Abstract:We argue the possibility of realization of a polarization insensitive all-optical switching in a planar metamaterial composed of a 4-fold periodic array of two concentric metal rings placed on a substrate of nonlinear material. It is demonstrated that a switching may be achieved between essentially different values of transmission near the resonant frequency of the high-quality-factor Fano-shape trapped-mode excitation.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
This paper aims to explore how to use planar metamaterials with high structural symmetry to achieve all - optical switches. Specifically, the researchers proposed a planar metamaterial based on a double - ring array (DR) structure with a nonlinear dielectric substrate, which can generate a high - Q Fano - type trapped - mode resonance in the resonant mode. In this way, the polarization - insensitive all - optical switch function can be achieved. ### Main problems The key problems that the paper attempts to solve are: 1. **Improve the efficiency of optical switches**: Traditional optical switches usually require strong optical power or a large volume of nonlinear optical materials to achieve a significant nonlinear response. The planar metamaterial based on the double - ring array proposed in this paper can achieve efficient all - optical switches with lower optical power. 2. **Achieve polarization - insensitive all - optical switches**: Many existing optical switches are very sensitive to the polarization state of the incident light, which limits their application range. The design scheme proposed in this paper can achieve polarization - insensitive all - optical switches, thereby improving the universality and practicality of the device. ### Key technologies - **Double - ring array structure**: This structure consists of two concentric metal rings placed on a nonlinear dielectric substrate. By adjusting the size and spacing of the inner and outer rings, the excitation of the trapped mode can be controlled to achieve high - Q resonance. - **Nonlinear dielectric substrate**: Select an appropriate nonlinear dielectric (such as InSb), whose nonlinear refractive index exhibits a high nonlinear response in the mid - infrared band, which helps to enhance the optical nonlinear effect. - **Fano - type resonance**: This resonance mode has a sharp asymmetric line shape and can achieve a transmission coefficient change from 0 to 1 in a very narrow frequency range, which is very suitable for all - optical switches. ### Mathematical model The method of moments was used in the paper to calculate the expressions of current \(J\), reflection coefficient \(r\) and transmission coefficient \(t\): \[J = J(\omega,\epsilon)\] \[t = t(\omega,\epsilon)\] \[r = r(\omega,\epsilon)\] where \(\omega\) is the frequency of the incident light and \(\epsilon\) is the dielectric constant of the substrate. The dielectric constant \(\epsilon\) of the nonlinear substrate depends on the internal electric field intensity \(I_{in}\): \[\epsilon=\epsilon_1+\epsilon_2I_{in}\] By numerically solving the nonlinear equation of the average current \(\bar{J}\): \[\bar{J}=A\cdot\bar{J}(\omega,\epsilon_1+\epsilon_2I_{in}(\bar{J}))\] The relationship between the transmission coefficient \(t\) and the reflection coefficient \(r\) and the intensity of the incident light field can be obtained: \[t = t(\omega,\epsilon_1+\epsilon_2I_{in}(A))\] \[r = r(\omega,\epsilon_1+\epsilon_2I_{in}(A))\] ### Conclusion The research results show that the planar metamaterial based on the double - ring array can achieve high - Q Fano - type trapped - mode resonance in the resonant mode, thereby achieving efficient all - optical switch functions at lower optical power and being insensitive to the polarization state of the incident light. This finding provides new ideas for designing compact, efficient, and polarization - insensitive all - optical switches.
