Abstract:We extend the notion of the nerve of a category for a small class of crossed simplicial groups, explicitly describing them using generators and relations. We do this by first considering a generalised bar construction of a group before looking at twisted versions of some of these nerves. As an application we show how we can use the twisted nerves to give equivariant versions of certain derived stacks.

Abstract:This is an overview of the idea of a crossed module. For a group, the triple that consists of the group, its group of automorphisms, and the canonical homomorphism from the group to its group of automorphisms constitutes a crossed module. Crossed modules arise from the identities among the relations of the presentation of a group, from the extension problem for groups and, more generally, in low dimensional topology. Also, the (successful) attempt to extend the idea of a normal extension of commutative fields to the realm of non-commutative algebras leads to crossed modules. Crossed modules appear implicitly in a forgotten paper by A. Turing which in principle settles the extension problem for groups. Crossed modules make perfect sense for Lie algebras.

Nerves of 2-categories and 2-categorification of $(\infty,2)$-categories

Abstract:We show that the homotopy theory of strict 2-categories embeds in that of $(\infty,2)$-categories in the form of 2-precomplicial sets. More precisely, we construct a nerve-categorification adjunction that is a Quillen pair between Lack's model structure for 2-categories and Riehl-Verity's model structure for 2-complicial sets. Furthermore, we show that Lack's model structure is transferred along this nerve and that the nerve is homotopically fully faithful.

Abstract:For most models of $(\infty,2)$-categories an embedding of the $\infty$-category of 2-categories into that of $(\infty,2)$-categories has been constructed in the form of a nerve construction of some flavor. We prove that all those nerve embeddings induce equivalent functors, modulo change of model. We also show that all the nerve embeddings realize the $\infty$-category of 2-categories as the sub-$\infty$-category of $(\infty,2)$-categories that are local with respect to a certain class of maps.

Abstract:We describe a category of undirected graphs which comes equipped with a faithful functor into the category of (colored) modular operads. The associated singular functor from modular operads to presheaves is fully faithful, and its essential image can be classified by a Segal condition. This theorem can be used to recover a related statement, due to André Joyal and Joachim Kock, concerning a larger category of undirected graphs whose functor to modular operads is not just faithful but also full.

Abstract:Following the idea of a group with action in a higher dimension, we consider crossed modules with a given crossed-module action upon themselves. A category of these objects XMod * is given by replacing the set of morphisms in the category Gr * of groups with action by the set of φ-crossed homomorphisms of a modified form. Moreover, the connections of XMod * with some other known categories, such as Gr * and XMod , are given by describing some related functors.

Nerves of enriched categories via necklaces

Abstract:We introduce necklicial nerve functors from enriched categories to simplicial sets, which include Cordier's homotopy coherent, Lurie's differential graded and Le Grignou's cubical nerves. It is shown that every necklicial nerve can be lifted to the templicial objects of <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2302.02484v2" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2302.02484v2">arXiv:2302.02484v2</a>. Building on the work of Dugger and Spivak, we give sufficient conditions under which the left-adjoint of a necklicial nerve can be described more explicitly. As an application, we obtain novel and simple expressions for the left-adjoints of the dg-nerve and cubical nerve.

A double $(\infty,1)$-categorical nerve for double categories

Abstract:We construct a nerve from double categories into double $(\infty,1)$-categories and show that it gives a right Quillen and homotopically fully faithful functor between the model structure for weakly horizontally invariant double categories and the model structure on bisimplicial spaces for double $(\infty,1)$-categories seen as double Segal objects in spaces complete in the horizontal direction. We then restrict the nerve along a homotopical horizontal embedding of 2-categories into double categories, and show that it gives a right Quillen and homotopically fully faithful functor between Lack's model structure for 2-categories and the model structure for 2-fold complete Segal spaces. We further show that Lack's model structure is right-induced along this nerve from the model structure for 2-fold complete Segal spaces.

Variations on the nerve theorem

Abstract:Given a locally finite cover of a simplicial complex by subcomplexes, Björner's version of the Nerve Theorem provides conditions under which the homotopy groups of the nerve agree with those of the original complex through a range of dimensions. We extend this result to covers of CW complexes by subcomplexes and to open covers of arbitrary topological spaces, without local finiteness restrictions. Moreover, we show that under somewhat weaker hypotheses, the same conclusion holds when one utilizes the completed nerve introduced by Fernández-Minian. Additionally, we prove homological versions of these results, extending work of Mirzaii and van der Kallen in the simplicial setting. Our main tool is the Čech complex associated to a cover, as analyzed in work of Dugger and Isaksen. As applications, we prove a generalized crosscut theorem for posets and some variations on Quillen's Poset Fiber Theorem.

Abstract:We describe a category of Feynman graphs and show how it relates to compact symmetric multicategories (coloured modular operads) just as linear orders relate to categories and rooted trees relate to multicategories. More specifically we obtain the following nerve theorem: compact symmetric multicategories can be characterised as presheaves on the category of Feynman graphs subject to a Segal condition. This text is a write-up of the second-named author's QPL6 talk; a more detailed account of this material will appear elsewhere.

Abstract:We show that the construction due to Leinster and Weber of a generalized Lawvere theory for a familially representable monad on a (co)presheaf category, and the associated ``nerve'' functor from monad algebras to (co)presheaves, have an elegant categorical description in the double category $\mathbb{C}\mathbf{at}^{\#}$ of categories, cofunctors, familial functors, and transformations. In $\mathbb{C}\mathbf{at}^{\#}$, which also arises from comonoids in the category of polynomial functors, both a familial monad and a (co)presheaf it acts on can be modeled as horizontal morphisms; from this perspective, the theory category associated to the monad is built using left Kan extension in the category of endomorphisms, and the nerve functor is modeled by a single composition of horizontal morphisms in $\mathbb{C}\mathbf{at}^{\#}$. For the free category monad $path$ on graphs, this provides a new construction of the simplex category as $\Delta := \lens{path}{path \circ path}$. We also explore the free Eilenberg-Moore completion of $\mathbb{C}\mathbf{at}^{\#}$, in which constructions such as the free symmetric monoidal category monad on $\mathbf{Cat}$ can modeled using the rich language of polynomial functors.

Abstract:We prove that crossed modules (or Yetter-Drinfel’d modules) are special cases of Doi’s unified Hopf modules. The category of crossed H -modules is therefore a Grothendieck category (if we work over a field), and the Drinfel’d double appears as a type of generalized smash product.

Abstract:We prove a certain proposition which states a relationship between coverings of small categories and nerves. As its application, we prove that for a covering $\map{P}{E}{B}$ of finite categories, the zeta function of $E$ is the zeta function of $B$ to the number of sheet of $P$. Moreover, we prove the formula $\chi(E)=\chi(F)\chi(B)$ for Euler characteristic of categories and coverings.

On internal categories and crossed objects in the category of monoids

Abstract:It is a well-known fact that the category $\mathsf{Cat}(\mathbf{C})$ of internal categories in a category $\mathbf{C}$ has a description in terms of crossed modules, when $\mathbf{C}=\mathbf{Gr}$ is the category of groups. The proof of this result heavily uses the fact that any split epimorphism decomposes as a semi-direct product. An equivalent statement does not hold in the category $\mathbf{Mon}$ of monoids. In a previous work on quadratic algebras, I constructed an internal category in the category of monoids, see Section 6. Based on this construction, this paper will introduce the notion of a crossed semi-bimodule and show that it gives rise to an object in $\mathsf{Cat}(\mathbf{Mon})$. I will also relate this new notion to the crossed semi-modules introduced earlier by A. Patchkoria.

A Unified View on the Functorial Nerve Theorem and its Variations

Abstract:The nerve theorem is a basic result of algebraic topology that plays a central role in computational and applied aspects of the subject. In topological data analysis, one often needs a nerve theorem that is functorial in an appropriate sense, and furthermore one often needs a nerve theorem for closed covers as well as for open covers. While the techniques for proving such functorial nerve theorems have long been available, there is unfortunately no general-purpose, explicit treatment of this topic in the literature. We address this by proving a variety of functorial nerve theorems. First, we show how one can use elementary techniques to prove nerve theorems for covers by closed convex sets in Euclidean space, and for covers of a simplicial complex by subcomplexes. Then, we establish a more general, "unified" nerve theorem that subsumes many of the variants, using standard techniques from abstract homotopy theory.

Abstract:In the case of (∞,1) -categories, the homotopy coherent nerve gives a right Quillen equivalence between the models of simplicially enriched categories and of quasi-categories. This shows that homotopy coherent diagrams of (∞,1) -categories can equivalently be defined as functors of quasi-categories or as simplicially enriched functors out of the homotopy coherent categorifications. In this paper, we construct a homotopy coherent nerve for (∞,n) -categories. We show that it realizes a right Quillen equivalence between the models of categories strictly enriched in (∞,n−1) -categories and of Segal category objects in (∞,n−1) -categories. This similarly enables us to define homotopy coherent diagrams of (∞,n) -categories equivalently as functors of Segal category objects or as strictly enriched functors out of the homotopy coherent categorifications.

Abstract:Crossed modules are algebraic models of homotopy 2-types and hence have $\pi_1$ and $\pi_2$. We propose a definition of the centre of a crossed module whose essential invariants can be computed via the group cohomology $H^i(\pi_1,\pi_2)$. This definition therefore has much nicer properties than one proposed by Norrie in the 80s.

Abstract:Given a local $\otimes$-triangulated category, and a fiber sequence $y\to 1 \to x$, one may ask if there is always a nonzero object $z$ such that either $z\otimes f$ or $z\otimes g$ is $\otimes$-nilpotent. The claim that this property holds for all local $\otimes$-triangulated categories is equivalent to Balmer's "nerves of steel conjecture" from <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2001.00284" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2001.00284">arXiv:2001.00284</a>. In the present paper, we will see how this property can fail if the category we start with is not rigid, discuss a large class of categories where the property holds, and ultimately prove that the nerves of steel conjecture is equivalent to a stronger form of this property.

Abstract:One can associate to any strict globular $\omega$-category three augmented simplicial nerves called the globular nerve, the branching and the merging semi-cubical nerves. If this strict globular $\omega$-category is freely generated by a precubical set, then the corresponding homology theories contain different informations about the geometry of the higher dimensional automaton modeled by the precubical set. Adding inverses in this $\omega$-category to any morphism of dimension greater than 2 and with respect to any composition laws of dimension greater than 1 does not change these homology theories. In such a framework, the globular nerve always satisfies the Kan condition. On the other hand, both branching and merging nerves never satisfy it, except in some very particular and uninteresting situations. In this paper, we introduce two new nerves (the branching and merging semi-globular nerves) satisfying the Kan condition and having conjecturally the same simplicial homology as the branching and merging semi-cubical nerves respectively in such framework. The latter conjecture is related to the thin elements conjecture already introduced in our previous papers.
