Abstract:AbstractTerahertz photonic single‐pole double‐throw (SPDT) switches, which facilitate on‐chip channel control and signal routing, serve as the key components of future terahertz communication and sensing systems. However, broadband and low‐loss on‐chip photonic SPDT switches still present a formidable challenge due to the restricted capability of manipulating terahertz waves in photonic circuits. Here, a non‐Hermitian loss‐driven solution is proposed for achieving broadband and low‐loss terahertz on‐chip photonic SPDT switches. As proof of concept, an all‐silicon terahertz SPDT switching chip is experimentally demonstrated around the center frequency of 125 GHz with a relative bandwidth of 7.2%. The two paths are driven by external optical pumping and evolve adiabatically around an exceptional point (EP) in the unbroken and broken PT‐symmetric phases. Interestingly, the strong non‐Hermitian loss instead enforces the photonic modes to the low‐loss energy level and thereby keeps the switch working at the low‐loss transmission status. As a result, the minimum optical powers require for the ultrafast terahertz communications are only −2 and 1 dBm. Both channels of the SPDT switch support on‐chip 16‐QAM streams with a 36‐Gbit s−1 data rate. The design as a basic building block is anticipated for a myriad of on‐chip applications, including 6G communications, detection, and sensing.

Abstract:Plasmonics, which deals with the unique optical properties of metallic and semiconductor nanostructure, is one of the most fascinating and fast-moving areas of photonics. Its board scale research in the visible, infrared, terahertz and microwave frequencies has driven by the advances in the micro/nano fabrication and the computational simulation technologies, as well as the potential applications in areas of high sensitivity bio-chemical sensing, sub-wavelength light-guiding, near-field microcopy, and nanolithography. Especially, the development of the artificial metamaterial has laid the good foundation for the material and devices in the terahertz frequency range, which is barely responded by the nature materials, and furthermore, has promoted the progress of terahertz surface plasmonics. In this paper the generation, propagation, new applications, and perspective of terahetz surface plamonics are reviewed and discussed.

Abstract:Plasmons, collective excitations of electrons in solids, are associated with strongly confined electromagnetic fields, with wavelengths far below the wavelength of photons in free space. Such strong confinement nominally holds the potential to enable optoelectronic technologies that bridge the size difference between photonic and electronic devices. However, despite decades of research in plasmonics, many applications remain limited by plasmonic losses, thus motivating a search for new engineered plasmonic materials with lower losses. Among the promising candidates for low-loss plasmonic materials are solid-state lattices with flat and energetically isolated metallic bands—with commensurately small phase spaces for phonon-assisted optical losses, a major contributor to short plasmonic lifetimes. Such electronic band structures may be created by judiciously introducing an ordered lattice of defects in an insulating host material. Here, we explore this approach, presenting several low-loss, highly confined, and tunable plasmonic materials based on arrays of carbon substitutions in hexagonal boron nitride monolayers. From our first-principles calculations based on density functional theory, we find plasmonic structures with midinfrared plasmons featuring very high confinements ( λvacuum/λplasmon exceeding 1400). In addition, we find that one of our materials exhibits a confinement of 700 while avoiding second-order—phonon-assisted—losses entirely (infinite quality factor at this order of perturbation theory). We provide a systematic explanation of how crystal structure, electronic bandwidth, local-field, and many-body effects inform the plasmonic dispersions and losses of these materials. Abstract:Terahertz spectral range (frequencies of 0.1-1 THz) has recently emerged as the next frontier for non-destructive imaging, industrial sensing and ultra-fast wireless communications. Here, we review several classes of materials such as simple metals, semiconductors, high-k dielectrics, polar materials, zero gap materials, as well as structured materials that can support strongly localised electromagnetic modes at material interfaces in the Terahertz spectral range. We present the basic theory of surface waves, detail the requirement of strong modal confinement and low loss for the surface waves propagating at material interfaces and discuss challenges for excitation of such modes at Terahertz frequencies. A large number of examples related to naturally occurring and artificial materials is then presented. A variety of practical applications is envisioned for surface waves at Terahertz frequencies including non-destructive super-resolution imaging and quality control, high sensitivity sensors capable of operation with small volumes of analytes that are opaque in the visible and near-infrared, as well as design of compact optical circuit for the upcoming ultra-high bitrate THz communication devices.

Abstract:We demonstrate thermally tunable superconductor hole array with active control over their resonant transmission induced by surface plasmon polaritons . The array was lithographically fabricated on high temperature YBCO superconductor and characterized by terahertz-time domain spectroscopy. We observe a clear transition from the virtual excitation of the surface plasmon mode to the real surface plasmon mode. The highly tunable superconducting plasmonic hole arrays may have promising applications in the design of low-loss, large dynamic range amplitude modulation, and surface plasmon based terahertz devices.

Abstract:Unlike conventional optics, plasmonics enables unrivalled concentration of optical energy well beyond the diffraction limit of light. However, a significant part of this energy is dissipated as heat. Plasmonic losses present a major hurdle in the development of plasmonic devices and circuits that can compete with other mature technologies. Until recently, they have largely kept the use of plasmonics to a few niche areas where loss is not a key factor, such as surface enhanced Raman scattering and biochemical sensing. Here, we discuss the origin of plasmonic losses and various approaches to either minimize or mitigate them based on understanding of fundamental processes underlying surface plasmon modes excitation and decay. Along with the ongoing effort to find and synthesize better plasmonic materials, optical designs that modify the optical powerflow through plasmonic nanostructures can help in reducing both radiative damping and dissipative losses of surface plasmons. Another strategy relies on the development of hybrid photonic-plasmonic devices by coupling plasmonic nanostructures to resonant optical elements. Hybrid integration not only helps to reduce dissipative losses and radiative damping of surface plasmons, but also makes possible passive radiative cooling of nano-devices. Finally, we review emerging applications of thermoplasmonics that leverage Ohmic losses to achieve new enhanced functionalities. The most successful commercialized example of a loss-enabled novel application of plasmonics is heat-assisted magnetic recording. Other promising technological directions include thermal emission manipulation, cancer therapy, nanofabrication, nano-manipulation, plasmon-enabled material spectroscopy and thermo-catalysis, and solar water treatment.

Lateral plasmonic superlattice in strongly dissipative regime

Abstract:We calculate transmission coefficient, $\mathcal T,$ of terahertz radiation through lateral plasmonic superlattice with a unit cell consisting of two regions with different plasma wave velocities, $s_1$ and $s_2$ ($s_1 > s_2$). We generalize theory developed earlier for resonant case to the non-resonant regime, when the scattering rate, $\gamma,$ is large compared to fundamental gate-tunable frequencies $\omega_{1,2}$ of plasma oscillations in both regions. We find that absorption, and consequently $\mathcal T$, strongly depends on density modulation amplitude and on the frequency of the incoming radiation. We describe evolution of the absorption with increasing of radiation frequency from the quasi-static regime of very low frequency to the high-frequency regime, identify several dissipation regimes and find analytical expression for absorption, and, accordingly, for $\mathcal T,$ in these regimes. A general phase diagram of non-resonant regime in the plane $(\omega,\omega_2)$ for fixed $\omega_1$ is constructed. Most importantly, $\mathcal T$ sharply depends on the gate voltages and frequency. In particular, for $\omega_2 \ll \omega_1,$ $\mathcal T$ strongly varies on the very small frequency scale, $\delta \omega \ll \gamma,$ determined by the Maxwell relaxation, $\delta \omega \sim \omega_1^2/\gamma,$ so that the superlattice shows high responsivity within the frequency band $\delta \omega.$

Abstract:The coupling of light to collective oscillation of electrons on the metal surface allows the creation of surface plasmon-polariton wave. This surface wave is of central interest in the field of plasmonics. In this paper, we will present a brief review of this field, focusing on the plasmonic waveguide and plasmonic transmission. In the plasmonic waveguide, the light can be guided along the metal surface with subwavelength lateral dimensions, enabling the possibility of high-density integration of the optical elements. On the other hand, in the plasmonic transmission, the propagation of light through a metal surface can be tailored with the subwavelength holes, leading to the anomalous transmission behaviors which have received extensive investigations in recent years. In addition, as a supplement to plasmonics in the visible and near-infrared region, the study of THz plasmonics has also been discussed.

Abstract:Unidirectional surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have been proven to truly exist at an interface between a magnetized semiconductor and an opaque isotropic material, however, they suffer rather serious leakage loss (with propagation length shorter than two wavelengths) caused by nonlocality. In this work, we investigate an alternative category of unidirectional SPPs existing on a nonreciprocal plasmonic platform with a cladding composed of a dielectric heterostructure transversely terminated by metal. This unidirectional SPP mode exists for small wavenumbers within the entire upper bulk-mode bandgap of the magnetized semiconductor, hence it is robust against nonlocal effects over a broad band. In contrast to previous unidirectional SPPs, the leakage loss of the present unidirectional SPPs is significantly reduced by more than five times, since the portion of modal energy distributed in the cladding is substantially increased. A similar reduction in absorption losses associated with semiconductor dissipation is observed. Though the nonlocality induces a backward-propagating SPP with extremely large wavenumbers, it can be suppressed even at very small level of dissipation. Therefore, our proposed plasmonic waveguide actually exhibits exceptional unidirectional characteristics.

Abstract:Abstract The excitation of surface-phonon-polariton (SPhP) modes in polar dielectric crystals and the associated new developments in the field of SPhPs are reviewed. The emphasis of this work is on providing an understanding of the general phenomenon, including the origin of the Reststrahlen band, the role that optical phonons in polar dielectric lattices play in supporting sub-diffraction-limited modes and how the relatively long optical phonon lifetimes can lead to the low optical losses observed within these materials. Based on this overview, the achievements attained to date and the potential technological advantages of these materials are discussed for localized modes in nanostructures, propagating modes on surfaces and in waveguides and novel metamaterial designs, with the goal of realizing low-loss nanophotonics and metamaterials in the mid-infrared to terahertz spectral ranges.

Abstract:We theoretically study the properties of terahertz (THz) surface plasmon (SP) propagating on semiconductor and thin dielectric surfaces by employing numerical calculations. The results show that the major energy of THz SP can be confined in the thin film on the surface of an InSb semiconductor. At the same time, the magnetic field dispersion curves and absorption coefficients of the structures are studied. We find that the absorption coefficient is related to the permittivity of the dielectric films. Therefore, we can sensitively detect a thin dielectric sample by broadband terahertz spectroscopy.

Abstract:Nonlinear terahertz (THz) transmission through subwavelength hole array in superconducting niobium nitride (NbN) film is experimentally investigated using intense THz pulses. The good agreement between the measurement and numerical simulations indicates that the field strength dependent transmission mainly arises from the nonlinear properties of the superconducting film. Under weak THz pulses, the transmission peak can be tuned over a frequency range of 145 GHz which is attributed to the high kinetic inductance of 50 nm-thick NbN film. Utilizing the THz pump-THz probe spectroscopy, we study the dynamic process of transmission spectra and demonstrate that the transition time of such superconducting plasmonic device is within 5 ps.

Abstract:Superconductor is a compelling plasmonic medium at terahertz frequencies owing to its intrinsic low Ohmic loss and good tuning property. However, the microscopic physics of the interaction between terahertz wave and superconducting plasmonic structures is still unknown. In this paper, we conducted experiments of the enhanced terahertz transmission through a series of superconducting NbN subwavelength hole arrays and employed microscopic hybrid wave model in theoretical analysis of the role of hybrid waves in the enhanced transmission. The theoretical calculation provided a good match of experimental data. In particular, we obtained the following results. When the width of the holes is far below wavelength, the enhanced transmission is mainly caused by localized resonance around individual holes. On the contrary, when the holes are large, hybrid waves scattered by the array of holes dominate the extraordinary transmission. The surface plasmon polaritions are proved to be launched on the surface of superconducting film and the excitation efficiency increases when the temperature approaches critical temperature and the working frequency goes near energy gap frequency. This work will enrich our knowledge on the microscopic physics of extraordinary optical transmission at terahertz frequencies and contribute to developing terahertz plasmonic devices.

Abstract:Structured plasmonic metamaterial devices offer the design flexibility to be size scaled for operation across the electromagnetic spectrum and are extremely attractive for generating electromagnetically induced transparency and slow-light behaviors via coupling of bright and dark subwavelength resonators. Here, we experimentally demonstrate a thermally active superconductor-metal coupled resonator based hybrid terahertz metamaterial on a sapphire substrate that shows tunable transparency and slow light behavior as the metamaterial chip is cooled below the high-temperature superconducting phase transition temperature. This hybrid metamaterial opens up the avenues for designing micro-sized active circuitry with switching, modulation, and “slowing down terahertz light” capabilities.
Terahertz Large-Area Unidirectional Surface Magnetoplasmon and Its Applications

Abstract:Unidirectional surface waves in nonreciprocal plasmonic platforms with nonlocal effects have been a topic of significant interest and some controversy. In this study, we present a scheme to achieve unidirectional surface magnetoplasmons (USMPs) with large modal areas at terahertz frequencies. Such large-area USMPs (LUSMPs) exist in a metal-UENZ (uniaxial-[Formula: see text]-near-zero)-Si-InSb structure under external magnetic field, where the effect of nonlocality is included. The field of the LUSMP extends almost uniformly in the UENZ layer with a thickness of wavelength scale, thus its modal size can be represented by the UENZ-layer thickness. Due to the modal energy primarily distributed in the thick UENZ layer, the nonlocality-induced leakage of the LUSMP is significantly reduced by an order of magnitude, compared to previous USMP existing at interface between InSb and opaque isotropic medium. Due to their large modal sizes, such LUSMPs can be efficiently excited by terahertz radiations directly from free space. In addition, LUSMPs offer high degree of freedom for manipulating terahertz waves, such as energy squeezing and trapping. Based on LUSMPs, a terahertz free-space isolator is also developed. Our findings have important implications to the development of innovative plasmonic devices in terahertz regime.

Abstract:Solid-state terahertz plasma devices are becoming one of the important research areas in which both solid-state microwave/millimeter-wave electronics and semiconductor laser technologies are being developed and merged towards the terahertz frequency regime. In this review, we introduce the manipulation, excitation and probing of two-dimensional-electron-gas(2DEG) plasmons in AlGaN/GaN heterostructure, and report the recent progresses in the implementation of plasmon physics in terahertz detectors, modulators and emitters. The coupling between the plasmon modes and the terahertz electromagnetic waves in free space are realized by using grating coupler, antenna and terahertz Fabry-Perot cavity which further modulates the terahertz electromagnetic modes and enhances the coupling. The dispersion relationship of gate-controlled plasmon modes are verified in grating-coupled 2DEG. Strong coupling between the plasmon modes and the terahertz cavity modes and hence the formation of plasmon-polariton modes are realized in a grouping-coupled 2DEG embedded in a Fabry-Perot cavity. Based on the same grating-coupled 2DEG, terahertz modulation with high modulation depth and terahertz plasmon emission are observed. In antenna-coupled 2DEG field-effect channel, both resonant and non-resonant excitation of localized plasmon modes are observed by probing the terahertz photocurrent/voltage. A terahertz self-mixing model is developed for antenna-coupled field-effect terahertz detector and provides a guideline for the design and optimization of high-sensitivity terahertz detectors. Our studies indicate that room-temperature, high-speed and high-sensitivity terahertz detectors and the focal-plane arrays can be developed by using the non-resonant plasmon excitation in antenna-coupled field-effect channel. However, the high damping rate of solid-state plasma wave is yet the main hurdle to overcome for plasmon terahertz emitters and modulators both of which rely on the resonant plasmon excitation. The formation of high-quality-factor plasmon cavity including the solid-state plasma physics, manipulation of the boundary conditions of plasmon cavity, utilization of new high-electron-mobility two-dimensional electronic materials and high-quality, small mode-volume terahertz resonant cavity, etc. would be the focus of future research.
Drifting Electrons: Nonreciprocal Plasmonics and Thermal Photonics

Abstract:Light propagates symmetrically in opposite directions in most materials and structures. This fact -- a consequence of the Lorentz reciprocity principle -- has tremendous implications for science and technology across the electromagnetic spectrum. Here, we investigate an emerging approach to break reciprocity that does not rely on magneto-optical effects or spacetime modulations, but is instead based on biasing a plasmonic material with a direct electric current. Using a 3D Green function formalism and microscopic considerations, we elucidate the propagation properties of surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) supported by a generic nonreciprocal platform of this type, revealing some previously overlooked, anomalous, wave-propagation effects. We show that SPPs can propagate in the form of steerable, slow-light, unidirectional beams associated with inflexion points in the modal dispersion. We also clarify the impact of dissipation (due to collisions and Landau damping) on nonreciprocal effects and shed light on the connections between inflexion points, exceptional points at band-edges, and complex modal transitions in leaky-wave structures. We then apply these concepts to the important area of thermal photonics, and provide the first theoretical demonstration of drift-induced nonreciprocal near-field radiative heat transfer between two planar bodies. Our findings may open new opportunities toward the development of nonreciprocal magnet-free devices that combine the benefits of plasmonics and nonreciprocal photonics for wave-guiding and energy applications.

Abstract:Spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on a real metal film with periodic cut-through slits are investigated theoretically at terahertz frequencies. For both symmetric and antisymmetric modes of spoof SPPs on the film, the propagation length is severely limited by the absorbing loss in the metal when the fields are highly confined. By stuffing the slits with dielectric slabs thicker than the film, the propagation length of spoof SPPs is greatly increased under the subwavelength field confinement, especially for the antisymmetric mode. This improvement of the modal behavior is explained physically.
