Abstract:We use the Wigner transformation and asymptotic analysis to systematically derive the semi-classical model for the Schrödinger equation in arbitrary spatial dimensions, with any periodic structure. Our particular emphasis lies in addressing the \textit{diabatic} effect, i.e., the impact of Bloch band crossings. We consider both deterministic and random scenarios. In the former case, we derive a coupled Liouville system, revealing lower-order interactions among different Bloch bands. In the latter case, a coupled system of radiative transport equations emerges, with the scattering cross-section induced by the random inhomogeneities. As a specific application, we deduce the effective dynamics of a wave packet in graphene with randomness.

Abstract:The radiative transport equation in a three-dimensional infinite medium is considered. The coefficients of the radiative transport equation are assumed to be constant. For a pencil beam, we extend the analytical discrete-ordinates method to three dimensions by rotating reference frames. Obtained results are compared to Monte Carlo simulation.

Abstract:In this paper we study the distribution of the temperature within a body where the heat is transported only by radiation. Specifically, we consider the situation where both emission-absorption and scattering processes take place. We study the initial boundary value problem given by the coupling of the radiative transfer equation with the energy balance equation on a convex domain $ \Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^3 $ in the diffusion approximation regime, i.e. when the mean free path of the photons tends to zero. Using the method of matched asymptotic expansions we will derive the limit initial boundary value problems for all different possible scaling limit regimes and we will classify them as equilibrium or non-equilibrium diffusion approximation. Moreover, we will observe the formation of boundary and initial layers for which suitable equations are obtained. We will consider both stationary and time dependent problems as well as different situations in which the light is assumed to propagate either instantaneously or with finite speed.

Abstract:We find that a 2D periodic potential with different modulation amplitudes in x- and y-direction and a perpendicular magnetic field may lead to a transition to electron transport along the direction of stronger modulation and to localization in the direction of weaker modulation. In the experimentally accessible regime we relate this new quantum transport phenomenon to avoided band crossing due to classical chaos.

Abstract:We study the electric Helmholtz equation $\Delta u + Vu + \lambda u =f$ and show that, for certain potentials, the solution $u$ given by the limited absorption principle obeys a Sommerfeld radiation condition. We use a non-spherical approach based on the solution $K$ of the eikonal equation $|\nabla K|^2=1 + \frac{p}{\lambda}$ to improve previous results in that area and extend them to long-range potentials which decay like $|x|^{-2-\alpha}$ at infinity, with $\alpha > 0$.

Abstract:We obtain an explicit formula for the diagonal singularities of the scattering amplitude for the Dirac equation with short-range electromagnetic potentials. Using this expansion we uniquely reconstruct an electric potential and magnetic field from the high-energy limit of the scattering amplitude. Moreover, supposing that the electric potential and magnetic field are asymptotic sums of homogeneous terms we give the unique reconstruction procedure for these asymptotics from the scattering amplitude, known for some energy $E.$ Furthermore, we prove that the set of the averaged scattering solutions to the Dirac equation is dense in the set of all solutions to the Dirac equation that are in $L^{2}\left( \Omega\right) ,$ where $\Omega$ is any connected bounded open set in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$ with smooth boundary, and we show that if we know an electric potential and a magnetic field for $\mathbb{R}^{3}\setminus\Omega$, then the scattering amplitude, given for some energy $E$, uniquely determines these electric potential and magnetic field everywhere in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$. Combining this uniqueness result with the reconstruction procedure for the asymptotics of the electric potential and the magnetic field we show that the scattering amplitude, known for some $E$, uniquely determines a electric potential and a magnetic field, that are asymptotic sums of homogeneous terms, which converges to the electric potential and the magnetic field, respectively. Moreover, we discuss the symmetries of the kernel of the scattering matrix, which follow from the parity, charge-conjugation and time-reversal transformations for the Dirac operator.

Abstract:The radiation condition is the key question in the mathematical modelling for scattering problems in unbounded domains. Mathematically, it plays the role as the "boundary condition" at the infinity, which guarantees the well-posedness of the mathematical problem; physically, it describes the far-field asymptotic behaviour of the physical waves. In this paper, we focus on the radiation conditions for scattering problems above (locally perturbed) periodic surfaces. According to Hu et al. (2021), the radiating solution satisfies the Sommerfeld radiation condition: $$\frac{\partial u}{\partial r}-i k u=o(r^{-1/2}).$$ Although there are literature which have studied this problem, there is no specific method for dealing with periodic structures. Due to this reason, the important properties for the periodic structures may be ignored. Moreover, the existing method is not extendable to bi-periodic structures in three dimensional spaces. In this paper, we study the radiation condition for the time-harmonic scattering problem with periodic surfaces, which is modelled by the Helmholtz equation. We introduce a novel method based on the Floquet-Bloch transform, which, to the best of the author's knowledge, is the first method that works particularly for periodic media. With this method, we improve the Sommerfeld radiation condition for the scattered field from periodic media to: $$\frac{\partial u}{\partial r}-i k u=O(r^{-3/2}).$$ More importantly, the prospect of extending this method to 3D cases is optimistic.

Scattering approach to near-field radiative heat transfer

Abstract:We formulate an effective quantum scattering theory for the problem of near-field radiative heat transfer in linear electric circuits. Built from the same ingredients as the semiclassical fluctuational electrodynamics, the standard tool to handle this problem, our construction enables one to calculate arbitrary correlation functions of the energy current, while the fluctuational electrodynamics can be used only for the average current. We give a general expression for the energy current fluctuations in terms of the circuit's scattering matrix and show that it has an important non-dissipative contribution that can dominate the finite-frequency noise while being absent in the average current.

On the diffusion approximation of the stationary radiative transfer equation with absorption and emission

Abstract:We study the situation in which the distribution of temperature a body is due to its interaction with radiation. We consider the boundary value problem for the stationary radiative transfer equation under the assumption of the local thermodynamic equilibrium. We study the diffusion equilibrium approximation in the absence of scattering. We consider absorption coefficient independent of the frequency $ \nu $ (the so-called Grey approximation) and the limit when the photons' mean free path tends to zero, i.e. the absorption coefficient tends to infinity. We show that the densitive of radiative energy $ u $, which is proportional to the fourth power of the temperature due to the Stefan-Boltzmann law, solves in the limit an elliptic equation where the boundary value can be determined uniquely in terms of the original boundary condition. We derive formally with the method of matched asymptotic expansions the boundary condition for the limit problem and we prove rigorously the convergence to the solution of the limit problem with a careful analysis of some non-local integral operators. The method developed here allows to prove all the results using only maximum principle arguments.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with an inverse random source problem for the one-dimensional stochastic Helmholtz equation, which is to reconstruct the statistical properties of the random source function from boundary measurements of the radiating random electric field. Although the emphasis of the paper is on the inverse problem, we adapt a computationally more efficient approach to study the solution of the direct problem in the context of the scattering model. Specifically, the direct model problem is equivalently formulated into a two-point spatially stochastic boundary value problem, for which the existence and uniqueness of the pathwise solution is proved. In particular, an explicit formula is deduced for the solution from an integral representation by solving the two-point boundary value problem. Based on this formula, a novel and efficient strategy, which is entirely done by using the fast Fourier transform, is proposed to reconstruct the mean and the variance of the random source function from measurements at one boundary point, where the measurements are assumed to be available for many realizations of the source term. Numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:We study the radiative heat transfer between two semi-infinite half-spaces, bounded by conductive surfaces in contact with vacuum. This setup is interpreted as a four-terminal mesoscopic transport problem. The slabs and interfaces are viewed as bosonic reservoirs, coupled perfectly to a scattering center consisting of the two interfaces and vacuum. Using Rytov's fluctuational electrodynamics and assuming Kirchhoff's circuital law, we calculate the heat flow in each bath. This allows for explicit evaluation of a conductance matrix, from which one readily verifies Büttiker symmetry. Thus, radiative heat transfer in layered media with conductive interfaces becomes a Landauer-Büttiker transport problem.

Weak localization in radiative transfer of acoustic waves in a randomly-fluctuating slab

Abstract:This paper concerns the derivation of radiative transfer equations for acoustic waves propagating in a randomly fluctuating slab (between two parallel planes) in the weak-scattering regime, and the study of boundary effects through an asymptotic analysis of the Wigner transform of the wave solution. These radiative transfer equations allow to model the transport of wave energy density, taking into account the scattering by random heterogeneities. The approach builds on the method of images, where the slab is extended to a full-space, with a periodic map of mechanical properties and a series of sources located along a periodic pattern. Two types of boundary effects, both on the (small) scale of the wavelength, are observed: one at the boundaries of the slab, and one inside the domain. The former impact the entire energy density (coherent as well as incoherent) and is also observed in half-spaces. The latter, more specific to slabs, corresponds to the constructive interference of waves that have reflected at least twice on the boundaries of the slab and only impacts the coherent part of the energy density.

Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger equation in high dimensional critical electromagnetic fields

Abstract:We prove Strichartz estimates for the Schrödinger equation with scaling-critical electromagnetic potentials in dimensions $n\geq3$. The decay assumption on the magnetic potentials is critical, including the case of the Coulomb potential. Our approach introduces novel techniques, notably the construction of Schwartz kernels for the localized Schrödinger propagator, which separates the antipodal points of $\mathbb{S}^{n-1}$, in these scaling critical electromagnetic fields. This method enables us to prove the $L^1(\mathbb{R}^n)\to L^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n)$ for the localized Schrödinger propagator, as well as global Strichartz estimates. Our results provide a positive answer to the open problem posed in <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0901.4024" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0901.4024">arXiv:0901.4024</a> <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1611.04805" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1611.04805">arXiv:1611.04805</a> <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0806.0778" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0806.0778">arXiv:0806.0778</a>, and fill a longstanding gap left by arXiv:<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="0705.0546" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/0705.0546">arXiv:0705.0546</a> arXiv:archive/0608699.

Abstract:We study the L 1 → L ∞ -decay estimates for the Klein-Gordon equation in the Aharonov-Bohm magnetic fields, and further prove Strichartz estimates for the Klein-Gordon equation with critical electromagnetic potentials. The novel ingredients are the Schwartz kernels of the spectral measure and heat propagator of the Schrödinger operator in Aharonov-Bohm magnetic fields. In particular, we explicitly construct the representation of the spectral measure and resolvent of the Schrödinger operator with Aharonov-Bohm potentials, and prove that the heat kernel in critical electromagnetic fields satisfies Gaussian boundedness. In future papers, this result on the spectral measure will be used to (i) study the uniform resolvent estimates, and (ii) prove the L p -regularity property of wave propagation in the same setting.

Here, we derive the space-independent von Neumann equation for electron spin mathematically from the classical Bloch or Majorana--Bloch equation, which is also derived. Subsequently, the space-independent Schrödinger--Pauli equation is derived in both the quantum mechanical and recently developed co-quantum dynamic frameworks.

Asymptotics of the radiation field for the massless Dirac-Coulomb system

Abstract:We consider the long-time behavior of the massless Dirac equation coupled to a Coulomb potential. For nice enough initial data, we find a joint asymptotic expansion for solutions near the null and future infinities and characterize explicitly the decay rates seen in the expansion. This paper can be viewed as a successor to previous work on asymptotic expansions for the radiation field. The key new elements are propagation estimates near the singularity of the potential, building on work of the first author with Wunsch and an explicit calculation with hypergeometric functions to determine the rates of decay.

Abstract:By using the iterative method in functional analysis, the Poisson-Boltzmann (PB) equation, which describes the distribution of the potential in the electrical double layer of a cylindrical particle, has been solved analytically under general potential conditions. Both the potential and the surface charge density coincide with those results obtained from the Debye-Huchel approximation when the very low potential of ze psi << kT is introduced. The advantage of this method is that it has completely overcome the restriction that the BP equation can be solved analytically only under the Debye-Huchel approximation condition.

Abstract:The well-known Rutherford differential cross section, denoted by d Omega/d sigma, corresponds to a two body interaction with Coulomb potential. This leads to the logarithmic divergence of the momentum transfer (or the transport cross section), which is described by integral(S2) (1 - cos 0) d Omega/d sigma d sigma similar to integral(pi)(0) 0(-1) d0. Here 0 is the deviation angle in the scattering event. Due to a screening effect, physically one can assume that theta(min) is the order of magnitude of the smallest angles for which the scattering can still be regarded as Coulomb scattering. Under ad hoc cutoff theta >= theta(min) on the deviation angle, L. D. Landau derived a new equation in [17] for the weakly interacting gas which is now referred to as the Fokker-Planck-Landau or Landau equation. In the present work, we establish a unified framework to justify Landau's formal derivation in [17] and the so-called Landau approximation problem proposed in [5] in the close-to-equilibrium regime. Precisely, (i) we prove global well-posedness of the Boltzmann equation with cutoff Rutherford cross section which is perhaps the most singular kernel both in relative velocity and deviation angle; (ii) we prove a global-in-time error estimate between solutions to the Boltzmann and Landau equations with logarithm accuracy, which is consistent with the famous Coulomb logarithm. Key ingredients in the proofs of these results include a complete coercivity estimate of the linearized Boltzmann collision operator, a uniform spectral gap estimate and a novel linear-quasilinear energy method.

Abstract:Based on the nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium state and large optical thickness of plasma, we establish one-dimensional nonequilibrium radiation-transport equation from diffusion approximation. Through finite volume method, the discrete scheme of radiation-transport equation and the conditions for its definite solution are proposed. The reliability of radiation-transport equation and its discrete scheme is validated.
