Abstract:Solving the Schrödinger equation directly, we study the characteristics of tunnel current on a quantum wedge. We obtain theoretical curves for the tunnel current which agree with experiment results better than those obtained using the penetration coefficient formula with an arbitrary potential.

Abstract:The assisted tunneling of a wave packet between square one dimensional barriers is treated analytically. The tunneling rate is calculated exactly for a potential mimicking a constant electric field with arbitrary time dependence. The pole spectrum of the barriers determines the decay time. The tunneling probability is enhanced by the perturbation. The results are exemplified for a simplified model of nuclear $\ds \alpha$ decay.

Abstract:We employ the tight-binding propagation method to study Klein tunneling and quantum interference in large graphene systems. With this efficient numerical scheme, we model the propagation of a wave packet through a potential barrier and determine the tunneling probability for different incidence angles. We consider both sharp and smooth potential barriers in n-p-n and n-n' junctions and find good agreement with analytical and semiclassical predictions. When we go outside the Dirac regime, we observe that sharp n-p junctions no longer show Klein tunneling because of intervalley scattering. However, this effect can be suppressed by considering a smooth potential. Klein tunneling holds for potentials changing on the scale much larger than the interatomic distance. When the energies of both the electrons and holes are above the Van Hove singularity, we observe total reflection for both sharp and smooth potential barriers. Furthermore, we consider caustic formation by a two-dimensional Gaussian potential. For sufficiently broad potentials we find a good agreement between the simulated wave density and the classical electron trajectories.

Abstract:Tunneling, transport of particles through classically forbidden regions, is a pure quantum phenomenon. It governs numerous phenomena ranging from single-molecule electronics to donor-acceptor transition reactions. The main problem is the absence of a universal method to compute tunneling time. This problem has been attacked in various ways in the literature. Here, in the present work, we show that a statistical approach to the problem, motivated by the imaginary nature of time in the forbidden regions, lead to a novel tunneling time formula which is real and subluminal (in contrast to various known time definitions implying superluminal tunneling). This entropic tunneling time, as we call it, shows good agreement with the tunneling time measurements in laser-driven He ionization. Moreover, it sets an accurate range for long-range electron transfer reactions. The entropic tunneling time is general enough to extend to the photon and phonon tunneling phenomena.

Abstract:Accurate calculation of the tunneling currents in a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is needed for developing image processing algorithms that convert raw data of the STM into surface topographic images. In this paper, an accurate calculation of the tunneling current for several tip–sample distances, bias voltages, and tips of a hyperboloidal shape with several radii of curvature is carried out. The main features of this calculation are the following. Non-WKB exact solutions to the trapezoidal (linear) potential in the barrier region are used to calculate the tunneling probabilities. Pauli blocking effects on both forward and reverse current densities are introduced. Finite temperature (viz. 300K ) calculation in which electrons belonging to a narrow band of energy about the Fermi level contribute to tunneling is carried out. Integration over a field line method is used to obtain tunneling currents for the nonplanar hyperboloidal shaped tips, using the expressions obtained in the paper, for planar model current densities. An estimate of the lateral resolution is introduced. Earlier works do not consider all these aspects together in a single calculation. Tunneling currents are found to increase rapidly with increasing bias voltage and decrease exponentially with increasing tip–sample distances. Airy function determined currents are a more accurate function of a tip–sample distance than the WKB determined currents. Pauli effects are found to not always reduce currents from their non-Pauli values. The lateral resolution is found to be degraded for blunter tips, larger bias voltages, and larger tip–sample distances.

Abstract:We generalize the string method, originally designed for the study of thermally activated rare events, to the calculation of quantum tunneling rates. This generalization is based on the formal analogy between quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics in the path-integral formalism. The quantum string method first locates the minimal action path (MAP), which is a smooth curve connecting two minima of the imaginary-time action in the space of imaginary-time trajectories. From the MAP, the saddle point of the action (called “the bounce”) associated with the exponential factor for barrier tunneling probability is obtained and the pre-exponential factor (the ratio of determinants) for the tunneling rate evaluated using stochastic simulation. The quantum string method is implemented to calculate the bounce and rate of tunneling for the Mueller potential in two dimensions. The quantum problem is much more difficult than the thermally activated barrier crossing problem for the same potential. The model calculations show the string method to be an efficient numerical tool for the study of barrier tunneling in higher dimension, from the determination of the saddle point to the computation of the pre-exponential factor.

Abstract:A nonequilibrium Green's-function formalism is employed to study the time-dependent transport through resonant-tunneling structures. With this formalism, we derive a time-dependent Landauer-Buttiker formula that guarantees current conservation and gauge invariance. Furthermore, we apply the formula to calculate the response behaviors of the resonant-tunneling structures in the presence of rectangular-pulse and harmonic-modulation fields. The results show that the displacement current plays the role of retarding the tunneling current.

Abstract:We propose a method for the approximate computation of the Green function of a scalar massless field subjected to potential barriers of given size and shape in spacetime. The potential of the barriers has the form V(phi)=xi(phi^2-phi_0^2)^2; xi is very large and phi_0 very close to zero, the product (xi phi_0^2) being finite and small. This is equivalent to the insertion of a suitable constraint in the functional integral for phi. The Green function contains a double Fourier transform of the characteristic function of the region where the potential has support.

Abstract:We formulate a procedure to obtain a gauge-invariant tunneling rate at zero temperature using the recently developed tunneling potential approach. This procedure relies on a consistent power counting in gauge coupling and a derivative expansion. The tunneling potential approach, while numerically more efficient than the standard bounce solution method, inherits the gauge-dependence of the latter when naively implemented. Using the Abelian Higgs model, we show how to obtain a tunneling rate whose residual gauge-dependence arises solely from the polynomial approximations adopted in the tunneling potential computation.

Abstract:We propose a method for the approximate computation of the Green function of a scalar massless field φ subjected to potential barriers of given size and shape in space–time. This technique is applied to the case of a 3D Gaussian ellipsoidlike barrier, placed on the axis between two pointlike sources of the field. Instead of the Green function we compute its temporal integral, that gives the static potential energy of the interaction of the two sources. Such interaction takes place in part by tunneling of the quanta of φ across the barrier. We evaluate numerically the correction to the potential in dependence on the barrier size and on the barrier-sources distance.

Abstract:Currently there is no general theory of quantum tunnelling of a particle through a potential barrier which is compatible with QFT. We present a complete calculation of tunnelling amplitudes for a scalar field for some simple potentials using quantum field-theoretic methods. Using the perturbative S-matrix formalism, starting with the Klein-Gordon Lagrangian, we show that an infinite summation of Feynman diagrams can recover tunnelling amplitudes consistent with relativistic quantum mechanics. While this work does not include many-particle effects arising from a fully quantised QFT, it is necessary to investigate QFT corrections to tunnelling amplitudes.

Abstract:Quantum mechanics serves as the fundamental cornerstone for numerous areas of research. Finding simple and analytical quantum transmission coefficients for potentials is a rare occurrence. Notably, we have discovered a readily provable yet unreported symmetry tunneling law. For an infinite parabolic potential, it can be proved analytically that the sum of the one-dimensional tunneling probabilities at incident energies equal to the barrier height plus or minus any energy deviation is consistently 1. Based on this relationship, the original WKB approximation and the Kemble's formula can be generalized to the above-barrier energy region in a simplified but more accurate manner, referred to as the symmetric WKB approach in this context. For the realistic potential between two nuclei, numerical results demonstrate that the symmetry relationship at the above-barrier energy region and the sub-barrier energy is also well satisfied, as well as in the cases of the multichannel WKB method. The symmetry tunneling law has been effectively extended to the Eckart potential as well. Such symmetry in tunneling may have universal characteristics but its underlying reason remains to be uncovered, which may help us to further understand the quantum mechanisms. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevC.109.064602 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:We use the method of Laplace transformation to determine the dynamics of a wavepacket that passes a barrier by tunneling. We investigate the transmitted wavepacket and find that it can be resolved into a sequence of subsequent wave packages. This result sheds new light on the Hartman effect for the tunneling time and gives a possible explanation for an experimental result obtained by Spielmann et al.

Abstract:This paper describes an efficient numerical approach for the calculation of the per-unit length earth-return impedance of a conductor inside a tunnel. The influence of the tunnel on the per-unit length impedance is replaced by a set of equivalent current sources via the fictitious medium method. The main advantage of the proposed approach is that it can solve the boundary value problem within the tunnel region. The proposed method can reduce the calculation region and, thus, leads to time savings. A comparison of the numerical results with published data shows very good agreement. The proposed method is a good candidate for impedance calculation of a conductor inside a tunnel.

Abstract:We study the tunneling problem from general Smith-Volterra-Cantor (SVC) potential of finite length $L$ characterized by the scaling parameter $\rho$ and stage $G$. We show that the SVC($\rho$) potential of stage $G$ is the special case of super periodic potential (SPP) of order $G$. By using SPP formalism developed by us earlier, we provide the close form expression of tunneling probability $T_{G}(k)$ with the help of $q$-Pochhammer symbol. The profile of $T_{G}(k)$ with wave vector $k$ is found to saturate with increasing stage $G$. Very sharp transmission resonances are found to occur from this system which may find applications in the design of sharp transmission filters.

The Unreasonable Effectiveness of the Tunneling Potential

Abstract:The Tunneling Potential Formalism was introduced to calculate the tunneling actions that control vacuum decay as an alternative to the standard Euclidean Formalism. The new approach sets the problem as a simple variational problem in field space with decay described by a tunneling potential function $V_t$ that extremizes a simple action functional $S[V_t]$ and has a number of appealing properties that have been presented elsewhere. In this note I discuss several instances in which this $V_t$ approach seems to give more than one would have expected a priori, as the following: the $V_t$ describing the decay is a minimum of the new action $S[V_t]$ rather than a saddle point; the decay of AdS, dS or Minkowski vacua are governed by a unique universal $S[V_t]$ which also gives the Hawking-Moss instanton in the appropriate limit; physically relevant solutions beyond the Coleman-De Luccia (CdL) bounce, like pseudo-bounces or bubbles of nothing (BoNs), show up in a straightforward way as generalizations of the CdL bounce, with the correct boundary conditions; in cases for which the Euclidean action calculation requires the inclusion of particular boundary terms (like for BoNs or for the decay of AdS maxima above the Breitenlohner-Freedman bound) $S[V_t]$ gives the correct result without the need of including any boundary term.

Abstract:In this paper we study the tunneling using a background independent (polymer) quantization scheme. We show that at low energies, for the tunneling through a single potential barrier, the polymer transmission coefficient and the polymer tunneling time converge to its quantum-mechanical counterparts in a clear fashion. As the energy approaches the maximum these polymer quantities abruptly decrease to zero. We use the transfer matrix method to study the tunneling through a series of identical potential barriers. We obtain that the transmission coefficients (polymer and quantum-mechanical) behave qualitatively in a similar manner, as expected. Finally we show that the polymer tunneling time exhibits anomalous peaks compared with the standard result. Numerical results are also presented.

A General Scenario of Tunneling Time in Different Energy Regimes

Abstract:We theoretically study the tunneling time by investigating a wave packet of Bose-condensed atoms passing through a square barrier. We find that the tunneling time exhibits different scaling laws in different energy regimes. For negative incident energy of the wave packet, counterintuitively, the tunneling time decreases very rapidly with decreasing incident velocity. In contrast, for positive incident energy smaller than the barrier height, the tunneling time increases slowly and then reaches a maximum, which is in agreement with the Larmor clock experiments. The effect of the barrier width related to the uncertainty principle on the maximum tunneling time is also addressed. Our work provides a general scenario of tunneling time that can be used to understand and explain the controversy over tunneling time.

Calculations of widths in the problem of decay by proton emission

Abstract:We develop a new fully quantum method for determination of widths for nuclear decay by proton emission where multiple internal reflections of wave packet describing tunneling process inside proton--nucleus radial barrier are taken into account. Exact solutions for amplitudes of wave function, penetrability $T$ and reflection $R$ are found for $n$-step barrier (at arbitrary $n$) which approximates the realistic barrier. In contrast to semiclassical approach and two-potential approach, we establish by this method essential dependence of the penetrability on the starting point $R_{\rm form}$ in the internal well where proton starts to move outside (for example, for $^{157}_{73}{\rm Ta}$ the penetrability is changed up to 200 times; accuracy is $|T+R-1| < 1.5 \cdot 10^{-15}$). We impose a new condition: in the beginning of the proton decay the proton starts to move outside from minimum of the well. Such a condition provides minimal calculated half-life and gives stable basis for predictions. However, the half-lives calculated by such an approach turn out to be a little closer to experimental data in comparison with the semiclassical half-lives. Estimated influence of the external barrier region is up to 1.5 times for changed penetrability.
