Abstract:We show how to force, with finite conditions, the forcing axiom PFA(T), a relativization of PFA to proper forcing notions preserving a given Souslin tree T. The proof uses a Neeman style iteration with generalized side conditions consisting of models of two types, and a preservation theorem for such iterations. The consistency of this axiom was previously known by the standard countable support iteration, using a preservation theorem due to Miyamoto.

Abstract:This paper explores the consistency strength of The Proper Forcing Axiom (PFA) and the theory (T) which involves a variation of the Viale–Weiβ guessing hull principle. We show that (T) is consistent relative to a supercompact cardinal. The main result of the paper is Theorem 0.2, which implies that the theory “ADR + ⊝ is regular” is consistent relative to (T) and to PFA. This improves significantly the previous known best lower-bound for consistency strength for (T) and PFA, which is roughly “ADR + DC”.

Abstract:Suppose that <math>T⁎</math> is an <math>ω1</math>-Aronszajn tree with no stationary antichain. We introduce a forcing axiom PFA(<math>T⁎</math>) for proper forcings which preserve these properties of <math>T⁎</math>. We prove that PFA(<math>T⁎</math>) implies many of the strong consequences of PFA, such as the failure of very weak club guessing, that all of the cardinal characteristics of the continuum are greater than <math>ω1</math>, and the P-ideal dichotomy. On the other hand, PFA(<math>T⁎</math>) implies some of the consequences of diamond principles, such as the existence of Knaster forcings which are not stationarily Knaster.

Abstract:Since being isolated by Viale and Weiss in 2009, the Guessing Model Property has emerged as a particularly prominent and powerful consequence of the Proper Forcing Axiom. In this paper, we investigate connections between variations of the Guessing Model Property and cardinal arithmetic, broadly construed. We improve upon results of Viale and Krueger by proving that a weakening of the Guessing Model Property implies Shelah's Strong Hypothesis. We also prove that, though the Guessing Model Property is known not to put an upper bound on the size of the continuum, it does imply that $2^{\omega_1}$ is as small as possible relative to the value of $2^\omega$. Building on work of Laver, we prove that, in the extension of any model of $\mathsf{PFA}$ by a measure algebra, every tree of height and size $\omega_1$ is B-special (a generalization of specialness introduced by Baumgartner that can also hold of trees with uncountable branches). Finally, we investigate the impact of forcing axioms for Suslin and almost Suslin trees on guessing model properties. In particular, we prove thatif $S$ is a Suslin tree, then the axioms $\mathsf{PFA}(S)$ and $\mathsf{PFA}(S)[S]$ imply the Guessing Model Property and the Indestructible Guessing Model Property, respectively, and, if $T^*$ is an almost Suslin Aronszajn tree, then the axiom $\mathsf{PFA}(T^*)$ implies the Indestructible Guessing Model Property. This answers a number of questions of Cox and Krueger.

Abstract:We show it is consistent that there is a Souslin tree $S$ such that after forcing with $S$, $S$ is Kurepa and for all clubs $C \subset \omega_1$, $S\upharpoonright C$ is rigid. This answers Fuchs's questions in Club degrees of rigidity and almost Kurepa trees. Moreover, we show it is consistent with $\diamondsuit$ that for every Souslin tree there is a dense $X \subset S$ which does not have a copy of $S$. This is related to a question due to Baumgartner.

Forcing Over a Free Suslin Tree

Abstract:We introduce an abstract framework for forcing over a free Suslin tree with suborders of products of forcings which add some structure to the tree using countable approximations. The main ideas of this framework are consistency, separation, and the Key Property. We give three applications of this framework: specializing derived trees of a free Suslin tree, adding uncountable almost disjoint subtrees of a free Suslin tree, and adding almost disjoint automorphisms of a free Suslin tree. Using the automorphism forcing, we construct a model in which there is an almost Kurepa Suslin tree and a non-saturated Aronszajn tree, and there does not exist a Kurepa tree. This model solves open problems due to Bilaniuk, Moore, and Jin and Shelah.

Abstract:We define forcing orders which add witnesses to the failure of various forms of Friedman's Property. These posets behave similarly to the forcing order adding a nonreflecting stationary set but have the advantage of allowing the construction of master conditions and thus the preservation of various large cardinal properties. We apply these new techniques to separate various instances of variants of Friedman's Problem, both between different instances at one cardinal as well as equal instances at different cardinals and en passant obtain some new results regarding the differences between ${<}\,\kappa$- and $\kappa$-strategic closure.

Abstract:In recent work, the second author extended combinatorial principles due to Jech and Magidor that characterize certain large cardinal properties so that they can also hold true for small cardinals. For inaccessible cardinals, these modifications have no effect, and the resulting principles still give the same characterization of large cardinals. We prove that the proper forcing axiom PFA implies these principles hold for ω2. Using this, we argue to show that any of the known methods for forcing models of PFA from a large cardinal assumption requires a strongly compact cardinal. If one forces PFA using a proper forcing, then we get the optimal result that a supercompact cardinal is necessary.

Abstract:We investigate some versions of amoeba for tree-forcings in the generalized Cantor and Baire spaces. This answers [10, Question 3.20] and generalizes a line of research that in the standard case has been studied in [11], [13], and [7]. Moreover, we also answer questions posed in [3] by Friedman, Khomskii, and Kulikov, about the relationships between regularity properties at uncountable cardinals. We show $\Sigma_1^1$-counterexamples to some regularity properties related to trees without club splitting. In particular we prove a strong relationship between the Ramsey and the Baire properties, in slight contrast with the standard case.
Some Results on Finitely Splitting Subtrees of Aronszajn Trees

Abstract:For any $2 \le n < \omega$, we introduce a forcing poset using generalized promises which adds a normal $n$-splitting subtree to a $(\ge \! n)$-splitting normal Aronszajn tree. Using this forcing poset, we prove several consistency results concerning finitely splitting subtrees of Aronszajn trees. For example, it is consistent that there exists an infinitely splitting Suslin tree whose topological square is not Lindelöf, which solves an open problem due to Marun. For any $2 < n < \omega$, it is consistent that every $(\ge \! n)$-splitting normal Aronszajn tree contains a normal $n$-splitting subtree, but there exists a normal infinitely splitting Aronszajn tree which contains no $(< \! n)$-splitting subtree. To show the latter consistency result, we prove a forcing iteration preservation theorem related to not adding new small-splitting subtrees of Aronszajn trees.

Abstract:Under $\text{CH}$ we construct a partition of Baire space into compact sets, which is indestructible by countably supported iteration and product of Sacks forcing of any length, answering a question of Newelski. Further, we present an in-depth isomorphism-of-names argument for $\text{spec}(\mathfrak{a}_\text{T}) = \{\aleph_1, \mathfrak{c}\}$ in the product-Sacks model. Finally, we prove that Shelah's ultrapower model for the consistency of $\mathfrak{d} < \mathfrak{a}$ also satisfies $\mathfrak{a} = \mathfrak{a}_\text{T}$. Thus, consistently $\aleph_1 < \mathfrak{d} < \mathfrak{a} = \mathfrak{a}_\text{T}$ holds relative to a measurable.

On Steiner Trees of the Regular Simplex

Abstract:In the Euclidean Steiner Tree problem, we are given as input a set of points (called terminals) in the $\ell_2$-metric space and the goal is to find the minimum-cost tree connecting them. Additional points (called Steiner points) from the space can be introduced as nodes in the solution. The seminal works of Arora [JACM'98] and Mitchell [SICOMP'99] provide a Polynomial Time Approximation Scheme (PTAS) for solving the Euclidean Steiner Tree problem in fixed dimensions. However, the problem remains poorly understood in higher dimensions (such as when the dimension is logarithmic in the number of terminals) and ruling out a PTAS for the problem in high dimensions is a notoriously long standing open problem (for example, see Trevisan [SICOMP'00]). Moreover, the explicit construction of optimal Steiner trees remains unknown for almost all well-studied high-dimensional point configurations. Furthermore, a vast majority the state-of-the-art structural results on (high-dimensional) Euclidean Steiner trees were established in the 1960s, with no noteworthy update in over half a century. In this paper, we revisit high-dimensional Euclidean Steiner trees, proving new structural results. We also establish a link between the computational hardness of the Euclidean Steiner Tree problem and understanding the optimal Steiner trees of regular simplices (and simplicial complexes), proposing several conjectures and showing that some of them suffice to resolve the status of the inapproximability of the Euclidean Steiner Tree problem. Motivated by this connection, we investigate optimal Steiner trees of regular simplices, proving new structural properties of their optimal Steiner trees, revisiting an old conjecture of Smith [Algorithmica'92] about their optimal topology, and providing the first explicit, general construction of candidate optimal Steiner trees for that topology.
