symmetric and a quasi-one-dimensional trap. The results obtained with the present model for density distribution of the Bose-Fermi mixture along the crossover could be qualitatively different from the usual GP-DF Lagrangian with or without LHY corrections. Specifically, we identified spontaneous symmetry breaking and demixing in the present model not found in the usual model with the same values of the parameters.

Phase diagram for strong-coupling Bose polarons

Abstract:Important properties of complex quantum many-body systems and their phase diagrams can often already be inferred from the impurity limit. The Bose polaron problem describing an impurity atom immersed in a Bose-Einstein condensate is a paradigmatic example. One of the most interesting features of this model is the competition between the emergent impurity-mediated attraction between the bosons and their intrinsic repulsion. The arising higher-order correlations make the physics rich and interesting, but also complex to describe theoretically. To tackle this challenge, we develop a quantum chemistry-inspired computational technique and compare two state-of-the-art variational methods that fully include both the boson-impurity and boson-boson interactions on a non-perturbative level. For a sweep of the boson-impurity interaction strength, we find two regimes of qualitatively different behaviour. If the impurity-mediated interactions overcome the repulsion between the bosons, the polaron becomes unstable due to the formation of large bound clusters. If instead the interboson interactions dominate, the impurity will experience a crossover from a polaron into a small molecule. We achieve a unified understanding incorporating both of these regimes and the transition between them. We show that both the instability and crossover regime can be studied in realistic cold-atom experiments. Moreover, we develop a simple analytical model that allows us to interpret these phenomena in the typical Landau framework of first-order phase transitions that turn second-order at a critical endpoint, revealing a deep connection of the Bose polaron model to both few- and many-body physics.

Abstract:Theoretical treatments of non-equilibrium dynamics in strongly interacting Bose-Fermi mixtures are complicated by the inherent non-Gaussian nature of the vacuum two-body physics, invalidating the typical Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov approximation. Here, we apply the cumulant expansion to study non-equilibrium Bose-Fermi mixtures, which allows us to explicitly include the missing non-Gaussian quantum correlations, leading to a consistent dynamical theory of a Bose-Fermi mixture near an interspecies Feshbach resonance. We first apply our theory to a study of atom-pair coherence in the gas, which is significantly enhanced by the competing influences of the Fermi sea and Bose-Einstein condensation, in agreement with analytical calculations. Then, we study the depletion of a degenerate Bose-Fermi mixture following a quench to the unitary regime, characterizing the resulting depletion of the Bose-Einstein condensate, the deformation of the Fermi surface, and the production of molecules. We find that at early times, the population dynamics scale quadratically with the hold time, and define an associated characteristic timescale set by the parameters of the mixture and the width of the Feshbach resonance.

Effect of strong confinement on the order parameter dynamics in fermionic superfluids

Abstract:Fermionic pairing and the superfluid order parameter change dramatically in low-dimensional systems such as high-T$_c$ superconductors. Here we show how the order parameter dynamics, which defines essential collective properties, is modified by strong confinement. Using a model system for strongly correlated superfluidity, an ultracold fermionic gas, we study the response to a weak modulation of the confinement. Surprisingly, we observe a well-defined collective mode throughout the entire crossover from the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) state to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of molecules. Starting in the BCS regime, the excitation energy follows twice the pairing gap, then drops below it in the strongly correlated regime, and finally approaches twice the harmonic level spacing imposed by the confinement in the BEC regime. Its spectral weight vanishes when approaching the superfluid critical temperature. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with an effective field theory, providing strong evidence that amplitude oscillations of the order parameter hybridize with and eventually transform into spatial excitations along the confined direction. The strong modification of the excitation spectrum highlights the relevance of confinement to fermionic superfluids and superconductors, and raises questions about its influence on other fundamental quantities.

Abstract:The coherent characteristics of four trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) conjunct one by one in a ring shape which is divided by two far off-resonant lasers, are studied. Four coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations are used to describe the dynamics of the system. Two kinds of self-trapping effects are discussed in the coupled BECs, and the phase diagrams for different initial conditions and different coupling strengths are discussed. This study can be used to determine interaction parameters between atoms in BEC.
A unified theory of strong coupling Bose polarons: From repulsive polarons to non-Gaussian many-body bound states

Abstract:We address the Bose polaron problem of a mobile impurity interacting strongly with a host Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) through a Feshbach resonance. On the repulsive side at strong couplings, theoretical approaches predict two distinct polaron branches corresponding to attractive and repulsive polarons, but it remains unclear how the two are related. This is partly due to the challenges resulting from a competition of strongly attractive (destabilizing) impurity-boson interactions with weakly repulsive (stabilizing) boson-boson interactions, whose interplay is difficult to describe with contemporary theoretical methods. Here we develop a powerful variational framework that combines Gaussian correlations among impurity-boson scattering states, including up to an infinite number of bosonic excitations, with exact non-Gaussian correlations among bosons occupying an impurity-boson bound state. This variational scheme enables a full treatment of strong nonlinearities arising in the Feshbach molecule on the repulsive side of the resonance. Within this framework, we demonstrate that the interplay of impurity-induced instability and stabilization by repulsive boson-boson interactions results in a discrete set of metastable many-body bound states at intermediate energies between the attractive and repulsive polaron branches. These states exhibit strong quantum statistical characteristics in the form of non-Gaussian quantum correlations, requiring non-perturbative beyond mean-field treatments for their characterization. Furthermore, these many-body bound states have sizable molecular spectral weights, accessible via molecular spectroscopy techniques. This work provides a unified theory of attractive and repulsive Bose polarons on the repulsive side of the Feshbach resonance.

Abstract:We study a recent experiment [K. Li et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 250401 (2008)] on diffracting a BoseEinstein condensate by two counterpropagating optical fields. Including the local-field effect, we explain the asymmetric momentum distribution and self-imaging of the Bose-Einstein condensate self-consistently. Moreover, we find that the two counterpropagating optical fields could not produce a perfect optical lattice, which is actually deformed by the local-field effect. Our work implies that the local-field effect could be essential for getting a better quantitative analysis of other optical lattice experiments. In particular, the intensity imbalance of the two optical fields could act as a new means to tailor both cold atom dynamics and light propagation.
Bose-Einstein condensation of heteronuclear bound states formed in a Fermi gas of two atomic species: microscopic approach

Abstract:We study a many-body system of interacting fermionic atoms of two species that are in thermodynamic equilibrium with their condensed heteronuclear bound states (molecules). In order to describe such an equilibrium state, we use a microscopic approach that involves the Bogoliubov model for a weakly interacting Bose gas and approximate formulation of the second quantization method in the presence of bound states of particles elaborated earlier by the authors. This microscopic approach is valid at low temperatures, when the average kinetic energy of all the components in the system is small in comparison with the bound state energy. The coupled equations, which relate the chemical potentials of fermionic components and molecular condensate density, are obtained within the proposed theory. At zero temperature, these equations are analyzed both analytically and numerically, attracting the relevant experimental data. We find the conditions at which a condensate of heteronuclear molecules coexists in equilibrium with degenerate components of a Fermi gas. The ground state energy and single-particle excitation spectrum are found. The boundaries of the applicability of the developed microscopic approach are analyzed.

Abstract:Wilson's renormalization-group approach to the weakly-interacting single-component Bose gas is discussed within the symmetry-broken, condensate phase. Extending upon the work by Bijlsma and Stoof [Phys. Rev. A 54, 5085 (1996), see <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevA.54.5085" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> ], wave-function renormalization of the temporal derivative contributions to the effective action is included in order to capture sound-like quasiparticle excitations with wave lengths larger than the healing-length scale. By means of a suitable rescaling scheme we achieve convergence of the coupling flows, which serve as a means to determine the condensate depletion in accordance with Bogoliubov theory, as well as the interaction-induced shift of the critical temperature.

Abstract:We use analytic continuation to extend the gauge/gravity duality nonperturbative description of the strong force coupling into the transition, near-perturbative, regime where perturbative effects become important. By excluding the unphysical region in coupling space from the flow of singularities in the complex plane, we derive a specific relation between the scales relevant at large and short distances; this relation is uniquely fixed by requiring maximal analyticity. The unified effective coupling model gives an accurate description of the data in the nonperturbative and the near-perturbative regions.
