Abstract:As the prospect of commercial quantum computers turns ever more real in recent times, research in quantum algorithms becomes the center of attention. Due to the strong parallelism of quantum computing in Hilbert space, ordinarily intractable calculation problems could now be solved very efficiently with non-classical means. To exploit parallelism, creative quantum algorithms are required so that efficient quantum oracles can be tailor-designed to specific computation needs. Therefore, in the quest for quantum supremacy, quantum algorithms and their related applications are as important as the quantum computer hardware. This article covers the basic concepts of quantum computation and reviews some important quantum algorithms and their applications.

Abstract:The recent development of quantum computing, which uses entanglement, superposition, and other quantum fundamental concepts, can provide substantial processing advantages over traditional computing. These quantum features help solve many complex problems that cannot be solved otherwise with conventional computing methods. These problems include modeling quantum mechanics, logistics, chemical-based advances, drug design, statistical science, sustainable energy, banking, reliable communication, and quantum chemical engineering. The last few years have witnessed remarkable progress in quantum software and algorithm creation and quantum hardware research, which has significantly advanced the prospect of realizing quantum computers. It would be helpful to have comprehensive literature research on this area to grasp the current status and find outstanding problems that require considerable attention from the research community working in the quantum computing industry. To better understand quantum computing, this paper examines the foundations and vision based on current research in this area. We discuss cutting-edge developments in quantum computer hardware advancement and subsequent advances in quantum cryptography, quantum software, and high-scalability quantum computers. Many potential challenges and exciting new trends for quantum technology research and development are highlighted in this paper for a broader debate.

Abstract:As we begin to reach the limits of classical computing, quantum computing has emerged as a technology that has captured the imagination of the scientific world. While for many years, the ability to execute quantum algorithms was only a theoretical possibility, recent advances in hardware mean that quantum computing devices now exist that can carry out quantum computation on a limited scale. Thus, it is now a real possibility, and of central importance at this time, to assess the potential impact of quantum computers on real problems of interest. One of the earliest and most compelling applications for quantum computers is Feynman's idea of simulating quantum systems with many degrees of freedom. Such systems are found across chemistry, physics, and materials science. The particular way in which quantum computing extends classical computing means that one cannot expect arbitrary simulations to be sped up by a quantum computer, thus one must carefully identify areas where quantum advantage may be achieved. In this review, we briefly describe central problems in chemistry and materials science, in areas of electronic structure, quantum statistical mechanics, and quantum dynamics that are of potential interest for solution on a quantum computer. We then take a detailed snapshot of current progress in quantum algorithms for ground-state, dynamics, and thermal-state simulation and analyze their strengths and weaknesses for future developments.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Quantum Computing is a new and exciting field at the intersection of mathematics, computer science and physics. It concerns a utilization of quantum mechanics to improve the efficiency of computation. Here we present a gentle introduction to some of the ideas in quantum computing. The paper begins by motivating the central ideas of quantum mechanics and quantum computation with simple toy models. From there we move on to a formal presentation of the small fraction of (finite dimensional) quantum mechanics that we will need for basic quantum computation. Central notions of quantum architecture (qubits and quantum gates) are described. The paper ends with a presentation of one of the simplest quantum algorithms: Deutsch's algorithm. Our presentation demands neither advanced mathematics nor advanced physics.

Abstract:This paper provides a short introduction to the mathematical foundation of quantum computation for researchers in computer science by providing an introduction fo the mathematical basis of calculations. This paper concerns the mathematical foundations of quantum computation addressing first the representation of qubit using the Bloch sphere and second the special relations between SU(2) and SO(3). The properties of SU(2) are introduced focusing especially about the double-covering of SO(3) and explaining how to map rotations of SO(3) into matrices of SU(2). Quantum physic operators are based on SU(2) since we have a direct relationship to SO(3) namely one isomorphism. We start first from basic representations of qubit in R^3 and representations of operators in SU(2) and we next discuss with operators that permit to move from one SU(2) to another one according to a specific operator of SU(2) that is related to rotation into R^3.

Abstract:Quantum computation appears to offer significant advantages over classical computation and this has generated a tremendous interest in the field. In this thesis we consider the application of quantum computers to scientific computing and combinatorial optimization. We study five problems. The first three deal with quantum algorithms for computational problems in science and engineering, including quantum simulation of physical systems. In particular, we study quantum algorithms for numerical computation, for the approximation of ground and excited state energies of the Schr\"odinger equation, and for Hamiltonian simulation with applications to physics and chemistry. The remaining two deal with quantum algorithms for approximate optimization. We study the performance of the quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA), and show a generalization of QAOA, the $\textit{quantum}$ $\textit{alternating}$ $\textit{operator}$ $\textit{ansatz}$, particularly suitable for constrained optimization problems and low-resource implementations on near-term quantum devices.

Abstract:Basic concepts of quantum theory of information, principles of quantum calculations and the possibility of creation on this basis unique on calculation power and functioning principle device, named quantum computer, are briefly reviewed. The main blocks of quantum logic, schemes of implementation of quantum calculations, as well as some known today effective quantum algorithms, called to realize advantages of quantum calculations upon classical, are concerned. Among them special place is taken by Shor's algorithm of number factorization, Grover's algorithm of unsorted database search and, finally, the most promising in application methods of quantum phenomena simulation, particularly quantum chaos. The most perspective methods of experimental realization of quantum computer, namely nuclear-magnetic resonance and trapped ions realizations, are discussed. Phenomena of decoherence, its influence on quantum computer stability and methods of quantum error correction are described.

Abstract:Quantum algorithms have begun to surpass classical ones in several computation fields, yet practical application remains challenging due to hardware and software limitations. Here, we introduce a quantum algorithm that quadratically improves spatial discretization within these constraints. Implemented in the quantum software library Pennylane, our algorithm bridges the gap from theoretical models to tangible quantum circuitry. The approach promises enhanced efficiency in quantum spatial analysis, with simulations and hardware experiments validating its potential.

Abstract:Since its inception at the beginning of the twentieth century, quantum mechanics has challenged our conceptions of how the universe ought to work; however, the equations of quantum mechanics can be too computationally difficult to solve using existing computers for even modestly large systems. Here I will show that quantum computers can sometimes be used to address such problems and that quantum computer science can assign formal complexities to learning facts about nature. Hence, computer science should not only be regarded as an applied science; it is also of central importance to the foundations of science.

Abstract:Accurate models for open quantum systems -- quantum states that have non-trivial interactions with their environment -- may aid in the advancement of a diverse array of fields, including quantum computation, informatics, and the prediction of static and dynamic molecular properties. In recent years, quantum algorithms have been leveraged for the computation of open quantum systems as the predicted quantum advantage of quantum devices over classical ones may allow previously inaccessible applications. Accomplishing this goal will require input and expertise from different research perspectives, as well as the training of a diverse quantum workforce, making a compilation of current quantum methods for treating open quantum systems both useful and timely. In this Review, we first provide a succinct summary of the fundamental theory of open quantum systems and then delve into a discussion on recent quantum algorithms. We conclude with a discussion of pertinent applications, demonstrating the applicability of this field to realistic chemical, biological, and material systems.

Abstract:Quantum computation and quantum information are of great current interest in computer science, mathematics, physical sciences and engineering. They will likely lead to a new wave of technological innovations in communication, computation and cryptography. As the theory of quantum physics is fundamentally stochastic, randomness and uncertainty are deeply rooted in quantum computation, quantum simulation and quantum information. Consequently quantum algorithms are random in nature, and quantum simulation utilizes Monte Carlo techniques extensively. Thus statistics can play an important role in quantum computation and quantum simulation, which in turn offer great potential to revolutionize computational statistics. While only pseudo-random numbers can be generated by classical computers, quantum computers are able to produce genuine random numbers; quantum computers can exponentially or quadratically speed up median evaluation, Monte Carlo integration and Markov chain simulation. This paper gives a brief review on quantum computation, quantum simulation and quantum information. We introduce the basic concepts of quantum computation and quantum simulation and present quantum algorithms that are known to be much faster than the available classic algorithms. We provide a statistical framework for the analysis of quantum algorithms and quantum simulation.

Abstract:The rapid and successful strides in quantum chemistry in the past decades can be largely credited to a conspicuous synergy between theoretical and computational advancements. However, the architectural computer archetype that enabled such a progress is approaching a state of more stagnant development. One of the most promising technological avenues for the continuing progress of quantum chemistry is the emerging quantum computing paradigm. This revolutionary proposal comes with several challenges, which span a wide array of disciplines. In chemistry, it implies, among other things, a need to reformulate some of its long established cornerstones in order to adjust to the operational demands and constraints of quantum computers. Due to its relatively recent emergence, much of quantum computing may still seem fairly nebulous and largely unknown to most chemists. It is in this context that here we review and illustrate the basic aspects of quantum information and their relation to quantum computing insofar as enabling simulations of quantum chemistry. We consider some of the most relevant developments in light of these aspects and discuss the current landscape when of relevance to quantum chemical simulations in quantum computers.

Abstract:Proceeding from the concept of rational expectations, a new dynamic model of supply and demand in a single market with one supplier, one buyer, and one kind of commodity is developed. Unlike the cob-web dynamic theories with adaptive expectations that are made up of deterministic difference equations, the new model is cast in the form of stochastic differential equations. The stochasticity is due to random disturbances ("input") to endogenous variables. The disturbances are assumed to be stationary to the second order with zero means and given covariance functions. Two particular versions of the model with different endogenous variables are considered. The first version involves supply, demand, and price. In the second version the stock of commodity is added. Covariance functions and variances of the endogenous variables ("output") are obtained in terms of the spectral theory of stochastic stationary processes. The impact of both deterministic parameters of the model and the random input on the stochastic output is analyzed and new conditions of chaotic instability are found. If these conditions are met, the endogenous variables undergo unbounded chaotic oscillations. As a result, the market that would be stable if undisturbed loses stability and collapses. This phenomenon cannot be discovered even in principle in terms of any cobweb deterministic model.

Abstract:This Perspective focuses on the several overlaps between quantum algorithms and Monte Carlo methods in the domains of physics and chemistry. We will analyze the challenges and possibilities of integrating established quantum Monte Carlo solutions in quantum algorithms. These include refined energy estimators, parameter optimization, real and imaginary-time dynamics, and variational circuits. Conversely, we will review new ideas in utilizing quantum hardware to accelerate the sampling in statistical classical models, with applications in physics, chemistry, optimization, and machine learning. This review aims to be accessible to both communities and intends to foster further algorithmic developments at the intersection of quantum computing and Monte Carlo methods. Most of the works discussed in this Perspective have emerged within the last two years, indicating a rapidly growing interest in this promising area of research.
